HUSKIE INVITATIONAL REPORT

North Allegheny was placed in Pool A against the host team, Oak Park River Forest (IL), Ann Arbor Pioneer (MI), and Christian Academy (KY)

OAK PARK RIVER FOREST - 5  NORTH ALLEGHENY - 0

The home team started off quickly with two goals in the first five minutes.  The NA defense stiffened and kept the Huskies from scoring again until 20 seconds remaining in the half.  OPRF took a 3-0 lead to halftime.  In the second half, the NA coaching staff challenged the Lady Tigers to put more offensive pressure on the Huskies.  NA did step up and earned six penalty corners but could not score.  OPRF added two more goals to finish with a 5-0 victory.  Senior goalie Steph Anderson collected 17 saves.  Sophomore defender Lauren Shideler had a strong defensive stick in the circle and added two more defensive saves to her season total of six.

CHRISTIAN ACADEMY - 4  NORTH ALLEGHENY - 0

Christian Academy took a 1-0 lead early on a conversion of a penalty stroke.  The NA defense was able to keep the game close by holding off four defensive corners and ten shots on goal.  CA took a 1-0 lead to halftime.  In the second half, the Kentucky team broke the game open with three more goals.  Anderson made 15 saves in the game, but Christian Academy took a 4-0 victory.

ANN ARBOR PIONEER - 3  NORTH ALLEGHENY - 0

The coaching staff challenged the Lady Tigers to not be shutout in their pool.  After AAP took a 1-0 lead at the 20:42 mark, the NA defense picked up play and began to send the ball in for offensive chances.  Shideler collected another defensive save as she secured the post to ward off an AAP corner increasing her total to seven.  The half ended with the undefeated Pioneers leading by just a 1-0 score.  In the second half, the Lady Tigers were looking for an upset.  Although NA came out strong early in the half, AAP added two more goals.  For the last eight minutes of play, NA was close to scoring but a reverse chip at the :22 mark sealed the loss.  Anderson was tough again in goal making 14 saves.

NORTH ALLEGHENY - 3  ANTIOCH - 3

In a game matching the 4th place team from Pool A against the 4th place team from Pool D, the Lady Tigers entered the final game of the tournament looking for a victory.  Junior Kellie Roach drove in a hard shot at the 15:40 mark to give NA its first goal and first lead of the tourney.  Antioch answered five minutes later to tie the score at 1-1.  Just before the half ended, Antioch scored off a penalty stroke to take a 2-1 advantage to the intermission.  The Lady Tigers came back to tie the game off a corner on a pass back to senior midfielder Liz Herb who sent it to senior forward Andrea Camut who fired it into the net to make it a 2-2 game.  It was the first conversion off a corner this season.  With confidence, NA took the lead on the next corner.  At the 12:00 minute mark, junior Michelle Cotter scored her first goal of the season to give the Lady Tigers a 3-2 advantage.  The teams battled hard over the next ten minutes with Antioch getting the tying goal with two minutes left.  NA worked hard over the final minutes but could not score with the game ending in a 3-3 tie.  Although the game ended in a tie, Coach Diaz said, "NA was excited to get their offense challenging the opponent once again."

LADY TIGERS EDGE PINE-RICHLAND, 2-1, IN OVERTIME

Photo Gallery

The Lady Tigers needed overtime but were able to defeat the Pine-Richland Rams, 2-1, on Tuesday night at Pine-Richland.  Senior Andrea Camut got the game winner just 1:20 into the overtime period.  Junior Kellie Roach scored earlier for NA to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead early in the second half.

Early in the first half, it was NA with the offensive pressure.  The Lady Tigers attacked P-R on both the right and left sides of the field.  Junior midfielder Michelle Cotter and senior midfielder Caroline Torie created momentum their their strong transition game.  Despite five shots on goal and five penalty corners, NA was unable to score as the teams went to the intermission in a scoreless tie.  Senior goalie Steph Anderson made five saves in the first half to help keep the Rams off the board.

It took just 30 seconds into the second half for Roach to send in a hard goal and give NA a 1-0 advantage.  The Rams answered three minutes late to tie the game at 1-1.  The teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the half with neither scoring.  The Lady Tigers had the statistical edge with 9 shots to 4 for the Rams.  The NA defense of freshman Paige Vanerstrom, junior Sarah Boselovic and sophomore Lauren Shideler kept the Rams out of their offensive zone for much of the half.  Anderson, along with sophomore goalkeeper Antoinette Avila, were credited with three saves in t he half.

With the Hershey overtime experience behind them, the Lady Tigers were confident going into the extra period.  Coach Jen Diaz went with sophomore Sophie Batton, Camut and freshman Carley Thieret up top, senior Liz Herb and Torie at midfield with Vanderstrom and Anderson in the back in the seven-player alignment..  NA took control from the outset of the overtime period.  Batton intercepted a Ram free hit, took the ball into their circle and drew a foul.  The Rams were able to reject Herb's free hit into the circle, but Batton quickly recovered the ball.  The NA sophomore then sent the ball to Camut who drilled it into the right corner to win the game.

It was an exciting and key victory for the Lady Tigers.  The NA section record now stands at 4-1 and brings them into a tie with Penn-Trafford for the section lead.  Next up for the Lady Tigers is a trip to Chicago this weekend to play in the Oak Forest Invitational.  NA will play two games on Friday beginning at 3:00 pm followed by another pair of games on Saturday.

TIGERS DROP TWO AT HERSHEY INVITATIONAL

Photo Gallery

The Lady Tigers ran into stiff competition at the Hershey Invitational over the weekend.  In the first game, Waynesboro downed NA, 7-0.  The Lady Tigers regrouped for the second game and battled Central York to the end before dropping a 2-1 decision in double overtime.  Senior Steph Anderson was brilliant throughout the tournament making 17 saves in the first game and 26 more in the second.  Freshman Carley Thieret scored the NA goal.

In the first game, Waynesboro came out fast and scored four goals in the first eleven minutes.  Freshman back Paige Vanerstrom and senior midfielder Liz Herb played well for the Tigers.  Offensively, NA had seven penalty corners and eight shots on goal but were unable to score.

In game two, Central York scored midway through the first half.  The Lady Tigers answered with good play by junior forward Kellie Roach, sophomore forward Sophie Batton and junior midfielder Michelle Cotter.  NA was unable to score in the first half, however, and Central York took a 1-0 lead to the intermission.  In the second half, Thieret was able to score on a hard shot from the left corner to tie the game.  Neither team scored again in regulation as the game went to overtime.

In the first overtime, NA went with Batton, senior Andrea Camut, and Thieret as forwards, Herb and Cotter in the midfield, Vanerstrom in the back with Anderson in the cage in the seven-player format.  Roach and senior Caroline Torie came in during the first OT but neither team could score as the game went to a second extra time period.  Early in the second overtime, Central York was able to score the game winner.  Coach Jen Diaz commented, "Although disappointed by the loss that drained the entire team of physical and emotional steam, it was a sure sign that NA is a threat to Eastern and Central PA teams and that the Tigers are made up of a fire that fights to the finish."  Seniors Liz Herb and Steph Anderson were named to the Hershey All-Tournament team.

JV UPDATE:  The JV team took second place at the Hershey Tournament.  In the first game, Melanie Lutz scored her first goal of the season to give NA a 1-0 lead over Waynesboro at the 12:00 minute mark.  The NA defense, led by Sara Lutty, Maria Baldonieri, and Hailey Mancuso gave a huge effort to ensure that Steph Anderson (filling in for an ill Antoinette Avila) recorded a shutout.  In the second game, NA played a strong Hershey team in the battle for the tournament championship.  Hershey took an early lead and held on to win the title.  The NA JV squad got a great effort from Becca Belko at center midfield, Mancuso as playmaker, and Alexa Sofranko at defense.  The 2nd place finish is the highest in NA history at the 16-year Hershey Tournament.  Congratulations to coach Katie Baumgartel and the Tigers!

LADY TIGERS DOWN HEMPFIELD, 2-1

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Freshman Carley Thieret scored from a tough angle midway through the first half to give NA a 2-1 lead, and the Lady Tiger defense held off Hempfield for the remainder of the game to preserve the victory.  Sophomore Sophie Batton scored to give NA a 1-0 advantage early in the game.

Hempfield came close to taking the lead just 1:42 into the game with a shot by Tara Zollinger that was stopped by NA senior goalie Steph Anderson but rolled toward the goal.  Sophomore defender Lauren Shideler cleared the ball just before it went into the net to keep the game scoreless.  A minute later, the Lady Tigers had a chance off a penalty corner but could not covert.  Thieret made a good run down the left side at the five minute mark but could not get off a shot.    Batton took a pass from senior forward Andrea Camut and made a great play in front of the net as she pulled the ball away from Hempfield goalie Anniea Stauffer and tucked the it into the goal.  NA took a 1-0 lead at the 10:37 mark.   At the 18:12 mark, Shideler made another good play when she blocked a shot by Zollinger.   Just past the midway point in the half, Zollinger tied the game with a hard blast just inside the circle.  With 17:14 left in the half, Anderson made a sparkling save with her left pad to stop Zollinger again.  After NA Head Coach Jen Diaz called a time out, the Lady Tigers turned up the pressure.  With 10:16 remaining, Thieret made another good move down the left side and went around the Spartan defender along the goal line.  Her hard shot deflected into the net to give NA a 2-1 advantage.  With 9:36 left, Thieret had another chance, but the Hempfield defense cleared the attempt.  On a Hempfield corner, Anderson came up big against Jill McNeish to keep NA on top. With less than a minute left, Zollinger had another good opportunity as she broke through the Tiger defense and got off a hard shot that Anderson had to come out to save.  The Lady Tigers were able to go to the intermission with the 2-1 lead.  In the first half, NA earned six corners while the Spartans had five.

Early in the second half, senior midfielder Liz Herb had a chance off a corner but her shot went wide left.  At the 4:12 mark, McNeish was stopped again by Anderson.  Less than a minute later, Zollinger sent a hard attempt wide of the NA net.  Beginning at the 7:35 mark, Hempfield had three consecutive corners but could not score as Anderson and the NA defense came up big.  After a Hempfield time out at the 10:37 mark, junior forward Kellie Roach broke in on the right side by her shot was blocked over the goal line by the Spartan goalie.  Camut was free on the left side at the 14:22 mark but could not get off a shot.  Off a corner with 9:30 remaining, Anderson stopped McNeish again to preserve the one goal lead. The Lady Tigers came back to pressure the Hempfield goal over the next several minutes.  On a corner with 8:32 left, Roach forced Spartan goalie Stauffer to make a sparkling save.  Of another NA corner with 5:30 remaining, the Lady Tigers could not get off a good shot from a scramble in front of the Spartan net.  With 1:48 on the second half clock, Anderson was forced to make two saves against McNeish as Hempfield desperately tried for the equalizer.  A final attempt by McNeish went wide with less than a minute to play as the Lady Tigers held on for the 2-1 victory.

Once again, it was a good team effort by the Lady Tigers.  Good play by junior Michelle Cotter and Herb at midfield and the NA defenders, including Vanerstrom, junior Sarah Boselovic and Shideler, stopped the attempts by Zollinger and McNeish when the game was on the line.  Final statistics on corner kicks saw NA totaling 13 while Hempfield had 11.  For her overall efforts, both offensively and defensively, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Liz Herb as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Lady Tigers improved to 3-1 in section play.  NA will travel to Hershey for a pair of games tomorrow beginning with a 10:30 am contest.  The Lady Tigers will resume section play with a visit to Pine-Richland on Tuesday night for a 7:30 pm game.

LADY TIGERS EDGE NORWIN, 2-1

The Lady Tigers won their second game in as many nights as they defeated Norwin, 2-1, on the road on Tuesday night.  Freshman Carley Thieret's second goal of the game broke at 1-1 tie midway through the second half.  Senior goalie Steph Anderson recorded 11 saves to preserve the victory.

The game was played on even terms through the first ten minutes.  At the 19:34 mark, Thieret was able to put home a rebound after good shots on goal by junior forward Kellie Roach and senior forward Andrea Camut.  Intense play in the midfield headed up by senior Liz Herb along with juniors Michelle Cotter and Rachel Laurent kept NA ahead until the 9:35 mark.  Norwin got the equalizer on a hard shot from the top of the circle.  Neither team scored again as the teams went to the intermission tied at 1-1.  Both teams recorded four shots in the half, each goalie had three saves, with NA earning three corners to the Knight's two.

The game remained tied for more than sixteen minutes in the second half.  Anderson continued to keep Norwin off the board as the game remained tied.  With 13:11 remaining, it was Thieret again on a rebound as the Lady Tigers gained a 2-1 advantage.  Norwin desperately tried to tie the game, earning six corners in the half.  The NA defense of junior Sarah Boselovic, freshman Paige Vanerstrom, sophomore Lauren Shideler, and senior Ali Schwer were able to shut down the Knights for the remainder of the game.  The Lady Tigers held on for their first road victory of the season.  Coach Jen Diaz called it, "A total team effort for NA's 2nd WPIAL win!"

With the win, the NA section record improved to 2-1 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will host Hempfield tomorrow night in a section contest at Newman Stadium.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Photo Gallery

Junior forward Kellie Roach and senior forward Andrea Camut scored two goals each to lead the Lady Tigers past Latrobe, 6-0, at Newman Stadium on Monday night.  NA scored three goals in each half as they evened their record at 1-1.

The Lady Tigers came out strong as they put pressure on the Latrobe goal early.  Roach gave NA a 1-0 lead when she scored just 5:22 into the contest.  NA continued to create offensive momentum on the right side with aggressive play by freshman Paige Vanerstrom, junior Michelle Cotter and speedy sophomore right wing Sophie Batton.  Roach scored her second of the night on an assist from Camut with 12:22 remaining to give the Lady Tigers a 2-0 advantage.  Less than three minutes later, Batton snuck a goal past the Latrobe goalie on the right post as the NA lead went to 3-0.  The Tiger defense, led by senior Shelby Roehre, held Latrobe to just three shots on goal and two corners in the first half.  Senior goalie Steph Anderson recorded three saves as she kept the Wildcats off the board.  NA took a commanding 3-0 advantage to the intermission.

In the second half, the Lady Tigers kept up the offensive pressure.  Camut scored her first goal of the season at the 12:27 mark with Roach earning the assist to make it a 4-0 NA lead.  Three minutes later, the Lady Tigers created a penalty stroke opportunity.  Senior Captain Liz Herb finished with authority to garner her first goal of the season and increase the Tiger led to 5-0.  The Lady Tigers finished the contest with another goal by Camut at the 1:28 mark with freshman forward Carley Thieret picking up the assist.  NA bombarded the Latrobe goalie with 38 shots and created 13 offensive corners.  Anderson finished the game with five saves.

The Lady Tigers will travel to Norwin tonight to meet the Knights in a 7:30 pm section contest.  NA will return home on Thursday to face Hempfield as section play continues.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm.

PENN-TRAFFORD SURPRISES LADY TIGERS, 1-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Penn-Trafford Warriors scored the only goal of the game on Thursday night at Newman Stadium as they edged the Lady Tigers, 1-0, in the 2008 season opener.  Amanda Lindgren scored on a deflection midway through the first half, and the P-T defense made it stand up for the victory.

The Lady Tigers had an early chance for the lead when junior Kellie Roach made a good run down the left side, but her shot was stopped by Penn-Trafford goalie Tara Flannery.  The Warriors came back later in the half to take the lead.  Marisa Siergiej broke in on a breakaway, but senior goalie Steph Anderson came out to make a big save.  On the rebound, Anderson was there again.  On a third attempt, a shot by Lindgren went off another player into the NA net at the 12:26 mark.  After P-T took the one-goal advantage, the Lady Tigers began to put pressure on the Warrior goal resulting in a pair of penalty corners.  With 11:23 remaining, Roach shot wide of the net off a corner.  Four minutes later, Roach had another chance but again her shot went wide left.  Thirty seconds later, Siergiej broke in free on another breakaway, but Anderson was able to make another great save to keep the deficit at  one goal.  The Lady Tigers kept the pressure up during the last five minutes of the half but did not have a legitimate scoring opportunity.  The teams went to the intermission with Penn-Trafford holding the 1-0 advantage.

Early in the second half, senior midfielder Liz Herb had a chance but her shot was stopped by the P-T defense.  At the 8:20 mark, Roach broke in from the left side but her first attempt was blocked with the rebound missing the net.  Less than two minutes later, senior forward Andrea Camut got loose in front of the P-T goal but Flannery was able to make the save.  The Warriors came back on a two on one later in the half, but Anderson was there to make the save once again.  With 8:27 remaining, the Lady Tigers had a great opportunity off a penalty corner.  With the ball free in the circle, sophomore Sophie Batton and freshman Carley Thieret both got off shots that were stopped by the P-T goalie.  Down a goal, the Lady Tigers continued to pressure the Warrior goal and earned two consecutive corners with a little over three minutes left.  Batton earned the first after a long run down the right side that took her into the circle where advancing was called  on P-T.  On the second, Herb had another chance at the top of the circle but shot wide.  Thirty seconds later, the Warriors almost scored again.  Anderson made the initial save on Kasey Riddle but the ball rolled toward the NA goal where freshman Paige Vanerstrom was able to clear the ball just before it went into the net.  With less than two minutes remaining, NA earned yet another corner, their eleventh of the game.  Herb set up Camut from the left side off the entry pass, but Flannery was again able to make the save and preserve the lead.  As time was running out, Batton had a last attempt blocked and cleared by the P-T defense as the Warriors went on to the 1-0 victory.

It was a tough loss for the Lady Tigers who were opening their season after two previous scheduled games had been rained out.  NA controlled play at times and had a territorial edge for much of the game.  Statistically, the Lady Tigers earned eleven penalty corners to six for the Warriors.  For her efforts in goal, the North Allegheny Sports Network named senior Steph Anderson as the Player of the Game.

With the loss, NA dropped to 0-1 in section play.  The Lady Tigers are scheduled to travel to Latrobe today to make up the postponed game from Tuesday.  Game time for the varsity game is set for 4:00 pm with the JV contest to follow at 5:30 pm.  NA will return the favor and host Latrobe on Monday night in a 7:30 pm section contest.

JV UPDATE:  The JV team opened their season with a 3-0 victory over Penn-Trafford.
