GAME SUMMARIES

NORTH HILLS, RAIN AND COLD DOWN TIGERS,
1-0, ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON

by Curt Soergel

In a game played on a cold, miserable day, the Tiger squad gave a good effort but lost a heartbreaker to section rival North Hills, 1-0.  In weather that ranged from a chilling drizzle at time to a driving rain at others, neither team seemed able to sustain much momentum in the first half, although both sides created isolated opportunities.

Senior Dylan Flaherty had a sold chance on a feed from sophomore Jamie Lucchini in the sixth minute, but a swarming NH defense thwarted the effort.  Again at the 10:30 mark, midfielder Zach Jergen made a pretty cross to Flaherty, but his turning shot sailed just wide of the net.  In the 16th minute striker Sean McCrory got off a strong shot on a nice passing connection juniors Tommy Richter and Phil Fives, but the Indian goalkeeper was equal to the task and punched the ball away.  Although the Indians had very few chances in the first half, they made the most of one at the 32 minute mark.  On a throw from deep in the left corner, two different Indians got a head on the ball, the last changing its direction almost 180 degrees, and the ball sailed into the upper right hand corner of the net past helpless NA keeper Mike Severyn.  Shortly after the goal, the inclement weather took  a turn for the worse, and it became more and more difficult to put any passing combinations together.  Much of the play took place in the middle half of the field, and the first half ended with the Tigers trailing the Indians by the 1-0 score.

As the second half began, the driving rain continued to hamper the flow of the game.  Neither the Tigers or the Indians were able to mount any serious challenges for the first ten minutes or so of the half.  The NA backline of seniors Evan Buysse and Andy Soergel and juniors Jake Spence and Alex Greenblatt picked up their level of play and shut the Indians down without a shot time and time again.

The defensive stand seemed to give the Tigers a boost, and the offense suddenly came alive.  For the final twenty-five minutes, the NA opportunities came in waves, but the Indians, who had not gone to a "five-across-the back" defensive alignment, rose to the challenge.  Between the 20th and 24th minutes, Jergen took several corner kicks that the Tigers could not convert.  In the 28th minute, both Flaherty and fellow striker Dane Bralich each created chances, but the Indians crowded the back line and did not allow enough room for the Tigers to finish.  In the waning moments of the half, the NA offense was pushing the Indians hard, with even keeper Severyn jumping into the play, but unfortunately for the Tigers, on this soggy Saturday afternoon they simply ran out of time.  As the final horn sounded, North Hills had made their lone tally hold up and walked off the wet field with a "one-nil" victory.  The Tigers will certainly be looking forward to the rematch on their home turn when the Indians visit on October 15th.

With the loss, the NA section record fell to 1-4, the overall mark to 4-6 on the season.  The Tigers will finally return home for a section game on Thursday when they host Seneca Valley.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

JV UPDATE:  The JV team defeated North Hills, 1-0, to improve their overall record to 6-1-3.  NA has defeated Woodland Hills, Plu, Penn Trafford, Seton LaSalle, and Butler losing only to Seneca Valley, 1-0.

TIGERS EDGE BUTLER, 2-1, FOR FIRST SECTION WIN

by Gene Cuomo

The Tigers were able to down the Butler Golden Tornado, 2-1, at Butler on Thursday night for their first section win.  Sophomore Phil Fives got the game winner with just 4:55 remaining in the game.  The Tigers had taken a 1-0 lead on senior forward Dylan Flaherty's goal early in the first half.

It took only a minute and a half for the Tigers to jump in front of the Tornado.  Fives led Flaherty with an upfield pass that Flaherty drilled into the net to give NA a 1-0 advantage.  Flaherty was back a few minutes later as he sent a rocket right at the Butler goalkeeper.  The Tigers spent a lot of time in the Butler defensive end in the first half.  Despite four corner kick opportunities, the Tigers weren't able to extend the lead.  The half ended with the Tigers holding the 1-0 lead.

Butler came out in the second half with renewed enthusiasm looking to even the score as they aggressively pursued every loose ball.  Their efforts paid off as senior forward Corey Werth scored at the 20:41 mark to tie the score at 1-1.  The Tornado continued to pressure the Tigers from all areas of the field.  NA senior goalkeeper Mike Severyn kept the Tigers' hopes for victory alive as he repeatedly "just said no" to several Butler shots at the Tiger net.  Butler kept the NA defense busy with three corner kicks within a span of four minutes.  The Tigers repeatedly broke up Butler's assault.

In the final seven minutes of the game, the Tigers mounted their own assault on the Tornado goal.  Seniors Shawn McCrory and Dane Bralich, along with Fives, intensified the frenzy in front of the goal by blasting shots at, over and wide of the net.  The constant pressure on the Butler defense finally paid off.  With 4:55 left on the clock, Bralich connected with Fives who ripped a shot past the Butler keeper.  The NA defense neutralized Butler's final scoring attempts giving the Tigers a much needed 2-1 section victory.

With the win, NA improved to 1-3 in section play, 4-5 overall on the season.  The Tigers will travel to North Hills tomorrow afternoon to meet the rival Indians in a 12:30 pm section contest.

SECOND HALF PENALTY KICK STOPS TIGERS, 2-1

by Gene Cuomo

The Tigers built a 1-0 halftime lead at Pine-Richland on Tuesday night only to see the Rams score two second-half goals to take a 2-1 victory.  Senior Dylan Flaherty had give NA a first half lead off an assist from senior Dane Bralich

The Tigers got on the scoreboard first as seniors Dane Bralich and Dylan Flaherty teamed up to beat the Pine-Richland defense.  Bralich sent a precise pass between two PR defenders and Flaherty put it in the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead at the 26:17 mark.  The Rams gave the Tigers a scare with 5:28 left in the first half as NA goalkeeper Mike Severyn came out of the net to force Pine Richland's Brian Jones to shoot.  Jones' shot hit the post and the ball went out of bounds.  The first half ended with the Tigers on top, 1-0.

Pine Richland's Mike Rios scored two minutes and forty five seconds into the second half to tie the score at 1-1.  At the 33:10 mark of the half, the Rams were awarded a penalty kick for an illegal slide tackle by the Tiger defense.  Pine Richland's Steve Trempus took the penalty kick and scored giving the Rams a 2-1 lead.  The Tigers continued to fight back but were unable to score.  Danny Veres shot at the 21:00 mark hit the post, and Diego Febres-Cordero's header at 15:25 went over the net.  With 3:12 left on the clock, it looked like Shawn McCrorey's shot was going to tie the score, but the Ram's Nick Scocia redirected it out of bounds before it could cross the goal line.

With the loss, the NA section record fell to 0-3, the overall mark to 3-5 on the season.  The Tigers will travel to Butler tomorrow night for a 7:00 pm section contest.

TIGERS EDGE SETON LaSALLE, 2-1, IN OVERTIME

Photo Gallery

by Gene Cuomo

The Tigers ended a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 overtime victory at Seton LaSalle on Saturday afternoon.  After playing two tough section games during the week against Seneca Valley and Shaler, the schedule just wouldn't give the Tigers a break.  Seton LaSalle, last year's WPIAL and PIAA champions in the single "A" division would prove to be another very tough opponent.

Seton LaSalle threatened to score early, but Israel Echeverria broke up their fast break attempt.  Immediately following, junior goalkeeper Peter Howard made a diving save stopping a blistering shot at the 34:50 mark.  A minute later Howard left the goal to shut down another Rebel scoring attempt.  At the 32:45 mark, senior Dane Bralich out leaped the Seton LaSalle defenders and headed a long cross field pass from Echeverria into the goal for a 1-0 Tiger lead.  NA never let up as they unleashed 14 shots to Seton LaSalle's four in the first half.  Dylan Flaherty, Tommy Richter and Bralich kept the Rebel defense busy as they kept the shots coming throughout the first half.

The second half included more solid goalkeeping by the Tigers.  Senior goalkeeper Mike Severyn came out of the net to stop a Seton LaSalle breakaway at the 34:49.  At the 31:51 mark, Severyn made a diving save to stop a quick Rebel header.  Seton LaSalle's offense was gaining momentum as they nearly doubled their first half shot production by the midway mark of the half.  The Rebels were creating a lot more scoring opportunities, but Andy Soergel, Echeverria, Evan Buysse and Jake Spence put in solid defensive play that kept them frustrated.  At the 15:06 mark, it looked like senior forward Shawn McCrorey had extended the NA lead to 2-0, but the Tigers were called for offside.

The final ten minutes of play were very tense as both teams created scoring opportunities but neither could convert.  With 6:29 left to play, the Rebels played an indirect kick into the box and headed it just under the crossbar.  With 3:58 remaining, the Tigers returned the favor.  Flaherty sent a ball into the box from the left corner and McCrorey headed it just over the crossbar.  With 1:10 left, Seton LaSalle scored on a corner kick to tie the game at 1-1.  The clock ran out sending the game into a 10-minute sudden death overtime.

One minute and thirty-seven seconds into overtime, senior Danny Veres shot from the left hand corner and beat the Seton LaSalle keeper to give the Tigers a hard-earned 2-1 victory.  With the win, the NA overall record improved to 3-4 on the season.  The Tigers return to section play on Tuesday night when they visit Pine-Richland to meet the Rams in a 7:30 pm contest.

SHALER BLANKS TIGERS, 2-0

by Gene Cuomo

After a tough section opener with Seneca Valley on Tuesday night, the Tigers traveled to Shaler looking for a win to even out their record in section play.

The Tigers met a fast and physical team in Shaler on Thursday night.  The Titans wasted little time as they tested the Tiger defense immediately with three shots on Tiger goalie Mike Severyn in the first three minutes of the game.  Shaler's middle defender Eric Hackworth made several long runs and served a couple of penetrating indirect kicks into the eighteen mark during the first half.  Tiger defenders Andy Soergel, Evan Buysse, Dylan Flaherty, and Israel Echeverria quickly broke things up.  The pace of play was frantic, possession changed quicky and most offensive threats were short live bursts by both teams.  With 1:47 left on the clock, Shaler midfielder Craig Tuit scored giving the Titans a 1-0 lead at the intermission.

At the 28:55 mark of the second half, Shaler's striker Corey Casper scored off a pass from midfielder Steven Hamilton to give Shaler a 2-0 lead.  The Tigers didn't quit as they continued to attack the Shaler defense.  Shawn McCrorey, Dane Bralich, Flaherty and the Tiger midfield created opportunities in front of the Shaler net but could not convert before time ran out.

The loss gave NA a section record of 0-2, an overall mark of 2-4 on the season.  The Tigers will travel to Seton LaSalle on Saturday afternoon for a 2:15 pm non-section contest.

LATE GOAL GIVES SENECA VALLEY 2-1
VICTORY OVER TIGERS

by Gene Cuomo

Seneca Valley's Ryan Vilella's goal with 4:40 left was the difference as the Raiders downed the Tigers, 2-1, at Seneca Valley on Tuesday night in the section opener.  NA had split another pair of games over the weekend defeated Plum 3-1, but losing at Penn-Trafford, 4-1, to enter the game with a 2-2 record in non-section play.

The Tigers took an early lead when sophomore midfielder Phil Fives scored the game's first goal on a corner kick at the 20:33 mark of the first half.  Strong midfield play by the Tigers' Fives, sophomore Jamie Lucchini, sophomore Tommy Richter, and senior Zach Jergen neutralized Seneca's scoring attack and kept the Tigers on top, 1-0, at the half.

Seneca Valley got right to work in the second half testing the Tiger defense with a series of corner kicks and crossing passes at Tiger senior goalie Mike Severyn, but Severyn and the NA defense wouldn't yield.  The Tigers kept the Raiders busy with attacks of their own but were unable to score.  With 10:40 left on the clock, Seneca's Richie Kocur redirected a pass into the Tiger net to tie the score at 1-1.  The Tigers continued to battle with Seneca as both teams fought hard to try to break the 1-1 tie.  With 4:40 remaining in the game, Vilella scored to put Seneca on top, 2-1.  The Raiders were able to hold off NA for the remainder of the contest to pick up the victory.

With the loss to Seneca, the NA section record goes to 0-1, the overall mark to 2-3 on the season.  The Tigers will travel to Shaler tomorrow night to meet the Titans in a section contest.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

TIGERS SPLIT PAIR OF GAMES OVER WEEKEND

by Gene Cuomo

The Tigers got off to a good start on Friday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over Woodland Hills at Marshall Middle School.  On Saturday afternoon, NA hosted neighboring Hampton and dropped a 2-0 decision to the Talbots.

In the first half, the ball changed hands constantly over the first seven minutes of play.  Both teams had difficulty trying to establish ball control and create scoring opportunities.  It wasn't until 7:30 elapsed before the first shot of the game was taken by Hampton's Chris Hunkele.  Hunkele went on to score the first goal of the game with seven minutes and twenty seconds left in the first half to give Hampton a 1-0 lead.  The Tigers had a few first half opportunities to score but were unsuccessful.

In the closing minutes of the first half, North Allegheny's senior goalkeeper, Mike Severyn, made a series of spectacular, goal stopping saves that kept the Tigers in a close 1-0 game.

The Tigers continued to play tough defense throughout the second half.  Jake Spence, Dylan Flaherty and Aidan MacDonough held the Hampton attack at bay.  With eight minutes left on the clock, NA midfielder Danny Veres directed a couple of shots at the Hampton GK but came up empty.  An NA corner kick taken by Tommy Richter with 4:39 remaining was redirected wide by Diego Febres-Cordero.

Hampton scored their second goal with forty seconds left on the clock giving the Talbots a 2-0 victory over the Tigers.  With a 1-1 non-section record in the early season, the Tigers will continue with non-section play next weekend.  On Friday, NA will host Plum at Newman Stadium with game time set for 3:30 pm.  On Saturday, the Tigers will travel to Penn-Trafford to meet the Warriors in a 5:30 pm non-section contest.
