GIRLS' TENNIS LADY TIGERS BLANK RIVAL NORTH HILLS, 5-0 The Lady Tigers rebounded from their only loss to crush rival North Hills, 5-0, at North Hills on Wednesday afternoon. Junior Kelly Whelan posted a straight set victory without losing a game at #1 singles to pace NA to the win. Senior Stephanie Smyers at #2 singles and senior Vaidehi Tata at #3 also won in straight sets. In doubles play, the sophomore team of Mikayla Becich and Tiffany Kollah lost only one game in a straight set victory at the number one position. At #2 doubles, senior Amy Callahan and sophomore Sunjoo Lee downed the Indian team of Rickenbrode and Brunner, 6-0 and 6-2. With the victory, the Lady Tigers are now 6-1 in section, 7-1 overall. The section singles tournament will begin this afternoon at the Senior High courts beginning at 1:00 pm. JV UPDATE: The JV team continued their unbeaten streak with a 5-0 win over North Hills at the Senior High courts. The JV record in now 10-0. MATCH SUMMARY

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * PINE-RICHLAND STOPS NA UNBEATEN The Lady Tigers lost for the first time in seven matches at Pine-Richland High School on Monday afternoon as the Rams took a 4-1 decision. Junior Kelly Whelan was the only NA winner taking a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Olivia Heim. The loss dropped the NA section record to 5-1, the overall mark to 6-1. The Lady Tigers will continue section play tomorrow with a trip to rival North Hills for a 3:30 pm match. JV UPDATE: The JV team ran their unbeaten streak to nine with a pair of wins. On Friday, NA downed Shady Side Academy, 3-2, and on Monday, the Lady Tiger JVs took a 3-2 victory over Pine-Richland. MATCH SUMMARIES

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * LADY TIGERS TAKE CARE OF BUTLER, 4-1, The Lady Tigers won their sixth straight match without a loss as they defeated Butler, 4-1, at the Senior High courts on Thursday afternoon. Once again, junior Kelly Whelan at #1 singles and senior Stephanie Smyers at #2 led the way with straight set victories with the doubles teams coming through with the deciding match victories. Whelan downed Carolyn Shetter of the Tornado, 6-1, 6-1, while Smyers defeated Heather Santa by the same scores. At #1 doubles, the sophomore team of Mikayla Becich and Tiffany Kollah took a straight set victory over the team of Madison Kerr and Rosei Nesbit, 6-2, 6-2. At #2 doubles, sophomore Sunjoo Lee and senior Amy Callahan rallied after losing the first set to down Lauren Weiland and Marke Harrison, 3-6, 6-0, and 6-1. With the win, NA improved to 5-0 in section play, 6-0 overall. The Lady Tigers will host Pine-Richland on Monday afternoon in a key section match with the starting time set for 3:30 pm at the Senior High courts. Junior Kelly Whelan and senior Stephanie Smyers both won in straight sets without losing a game to pace NA. In doubles play, the sophomore team of Mikayla Becich and Tiffany Kollah won in straight sets over Kelsey Barner and Morgan Mechlenburg of the Panthers. With the win, NA improved to 5-0 overall on the season. The Lady Tigers will host Butler this afternoon in a 3:30 pm section match at the Senior High courts. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * MARS NO MATCH FOR LADY TIGERS IN 5-0 SHUTOUT Section play continued for the Lady Tigers on Tuesday afternoon at Mars as NA captured a 5-0 victory over the Planets. In singles play, junior Kelly Whelan, senior Stephanie Smyers, and senior Vaidehi Tata all won in straight sets to pace NA to the victory. In doubles play, sophomores Mikayla Becich and Tiffany Kollah defeated Carpenter and Bunner, 6-1 and 6-2, at the #1 position. At number two doubles, sophomore Sunjoo Lee and senior Amy Callahan had to come from behind to win in three sets to preserve the shutout. With the win, NA improved to 4-0 in section play. The Lady Tigers will host Franklin Regional this afternoon in a non-section match at the Senior High courts. Match time is scheduled for 3:30 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * LADY TIGERS TOP SENECA VALLEY, 5-0 The Lady Tigers won their third straight match without a loss with a 5-0 blanking of Seneca Valley at Seneca on Thursday afternoon. The doubles team of sophomores Mikayla Becich and Tiffany Kollah along with the team of senior Amy Callahan and sophomore Sunjoo Lee both won in straight sets losing only four games. In singles play, junior Kelly Whelan shut out Elisa Park with a pair of 6-0 victories at #1 singles. At number two singles, senior Stephanie Smyers took a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Annie Ryan while at #3 senior Vaidehi Tata also won in straight sets with 6-0 and 6-3 wins. The win improved the NA section record to 3-0 in the early season. The Lady Tigers will continue section play on Tuesday when they travel to Mars for a 3:30 pm match. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * LADY TIGERS KNOCK OFF KNOCH, 5-0 Coach Michelle Weniger's Lady Tigers won their second straight section match of the new season with a 5-0 blanking of Knoch at the Senior High courts on Wednesday afternoon. Once again, the singles players were dominant losing only six games in sweeping the Knights. At #1 singles, senior Stephanie Smyers downed Jenna Kanterman, 6-0 and 6-4. At the number two singles position, sophomore Mikayla Becich swept Brooke Ross, 6-1 and 6-0, while senior Vaidehi Tata took a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kiki Gordon at #3 singles. In doubles play, sophomore Tiffany Kollah teamed up with sophomore Sunjoo Lee to win in straight sets at the #1 doubles. At number two doubles, it was senior Amy Callahan and junior Kaitlin Harris taking a hard-fought three set win over Abby Conlon and Peggy Kanterman. The victory improved the NA section record to 2-0 in the early season. The Lady Tigers will continue section play this afternoon when they travel to Seneca Valley to meet the Raiders in a 3:30 pm match. MATCH SUMMARY
* * * * * * * * * * * * * LADY TIGERS BLANK HAMPTON, 5-0, The defending PIAA champion Lady Tigers got off to a successful start to the 2009 season with a 5-0 shutout of Hampton at the Hampton Community Park on Monday afternoon. In singles play, junior Kelly Whelan, senior Stephanie Smyers, and senior Vaidehi Tata all won in straight sets losing only seven total games in sweeping the Talbots. Both doubles teams also won in straight sets. At #1 doubles, sophomores Mikayla Becich and Tiffany Kollah downed the top Talbot team, 6-3, and 6-1. In the number two doubles match, sophomore Sunjoo Lee teamed up with senior Amy Callahan to down Conley and Krivacek of Hampton, 6-1 and 6-3. With a win in the opener, the Lady Tigers will continue section play tomorrow afternoon when they host the Knoch Knights. Match time at the Senior High courts is set for 3:00 pm. JV UPDATE: The JV team also got off to a good start with a 4-1 victory over Hampton at home on Monday afternoon. NA swept the singles matches behind Julie Arnold, Mara Ott and Marissa Bella.
