BOYS SECOND, GIRLS FOURTH AT PIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Junior Ryan Gil captured third place, second in team points, to lead the Tigers to a second place finish in the PIAA Class AAA Championships at the Parkview course in Hershey on Saturday. NA finished just nine points behind first place West Chester Henderson. The Lady Tigers came in fourth behind three teams from eastern Pennsylvania with freshman Alex Gambill's 16th place finish pacing NA. The girls were the top team from western Pennsylvania in the team standings.
For the boys, senior Eric Balaban placed 25th, senior Jay Cadwallader 29th, senior Mike Smolinski 33rd and senior Luke Badaczewski 39th. For the Lady Tigers, junior Ali Greco came in 32nd, junior Halley Bayer 35th, junior Eleni Mermigas 48th, and junior Kelley Harrington 58th.

GIL LEADS BOYS TO WPIAL TITLE; GIRLS FINISH THIRD
Junior Ryan Gil captured first place to lead the Tigers to the WPIAL Class AAA title at Cooper's Lake in Slippery Rock on Thursday afternoon. NA finished with 92 points to second place Baldwin's 109. The Lady Tigers took third place behind Norwin and North Hills.
In addition to Gil's first place finish, senior Eric Balaban came in 14th, senior Mike Smolinski 20th, and senior Jay Cadwallader 21st with senior Luke Badaczewski 36th as the Tigers' overall depth proved to be the difference in capturing the title. For the Lady Tigers, junior Ali Greco led the way with a 27th place finish with freshman Alex Gambill coming in 32nd and junior Halley Bayer 33rd. Junior Eleni Mermigas finished in 49th and junior Kelley Harrington in 50th to complete the NA scoring.
The title was the fifth consecutive WPIAL championship for the boys! Both teams qualified for the PIAA championships to be held next Saturday at the Parkview course at Hershey.

TIGER BOYS, GIRLS SWEEP TRI-STATE
COACHES
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Both the boys and girls' teams were victorious at the Tri-State Coaches Championship at Cooper's Lake Campground in Slippery Rock on Thursday afternoon. Senior Ryan Gil captured first place and senior Eric Balaban eighth to lead NA to a close victory over Baldwin. Senior Mike Smolinski was 12th and senior Jay Cadwallader finished 16th for the winning Tigers.
The Lady Tigers won by a large margin over second place Oakland Catholic thanks to a good overall team performance. Freshman Alex Gambill came in 20th to lead NA.
The meet is usually a tuneup for the WPIAL Class AAA Championships to be held next Thursday on the same course. The boys enter as the defending champions while the girls finished in fourth place last year.

TIGER TEAMS TAKE TWO FROM BUTLER AND SHALER; GIRLS TAKE SECTION TITLE
Both the boys and girls' teams were victorious over Butler and Shaler at Shaler on Wednesday afternoon in the last section races of the season. Freshman Alex Gambill took first place to lead NA to the wins and the section title as the Lady Tigers defeated Shaler, 15-50, and Butler, 17-42. Junior Ryan Gil won the boys' race leading NA to a 15-50 win over the Titans and a 17-46 victory over the Tornado.
For the Lady Tigers, sophomore Lizzie Appleton was second, junior Halley Bayer fourth, junior Ali Greco fifth, and junior Eleni Mermigas sixth as NA had little trouble posting the two victories. For the boys, senior Eric Balaban was second, senior Mike Smolinski third, senior Jay Cadwallader fifth, and freshman Mike Meehan sixth as the Tigers finished in second place in the section standings.
With the wins, the Lady Tigers finished with a 7-0 section record while the boys completed a 6-1 section mark, the only loss the 28-29 defeat at the hands of North Hills. The Tiger teams will be getting ready for the Tri-State Invitational next Thursday at Cooper's Lake in Slippery Rock. This race is usually the prep for the WPIAL championships that are held the following week on the same course.

TIGER TEAMS TRIUMPH IN CENTRAL
CATHOLIC
INVITATIONAL
Both Tiger teams won their respective races in the Central Catholic Invitational at Schenley Oval on Saturday morning. Junior Ryan Gil took second place to lead the boys to the title with 80 points to 96 for second place Baldwin. Freshman Alex Gambill finished fourth as the Lady Tigers scored 121 points to take first place with Bethel Park second at 143.
For the boys, senior Eric Balaban finished in 11th, senior Jay Cadwallader 16th, and senior Mike Smolinski 16th in team place standings. For the Lady Tigers, sophomore Lizzie Appleton came in 22nd, junior Eleni Mermigas 24th, and junior Halley Bayer 32nd.
The Tiger teams will be in action again on Wednesday when they travel to Shaler for a section tri-meet with the Titans and Butler. Meet time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

LADY TIGERS WIN TWO; BOYS UPSET BY NORTH HILLS
The Lady Tigers defeated North Hills, 27-32, and Seneca Valley, 15-48, at Seneca Valley on Tuesday afternoon, but the boys' team suffered a 28-29 loss to rival North Hills along with a 15-50 win over host Seneca.
Freshman Alex Gambill led the Lady Tigers with a third place finish followed by sophomore Lizzie Appleton in fourth and junior Ali Greco in fifth. NA got valuable team points from junior Eleni Mermigas in seventh place and sophomore Shannon Wagner in eighth position to give them the edge over North Hills.
Junior Ryan Gil took first place for the Tigers, but North Hills placed the second, third and fourth place finishers. Senior Eric Balaban was fifth and senior Mike Smolinski sixth, but North Hills took seventh. Senior Jay Cadwallader came in eighth and junior Nick Minich ninth ,but it was not quite enough as NH managed to eke out the one-point victory.
With the two wins, the Lady Tigers remain unbeaten in section with a 5-0 record while the boys fall to 4-1. The Tiger teams will travel to Schenley Oval on Saturday morning for the Central Catholic Invitational with the races scheduled to begin at 9:00 am.

2009 WPIAL CROSS COUNTRY
The Tigers and Lady Tigers will once again compete in Class AAA of the WPIAL. In the boys' division, there are 51 teams while there are 49 in the girls' competition. Section plaques will be awarded to the winner of each section based on the best section record. Ties for first place will be declared co-champions and both will receive a plaque.
Scoring in the dual meets will be conventional. The top seven finishers will be counted with five scoring and two to displace.
The WPIAL Individual and Team Championships will be held at Cooper's Lake (Slippery Rock, PA) on Thursday, October 29, 2009. The PIAA Championships will be conducted on Saturday, November 7, 2009.
