NORTH HILLS RALLIES TO TOP LADY TIGERS, 3-2

The North Hills Indians rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Lady Tigers, 3-2, at Martorelli Stadium on Monday night.  Sophomore forward Katie Hohmann scored both NA goals on assists from senior defender Larissa Steeb, but an Indian tally with just 3:13 remaining was the difference.

Neither team could mount an attack early as the ball remained mostly in the middle of the field.  At the 4:40 mark, the Lady Tigers took the lead when Steeb headed a ball into the box and Hohmann finished to make it a 1-0 NA advantage.  A minute later, senior midfielder Taylor Gapczynski sent a pass to senior Margaret Nikituk who shot right to the NH goalkeeper.  At the 9:43 mark, Gapczynski drove another shot right at the NHkeeper.  At the 10:20 mark, sophomore Leah Langhans drove a long ball into NH territory, but the Lady Tigers could not get off a shot.  A little over a minute later, junior midfielder Christina Boada gained control of the ball at midfield, but NA could not convert.  At the 12:54 mark, senior Chelsea Henderson drew a foul allowing Langhans to drive a long kick downfield that the NH defense was able to control.  With 13:18 remaining, NA senior goalkeeper Rachel Middleman came out of the net but could not control the ball as North Hills was able to score into an open net.   At the 15:02 mark, Nikituk sailed a shot over the NH goal.  At the 18:30 mark, sophomore Calene Dougherty tried to set up Hohmann, but the NH defense pushed the ball over the goal line.  On the ensuing corner, the Indian defense intercepted a short pass intended for Gapczynski.  At the 19:52 mark, Fuller had a chance but sent it over the NH net.  Less than a minute later, Dougherty pushed a pass to Gapczynski who also shot over the Indian goal.  With 17:58 remaining, junior Danielle Dorazio drove a shot wide to the left of the NH goal.  NA kept the pressure on as Steeb tried to find Dougherty in the box, but the NH keeper came out to capture the ball.  With 16:10 left, Boada rolled a shot that the NH keeper was able to collect.  With 12:00 minutes left, Dorazio sent a ball downfield that Fuller was able to get off a scoring chance but shot wide left of the net.  With 11:12 remaining in the half, Gapczynski had yet another chance but shot went right to  the NH keeper.  With 8:31 left, Dougherty took a pass from Hohmann but her shot rolled over the end line.  A minute later, sophomore Melina Mermigas passed to an open Gapczynski but her shot went wide right.  With 2:43 left, North Hills finally got a scoring opportunity but Middleman made the save.  With 1:25 left, a good NA passing attempt from Nikituk to Fuller to Nikituk to Dougherty did not succeed as the NH defense was able to clear the ball.  In spite of controlling play for most of the first half, the best the Lady Tigers could do was a 1-1 time at halftime.

The second half was more of the same as NA started quickly with good scoring chances early.  Just 1:37 into the half, Gapczynski's free kick resulted in an NA corner kick that was not converted.  At the 3:25 mark, Boada lobbed a ball into the box that was caught by Jamison.  North Hills came back with a shot over the NA goal less than a minute later.  At the 9:00 minute mark, Steeb sent Fuller down the right side where she crossed the ball to Dougherty who shot wide of the net.  Two minutes later, Steeb sent Hohmann free into the box where she collided with the NH keeper with no call forthcoming.  A minute later, Hohmann took a pass from Mermigas and earned a corner kick when her shot was blocked over the end line.  On the corner, the NH defense again was able to clear the ball.  At the 13:10 mark, Boada took a pass from sophomore Carly Brailer but shot wide right.  NA continued to pressure the NH goal with NA earning another corner.  Gapczynski drove the corner kick into the middle of the field where it was passed back to Gapczynski who shot wide left of the net.  At the 14:53 mark, the Lady Tigers finally broke through to take the lead.  Steeb lobbed a ball into Hohmann in front of the net where the Tiger sophomore was able to turn and score to give NA a 2-1 lead.  Less than three minutes later, the Indians tied the score.  Forcing a corner, North Hills was able to score when the NA defense could not clear the ball as the Indians made it a 2-2 game with 22:28 still remaining in the game.  The Lady Tigers came right back when Steeb again found Hohmann open in the box but she could not convert.  A minute later, Steeb passed to an open junior Maria Snyder, but her shot went over the NH net.  With 17:45 left, Hohmann headed a ball right to the NH keeper.  With 14:01 remaining, Middleman had to pick up a bouncing ball in the box off a NH free kick.  With 10:56 on the second half clock, Nikituk created a scoring chance when she sent a ball into the box that several NA players had a chance at but the ball eventually rolled to the NH keeper.  Less than a minute later, a North Hills shot went over the NA goal.  With 7:48 left, sophomore Emily Johns sent Fuller in but her cross rolled over the end line.  With 5:15 left, North Hills came close to getting called for a hand ball in the box on a cross by Hohmann in front of the net, but no call was made.  In the next minute, Gapczynski went down hard after a NH foul, but she was able to continue after a delay of several minutes.  With just 3:13 left, a North Hills player got loose on a breakaway to score the game winner despite the efforts of Brailer and Middleman to stop the play.  NA did not threaten in the remaining minutes.  In spite of controlling play for most of the night and outshooting NH by a wide margin, the Indians were able to come away with a 3-2 victory.

With the loss, the NA section record fell to 4-3, the overall mark to 6-3 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Shaler tomorrow night to meet the Titans in a 7:30 pm section contest.

JV UPDATE:  The JV team defeated North Hills, 4-0, on two goals each by Maria Snyder and Lauren Shivetts.

After a tough loss to Seneca Valley on Thursday night, the Lady Tigers came back to blank Butler, 3-0, at Butler on Friday night.  Junior Danielle Dorazio scored a pair of goals while senior defender Larissa Steeb posted a goal and an assist to pace NA to the victory.  Senior Rachel Middleman was in the net for the win.

Butler started quickly but could not score.  The Tornado's Chelsea Rock hit the cross just 32 seconds into the game and was punched out by Middleman.  Butler followed with three corner kicks, but the NA defense was able to clear all of the attempts.  At 3:24, Butler was called for a foul allowing Steeb to drive a long kick toward the Tornado net that was cleared.  At 5:27, the Lady Tigers had their first scoring chance but senior forward Kylie Fuller drove the ball over the net.  NA won the ball back off the goal kick and started another attack from long range that was stopped by the Butler defense.  At the 6:45 mark, a good passing attack from senior Chelsea Henderson, to Fuller sent the ball up field to sophomore Calene Dougherty in front of the net.  Although Dougherty's shot went wide, it resulted in an NA corner kick.  After NA could not convert on the corner sent in by senior midfielder Taylor Gapczynski, the Lady Tigers earned two more corner kicks.  The first at 8:05 went too far, and Fuller headed the second over the end line at the 8:43 mark.  Three minutes later, Gapczynski sailed another shot over the net.  At the 12:50 mark, Dougherty set up Fuller, but her shot rolled in front of the net where it was picked up by Butler GK Taylor Trovan.  At the 14:30 mark, Fuller had another chance that was stopped by Trovan.  A minute later, a Tornado shot rolled right to Middleman.  At the 17:23 mark, Fuller passed to to Dorazio, but her shot went right to the Butler keeper.  An NA passing play was started at the 18:48 mark with Steeb sending a long ball to sophomore forward Katie Hohmann who returned the ball to Steeb.  The senior defender then sent a pass to Fuller who drove a shot right to Trovan.  Less than a minute later, Butler's Nikki Hladic drove a corner kick that was cleared by the NA defense right to sophomore Emily Johns.  The Butler keeper was forced to clear the ball.  After a foul on NA, Butler's Sam Rossi sent a hard shot wide of the net.  With 12:15 left in the half, Middleman was forced to pick up a rolling Tornado attempt.  With 9:21 remaining, another Butler shot went over the net.  The Lady Tigers again returned the Butler goal kick resulting in an NA corner kick.  Gapczynski lifted a ball in front of the goal where Fuller headed it out of bounds.  With 5:55 left, a corner kick by Hladic was headed out by Steeb.  After a Butler foul, sophomore Brianna Layman got off an attempt from near the Tornado goal, but her shot went right to the keeper.  With just 3:43 remaining, Gapczynski passed to Dorazio who finished to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 advantage.  Neither team had a scoring attempt in the remaining time as North Allegheny took the one-goal lead to the intermission.

The Lady Tigers came out strong early in the second half, putting pressure on the Butler defense.  Just 3:37 into the half, Hohmann passed to Gapczynski who drove the ball right to the Butler keeper.  At 5:27, Butler was called for a foul with Steeb sending the ball into the box where it bounced around before Trovan was able to pick it up.  Less than two minutes later, a Butler attempt went wide to the right of the NA net.  At the 10:15 mark, Steen drove another kick over the Butler defense to Fuller, but she could not convert.  Two minutes later, Gapczynski sent a corner kick past the net, but Henderson was unable to chase it down.  At the 13:20 mark, Butler was called for another foul.  This time, Steeb sent a kick into the box where Dorazio headed it pass the Butler keeper for her second goal of the game to give the Lady Tigers a 2-0 lead.  It took NA a little over two minutes to score again.  At the 15:18 mark, Steeb drove a ball down the field where senior Margaret Nikituk ran it down and passed it back to Steeb.  This time, the Tiger senior defender sent a long high ball into the upper corner of the Butler net to give the Lady Tigers a commanding 3-0 advantage.  At the 16:56 mark, Middleman made a good save to preserve the shutout.  Less than a minute later off another Butler foul, Steeb drove the ball over the Tornado net.  At the midway point of the half, Butler sent an attempt over the goal.  With 16:10 left, another Butler foul gave NA a scoring chance.  John's set up Fuller whose header went right to the Butler GK.  With 13:03 remaining in the game, Dougherty passed to junior Maria Snyder who shot attempt resulted in an NA corner.  On the corner, Johns sent it in to Snyder who rolled it to the Butler keeper.  With 11:30 left, yet another Butler foul gave the Lady Tigers a good scoring opportunity.  Sophomore Leah Langhams drove the ball toward the net where Dorazio headed it over the goal.  Less than a minute later, junior Nicole Goldstein had a chance but her attempt rolled across the box and past the net.  With 10:30 left, Snyder set up Dougherty for a shot that went wide left of the net.  Butler came back with two attempts in the next two minutes with the first sailing over the NA net and the second stopped by Middleman.  With 7:36 left, Middleman was forced to make another save.  With 5:25 left, Middleman came out to make a save, but the Butler shot went over her head and off the post.  John's cleared the ball, but the Tornado earned a corner that was cleared by the NA defense.  With 3:25 left, another NA scoring drive was stopped by the Butler defense.  The Tornado had two more chances in the last several minutes, but both went over the goal.  The Lady Tigers completed the bounce back effort with a 3-0 victory over Butler.

With the win, the NA section record improved to 4-2, the overall mark to 6-2 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will travel to North Hills on Monday night for a 7:30 pm section contest.

JV UPDATE:  The JV team dominated Butler and came away with an 8-0 victory.  Goals were scored by Nicole Goldstein, Christine Palmeri (2), Maria Snyder (2), Monica Lewis (2), and Brenna Burry.

KNOCH FALLS TO LADY TIGERS, 7-2

After the tough loss to Pine-Richland on Monday, the Lady Tigers regrouped and crushed Knoch, 7-2, on Wednesday afternoon.  Seniors Kylie Fuller and Taylor Gapczynski both scored two goals and added an assist each to lead NA to the victory.

The Lady Tigers started quickly with Fuller sending a shot that was stopped by the Knoch keeper in the first minute.  After Knoch's Robyn Tomaszewski attempt went wide of the NA net, senior midfielder Margaret Nikituk set up Fuller who scored to put NA on top, 1-0, just three minutes into the game.  A minute later, Gapczynski's corner kick was headed by Fuller into the goal to give the Lady Tigers a quick 2-0 lead.  Knoch came back with a corner kick by Ashley Bartell that was cleared by senior defender Larissa Steeb.  After an attempt by Gapczynski went wide of the net, Knoch came back to earn another corner kick by Ashley Bartell that Fuller was able to clear at the 7:55 mark.  Less than a minute later, junior midfielder Christina Boada's shot was blocked.  At the 9:30 mark, Knoch's Brittany Faust sent a cross into the box that the NA defense cleared.  At the 10:50 mark, the Lady Tigers struck again when sophomore forward Brianna Layman scored off a cross from Steeb.  NA took a commanding 3-0 advantage.  At the 12:45 mark, Steeb drove a long ball to Gapczynski but the Lady Tigers could not convert.  At the 13:04 mark, sophomore Katie Hohmann sent a cross into the box that Gapczynski put into the goal to extend the NA margin to 4-0.  A little over a minute later, senior midfielder Savanna Kelly forced the Knight keeper to make a good save.  After Knoch's Melissa Spreng sent a ball wide of the NA net, NA Coach Chet Gapczynski begin substituting players liberally.  At the 17:46 mark, Boada had another shot blocked by a Knoch defender.  Just short of the midway point of the half, sophomore Carly Brailer took a pass from Fuller but headed the ball wide.  Less than a minute later, Brailer passed to Fuller who shot wide of the net.  In the next several minutes, Brailer had two more attempts that were stopped by the Knight goalkeeper.  Knoch's Ruthanna Leffler came back with two free kicks, but the NA defense was able to clear both attempts.  With 15:10 left, Gapczysnki had another scoring chance but her shot went wide.  With 13:31 remaining, Steeb had a chance off a Gapczynski pass, but her shot just missed the net.  Seconds later, the Knoch keeper stopped Kelly's attempt.  With 13:00 minutes remaining in the half, sophomore Melina Mermigas sent a corner kick into the box where Layman got off a good attempt that was stopped by the Knoch GK.  At this point, Coach Gapczynski sent junior goalkeeper Brianna Burry in to replace senior Rachel Middleman.  A number of JV players also entered the game.  With 7:10 left, freshman Madeleine Heistand had a shot blocked by the Knoch defense with junior Maria Snyder picking up the rebound and driving toward the net where it was stopped by the keeper.  With 5:55 left, sophomore Emily Johns sent a cross just too far for freshman Christine Palmeri.  In the next several minutes, Palmeri got off a pair of shots that were saved by the GK.  With 3:20 left, Snyder's attempt hit the cross bar.  Less than a minute later, Johns sent an attempt right at the Knoch keeper.  With 1:10 remaining, Burry had to make a good play on a bouncing ball in front of the NA net.  With just 35 seconds left, Heistand's shot went right to the keeper.  The half ended with the Lady Tigers holding a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Tigers continued the pressure in the offensive zone early in the second half.  Just 20 seconds into the period, Boada drove a shot over the goal.  At the 1:40 mark, Fuller sent another shot over the goal after taking a pass from sophomore midfielder Calene Dougherty.  The Knights had a pair of attempts in the next minute with one going over the goal and the second sailing left of the net.  At the 4:35 mark, Nikituk set up Gapczynski but her shot went over the net.  Knoch was able to score after an NA defensive error to cut the margin to 4-1 at the 5:10 mark.  The Lady Tigers came back to again pressure the Knight goal.  A shot by Gapczynski went wide right.  At the 5:45 mark, a good NA passing play from Steeb to Hohmann resulted in another good scoring chance that was stopped by the Knight keeper.  At the 9:00 minute mark, Fuller sent Layman down the left side, but her shot was pulled in by the Knoch goalkeeper.  At the 9:33 mark, Burry made a good save on a Knoch shot.  Less than a minute later, NA almost scored again.  After Dougherty's shot hit the crossbar, Layman picked up the rebound but shot wide right.  At this point, sophomore Alexis Aiken was sent in as goalkeeper along with several other substitutes.  A long throw in by Mermigas resulted in the fifth NA goal when Hohmann was able to deposit the ball in the Knoch net.  Middleman entered the game as a field player and got a chance on a long throw from Steeb but could not convert.  In the next several minutes, NA had three good scoring chances.  At 13:15, a cross from Hohmann was pulled in by the keeper.  Thirty seconds later, a corner kick by Mermigas was saved by the keeper.  At the 15:10 mark, the Knoch keeper had to pick up a rolling ball off the foot of Nikituk.  A Knoch foul resulted in another scoring chance when a quick kick by senior defender Chelsea Henderson went deep into the Knoch end.  Middleman, Mermigas, and Gapczynski all had chances but could not score.  At the 19:31 mark, Fuller drove a shot off the post, but Gapczyski put the rebound home to give NA a 6-1 advantage.  Middleman followed with three chances and was able to convert on the third on a pass from Dougherty to give the Lady Tigers a 7-1 lead with 18 minutes remaining.  After Steeb drove a corner kick into the box that NA could not convert, Coach Gapczynski sent a number of additional players into the contest.  With 10:55 left, Palmeri had two consecutive corner kicks but the Lady Tigers could not convert.  With 9:30 left, Aiken had to go high to pull in a shot by the Knights.  After NA was called for a foul, junior Shannon Hagy headed the ball out of danger.  With 6:15 left, the NA defense cleared a Knoch corner kick.  The Lady Tigers came close to scoring again when Palmeri drove the ball into the box where freshman Kelsey Hake's shot hit the crossbar.  With 4:25 left, freshman Monica Lewis hit the post as NA continued to apply the offensive pressure.  Knoch came back to score their second goal of the game when the NA defense failed to clear the ball.  With 45 seconds left, junior Lauren Shivetts made a nice run through the Knight defense but could not get off a good shot.  With 20 seconds left, a final cross by Johns was just a little too long for Snyder.  With most of the JV squad playing the final minutes, the Lady Tigers completed the 7-2 victory.  Since there was not a JV game, it was a good opportunity for the younger players to get varsity game experience.

With the win, the NA section record improved to 2-1, the overall mark to 4-1 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will host Mars on Monday night in a section contest at Newman Stadium.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

In a tough defensive struggle between two neighborhood rivals, the Pine-Richland Rams scored the only goal of the game midway through the second half to defeat the Lady Tigers, 1-0, at Pine-Richland Stadium on Monday night.  Senior GK Rachel Middleman was outstanding in net throughout the game but P-R's Kristen Murslak was able to get the game winner at the 14:25 mark of the second half.

Neither team threatened in the first few minutes before Stacey Weismann of the Rams sent the first shot of the game wide of the NA net.  After a long attack was cleared by the P-R defense at the 5:00 minute mark, sophomore midfielder Calene Dougherty and senior Margaret Nikituk attempted a give-and-go sequence but could not convert.  At the 7:41 mark, senior defender Chelsea Henderson sent a long shot that was caught by Ram GK Haley Wessel.  Two minutes later, Middleman was forced to pick up a rolling ball through the box.  At the 9:37 mark, sophomore forward Katie Hohmann set up senior forward Kylie Fuller who sent a hard shot that was stopped by Wessel.  At the 12:00 minute mark, sophomore forward Brianna Layman drove a long ball toward Dougherty, but Wessel got there first to stop the attempt.  After a foul on NA at the 12:35 mark, the Lady Tiger defense was forced to clear a Ram chance.  Two minutes later, P-R got the first corner kick.  The Tiger defense not only cleared the corner but set up Fuller and Hohmann for a length of the field run that the Ram defense had to kick out of bounds to stop.  The ensuing throw in by senior defender Larissa Steeb went to senior midfielder Taylor Gapczyski who drove a hard shot off the cross bar and was collected by the Ram keeper.  At the 16:37 mark, a Ram opportunity was stopped by the strong NA defensive corps of sophomore Carly Brailer, Steeb and Henderson who forced P-R into a weak shot stopped easily by Middleman.  With 18:56 left, Hohmann sent a shot wide left of the Ram goal.  Less than a minute later, the NA defense again stopped a corner kick sending Layman and Nikituk down the field before the Ram defense was able to stop the attack.  With 15 minutes left in the half, a Ram shot went wide left of the NA goal.  Two minutes later, Middleman had to make a save on a long shot by the Rams' Sarah Lusby.  With 10:36 remaining, Nikituk's shot was knocked over the goal line by Wessel giving NA a corner kick.  The resulting corner kick was sent in by Gapczynski with both Steeb and Dougherty getting a head on the ball before Wessel grabbed it out of the air.  With 9:00 minutes left, a P-R foul gave Steeb a chance to drive a long ball into the Ram defensive end, but the Lady Tigers could not convert.  After Middleman made a save with 8:14 left, NA kept the pressure on the Ram defense resulting in a foul.  Gapczynski's direct kick was cleared by the P-R defense.  Hohmann then received a long throw from Steeb and got off a hard shot that was punched out and over the goal line by the Ram GK giving NA another corner.  After the Lady Tigers did not convert, Middleman was forced to make on last save on a shot by Lusby.  With time running out, Gapczynski had another direct kick cleared by the Rams.  The half ended with the game still scoreless.

The Lady Tigers had a great chance for the lead just 40 seconds into the half.  On a corner kick by Gapczynski, Steeb headed the ball just wide of the Ram goal.  At the 2:30 mark, Brailer was forced to clear a P-R cross from in front of the net.  At the 5:02 mark, Hohmann received a pass from Steeb and sent it right back resulting in another scoring chance with the shot just wide to the left of the Ram goal.  At the 6:24 mark, Middleman had to go high on a bouncing ball in the box to make the save.  On the ensuing play, Steeb sent a long ball to a breaking Hohmann, but the pass was too long and went right to the Ram keeper.  Less than two minutes later, Henderson had to make a sliding stop to break up a Ram attack.  At the 10:29 mark, Gapczynski made a good defensive play to stop a P-R run.  Less than a minute later, Middleman again had to pick up a rolling ball in the box.  At the 11:40 mark, Fuller forced Wessel to make a tough save to keep the game scoreless.  Less than a minute later, a shot off a Ram breakaway was stopped by Middleman.  At the 14:25 mark, the Lady Tigers failed to clear a ball at midfield allowing Murslak to break in and score.  The Rams got the all important first goal to take the 1-0 lead.  The Lady Tigers came back quickly on a cross from Gapczynski to Nikituk, but Wessel was there to make the stop.  At the 16:28 mark, Middleman made another good save.  After a foul on the Rams, the Tigers had a chance on a long kick by Steeb to Nikituk who passed the ball to sophomore Melina Mermigas whose cross sailed over the Ram net and rolled out of bounds.  Middleman had to make two tough saves over the next several minutes to keep NA within one.  A breakaway was stopped by the NA keeper at the 18:00 minute mark.  At the 21:09 mark, Middleman was there again to make the save.  Less than a minute later, the Lady Tigers mounted another attack on passes by Fuller to junior forward Maria Snyder to freshman midfielder Madeleine Heistand, but Ram keeper Wessel made the stop.  With 16:00 minutes remaining, an NA attempt went wide of the net.  Less than a minute later, Gapczynski's shot was sent over the goal line giving the Lady Tigers a corner that they could not convert.  With 14:15 left, Snyder's attempt bounced wide of the P-R net.  With 13:00 minutes left, Middleman stopped a shot by the Rams' Olivia Brandy.  Seconds later, Middleman had to pull a Ram cross out of the air.  With 11:49 remaining, Dougherty sent a throw into the box but the Rams eventually cleared it out of bounds.  With 10:07 left, Steeb set up Fuller but again Wessel was able to make the save.  After a Rams' corner was cleared by the NA defense, Steeb drove a long ball intended for a breaking Layman, but Wessel was able to pull the ball down first.  With 5:10 left, Dougherty made a good defensive play to stop a PR attack.  With 50 seconds left, Hohmann had one last chance at the equalizer but the shot was stopped by the Ram keeper.

It was a tough loss for the Lady Tigers who pressured the Ram goal for much of the evening.  The P-R defense and the play of Wessel in goal proved to be the difference.  Many thanks to all the NA fans, including a number of students, who traveled to Pine-Richland to cheer for the Lady Tigers!!!  The loss dropped the NA section record to 1-1, the overall mark to 3-1 in the early season.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Knoch tomorrow afternoon for a section contest against the Knights.  Game time is scheduled for 3:45 pm.

JV UPDATE:  The JV team got late goals from Madeleine Heistand and Maria Snyder to defeat Pine-Richland, 2-0, at Pine-Richland on Monday night.

LADY TIGERS SHUT OUT CENTER, 3-0,
FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

Photo Gallery

The Lady Tigers blanked Center, 3-0, at Center on Saturday afternoon for their third consecutive victory without a loss.  Senior forward Kylie Fuller, sophomore forward Leah Langhans, and junior midfielder Christina Boada scored the NA goals.  Senior GK Rachel Middleman was in net for the shutout victory.  Middleman has not allowed a goal to this point in the season.

Center came out fired up after a big 3-1 win earlier in the week against Hopewell.  Just 19 seconds into the game, Center's first shot was wide right.  At the 6:08 mark, the second Trojan attempt hit the football goalpost.  A little over a minute later, Center's Addie Lucci let a hard shot go that was pulled in by Middleman.  Center kept the early pressure on forcing senior defender Larissa Steeb to block another shot in front of the NA goal.  The Trojans came right back with another shot that Middleman had to stop.  At the 13:00 minute mark, Center's Megan Hampe drove another hard attempt right to Middleman.  Finally, the Lady Tigers sent the ball into the offensive end.  Sophomore Katie Hohmann started the attack by taking a pass and sending it to sophomore forward Brianna Layman.  The NA forward then crossed it to senior forward Kylie Fuller who scored to give NA a 1-0 lead at the 14:11 mark of the half.  Less than a minute later, NA was called for a foul.  Center's attempt was headed by Steeb to senior midfielder Taylor Gapczynski who cleared the ball to midfield.  From there, NA started another run at the Center goal.  Fuller drove the ball down the field to Hohman who passed to Gapczynski.  Gapczynski's shot went over the net as the clock approached the midway point of the half.  At 20:31, Hohmann was apparently obstructed at midfield but no foul was called.  At the 21:15 mark, a foul was called.  Once again, the Lady Tigers put together a good passing play from Hohmann to Fuller to Layman whose shot went just over the Center net.  At the 22:50 mark, the Trojans had a great opportunity when the ball rolled free in front of the NA net but was not converted.  With 16:00 remaining in the half, Langhans tried to sent Fuller in but the Center defense was there to stop the attempt.  With 10:12 left, Fuller raced in toward the goal but her shot hit the goal post.  With 4:19 left in the half, another foul was called on Center.  Gapcxzynski's strong attempt went right to Center GK Alex Watts.  With 2:20 remaining, Boada was fouled giving Gapczynski another chance on a direct kick.  The attempt went over the end line.  The half ended with North Allegheny holding a 1-0 advantage.

The Lady Tigers were the team that started strong at the beginning of the second half with Gapczynski getting a header toward the Center goal just 30 seconds into the half.  NA was called offside on the play.  At the 3:39 mark, Langhans headed another ball through the box, but the Center GK came out to make the play.  At the 7:44 mark, senior midfielder Savanna Kelly crossed the ball to Fuller, but Watts again made the stop.  NA kept the ball in the offensive zone and Fuller set up junior midfielder Danielle Dorazio in front of the net.  Watts made an incredible save to rob the NA junior.  At the 9:40 mark, Center was called for a handball near the goal, but Gapczynski's shot went wide right.  A minute later, another handball gave NA a chance.  Steeb sent a good pass to Fuller inside the Center 30 but Fuller's pass to senior midfielder Margaret Nikituk rolled out of bounds.  At the 12:53 mark, Boada stepped in front of a Center pass to collect the ball and send it back to senior defender Chelsea Henderson who cleared it long down the field.  NA kept the pressure on and got another chance when Dorazio passed to Langhans who crossed to Hohmann, but the NA forward's attempt was stopped by the Center keeper.  At the 14:43 mark, the Lady Tigers scored again.  This time, Steeb sent a long ball to Langhans who got control of the ball and beat Watts with a hard shot into the net as NA took a 2-0 lead.  Langhans had two more opportunities in the next several minutes but could not convert.  Boada had a chance at the 19:05 mark but her shot went just over the Trojan net.  At the midway point, Fuller just missed converting a cross.  Less than two minutes later, sophomore midfielder Melina Mermigas tried to catch up to a long through ball from Gapczynski but could not quite get there.  With 16:22 left, a long ball from Henderson was headed by Nikituk over the center defense, but Watts came out to pick up the ball.  With 15:55 left, the Tigers earned a corner kick after a good passing play from Mermigas to junior forward Maria Snyder to sophomore midfielder Calene Dougherty.  The Lady Tigers converted the corner when Boada kicked the ball into the net after Gapczynski's corner kick bounced off several players right to the NA midfielder.  With 14:52 left, the Lady Tigers had taken a commanding 3-0 lead.  Less than a minute later, Center came back but a soft shot was played easily by Middleman.  With 9:45 left, the combination of Mermigas and Langhans earned another corner kick for NA.  Off the corner kick by sophomore midfielder Emily Johns, Steeb, Layman and sophomore defender Carly Brailer all helped to keep the ball in play, but Center was finally able to clear.  With 6:15 left, Layman got off a strong attempt, but Watts was able to make the save.  A minute later, junior defender Nikki Reynolds was able to stop a Center chance with a good clearing attempt.  With 4:44 remaining, Johns sent in a corner kick that was sent out of danger by the Center defense.  Johns had two further direct kicks due to Center fouls but could not score.  With 43 seconds to go, Center's corner kick was cleared to preserve the shutout as the Lady Tigers went on to the 3-0 victory.  It was a great team effort in which Head Coach Chet Gapczynski was able to sub frequently throughout much of the second half.

With the win, the NA overall record improved to 3-0.  The Lady Tigers will visit section rival Pine-Richland tomorrow night for a key early season contest.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

LADY TIGERS BLANK SHALER, 1-0, IN SECTION OPENER

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior midfielder Taylor Gapczynski scored on a penalty kick early in the second half and the Lady Tiger defense held off Shaler for the remainder of the game as NA downed the Titans, 1-0, in the section opener at Newman Stadium on Wednesday night.  Senior GK Rachel Middleman earned the shutout as she held Shaler off the board throughout the contest.

Shaler held a territorial edge early in the game but neither side was able to get a good scoring chance.  Shaler's Angie Bagwell drove a direct kick from 30 yards at the 1:55 mark, but Middleman was able to make the save.  At the 8:15 mark, Allison Brasile broke free down the right side but shot wide from 25 yards.  The Lady Tigers began to take the advantage away from the Titans at around the 10:00 mark.  Senior forward Kylie Fuller had a chance from 15 yards but was stopped by Shaler GK Amie Dobracki.  Shaler's Stephanie Cigna came back with an opportunity from the left side but Middleman made a diving stop pushing the ball over the goal line.  On the ensuing corner kick, the NA defense cleared the ball.  The Titans' Kelly Lang broke across the middle at the 17:34 mark but shot over the NA goal.  Midway through the half, Gapczynski had the best NA chance but her long attempt from 30 yards hit the football crossbar just over the Shaler goal.  A minute later, a header by Fuller went left of the net and was caught by Dorbracki.  Gapczynski came back with another long attempt seconds later but was stopped by the Shaler GK as NA started to turn up the offensive pressure.  With 17:07 remaining, Stephanie Miller broke in from the right side but shot over the NA goal.  In the remaining time, neither team could get much of a scoring chance.  With 10:22 left, sophomore Leah Langhans drove a hard shot over the goal on a direct kick from 32 yards away.  With 5:27 left, Middleman was forced to make a  save on an attempt by Amanda Garver.  Time ran out in the half with the game remaining scoreless.

Early in the second half, the Lady Tigers came out strong.  Sophomore Brianna Layman had a good chance just 34 seconds into the half, but Dobracki made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.  Gapczynski followed with a long attempt from 25 yards that was stopped after one hop by Dobracki. Shaler answered with two chances from the right side by Brasile but both attempts went high and wide right with 32:30 still left in the half.  NA finally was able to take the lead after a foul was called on Dobracki in the box.  Gapczynski calmly drove the penalty kick into the left corner of the net to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 advantage at the 8:38 mark.  The NA goal seemed to energize Shaler over the next several minutes as they put together three scoring chances.  At the 10:20 mark, Chelsea Bahorich raced down the left side and let a hard shot go from 15 yards, but Middleman was there to make the stop.  Less than a minute later, Brasile lifted a high shot from the right side that hit the top of the NA net.  At the 18:59 mark, it was Cigna with a chance from 30 yards but Middleman was there again to catch the ball on the fly.  Just after the midway point, the Lady Tigers came back to recapture the offensive momentum.  Gapczynski's long attempt from 30 yards was tipped at the last second over the goal.  Thirty seconds later, Fuller had a chance from just to the right of the Shaler net but could not convert.  As time began to run down, Shaler started to press forward.  Kristie Hamilton sent a hard shot from 30 yards that Middleman caught on a hop.  With Shaler pressing, the Lady Tigers drove a long rolling ball into the box that Dobracki was just able to get to before Fuller arrived.  The NA defense, led by seniors Larissa Steeb and Chelsea Henderson, along with junior midfielder Christina Boada, were able to stymie most of the Shaler runs in the remaining time.  In the last minute, Cigna sent a drive in from the 18 that Middleman caught.  With time running out, Hamilton lifted a shot from the right side that the NA keeper pulled out of the air as the game ended.  The Lady Tigers completed the 1-0 shutout.  In a defensive contest, there were only three corner kicks with Shaler earning two.

It was a strong defensive effort by the Lady Tigers as they kept an experienced Shaler squad off the board.  Neither team had many chances to score throughout the contest, but NA was able to take advantage of the PK to earn the victory.  For her efforts in the midfield area and for converting the penalty kick, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Taylor Gapczynski as the Player of the Game.

With the win, NA moves to 1-0 in section, 2-0 overall.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Center on Saturday afternoon for a 12:30 pm non-section contest.

FULLER'S FIVE GOALS LEAD LADY TIGERS TO 8-0 VICTORY OVER KISKI AREA IN SEASON OPENER

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior forward Kylie Fuller scored five times to lead the Lady Tigers to an impressive 8-0 victory over Kiski Area in the season opener at Newman Stadium on Saturday night.  After building a 2-0 halftime lead, NA scored six second half goals as sophomore midfielder Calene Dougherty, junior forward Maria Snyder and junior midfielder Christina Boada all added goals to the NA total.

Neither team was able to get a scoring chance in the first six minutes of the game.  Fuller took a pass in front of the net but shot wide at the 6:25 mark to give an indication of what was to come.  NA began to pressure the Kiski defense with a long attempt being caught by Cavalier goalkeeper Sarah Geffel less than a minute later.  Fuller then broke loose on a long run and beat Geffel with a chip shot over her head to give NA a 1-0 advantage at the 11:13 mark.  Less than a minute later, sophomore forward Katie Hohmann made a good play to strip the ball in the box, and Fuller was able to score her second of the game as the Lady Tigers took a 2-0 lead.  NA continued to pressure the Cavaliers for the remainder of the half but could not score.  Fuller had a chance at the 13:15 mark but Geffel made an easy save.  Dougherty broke free down the right side at the 15:10 mark, but Geffel came out to take the ball away.  A minute later, Kiski had their first scoring opportunity when Aileen Feeney broke across the middle, had her shot blocked, and then forced NA goalkeeper Rachel Middleman to make a good save.  At the 17:15 mark, senior midfielder Taylor Gapczynski sent a high direct kick from long range that hit the football upright.  At the 18:25 mark, Geffel robbed Fuller from point blank range and held on to deny the NA forward her third goal.  With 19:15 remaining in the half, Boada sent a hard shot from 25 yards away just wide of the KA goal.  With 16:01 left, Gapczynski drove another long attempt that Geffel caught.  The Cavaliers came back with 13:34 left with Hollie Compton sending the ball wide of the NA net.  A minute later, Fuller raced after a loose ball in the box, but Geffel came out to collect it first.  With 10:28 remaining, Fuller sent a cross through the box that was cleared by the Kiski defense.  On a corner kick with 4:39 left, Gapczynski lifted a high ball in the box that was headed right to the keeper by senior midfielder Savanna Kelly.  The Cavaliers had one last chance when Feeney made a nice move through the box that Middleman stopped by pushing it over the goal line.  The half ended as NA cleared the Kiski corner kick.  The Lady Tigers took a 2-0 advantage to the intermission.  Both teams posted two corner kicks in the half, although NA outshot the Cavaliers, 12-4.

The Lady Tigers came out strong in the second half and quickly took control of the game.  Just 1:50 into the half, sophomore midfielder Brianna Layman had two chances in the box with the first attempt blocked and Geffel stopping the rebound.  Gapczynski then sent two strong shots toward the KA goal with the first going wide and the second caught by the KA keeper.  A minute later, Layman broke free in the box for another attempt that Geffel made a good save on but Fuller was able to get the rebound and roll it into the net for her third goal of the game to give NA a 3-0 lead at the 5:47 mark.  From this point, the Lady Tigers dominated the contest.  Less than a minute later, senior midfielder Margaret Nikituk had a good chance but her left footed attempt was stopped by Geffel.  The Lady Tigers continued to pressure the Kiski defense with Fuller sending a high shot toward the right corner that Geffel just tipped over the cross bar at the 9:50 mark.  At the 12:07 mark, Hohmann slipped the ball past a diving Geffel and then sent an attempt just wide of the open net.  At the 14:50 mark, Fuller rolled another shot toward the net that Geller was forced to stop.  Snyder broke free a minute later but sent a shot just wide to the left of the Kiski goal.  At the 16:19 mark, Dougherty stole the ball near the sideline, raced along the right side and beat Geffel with a low shot just inside the left post to make it a 4-0 game.  Less than a minute later, Fuller converted a good cross from in front of the net for her fourth goal to make it a 5-0 NA lead.  NA continued to dominate the game as Gapczynski had two chances from 25 yards, the first stopped by Geffel and the second wide left of the net.  Fuller broke free on another long run at the 19:30 mark but could not convert.  Snyder got free on a breakaway and beat Geffel with a good shot off her left foot to extend the margin to 6-0 with 18:00 minutes remaining.  A little over a minute later, Fuller tallied her fifth of the game on another breakaway as the score went to 7-0.  With 15:15 left, Fuller sent a cross through the box that NA could not finish.  With 13:10 remaining, Boada shot wide left from 20 yards away.  At the 29:22 mark, Boada raced through the box and sent a strong shot into the net from the right side to complete the NA scoring as they took the 8-0 lead.  With 3:10 left, Middleman was forced to play a bouncing ball in the box.  It was the first Kiski shot of the half.  With the NA reserves in the contest, Geffel was forced to play a long attempt by forward Christine Palmeri.  Time ran out without further scoring as NA completed the 8-0 rout.  In the second half, the Lady Tigers outshot the Cavaliers 20-1 and finished with a 32-5 edge in shots.  Corner kicks favored NA, 4-2.

It was a strong effort by the Lady Tigers in the opener.  NA had difficulty finishing for much of the first half but made up for it after the break.  Defensively, the back line of senior Larissa Steeb, senior Chelsea Henderson, and sophomore Leah Langhans keep the Cavaliers from any good scoring chances.  For her efforts in leading the offensive attack, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Kyle Fuller as the  Player of the Game.

With the win, NA moves to 1-0 in non-section play as they prepare for the section opener against Shaler on Wednesday night at Newman Stadium.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:30 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:45 pm.
