SENECA VALLEY RALLIES TO DEFEAT LADY TIGERS,
3-2, IN WPIAL SEMIFINALS

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

The Lady Tigers took a 2-1 lead after three games in the WPIAL Class AAA semifinals at North Hills on Thursday night only to see Seneca Valley rally to win the final two games and eliminate defending champion NA with a 3-2 victory.  NA won the first game, 25-19, but the Raiders dominated game two in a 25-12 win.  In game three, the Lady Tigers used a 5-1 run at the end of the game to take a hard-fought 25-23 victory.  Once again, the Raiders answered with a 25-20 win in game four.  In the final game, SV opened with a 6-3 lead and finished with a 15-8 win to take the match.

The Lady Tigers jumped out quickly to a 4-0 lead in game one on a kill by Haus, a block by Freyermuth, a putback of an overpass by junior MB Julia Miller and an ace by Meinert.  The Raiders answered with seven straight points with Alex Karika serving on kills by Sarah Metarko and Kelly Treser.  NA came back to tie the game at 9-9 on a kill down the line by Freyermuth.  After Cate Seman scored down the middle for the Raiders, senior OH Kaitlin Bradshaw answered off the Seneca front row blockers to tie the game at 10-10.  Seman scored again down the middle, but Meinert answered with a right handed tip to the the game at 11-11.  After a net violation by NA, Haus went cross court to tie the game at 12-12.  An ace by Meinert gave the Lady Tigers the lead for good at 13-12.  A kill by Haus, an ace by junior OH Katie Mitchell, and a kill by Freyermuth extended the margin to 17-13.  Freyermuth then took over.  A kill off the blockers, a blast down the line, and another block by the Tiger junior made it a 20-14 NA lead.  Alyssa DiMaria answered with an ace, but the game belonged to the Lady Tigers.  Freyermuth scored again off the SV blockers, Menitert went cross court, junior Amanda Knobeloch served an ace, and Bradshaw tipped for a point to put NA at game point, 24-18.  A Seman block kept Seneca alive, but Meinert ended game won with a kill down the middle as NA took a 25-19 victory and a one game to none lead in the match.

Game two belonged to the Raiders as they built an early 8-3 lead behind the hitting of Treser and blocks by Metarko and Karika.  A kill by Bradshaw down the middle and a two-handed cross court kill by Meinert cut the margin to 8-5, but Seneca was not to be stopped.  The Raiders extended the lead to 14-7 before a lift by SV, a net violation by the Seneca, and an ace by Haus cut the margin to 15-9.  Treser and Megan Condit kept the pressure on the Lady Tigers as they extended the lead to 20-9.  After a service error, kills by Treser and Seman made it a 22-10 game.  A Meinert tip closed the lead to 22-12, but a pair of NA errors and a kill by Seman on an overpass ended game two with Seneca Valley taking a 25-12 decision to tie the match at one game each.

After an early 2-2 tie in game three, Haus went off the SV blockers and then served an ace to give NA a 4-2 lead.  After a tip by Miller for a point, Treser and Seman came back with kills to tie the game at 5-5.  Freyermuth answered off a quick set, the Raiders were called for a double hit, and Bradshaw went cross court to put the Lady Tigers back on top, 8-5.  A kill by Meghan Drambel and an NA error cut the lad to one, before Meinert scored on a tip and Haus a kill down the line to make it 10-7.  Seneca again cut the lead to one, but Haus answered down the middle and senior DS Kelsey Davies served an ace to restore a three-point lead at 12-9.  Drambel led a Seneca rally that saw Seman finish with an ace that put the Raiders back ahead, 13-12.  After Haus tied the game on a cross court hit,  the teams exchanged points with ties at 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 with neither team able to get more than a one point advantage.  Drambel then put back an overpass and Karika served an ace to give Seneca a 22-20 lead.  After an NA time out called by Tiger coach Dan Schall, the Lady Tigers put together a 5-1 run to win game three.  A kill by Haus and another by Bradshaw down the line tied the game at 22-22.  After Treser dropped in a dink to give the Raiders a one-point lead, Bradshaw tied the game again with a cross court kill.  After a Seneca time out, senior DS Caroline Koenig served an ace to put NA at game point.  With Koenig serving, the Raiders committed a hitting error to end game three with the Lady Tigers taking a 25-23 victory and a two games to one lead in the match.

Once again, Seneca Valley had the answer as they dominated game four.  After NA took an early lead on a Freyermuth kill down the middle and a Haus blast down the line, a kill by Drambel and an ace by Karika tied the game at 2-2.  SV then went on a 5-1 run to take control of the game.  Led by Treser and Seman, the Raiders built a 15-6 lead before Meinert scored on a two-handed push to stop the run.  Davies then led an NA rally with three points including an ace to cut the margin to 15-9.  Drambel and Treser came back with kills to extend the margin to 19-10 before the Lady Tigers rallied again.  After a Haus kill down the middle, Haus stepped behind the serving lline to serve three points including another ace to cut the lead to 19-14.  After kills by Treser and Metarko, Miller blocked for a point and a Raider hitting error made it a 21-16 game.  A kill by Seman and a block by Metarko pushed the lead to 23-17 before the teams exchanged hitting errors as SV went to game point at 24-17.  The Lady Tigers kept battling back, however, as Bradshaw went cross court, Haus off the SV blockers, and Meinert on a tip to cut the lead to 24-20.  Seman ended the game with a kill down the middle as Seneca Valley won game four, 25-20, to tie the match at two games each.

Early in the fifth and deciding game, Meinert started with an ace but Drambel came back with a kill off the NA blockers to tie the game at 1-1.  After Treser blocked for a point, Haus went cross court and hit the line to tie the game at 2-2.  Treser and Metarko added a block and kill before Miller scored on a kill to cut the lead to 4-3.  A service error by NA and a block by Condit on a joust put SV up, 6-3, before a hitting error cut the lead to two.  The Raiders then took control with five straight points on kills by Condit and Seman, a block by Seman, and an Ace by Metarko to take an 11-4 lead.  After Bradshaw scored on a tip, Seman went down the middle and then blocked for another point to make it 13-5.  After a service error, DiMaria picked up a kill deep down the middle to put the Raiders at game and match point.  After a service error, Haus kept NA alive with a kill down the line.  Treser ended the night and the season for the Lady Tigers with a kill that hit the line to give SV a 15-8 victory in game five and a three games to two win in the match.

It was a tough loss for the defending champion Lady Tigers who gave a great effort but came up just short.  Senior OH Leeanne Haus led NA with 15 kills and three service aces while junior MB Kassie Freyermuth added nine kills and three blocks.  Senior setter Logan Meinert was outstanding in the match with numerous assists along with eight kills and a pair of service aces in her final appearance in an NA uniform.  NA got good play from senior OH Kaitlin Bradshaw and junior MB Tori Pernell at the net along with senior DS Kelsey Davies and senior DS Caroline Koenig in the back against a hard hitting Seneca team. For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Logan Meinert as the Player of the Match.

With the loss, the NA season ended with a final record of 15-4.  Only the top two teams from the WPIAL qualify for the PIAA playoffs so the Lady Tigers season ended.  Seneca Valley advanced to the championship match tomorrow night at Chartiers Valley with match time set for 6:00 pm.

TO ADVANCE TO WPIAL SEMIFINALS

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

The Lady Tigers ended the season for previously unbeaten Latrobe with a 3-0 victory over the Wildcats in the WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinals at Plum High School on Tuesday night.  NA controlled Latrobe, 25-19, in game one, held off a Wildcat surge to win a 27-25 thriller in game two, and put away the victory with a 25-19 win in the third and final game.

In game one after the teams exchanged errors, Latrobe's 6-2 MH Brittany Lhota put back an overpass but senior OH Leeanne Haus answered with a kill down the line to tie the score at 2-2.  After Latrobe took a 4-3 lead, junior MB Kassie Freyermuth scored down the line to tie the game at 4-4.  The teams exchanged the next several points with the score going to 6-6.  Haus then scored down the line and off the front row Wildcat blockers and junior MB Julia Miller put back an overpass to give NA a 9-6 lead.  Latrobe came back on a Lhota kill and several NA errors to take an 11-10 advantage.  After Haus served an ace, Lhota and Katie Svetahor recorded kills to put the Wildcats back ahead, 13-12.  It would be the last Latrobe lead of the first game.  After a Freyermuth kill tied the game, junior MB Tori Pernell put down an overpass to give the Lady Tigers the lead for good.  Senior DS Caroline Koenig then served an ace, Latrobe was called for a lift, and Freymuth tipped down the line to give NA a 17-13 lead.  A kill by Lhota and an NA hitting error cut the margin to one before senior OH Kaitlin Bradshaw hit the back line with a kill to make it an 18-16 game.  Two Wildcat errors extended the margin to four points before April Krovoniak answered with a tip down the middle to cut the margin to 20-17.  The teams exchanged errors down the stretch before a left handed tip by senior setter Logan Meinert pushed the lead to 23-19.  Two straight hitting errors by Latrobe ended game one with the Lady Tigers taking a 25-19 victory and a one game to none lead in the match.

Latrobe jumped off to a 4-0 lead in game two thanks to a Lhota overpass kill and an ace by Krivoniak.  Bradshaw led an NA comeback with three kills with Freyermuth tying the game at 5-5 on a cross court hit.  Lhota and Bradshaw exchanged kills before Lhota went cross court to give the Wildcats a 7-6 lead.  Another kill by Krivoniak and a dink down the middle by Latrobe setter Kasey Feiertag extended the lead to 10-7.  NA rallied to take a 14-11 lead on aces by Meinert and Haus before Lhota stopped the run with a kill off the NA blockers.  After an NA hitting error allowed the Wildcats to tie the score, Miller blocked for a point to give NA a 16-15 lead.  The lead went back and forth at this point with kills by Courtney Stynchula and Svetahor offset by Latrobe hitting errors as Latrobe took a 19-18 lead.  After Meinert tied the game, Krivoniak went cross court to restore the lead.  After Haus put NA on top, 21-20, two service errors and a hitting error by NA gave Latrobe a 23-22 advantage.  A Meinert tip tied the score, but an NA service error put the Wildcats at game point.  Freyermuth and Pernell combined on a block to tie the game again at 24-24.  After a Lhota dink brought Latrobe to another game point, Pernell scored just inside the back line to tie the game at 25-25.  Two straight hitting errors by the Wildcats ended game two with NA winning by a 27-25 score to take a two games to none lead in the match.

The Lady Tigers took control from the outset in game three.  After a hitting error by Latrobe, Meinert served an ace and Freyermuth went down the middle to give NA an early 3-0 lead.  After Lhota stopped the run with a kill off the NA blockers, Freyermuth went cross court, junior OH Katie Mitchell came in to serve an ace, Miller scored down the middle off a quick set and Bradshaw tipped for a point to extend the margin to 8-2.  After an NA service error, Haus scored out of the back row and added another kill down the middle to make it a 10-3 game.  Latrobe rallied to score the next four points on an ace by Allie Campbell, two kills by Krivoniak and an NA hitting error.  Bradshaw answered with a kill and an ace before Kaley Burkardt went down the middle to stop another Tiger run as the score went to 12-8.  With NA up 13-9, senior DS Kelsey Davies served six straight points including an ace with Haus picking up a pair of kills during the run.  With NA ahead by a 20-12 score, Burkardt led a Wildcat rally with two aces while Lhota added a kill and Campbell a tip as Latrobe cut the led to 20-18.  Bradshaw had the answer with a kill off the Wildcat blockers and Freyermuth scored on a cross court hit as NA pushed the lead back to four at 22-18.  A service error by Latrobe and a kill by Pernell put the Lady Tigers at game and match point.  Bradshaw ended the night for the Wildcats with a kill down the line as NA won game three, 25-19, and the match three games to none.

Statistically, senior OH Kaitlin Bradshaw led the way with nine kills and an ace while senior OH Leeanne Haus added eight kills and junior MH Kassie Freyermuth six.  Senior setter Logan Meinert was on target for most of the evening as she set the NA hitters for big kills.  Defense was huge for the Lady Tigers as they found a  way to neutralize Latrobe's 6-2 senior MH Brittany Lhota.  Key digs by senior DS Kelsey Davies, Haus, Bradshaw, senior DS Caroline Koenig kept the ball in play on many of Lhota's attempted kills.

With the win, the Lady Tigers advance to the semifinals tomorrow night against section foe Seneca Valley.  NA and Seneca split the season series with both teams winning at home.  The match will be played at North Hills with the starting time set for 7:30 pm.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the match LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm.  Once again, there is a match at 6:00 pm preceding the NA match as West Shamokin will meet Jefferson Morgan in the Class A semifinals.

PINE-RICHLAND STOPS LADY TIGERS, 3-1

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

With the match tied at 1-1, the Pine-Richland Rams turned up the heat in the final two games to defeat the Lady Tigers, 3-1, at the Senior High gym on Tuesday night.  After P-R took game one, 25-22, NA came back to win the second game, 25-23.  In game three, the Rams captured a 25-19 victory and ended the match with a 25-12 win in game four.  Senior Leeanne Haus led NA with 12 kills while senior OH Kaitlin Bradshaw added nine.

Game one was close throughout with neither team able to build a big lead.  After a kill by Haus and a P-R hitting error gave NA an early 2-0 lead, the Rams came back behind the serving of Maria Nicholas to take a 5-2 lead.  A pair of Ram errors and another Haus kill tied the score before senior setter Logan Meinert blocked for a point to give NA a 6-5 advantage.  The Rams came back on an ace by Caitlyn Scioscia and a pair of kills by Julia McCabe to regain the lead at 10-7.  NA battled back to tie the score on an ace by Haus and a kill down the middle by junior MB Tori Pernell.  After a kill by McCabe and an ace by Hanna Muzzonigro put P-R up 12-10, Bradshaw went down the middle and then dinked for another point to cut the lead to 13-12.  A kill by Haus off the Ram front row blockers and an ace by Bradshaw regained the lead for NA at 15-14, but the Rams came back on a kill by Scioscia and a pair of Tiger errors to go back on top, 17-15.  After Nicholas served an ace, junior MB Julia Miller scored off the Ram blockers to to cut the margin to 18-16.  A pair of P-R hitting errors allowed the Lady Tigers to tie the game before a lift was called on NA.  The Rams committed two more errors and junior MB Kassie Freyermuth put back an overpass to give NA a 21-19 advantage.  After a questionable call that gave the Rams a point on a tipped ball, the Rams added four more points to take a 24-21 lead.  After Pernell scored on a quick set, McCabe went off the NA blockers to give Pine-Richland a 25-22 victory and a one game to none lead in the match.

In game two, the Rams jumped off to a quick 6-2 lead as NA committed a number of hitting errors.  A kill by Freyermuth cut the lead to three and led an NA run of 8-1.  With junior setter Amanda Knobeloch serving, Bradshaw went off the blockers, Haus went down the line, and the Rams contributed several hitting errors as the Lady Tigers took a 10-7 lead.  McCabe led a Ram comeback that tied the game at 10-10 before Bradshaw went down the middle to regain the lead for NA.  A tip by Meinert, an ace by senior DS Kelsey Davies, a Haus kill and a put back of an overpass by Meinert extended the Tiger advantage to 15-11.  Two kills by Miller made it 17-14 before the Rams came back on a kill by Muzzonigro, another by Hayley Morgan and an NA hitting error to tie the score at 17-17.  The teams then exchanged points all the way to 23.  Bradshaw's kill down the middle was matched by Muzzonigro's tip while Freyermuth's cross court kill was answered by a McCabe blast down the middle as the score went to 19-19.  After NA was called for a net violation, Pernell hit the back line to tie the game again.  After Haus went down the middle, Scioscia came back for the Rams to tie the game at 21-21.  After a Haus block, Nicholas blocked for a point to tie the game again.  Haus put the Tigers on top with a kill but Muzzonigro went down the middle to knot the game at 23-23.  After Miller scored on a put back down the middle, Bradshaw scored off the Ram blockers to give NA a 25-23 victory and tie the match at one game each.

In game three, the teams exchanged points early.  After a Miller dink tied the game at 1-1, a Ram hitting error gave NA a 2-1 advantage.  Morgan and Bradshaw exchanged kills as the score went to 4-4.  A McCabe kill down the middle, an ace by Muzzonigro and another kill by McCabe, this time off the NA blockers, gave P-R a 7-4 lead.  The Lady Tigers rallied to tie the score at 9-9 on a kill by Haus down the middle, another kill in the middle by Freyermuth and several Ram hitting errors.  An NA service error gave Pine-Richland the lead for good at 10-9.  After several NA hitting errors, McCabe blocked for a point and Scioscia served an ace to extend the margin to 15-10.  A kill by Bradshaw just inside the back line and a kill by Pernell off the Ram blockers brought the Lady Tigers to within three at 16-13.  Kills by McCabe pushed the margin to 18-14 before a pair of Ram errors brought NA to within two at 18-16.  The teams exchanged hitting errors that brought the score to 20-18 before McCabe scored on a kill from the back row to make it a 21-18 Ram lead.  P-R closed out the game with a 4-1 run with the winning point coming on yet another NA error as Pine-Richland won game three, 25-19, to take at two games to one lead in the match.

Game four belonged to the Rams as they jumped off to a 13-3 lead and never looked back.  Scioscia scored on tweo kills, a Muzzonigro on a cross court hit, but it was McCabe who led the P-R charge with six kills during the run.  Pernell came in to slow the Rams down with a kill off a quick set and another down the middle to cut the lead to 13-5.  An NA hitting error and a cross court kill by Melissa Sirera pushed the Rams back to a 16-5 lead.  Down the stretch, the Lady Tigers did not have an answer for McCabe.  Scioscia also picked up a pair of kills and an ace, Morgan scored on a block, and Kara Peters picked up a kill down the middle as the Rams controlled play.  Haus came back to earn three kills with Bradshaw and Freyermuth also scoring on a kill and block but it was too little and too late as the Rams closed out a 25-12 victory to take game four and win the match, three games to one.

It was a tough night for the Lady Tigers.  An uncharacteristic number of hitting errors aided a good Pine-Richland team that took advantage to defeat NA.  In addition to Haus and Bradshaw at the net, Pernell and Miller added six kills each with Freyermuth adding four.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Leeanne Haus as the NA Player of the Match.

The loss ended the seven-game winning streak in section play by the Lady Tigers and gave them their first loss in the section.  NA will host Greensburg Salem tonight in a non-section match.  The starting time at the Senior High gym is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

 2009 WPIAL GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL

The Lady Tigers will compete again in Class AAA of the WPIAL along with 33 other teams.  Three teams from each section will qualify for the participation in WPIAL Championship play at the completion of the regular season.  All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best section won/loss record.  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and ALL of the tied teams will be declared section champions, will receive a section winner's plaque, and will be entered into the WPIAL tournament.  If three or more teams tie for first place, only those teams will qualify for the playoffs.

In the event of a multiple tie (twor or more teams) for a playoff position, head-to-head will be the first determinant.  If head-to-head does not break the tie, the following tie-breaking system will be used.  If three or more teams tie for the second pace and the tie-breaking system identifies one team as the second place team, the remaining teams will be then tied for third place and the process begins all over with head-to-head competition being the first determinant for establishing the third place team.  If a tie cannot be broken, all tied teams will enter the playoffs.

TIE-BREAKING SYSTEM

1) Section records of the tied teams will be compiled.
2) The team(s) with the best numerical head-to-head section record among the tied teams will enter post-season play.
3) If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter post-season play.

All matches will be played with a best of five game format.

Two WPIAL teams will qualify for the State Championships to be held on November 13-14, 2009.
