SENECA VALLEY STOPS LADY TIGERS, 3-1

In a battle of unbeatens, the Seneca Valley Raiders defeated the Lady Tigers, 3-1, at Seneca Valley on Thursday night.  The Lady Tigers took the first game, 25-16, and had a 20-15 lead in game two.  The Raiders rallied, however, to go on a five-point run and eventually win game two, 26-24.  Seneca controlled game three from the start and used their blocking and defense to go on to a 25-17 win.  NA made it close in game four but dropped a 25-23 decision, with the Raiders winning the match, three games to one.

The Lady Tigers had three players in double figures in kills: senior OH Gretta Freyermuth had 13, senior OH Jackie Lang 13, and senior MB Kayleigh Tony 10.  Defensively, junior DS Kelsey Davies, Lang, and Gretta Freyermuth all recorded 12 digs.

With their first loss of the season, NA dropped to 4-1 in section play, 5-1 overall.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Penn-Trafford on Monday night for a non-seciton match before returning home on Tuesday to meet rival North Hills in a section contest.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there on Tuesday to broadcast the match LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:50 pm.  Match time for both nights is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

LADY TIGERS TAKE IT TO NEW CASTLE, 3-0

The Lady Tigers remained unbeaten with a 3-0 victory over New Castle at the Senior High gym on Tuesday night.  With the win, the NA section record went to 4-0, the overall mark to 5-0 on the season.  NA will travel to Seneca Valley tomorrow night for a key section match.  Both NA and Seneca Valley are unbeaten going into the match.  The scheduled starting time is set for 7:00 pm.

The Lady Tigers defeated Norwin, 3-0, in a non-section match at the Senior High gym on Monday night.  NA dominated in game one, 25-15, took game two, 25-20, and came from behind to win game three, 25-23.  Senior OH Gretta Freyermuth posted ten kills to pace NA while senior MB Kayleigh Tony added seven and junior OH Leeanne Haus six.

In the first game, Norwin jumped off to a 4-2 lead thanks to the hitting of Alayne Doney and several NA hitting errors.  NA came back to take the lead a 6-5 on a kill by Haus, another by sophomore Kassie Freyermuth, and a block by senior OH Jackie Lang.  The teams exchanged points with Rebecca Ferragonio from Norwin and Tony from NA picking up kills as the score went to 10-10.  After Norwin was called for going into the net, the Lady Tigers went on an 8-2 run to take control of the game.  With Gretta Freyermuth serving, Haus and Long went down the middle to push the score to 13-10.  After Kassie Freyermuth scored on a dink, Jenna Grachen and Cassidy Kravec answered for the Knights to make it 15-12.  Haus followed with a cross court kill, Tony added a pair of kills, and junior Kelsey Davies added an ace as the score went to 19-12.  Down the stretch, Haus scored on a kill down the middle, a putback of an overpass and a blast off the Norwin blockers to make it 23-13.  Afer a kill by Ferragonio and an ace by Carrie Heckert cut the margin to 23-15, a service error brought it to game point.  Junior OH Kaitlin Bradshaw came in off the NA bench to serve an ace to give the Lady Tigers a 25-15 victory and a one game to none lead in the match.

In game two, the teams exchanged points in the early going.  After Gretta Freyermuth went off the Knight blockers for the first point, junior setter Logan Meinert served an ace to make it 2-0.  A kill by Kravec, an ace by Doney, and an NA call for going into the net put Norwin ahead, 3-2.  Lang's cross court hit tied the game before a pair of hitting errors made it a 5-4 Knight lead.  After tying the game on a Norwin error, the Tigers added five straight points.  A dink by Lang, a putback of an overpass by senior MB Laura Conti, a left handed tip by Meinert and two Norwin hitting errors gave NA a 10-5 advantage.  After Norwin cut the margin to 10-8, Conti scored on another kill, and Gretta Freyermuth posted two more points on kills as NA took a 13-11 lead.  The Knights then rallied behind the hitting of Ferragonio and Doney to go ahead, 17-15.  Another cross court kill by Lang and a hitting error allowed NA to tie the game at 17-17.  Once again, the Knights rallied on a kill by Ferragonio down the line, an ace by Carrie Heckert, and a kill by Doney to take a 20-18 lead.  Senior OH Natalie Masters answered with a kill off the blockers and a Norwin hitting error tied the game at 20-20.  With Haus serving, the Lady Tigers scored the next five points to win the game.  Haus served a pair of aces, Gretta Freyermuth added a kill, Conti scored in the middle, and Gretta Freyermuth ended the game with a big hit as NA won game two, 25-20, to take at two games to one lead in the match.

Norwin took the lead early in game three as they looked to extend the match.  After Gretta Freyermuth tied the game at 1-1, an NA service error and a block by Kravec made it 3-1, Norwin.  A kill by Lang and an ace by Davies tied the game at 3-3 before Norwin went on a 9-3 run.  A pair of aces by Kendra Swinston, a pair of kills by Ferragonio, a kill by Doney, and two more aces by Ferragonio put the Knights on top by a 12-6 score.  At this point, the Lady Tigers began a gradual rally to get back in the game.  A pair of kills by Kassie Freyermuth and another by senior opposite Stef Avalli brought NA to within three at 13-10.  Ferragonio answered for the Knights, but three Norwin hitting errors made it 15-13.  A kill by Tony was answered by Doney who went off the NA blockers as the score went to 18-14.  The Lady Tigers came back with the next four points to tie the game.  An ace by Lang, a blast by Tony down the middle, a Norwin hitting error, and a kill by Tony off the Norwin front row blockers tied the game at 18-18.  After Doney went cross court and hit the line, Gretta Freyermuth tied the game, and Kassie Freyermuth went cross court to put NA on top, 20-19.  After a service error, Gretta Freyermuth scored on a quick set and then added another kill to make it a 22-20 NA lead. Two NA errors allowed Norwin to tie the game before Avalli went down the middle to make it 23-22.  A Lang kill off the Knight blockers was answered by a Ferragonio hit down the middle.  With NA leading, 24-23, Avalli's tip was blocked off the antenna as the Lady Tigers won game three, 25-23, and the match, three games to none.

It was a good overall win for the Lady Tigers as Coach Dan Schall had an opportunity to play a lot of players in different combinations.  For her play, the North Allegheny Sports Network named junior Leeanne Haus as the Player of the Match.  With the win, NA improved their overall record to 4-0.  The Lady Tigers will host New Castle tonight in a 7:00 pm non-section match at the Senior High gym.

LADY TIGERS SWEEP BUTLER, 3-0

The Lady Tigers traveled to Butler and defeated the tenth-ranked team in the state, 3-0.  NA won the first game, 25-18, the second, 25-13, and the third and final game, 25-19.  Senior OH Gretta Freyermuth led NA with ten kills while junior setter Logan Meinert recorded 31 assists.

Senior OH Jackie Lang posted eight kills while senior MB Kayleigh Tony added six with sophomore Kassie Freyermuth blocking three Butler attempts.  Defensively, Lang led with 15 digs, junior OH Leeanne Haus had seven and senior libero Liz Overbaugh 5.  Head Coach Dan Schall commented, "We played a very complete match.  Our balance was shown last night with significant contributions from a number of people."

With the win, NA improved to 3-0 in section play.  The Lady Tigers will be back in action again on Monday when they host Norwin in a non-section match at the Senior High gym.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the match LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:50 pm.  Match time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

LADY TIGERS FALL IN QUARTERFINALS
OF SHALER INVITATIONAL

After finishing first in pool play, the Lady Tigers dropped a tough 26-24 decision to Seneca Valley in the quarterfinals of the Shaler Invitational on Saturday.  Senior OH Gretta Freyermuth had 34 kills while senior OH Jackie Lang added 19 to pace NA.  Junior setter Logan Meinert recorded 98 assists in the tournament.

In pool play, NA knocked off Kiski, South Park and Bethel Park twice to advance to the Power Pool matches.  In the Power Pool, the Lady Tigers stopped Thomas Jefferson twice and split with Seneca Valley.  NA won the top seed overall and played Seneca Valley who defeated Thomas Jefferson.  In the semis, Mt. Lebanon defeated Seneca Valley while Pine-Richland beat Butler.  Mt. Lebanon won the title by downed Pine-Richland in the final.

Additional statistical leaders for the Lady Tigers were senior MB Kayleigh Tony with 16 kills, junior OH Leeanne Haus with 13, sophomore MB Kassie Freyermuth with 11, and senior OH Natalie Masters with 10.  Gretta and Kassie Freyermuth had eight blocks each, Gretta recorded 31 digs, and senior libero Liz Overbaugh had 22 digs.  Meinert had 15 aces while Gretta Freyermuth and Lang posted four each.

In a battle of two of the top teams in Pennsylvania, the Lady Tigers came up big with a 3-2 victory over Pine-Richland at the Senior High gym on Thursday night.  After splitting the first four games, NA downed the Rams, 15-12, in the fifth and final game.  Senior OH Gretta Freyermuth had 16 kills and three blocks while senior MB Kayleigh Tony added 13 kills and two blocks for the winning Lady Tigers.

After NA took an early 2-1 lead in game one, the Rams took control.  Strong hitting by Julia McCabe and serving by Hannah Muzzonigro gave the Rams a 9-5 advantage.  Junior setter Logan Meinert answered with a left handed tip and junior Leeanne Haus served an ace as NA cut the lead to 9-7.  Gretta Freyermuth answered an NA service error with a kill to make it 10-8, but the Rams then gradually took control.  Kills by Carolyn Steger and several NA hitting errors pushed the lead to 13-8.  Once again, NA rallied won a cross court kill by Gretta Freyermuth and a putback of an overpass by senior Jackie Lang to make it 13-10.  A kill by Haus brought NA even closer at 14-12.  Kills by Maria Nicholas and McCabe enabled P-R to go on another run that pushed the lead to 20-14.  A late Tiger rally on kills by Gretta Freyermuth and Tony cut the margin to 20-17.  Down the stretch, however, the Rams prevailed with an NA hitting error ending game one with Pine-Richland taking a 25-20 victory.

In game two, the Rams started with momentum and built an early 7-3 lead behind the hitting of Cassie Muzzonigro and McCabe.  The Lady Tigers then rallied as Tony picked up a pair of kills, sophomore Kassie Freyermuth went down the line, senior libero Liz Overbaugh served an ace, and Meinert finally tied the game at 9-9 with another left handed tip.  After Steger gave the Rams a 10-9 advantage, Gretta Freyermuth scored off a back slide to tie the game.  The Lady Tigers scored the next six points to take the lead for good.  Meinert served a pair of aces, Gretta and Kassie Freyermuth both scored on blocks, and Gretta Freyermuth put away another slide as NA took a 16-10 lead.  The advantage went to 19-11 on kills by Kassie Freyermuth, a tip by Lang and a Ram hitting error.  After a Pine-Richland timeout, McCabe and Austen Ashworth led a Ram rally that brought them to within two at 20-18.  NA then outscored P-R downed the stretch, 5-2, with Tony going cross court for the game winner as the Lady Tigers took game two, 25-20, to tie the match at one game each.

In the third game, it was NA that jumped off to the early lead.  Gretta Freyermuth set the stage with a strong kill for the first point as the Lady Tigers built a 6-3 lead.  After the Rams had cut the margin to 7-6 behind a kill and an ace from Melissa Morgan, a service error and a block by Kassie Freyermuth extended the margin to 10-7.  Lang added a point off the Ram blockers, Gretta Freyermuth scored down the middle, and Kassie Freyermuth went down the line as the lead went to 13-8.  The Rams came back, however, with Morgan and Hanna Muzzonigro picking up kills to cut the margin to 14-13.  Haus answered with a kill just inside the back line, and Lang served a pair of points including an ace to make it a 17-13 game.  Once again the Rams came back to cut the lead to one before Tony went off the blockers and Gretta Freyermuth scored on a block to restore a three-point margin at 19-16.  Three NA errors allowed the Rams to tie the game at 19-19, but once again, the Lady Tigers were strong down the stretch.  A kill by Gretta Freyermuth made it 20-19 before Overbaugh served an ace and Meinert scored on two consecutive kills to push the margin to 23-19.  After Steger picked up a kill, Kassie Freyermuth blocked for a point, and Gretta Freyermuth ended game three with a strong kill as NA took a 25-21 victory.  The Lady Tigers took a two games to one lead in the match.

With their backs against the wall, the Rams broke free from an 8-8 tie to go on a 12-3 run to take control of game four.  During the run, Ashworth served three consecutive aces with Nicholas adding another.  With P-R ahead 22-12, Morgan served two straight points including an ace to put the Rams at game point.  Haus went down the middle and Tony scored on a block, but Steger ended things off a slide to gave Pine-Richland a 25-14 victory in game four.

In the fifth and final game, Tony put NA on top, 1-0, with a kill off the left side.  The Rams responded on kills by Hanna Muzzonigro, Steger and McCabe to take a 4-2 early lead.  Gretta Freyermuth answered with a tip allowing Meinert to take over the serving duties.  The NA setter came through with two straight aces to put the Lady Tigers on top, 5-4.  After each side committed a hitting error, Haus scored off a block and the Rams were guilty of a double-hit as the score went to 8-5.  At this point, P-R rallied to score the next four points to take a 9-8 lead behind the hitting of McCabe, Nicholas and Stegar.  After a long rally, Lang drove a hard swing down the middle to tie the match at 9-9.  With junior Kelsey Davies serving, Lang came through again down the middle to put NA on top, 10-9.  Davies then followed with an ace to make it 11-9.  The Rams then committed two hitting errors before NA was guilty of a pair of errors also as the score went to 13-11.  Morgan put back an overpass as the Rams closed to within one at 13-12.  Haus followed with a perfectly placed dink to put NA at game and match point.  With Lang serving, Tony went off the Ram blockers to give the Lady Tigers a 15-12 win in game three.  The Lady Tigers won the match, 15-12.

It was an outstanding match by two of the top volleyball teams in Pennsylvania.  Both teams gave a great effort considering that the season in just in its first week.  For her efforts, particularly down the stretch in game five, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Logan Meinert as the Player of the Match.  Meinert had 13 service points, including two aces, to go along with 5 kills.  She also was on target all night long on her sets as she gave the NA hitters great balls to put away.  With the win, the Lady Tigers moved to 2-0 in section play.  Next up for NA is the Shaler Invitational that will begin at 8:30 am on Saturday morning.

OAKLAND CATHOLIC FALLS TO LADY TIGERS, 3-0

Coach Dan Schall's Lady Tigers opened the 2008 section season with a 3-0 victory at Oakland Catholic on Tuesday night.  NA won the first game, 25-14, the second, 25-14, and completed the sweep with a 25-21 victory in game three.

Lead the way for NA were senior OH Gretta Freyermuth with nine kills, senior OH Jackie Lang with 6, and junior OH Leeanne Haus with six.  Junior setter Logan Meinert posted 22 assists while Lang had eight digs and Meinert six.  Lang and Meinert served three aces each while Haus added three blocks.

Oakland Catholic is coached by 2002 NA grad Karisa Decker.  According to Coach Schall, "(The Eagles) played very hard, keeping a lot of balls alive defensively".

NA will host Pine-Richland tomorrow night at the Senior High gym.  The Rams are currently ranked #2 and the Tigers #3 in Class AAA in the PCVA poll of top teams in Pennsylvania.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the match LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:50 pm.  Match time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

LADY TIGERS WIN MT. LEBANON INVITATIONAL

In their first action of the new season, the Lady Tigers won the Mt. Lebanon Invitational on Saturday.  In the semifinals, the Lady Tigers defeated 2006 WPIAL Champion Moon, 25-20, before downing the 2007 WPIAL Champion Mt. Lebanon, 25-17 in the finals.

In pool play, the Tigers downed Ambridge, Moon, Greensburg Salem and Penn-Trafford in two games while splitting with Upper St. Clair and Mt. Lebanon.   The final pool standings were as follows:
