The Norwin Lady Knights scored three second half goals on their way to a 3-1 victory over NA in a key section contest at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Junior Sophie Batton scored late in the game but a furious Lady Tiger rally fell short.

The Lady Tigers started quickly with good pressure on the Norwin goal.  Batton had two chances in the first minute of the game as NA posted a penalty corner less than a minute into the contest.  At the 2:49 mark, senior captain Kellie Roach went down with an leg injury but would return later in the half.  At the 4:51 mark, Batton had another shot blocked as NA continued the offensive pressure.  In the next minute, the Lady Tigers had three attempts stopped by the Norwin defense and goalie Amelia Staub with freshman forward Emily Humiston and junior Hailey Mancuso getting scoring chances.  Norwin came back at the 7:23 mark behind the play of senior midfielder Evie Romeo to earn a pair of penalty corners, but the NA defense and sophomore goalie Natalie Sorek held off the Knights.  At the 10:30 mark, Humiston drilled a shot into the net, but the attempt came from just outside the circle and was waived off.  Less than a minute later, Roach shot wide of the Norwin net.  Over the next ten minutes, play was contested in the middle of the field with neither team getting a scoring opportunity.  With 7:50 remaining, NA picked up the offensive pressure but could not get off any shots.  With 3:41 left, the Lady Tigers came close again with Batton's shot being blocked and Roach following with two attempts.  On the second shot, Staub made a good save but gave up a long hit to NA.  With 2:55 remaining in the half, Norwin broke across midfield with a 3-on-2 advantage.  Sophomore defender Alexa Sofranko was able to break up the attack with a good defensive play.  With 2:10 left, Humiston broke across the top of the circle but her attempt was blocked.  In the last two minutes, the Lady Tigers kept up the pressure but could not break through the Norwin defense.  The teams went to the halftime break scoreless.  Norwin had two corners while NA had one in the half.

The Lady Tigers came close to taking the lead just 25 seconds into the second half, but Staub made a brilliant save to rob Batton.  NA forced a long hit at the 2:31 mark but could not get off a scoring attempt.  Norwin came back to take the lead a minute later.  Romeo took off across midfield and broke into NA territory where she sent a ball into the circle.  After Sorek made a good save, Sam DeFlitch send home the rebound to put the Lady Knights ahead, 1-0, at the 3:42 mark. The goal seemed to energize the Lady Knights as they broke in again on the NA defense at the 7:30 mark but the NA defense led by senior captain Sarah Boselovic stopped the attempt.  Norwin forced a corner less than a minute later.  Romeo took the inbounds pass, got around an NA defender, and blasted home the second Knight goal from about eight yards out.  Norwin took a 2-0 lead with the goal coming at the 8:20 mark.  Less than five minutes later, Norwin's Brea Mirandou broke down the right side and got off a hard shot that Sorek got a pad on but could not stop as the Knights took a 3-0 lead.  After the third goal, the Lady Tigers regrouped and came back strong.  At the 10:15 mark, senior Rachel Laurent sent a pass through the circle that Mancuso just missed getting a stick on at the right post.  A minute later off a corner, Roach had a good attempt blocked from in front of the goal.  The Lady Tigers forced another corner at the 12:37 mark with Roach blasting another shot off the Knight defense that resulted in an NA long hit.  At the 15:10 mark, Mancuso had yet another attempt blocked in the circle.  Norwin came back to register a corner but could not convert with 14:14 remaining in the game.  With 11:52 left, NA Coach Jen Diaz called a time out.  Romeo answered for the Knights with two shots that the Tiger defense stopped.  With 9:40 left, Humiston came down the left side and got off another attempt that was stopped by Norwin goalie Staub.  After a yellow card on Norwin's Natalie Merz with 6:47 remaining, NA turned up the pressure.  Off a corner with 6:21 left, sophomore Paige Vanerstrom drove a shot wide left of the Norwin goal.  With 6:02 remaining and off another corner, Roach drilled a shot into the net but it was waived off because of a high hit.  Coach Diaz protested in vain as play continued.  Less than a minute later, Batton drove a hard shot past Staub to cut the margin to 3-1 with 4:00 minutes still on the clock.  With 2:00 left off yet another NA corner, two NA attempts were stopped in the circle.  The Lady Tigers forced two more corners in the remaining two minutes but all attempts were stopped as Norwin held on for the 3-1 victory.  NA recorded seven corners in the second half to just three for Norwin.  The final total showed the Lady Tigers with eight corners to five for the Knights.

For most of the game, the Lady Tigers held a territorial edge and only good defense and outstanding play in goal by Staub kept NA off the board.  Norwin used a strong ten minute period in the second half to register the three goals that led to the victory.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Sophie Batton as the Player of the Game.

With the loss, NA dropped to 3-1 in section, 5-2 overall on the season.  The Lady Tigers will next host Penn-Trafford on Saturday afternoon in a 4:00 pm section game.

PENN-TRAFFORD FALLS TO LADY TIGERS, 7-0

The Lady Tigers picked up an impressive road victory at Penn-Trafford on Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 pounding of the Warriors.  After dropping two games to P-T last season, the Lady Tigers wanted to make a statement and did with the big victory.

Early in the first half, the Lady Tigers jumped off to a 1-0 lead.  Senior Captain Kellie Roach connected with senior Michelle Cotter to bring the ball upfield and into the Penn-Trafford circle.  Roach crossed the ball to junior Sophie Batton who was camped out in front of the P-T goal to put it in the back of the net just 2:56 into the contest.  Neither team was able to score in the next twenty minutes as the Warriors battled hard on their home turf.  The game was a midfield battle with sophomores Paige Vanerstrom, Carley Thieret and Emily Hesidence warding off the P-T attack.  Freshman Emily Humiston entered the game with 7:55 left and thirty seconds later slammed the ball past the goalkeeper for an unassisted goal to make it a 2-0 game.  With 5:18 left, Humiston moved the ball upfield and passed to Roach who finished to give NA a 3-0 lead.  With one minute remaining in the half, Roach and Batton connected again resulting in Batton's second goal of the game as the lead went to 4-0.  Sophomore Natalie Sorek collected three saves in net for NA in the half.  The Lady Tigers posted one offensive corner and 12 shots on goal as they took a commanding 4-0 advantage to the intermission.

In the second half, the Lady Tigers were poised to maintain ball control.  The back field had to step up to stop any momentum that the Warriors were trying to build.  The Tiger defensive corps of senior Captain Sarah Boselovic along with sophomores Alexa Sofranko and Maria Baldoneri gained control of the ball and passed well to clear any P-T attempts.  They allowed only three defensive corners throughout the game.  At the 12:40 mark, the Lady Tigers earned another offensive corner.  Batton was able to pull the ball off the goalie's pads and put it into the net to complete her second hat trick of the season.  Six minutes later, NA had a free hit entering the circle.  Cotter sent a hard hit into the circle that Batton got her stick on and tipped it into the goal for her fourth of the game to make it a 6-0 NA lead.  With four minutes left, junior Amanda "Spike" Worsley reentered the game.  With play in the circle, junior Hailey Mancuso fought for a 50/50 ball and found Worsley on the left post where she finished to score the final goal of the game.  In the second half, NA had five shots on goal, three offensive corners.  Sorek completed the shutout as she picked up an additional save.

With the win, NA improved their section record 3-0, the overall mark to 5-1 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will host Norwin tonight in a key section battle.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

LADY TIGERS ROLL OVER LATROBE, 9-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers scored early and often on their way to an easy 9-0 section victory over Latrobe at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Senior forward Kellie Roach led the way with two goals and two assists.  Junior forward Hailey Mancuso and junior midfielder Paige Vanerstrom both added a pair of goals for the winning Lady Tigers.

The Lady Tigers took control early with junior forward Sophie Batton finding the net just 38 seconds into the contest with Roach earning the assist.  Less than a minute later, Batton scored an apparent second goal but it was waived off.  Roach followed with a hard shot that went just wide of the goal.  At the 3:39 mark, freshman Emily Humiston scored off an assist from senior midfielder Rachel Laurent to push the NA lead to 2-0.  Less than three minutes later, Roach took over as she scored from in front of the net with a reverse stick tally with Mancuso picking up the helper.  At the 8:20 mark, Roach scored again off a penalty corner to give NA a commanding 4-0 advantage.  Mancuso scored her first goal at the 10:04 mark extending the lead to 5-0 and forcing Latrobe to call a time out.  For much of the remainder of the half, the Lady Tigers controlled play in the offensive end but could not score.  Head coach Jen Diaz substituted liberally and changed positions of many players with the big lead.  An NA shot went wide at the 18:26 mark.  Sophomore midfielder Alexa Sofranko had a chance less than a minute later but her attempted was blocked in the circle.  Off a penalty corner, Vanderstrom had an attempt blocked with 12:23 left.  Off another corner, Roach almost had her third of the game but her shot went wide.  With 6:50 remaining in the half, Vanderstrom shot wide of the Latrobe goal.  NA finally added another tally with 4:48 left when junior forward Amanda "Spike" Worsley hit the back of the net off a pass from Roach.  With 1:10 left, Mancuso had another good chance but her shot was stopped by Latrobe goalie Anne Jupena.  The half ended with NA well in control with a 6-0 lead.

Most of the second half was played in the Latrobe end of the field with the Lady Tigers applying pressure but coming up empty.  NA earned nine corners during the half but failed to convert any of them.  At the 3:40mark, Mancuso had a good attempt stopped by Jupena.  Less than a minute later, senior midfielder Michelle Cotter send a pass through the circle that the Tigers failed to play.  Worsley came back seconds later with a hard shot wide of the net.  Cotter had two great chances midway through the half but shot wide left on both.  With 14:03 left, Laurent had a shot from right in front of the goal but the Latrobe defense blocked the attempt.  On a corner with 11:03 left, Roach found Laurent  open just to the left of the Wildcat net, but the Tiger senior shot wide.  NA finally broke through on a nice run down the right side by sophomore Carley Thieret who passed to Vanerstrom in front of the net where the NA sophomore cleanly beat the Latrobe goalie to give the Lady Tigers a 7-0 lead with 7:30 left in the game.  On yet another corner, Roach had a shot blocked right in front of the goal.  With 3:17 remaining, Thieret teamed up with Vanerstrom for another score to extend the margin to 8-0.  With time running out, sophomore Emily Hesidence sent a long hit in front of the Wildcat net and Mancuso finished with her second tally of the game to put the finishing touch on a 9-0 NA victory.  Coach Diaz used two goalies in the win with sophomore Natalie Sorek playing the first half and freshman Rebekah Roseblatt the second.

It was a dominating performance by the Lady Tigers who took control of the game in the first minute and never gave Latrobe a chance.  The NA defense, headed up by senior Co-Captain Sarah Boselovic, held Latrobe without a shot at the Tiger goal.  Offensively, six different players scored goals in the easy victory.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named senior Co-Captain Kellie Roach as the Player of the Game.  With the win, NA improved to 2-0 in section, 4-1 overall on the season.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Penn-Trafford on Saturday afternoon for a 1:00 pm section contest.

LADY TIGERS TAKE 3rd PLACE AT
HERSHEY INVITATIONAL

After losing a 5-0 decision to a powerful Hershey squad in the tournament opener, the Lady Tigers came back to take a 4-2 victory over Waynesboro and win the third place trophy.  Junior Sophie Batton led the way with a three-goal hat trick in the 3rd place game.  NA gained a measure of revenge for last year's 7-0 loss to Waynesboro at Hershey.

The Lady Tigers put up a valiant fight against the always tough Hershey squad in the first game.  NA was able to gain a penalty corner at the 20:37 mark.  Although they were unable to convert, the team played a solid game of transition with the left side of senior Rachel Laurent, sophomore Carley Thieret and freshman Emily Humiston dominating the Hershey defense.  The Trojans finally broke the scoreless tie on a goal in circle play with 15:36 remaining.  Hershey added another goal just over two minutes later to take a 2-0 lead to the intermission.  Sophomore Natalie Sobek started in goal for the Lady Tigers and recorded 10 saves in the half.

In the second half, NA came out strong but Hershey's offensive corners were too much for the Tiger defense.  The Trojans scored on two quick corners at the 23:33 mark and 18:36 mark.  The second goal was on a controversial call when sophomore defender Alexa Sofranko was penalized for being struck by the ball while her foot was in the cage.  The officials awarded Hershey a goal on the play as they took a 4-0 lead.  The Trojans added another goal in the last minute of the game on another corner.  Sobek posted another 14 saves in the second half to bring her total to 24 for the game.  Junior forward Sophie Batton played well making great receptions in the forward line.  Sofranko recorded a defensive save.  Hershey moved on to the final with the 5-0 victory.

COACH'S NOTES:  Hershey is traditionally a very tough field hockey team from a very difficult district.  In my 3 years as coach, this year's NA team gave Hershey the most fight on the field.  I am extremely happy with the acceptance of the challenge and the fight to the finish.  Every second of the game they were implementing the game plan.  When facing great teams, they are not only able to create opportunities, they convert on them and that's what Hershey did in this game.  However, this game showed growth in our team and our desire to rise to new challenges. - Coach Jen Diaz

In game two coming off a loss, the Lady Tigers needed to bounce back against a team that easily defeated them last year.  NA came out on fire!!!  Just two minutes into the game, Batton scored on a pass from senior Michelle Cotter to take a 1-0 lead.  The Lady Tigers followed the goal with a corner but could not finish.  After a five-minute battle, Batton scored her second goal of the game at the 16:22 mark on an assist from senior captain Kellie Roach as NA took a 2-0 advantage.  The Lady Tigers continued to pressure the Maidens and earned four consecutive corners although they did not score.  With 8:21 left in the half, however, Batton scored her third of the game assisted by junior Hailey Mancuso.  It was the first hat trick of Batton's varsity career.  Cotter added an unassisted goal with two minutes left in the half as the Lady Tigers took a commanding 4-0 lead to the intermission.  In the first half, NA sent 13 shots on goal and earned six penalty corners.  Sophomore Natalie Sorek had one save in the NA goal.

Waynesboro came out strong in the second half as they tried to get back in the game.  The Maidens scored their first goal just 1:10 into the half.  Junior goalie Megan Conwell was sent into the game and went on to post three saves.  The Lady Tigers continued their attack from the first half piling up seven shots and four more corners.  With NA unable to score, Waynesboro came back with another tally at the 11:45 mark to cut the lead to 4-2.  The Tiger defense then stiffened and regained control of the game.  NA was able to hold off the Maidens for the remainder of the contest and take home the 4-2 victory and the third place trophy.

With the split, the NA overall record now stands at 3-1.  The Lady Tigers will host Latrobe tonight as section play resumes.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

JV UPDATE:  The JV also competed in the Hershey Invitational.  In fhe first game, NA was defeated by Hershey, 1-0.  In the consolation game for third place, the Lady Tiger JVs downed Waynesboro, 3-0, on goals by Katie Tully, Katie Serody, and Jaren Schuger.  Goalkeepers were Bekah Rosenblatt and Megan Conwell.

Senior forward Kellie Roach and junior forward Amanda "Spike" Worsley scored two goals each to lead the Lady Tigers to a 5-0 victory over Hempfield in the section opener at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Freshman forward Emily Humiston scored her first varsity goal for the winning Lady Tigers.   Goalkeeper Megan Conwell recorded the shutout to earn the victory.

The Lady Tigers came up fired up early in the section opener.  NA was able to dominate possession and got two quick offensive penalty corners in the first five minutes.  Unable to convert on the corners early, Hempfield was able to stymie the Lady Tigers for much of the first half.  After a time out, several substitutions were sent in with 5:24 remaining in the half to spark the attack.  With 3:29 left, Roach scored her first goal of the game to give NA a 1-0 advantage.  After the face off, NA quickly attacked the Hempfield circle and earned a penalty corner.  Sophomore Carley Thieret then assisted on Humiston's goal to extend the margin to 2-0 with 2:39 remaining.  NA earned one additional corner before halftime to bring the totals to five penalty corners and seven shots on goal.  Conwell recorded two saves in the first half.

After the break, the Lady Tigers continued to pressure the Spartan goal earning corners with 27:16, 26:50 and 25:38 left in the game.  Roach was able to slam home her second of the game at the 22:37 mark to give NA a 3-0 lead.  Five minutes later, Worsley tallied her first of two goals on the night in corner play.  She followed up with a goal off the left post on an assist from junior Hailey Mancuso as the Lady Tigers completed the scoring on their way to the 5-0 victory.  The second half ended with 13 penalty corners and 10 shots on goal.  Notable players throughout the game included junior forward Sophie Batton, who was instrumental in the accumulation of corners, and senior midfielder Michelle Cotter, whose transitional play kept NA on the attack.

With the win, NA improved to 1-0 in section, 2-0 overall.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Hershey this weekend to participate in the Hershey Invitational beginning at 9:00 am on Saturday morning.
