Senior forward Patrick Moynihan scored in the overtime period to give the Tigers a 5-4 decision over rival North Hills in a PIHL contest at the RMU-Island Sports Center on Monday night.  Senior defenseman Tyler Hagy, junior forward Jordan Beck, senior captain Brady Waldschmidt and senior forward Thomas Gillespie all scored goals for the winning Tigers.  Moynihan also posted a pair of assists.

The Tigers started quickly when Waldschmidt checked the puck from NH's Derek Belke just after the opening faceoff.  Gillespie picked up the loose puck and skated in to score an unassisted goal just 12 seconds into the game.  Following the play, Belke drew unsportsmanlike and misconduct penalties giving NA the first power play of the game.  The Indians came back to tie the game at 1-1, however, with a shorthanded goal at the 14:06 mark scored by Everett Lederer.  NA controlled play over the next several minutes and had several scoring opportunities.  Junior defenseman Matt Ogle shot from the point but was stopped as was Waldschmidt after taking a pass from behind the net from Gillespie.  Sophomore defenseman Ryan Stupy then shot wide, senior forward Brian Nimmo had his attempt stopped by the NH goalie, and a pass from junior forward Andrew Siess to Stupy in the slot that was shot wide.  At the 8:50 mark, Waldschmidt tipped in a shot by Ogle from the point, but the goal was waived off due to a high stick.  Seconds later, the Indians' Jeff Nolan put NH on top, 2-1, on an assist from John Prasko.  With 5:47 remaining, the Indians had a 2 on 1 but were stopped by junior goalie Lindsay Holdcroft who deflected the attempt over the net.  Ogle was sent off for interference at the 5:38 mark giving NH their first power play.  The Tigers had two good scoring chances shorthanded, but Moynihan was stopped by NH goalie Michael Panza.  Later in the power play, freshman Jake Hubert had a chance but his shot was blocked on the way to the goal.  At the 4:09 mark, junior forward Kevin Kelly was called for tripping giving NH a two-man advantage.  The Indians were called for being in the crease at the 3:23 mark.  A soft attempt by NH's Gary Punzak was stopped by Holdcroft with 2:18 left in the period.  The Tigers killed off the penalties, and senior forward Bo Schwab had a chance at the other end but Panza made the save.  With 1:14 remaining, junior forward Jordan Beck tipped in a shot sent in from the point by junior defenseman James Harper to tie the game at 2-2.  The first period ended with the score even at two goals each.  NA outshot NH, 9-7, in the period.

The physical play picked up in the second period.  A hip check by NH's Kevin Lubbert on Schwab at the 13:59 mark set the tone.  Schwab took a retaliatory elbowing penalty nine seconds later to give NH a power play.  At the 13:17 mark, Ogle was sent off for cross checking and was then given a 10 minute misconduct penalty.  Hagy came back for the Tigers with a shorthanded opportunity at the 13:02 mark, but his shot was stopped by Panza.  The Tigers again killed off the two man advantage with Waldschmidt leading the penalty killing unit.  After neither team could gain an advantage, Lubbert was called for slashing at the 9:35 mark giving NA a power play.  With NA unable to convert, Lederer picked up the puck in the NH zone and skated all the way in and scored to give the Indians a 3-2 lead with 7:44 remaining in the period.  With 7:07 left, freshman forward Josh King got off a hard shot but was stopped by the NH netminder.  With 3:53 left, Siess and Kelly had a two-on-one thwarted by the Indians' defense.  With 2:50 left, Harper set up King who narrowly missed the net.  Holdcroft had to made a sparking kick save with 1:16 remaining to keep the deficit at one.  The period ended with North Hills holding a 3-2 advantage.  The shots were even at six each.

The physical play continued into the third period with NH's Ryan Zamboni picking up a roughing call early.  NA could not score but had numerous chances with Ogle shooting wide and Panza stopping a shot by Waldschmidt with Gillespie's rebound attempt deflected over the goal.  After Hubert had his shot stopped at the 10:07 mark, the Indians' Daniel Sullivan was sent off for interference with 9:48 remaining in the period.  The Tigers were able to take advantage of the power play eleven seconds later as Hagy tied the game on assists from Moynihan and Waldschmidt.  At the 8:55 mark, Nimmo set up Schwab for a good attempt but Panno was there to make the save.  At the 8:16 mark, Waldschmidt's attempt was deflected out of play.  After Kelly just missed the net, Moynihan scored an apparent goal at the 6:48 mark, but a hand pass call waived off the goal.  It was the second NA goal that was waived off in the game.  After Waldschmidt was stopped on yet another deflection, the senior captain came back to score and give NA the lead, 4-3, after taking a pass from freshman forward Ryan Worsena from behind the NH net.  With 1:27 left, Moynihan was called for charging giving the Indians a late power play.  It took NH just five seconds to get the equalizer as Derek Belke scored to tie the game at 4-4.  Neither team scored in the remaining time and the game went to extra time tied at 4-4.  NA outshot the Indians, 10-5, in the third period.

The Tigers dominated the overtime period before getting the game winner.  Ogle had an attempt 53 seconds into the extra period but missed wide.  With 3:39 left, Moynihan broke in on Panza but the NH goalie made the stop.  Fourteen seconds later, Gillespie took a pass from Waldschmidt and shot wide of the goal.  NA kept up the pressure as Gillespie sent Hagy in but Panza was able to make the save.  With 2:36 left, Moynihan sent a cross ice pass to Ogle who hit the  post.  With 2:01 left, North Hills was called for hooking.  Just nineteen seconds later, Moynihan broke in on the left side and was tripped.  While sliding on the ice, the Tigers senior was able to slip the puck through the 5 hole for the game winner.  In the overtime, NA had four shots to none for NH.  In the game, the Tigers outshot the Indians 29-18.

With the win, the NA league record improved to 6-3-2 on the season.  NA will host section rival Seneca Valley on Friday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 5:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.

LATE GOAL GIVES PINE-RICHLAND
1-0 VICTORY OVER TIGERS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers battled top-ranked Pine-Richland to the wire on Friday night only to see the Rams score a short-handed goal with just 3:05 remaining to edge NA, 1-0, in a PIHL contest at Bladerunners in Warrendale.  Junior goalie Lindsay Holdcroft held off P-R throughout the game making a number of spectacular saves to keep the Tigers in the game.

The Rams had the first scoring chance early in the game when Ryan Battin shot wide of the NA net just 1:10 into the contest.  The Tigers came back a minute later when senior forward Patrick Moynihan set up senior captain and forward Brady Waldschmidt in front of the net, but P-R goalie Dan Szymanski made the stop and then turned aside the rebound attempt.  The Rams threatened again less than a minute later, but senior forward Thomas Gillespie cleared the puck from in front of the Tiger goal.  At the 4:52 mark, the Rams' Stephan Juchno was called for interference giving NA the first power play of the game.  Waldschmidt had two good scoring chances but was stopped by Szymanski on the first and shot the second wide of the Ram goal.  Later in the period with 7:39 left, Holdcroft robbed Andrew Carto with a sparkling glove hand save as the Ram player came in alone on a breakaway.  With 4:20 left, Moynihan had a chance from in front of the goal, but Szymanski again made the save.  With just under three minutes remaining, freshman forward Jake Hubert shot over the goal and sent a rebound wide as NA pressured the Ram goal late in the period.  With just 1:15 remaining in the period, sophomore defenseman Ryan Stupy sent a hard shot from the right point that Szymanski had to stop.  Neither team had a good scoring chance in the remaining time as the first period ended in a scoreless tie.

Early in the second period, the Rams' Jordan Banyas broke in alone on the NA net, but Holdcroft made another tough save to keep the game scoreless just 1:50 into the period.  Less than two minutes later, Hubert answered with a good scoring chance but again could not beat Szymanski.  At the 4:00 minute mark, Ram assistant captain Matthew Lohman was sent off for tripping giving the Tigers their second power play of the game.  Once again, NA had good scoring chances but could not convert.  Junior forward Kevin Kelly took a pass from Hubert in front of the net but was stopped by the P-R netminder.  Later in the power play, senior defenseman Tyler Hagy drove a hard shot that Szymanski turned aside.  Hagy then drew a tripping call giving the Rams their first man advantage of the game.  P-R got off three shots during the power play, but Holdcroft turned all of the attempts away as the game remained scoreless with 7:04 remaining in the period.  Just after the Tigers killed off the P-R power play, Waldschmidt came back with a good attempt but was stopped by Szymanski.  A pushing match in front of the net resulted in a pair of roughing penalties as NA's senior forward Bo Schwab and P-R-s Lohman were sent to the box.  With 3:27 left, Ram captain Eric Febert broke away and came in all alone on the Tiger goal, but once again Holdcroft came up with a spectacular save to keep the game scoreless.  Junior Jordan Beck was called for interference with 3:08 remaining as NA had to kill off another Ram power play.  Good defensive efforts by Waldschmidt and Hagy, along with two good saves by Holdcroft, again stymied the Rams.  With a minute remaining, Waldschmidt came back after killing the penalty with two good attempts, but Szymanski made the stops.  As time was running out in the period, Febert set up forward Toby Nehnevajsa in front of the NA net, but Holdcroft made a sliding save to keep the game scoreless after two periods of play.

The physical play picked up in the third period with both teams pressing for the go ahead goal.  Just 2:33 into the period, Battin sent a hard shot toward the NA net that Holdcroft had to pull out of the air.  Twenty seconds later, Danny Cole set up Febert in front of the Tiger goal, but Holdcroft was there again.  At the 3:11 mark, Schwab was sent off for high sticking with Waldschmidt called for tripping 34 seconds later giving the Rams a 5-on-3 power play.  Early in the advantage, Moynihan stole the puck and forced Szymanski to make two saves.  The Rams broke back with a 3-on-1 but were offside on the play.  Once again, the Tigers were able to kill off the penalties and earned a power play of their own when Lohman was called for elbowing with 9:27 remaining. NA kept the puck in the P-R zone for most of the advantage with their best chance coming when Hubert set up Kelly in front of the net.  Szymanski made a tough skate save to keep the puck out of the net.  Kelly had another chance with 5:40 left and Moynihan followed with a backhanded attempt, but Szymanski was there to make both saves.  NA had a brief power play when Luke Wagner was sent off at the 5:37 mark.  Six seconds later, Hagy was whistled for roughing in front of the net to even the sides.  With 3:53 remaining, Febert called for tripping giving NA a two-man advantage and a chance for the lead.  Waldschmidt forced Szymanski to make another tough save with 3:37 remaining, but the Rams killed off the first half of the penalty.  With P-R still a man short, the Tigers lost the puck in front of the NA net  where Battin drove a high shot over the shoulder of Holdcroft and into the net.  The Rams took a 1-0 lead with just 3:05 left.  The Tigers tried to pressure the P-R goal in the remaining time, but the Rams were content in just clearing the zone.  With 37.6 left, Moynihan was sent off.  NA Coach Jim Black was still able to pull goalie Holdcroft as the Tigers kept the puck in the Ram zone, but time ran out.  Pine-Richland was able to hold on for the 1-0 victory.

It was a tough loss for the Tigers who were able to field a roster of only 16 total players for the game because of injuries.  It was a strong effort for NA as they battled the #1 ranked Rams for most of the game.  Only the strong goaltending of Szymanski kept the Tigers off the board.  On the defensive end, the Tigers were able to stymie the high scoring Rams throughout the contest.  For her efforts in the net, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Lindsay Holdcroft as the Player of the Game.

With the loss, the NA record fell to 5-3-2 on the season.  Pine-Richland improved to 11-1-1 as they extended their lead in Section 2.  The Tigers will meet rival North Hills on Monday night at the RMU-Island Sports Center as PIHL play continues.  Game time is scheduled for 7:15 pm.

PLUM RALLIES TO TIE TIGERS, 2-2

The Tigers built a 2-0 lead early in the second period only to see Plum score twice in the period to tie the game.  Junior forward Andrew Siess and senior captain and forward Brady Waldschmidt tallied the NA goals.  Neither team could score again as with the final going into the books as a 2-2 tie.

Early in the first period, Plum went on a power play when senior forward Patrick Moynihan was sent off for charging at the 9:10 mark.  The Mustangs were unable to score and gave NA a power play opportunity when Ben Hanus was called for cross-checking with 8:01 remaining.  The Tigers could not score on the power play, but did take the lead later in the period.  Siess got the goal with assists going to freshman forward Jake Hubert and junior defenseman Matt Ogle with the goal coming at the 4:21 mark.  Plum threatened to tie the game when senior defenseman Tyler Hagy drew a holding call at the 2:12 mark, and Ogle was sent off a minute later for roughing.  With the two-man advantage for the Mustangs, the NA defensive unit of senior defenseman Cody Burdwood and sophomore defenseman Ryan Stupy, along with consecutive saves by junior goalie Lindsay Holdcroft kept Plum off the board.  NA took a 1-0 lead into the second period despite being outshot, 11-4.

Plum still had a power play when play resumed in the second period but did not score.  With 9:52 left in the period, Waldschmidt picked up a puck in the offensive zone and sent it toward the net.  The puck took a funny bounce over the Plum goalie Shane Leonizio and went into the net giving NA a 2-0 lead.  With 9:33 left, NA junior forward Keith Hoover was called for elbowing.  This time, the Mustangs were able to convert with Cody Brenner scoring on assists from David Smith and Vinnie Sommar at the 8:32 mark.  At 7:43, Tiger senior forward Bo Schwab was called for slashing, but Plum's Corey Laboon drew a concurrent unsportsmanlike penalty.  Ogle had a chance to extend the lead with 6:15 left, but his shot hit Leonizio in the mask.  Moynihan came back with another good opportunity just a minute later, but his shot went over the Plum goal.  With 4:19 remaining, Somma tied the game on an assist from Smith.  With 3:18 left, Holdcroft had to make a good save to keep the game at 2-2.  The Tigers pressured the Plum goal in the remaining minutes but could not beat Leonizio.  With 2:50 left, Hubert's attempt was stopped by the Plum netminder, and Hagy set up junior forward Kevin Kelly after taking the rebound around the net but again Leonizio made the save.  Waldschmidt had two good scoring chances in the next minute, but the Plum goalie made both saves.  With 1:01 left in the period, Plum's Cory Sakolsky was called for interference but NA could not score.  The second period ended with the score tied at 2-2.  NA outshot the Mustangs, 10-6, in the period.

The power play carried over into the third period, but the Tigers were unable to score.  With both teams not wanting the make mistakes, scoring chances were few in the third period.  A shot by Plum's Jon Gratton at the 8:16 mark was stopped by Holdcroft to keep the game tied.  Waldschmidt got loose on a breakaway at 7:50 but Leonizio was able to make to save.  The Tigers got another power play when Hanus was called for charging with 5:03 remaining.  Moynahan had the best chance during the power play, but his hard shot was stopped.  Neither team could score in the remaining time and the game went to overtime with the teams tied at 2-2.  Plum outshot NA, 5-4, in the period.

The Tigers controlled play in the overtime period, outshooting the Mustangs, 6-1, but were unable to score.  Final shots favored NA, 24-23, with Holdcroft making 21 saves to preserve the tie.  With the tie, the NA record went to 5-2-2 on the season.  The Tigers will host first-place Pine-Richland on Friday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 5:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.  The game will also be telecast on a delayed basis on the PIHL website on Saturday.

WHEELING PARK STUNS TIGERS, 2-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers outshot Wheeling Park, 45-15, and dominated play throughout the contest, but in the end, the Patriots took home a 2-0 victory at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night.  Wheeling Park scored a power play goal in the second period and added an empty net marker late as NA was unable to beat Patriot goalie Brian Blawut.

The Tigers came out strong and stormed the Wheeling Park net.  Senior forward Brady Waldschmidt had a good chance at the 2:30 mark but missed the net.  Thirty seconds later, senior defenseman Tyler Hagy was stopped by Blawut to keep the game scoreless.  The Patriots had a chance at the 4:50 mark, but NA junior goalie Lindsay Holdcroft beat Zach Toppeto to the puck and made a sliding stop.  Midway through the period after Waldschmidt was stopped on a wraparound attempt, junior forward Kevin Kelly did tuck the puck in the WP net, but the goal was waived off because NA was in the crease.  With 5:12 remaining, Chris King broke in from the right side but shot over the goal on a Patriot power play.  With NA shorthanded, junior forward Ryan Worsena stole the puck and broke in alone on Blawut who made an outstanding save to keep the game scoreless.  With a minute left, the Tigers broke in on a 2-on-1 with junior forward Andrew Suess passing to freshman Jake Hubert who shot high and wide of the net.  With just 11 seconds left, Holdcroft made another tough save as the teams went to the first intermission scoreless.  NA outshot WP, 15-3, in the period.

In the first minute of the second period, it was NA again with pressure.  The Tigers got off three straight shots with Blawut stopping Suess and Hubert and another attempt going over the net.  Less than a minute later, the Tigers had another 2-on-1 but could not score.  At the 2:32 mark, Kelly was open in the slot, but his shot was stopped by Blawut.  A minute later, Waldschmidt broke in from the left side but shot over the goal.  Hagy was sent off for high sticking at the 4:29 mark, and the Patriots were able to convert.  Early in the power play, Holdcroft made two good saves to keep the Patriots off the board as she stopped an attempt by Christian Lewton and robbed Shayne Wilson with a sparkling glove hand save.  Seconds later, however, King was able to deflect a shot from the point by Tyler Conaway to give WP a 1-0 advantage at the 4:11 mark.  The Tigers then turned up the pressure as they tried to get the equalizer.  With 7:23 left, Waldschmidt was stopped by Blawut on an attempt from the right side, and Hubert had a good chance a minute later but shot the puck over the goal.  After Hagy was stopped on a shot from the left side, Anthony Pareso stole the puck , but the NA defense was able to get back in time to prevent a scoring attempt.  After Marshall Hone was sent off for slashing at the 5:30 mark, senior forward Patrick Moynihan came in from the right side, but again Blawut made the save.  The Tigers were unable to convert on the power play as the Patriots continued to hold the 1-0 lead.  Late in the period, Holdcroft had to make a good save on a deflection by King to keep the game at a one-goal differential.  The period ended with Wheeling Park holding a 1-0 advantage in spite of NA outshooting the Patriots, 15-6.

The third period saw the Tigers stymied time after time by Blawut and the WP defense.  The Patriots continued to ice the puck throughout the period, but NA could not take advantage of the faceoffs in the WP end.  Hubert had the first real scoring chance at the 5:10 mark when he took a pass from Suess, but Blawut again made the save.  With 8:03 left, Waldschmidt had two attempts from in front of the net, but Blawut was able to keep the puck out of the goal.  Seconds later, Hagy's rebound was covered by the Patriot netminder.  With Moynihan in the box for roughing, Waldschmidt stole the puck and broke in alone shorthanded but could not beat Blawut with 4:59 left.  With 4:20 left, Suess split the defense and was pulled down but no penalty was called as Blawut covered the shot attempt.  Senior Bo Schwab had a chance with 3:40 left but again Blawut was there.  With NA keeping the puck in the WP zone, Coach Jim Black pulled the goalie with 2:30 left.  The puck was cleared to center ice where Wilson was able to find the empty net and put the game away with 2:09 left.  The Tigers continued to pressure the WP goal and Holdcroft again was pulled from the NA net.  It was not to be for the Tigers, however, as Blawut and the WP defense held on for the win.  The Tigers outshot WP, 15-6, in the final period as they posted a 45-15 advantage in shots on goal.

It was a frustrating night for the Tigers as they dominated play but could not beat the Wheeling Park goalie.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Ryan Worsena as the NA Player of the Game.   With the loss, the NA record fell to 5-2-1 in PIHL play.  The Tigers will host Penn-Trafford next Tuesday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale.  Game time is scheduled for 7:50 pm.

TIGERS CRUSH GATEWAY, 10-1

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

(NOTE: Technical difficulties at the MSA studios forced NASN to pick up the broadcast with 9:58 remaining in the first period)

The Tigers exploded for five goals in the first and third periods on their way to an easy 10-1 victory over Gateway at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night.  Senior forward Patrick Moynihan led the way with three goals with sophomore forward Ryan Worsena adding two more.  Freshman goalie Matt Goda made his varsity debut and limited the Gators to just one power play goal.

The Tigers took control from the outset as they pressured the Gateway goal in the early going.  The pressure paid off as NA scored three goals in a 54 second span.  Junior Kevin Kelly gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead on assists from junior forward Andrew Siess and freshman forward Jake Hubert at the 4:58 mark. Siess scored just 39 seconds later with senior defenseman Cody Burdwood assisting to make it 2-0.  Worsena scored his first goal fifteen seconds later on a shot from the right side with senior forwards Donny Lewis and Brady Waldschmidt picking up the helpers.  Gateway did not register their first shot until J.J. Mignogna sent in a hard shot from the left side with 5:49 remaining in the period that Goda stopped with a glove hand save.  Thirty seconds later, Moynihan blasted a slap shot past Gator goalie Steve Krivda to give the Tigers a 4-0 advantage.  After freshman defenseman Dalton Landman was sent off, Goda made a good save on the Gator power play to keep the four-goal lead.  With 1:46 left, Worsena tallied his second goal of the game from the right circle with Lewis and Waldschmidt again recording assists.  Senior forward Brian Nimmo had a chance with 38 seconds left, but Krivda was able to make the save.  The Tigers took a commanding 5-0 advantage into the second period.  NA outshot the Gators, 14-5, in the opening stanza.

Gateway sent Anthony Pungitore in goal for the second period and he stopped all 11 NA shots.  The Tigers pressured the Gators for most of the period but could not score.  Burdwood had two good chances on slap shots at the 1:47 and 2:24 marks but Pungitore made the saves.  Lewis had a chance on a rebound on the second attempt but could not beat the Gator goalie.  At the 3:20 mark, Mignogna broke loose on a breakaway but Goda made a good save.  Siess came back with a hard shot from the right side that Pungitore stopped at the 4:05 mark.  Burdwood continued to get chances from the point with Pungitore making a good save on the NA defenseman at the 4:36 mark.  With 9:44 left, Mignogna got loose on another breakaway, but Goda made another tough save to keep the Gators off the board.  Moynihan was sent to the box for roughing with 9:12 left in the period, and the Gators were able to convert.  Andrew Plate had a good chance early in the power play, but Goda was there again to make the save.  The Gators finally broke through when Greg Donatelli deflected a shot by Mignogna from the right side into the goal as Gateway cut the NA lead to 5-1 with 8:27 left.  With 7:10 on the second period clock, Kelly had a good chance but hit the right post.  With 3:50 left, junior defenseman James Harper drove a hard slap shot that was stopped by the Gateway netminder.  Gateway had one final chance with 2:49 left, but Plate's shot hit the side of the net.  The Tigers held a 5-1 lead after two periods.  Gateway outshot NA, 13-11, in the period.

Gateway coach Greg Whitfield decided to start the period with starting goalie Steve Krivda between the pipes.  The Tigers wasted little time in increasing the lead as Moynihan lifted a rebound of a shot by junior defenseman Matt Ogle over the Gateway goalie at the 2:53 mark to make it a 6-1 NA lead.  At the 4:28 mark, Kelly hit the post again as the Tigers continued to pressure the Gateway defense.  NA had two chances on shots by Landman and Stupy around the 9:00 minute mark, but Krivda was able to keep the puck out of the net.  With 8:31 left, Waldschmidt was able to keep the puck in the Gator end with a hard check just inside the blue line.  The puck slid to the right corner to Lewis who found Waldschmidt alone in front of the net where the Tiger senior was able to beat Krivda to make it 7-1.  Just 36 seconds later, Moynihan blasted a hard shot into the upper right hand corner of the net from the right circle to increase the margin to 8-1.  Pungitore then replaced Krivda in the Gateway goal.  The Tigers were not finished as Ogle scored on a hard slap shot from the left point with Kelly picking up the assist with 7:09 left as NA took a 9-1 lead.  With the clock running on the mercy rule, Gateway picked up an interference penalty on Clint Creighton.  The Tiger power play was successful with Hubert deflecting in a shot by Stupy with 2:58 left to make it a 10-1 NA lead.  Neither team was able to score in the remaining time as the Tigers completed the 10-1 rout.

The Tiger offense finally got untracked after a slow start with the ten-goal outburst.  Seven different NA players scored goals with eleven players picking up points in the game.  For his effort early in the game that resulted in the Tigers taking control of the contest, the North Allegheny Sports Network named junior Andrew Siess as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers improved their PIHL record to 5-1-1 on the season.  NA will travel to Jamestown, NY, on Friday to play in the prestigious Natinal Invitational Scholastic Showcase Tournament.  The Tigers will play Fenwick (IL) in the first game with game time set for 4:45 on Friday afternoon.

TIGERS STOP STATE COLLEGE, 6-2

Photo Gallery

The Tigers made the long trip to State College on Tuesday night and came home with a 6-2 victory over the Little Lions.  Six different Tigers scored with senior forward Thomas Gillespie picking up a goal and an assist with junior forward Kevin Kelly adding a pair of assists.

The Little Lions tried to get an early lead when Mark Sapia was stopped by NA junior goalie Lindsay Holdcroft at the 3:00 minute mark.  A minute later, Ben Wheeler tried to stuff the puck under the pads of Holdcroft, but the NA netminder made the save again.  It was NA that took the early lead, however, when senior defenseman Tyler Hagy picked off an errant SC pass and skated in to score an unassisted goal at the 4:35 mark of the period.  With NA ahead, 1-0, the Tigers continued to pressure SC goalie Joe Abruzzo with an attempt by senior forward Brady Waldschmidt just missing the net with a shot from the point with 8:05 left in the period.  Less than a minute later, Holdcroft came up big with a save on a Little Lion 2-on-1.  After Holdcroft made another pair of saves, the Tigers counter-attacked on passes from senior forward Patrick Moynihan to junior defenseman Tyler Wright who set up Hagy for a chance that was deflected out of play.  State College's Darin Spicer had another opportunity with 4:13 left, but Holdcroft was there again with the stop.  After an icing call against NA, the Little Lions had another scoring chance, but senior defenseman Cody Burdwood made the stop and cleared the puck.  With 2:00 left in the period, SC's Cam Beaury was sent off for tripping giving the Tigers the first power play of the game.  NA made the Lions pay with a power play goal by junior defenseman Ryan Stupy with just 30 seconds remaining with assists going to Waldschmidt and senior forward Donny Lewis.  The period ended with NA holding a 2-0 advantage.  Shots in the period favored State College, 10-6.

The Tigers almost increased the lead to 3-0 just 38 seconds into the second period when Hagy just missed connecting with junior forward Jordan Beck.  Waldschmidt had another good opportunity off a face-off in the State College end, but his shot went wide.  At the 3:23 mark, junior forward Andrew Siess scored on an assist from Kelly to extend the margin to 3-0.  Just seven seconds later, Stupy was called for interference giving the Little Lions their first power play.  After Holdcroft made a nice kick save to keep the Lions off the board, SC's Nick Michael was able to lift a shot through a screen to put the Lions on the board.  Josh Pettengill got the assist as State College cut the NA lead to 3-1 with 10:12 still remaining in the period.  The Tiger defense turned up the physical pressure with hard checks delivered by junior defenseman Matt Ogle, Wright and Beck.  Freshman defenseman Dalton Landman got into the act with several good plays to keep the puck in the State College zone.  With 8:56 left, senior forward Bo Schwab was called for hooking.  The NA defense held off the Lions for the first minute and a half but were called for too many men with 7:08 left giving SC a two-man advantage.  Once again, the Tiger defense came up big, however, killing off the penalties to preserve the 3-1 lead.  With 3:58 remaining, Gillespie scored to push the lead to 4-1 with assists to senior forward Brian Nimmo and Beck.  With 1:13 left, Abruzzo stopped Moynihan with a good gloved hand save with Hagy there for a possible rebound.  The second period ended with the Tigers holding a 4-1 lead.  Shots in the period were 12-11 in favor of NA.

Early in the third period, Holdcroft had to make a good save just 32 seconds into the stanza.  At the 3:29 mark, Kelly set up freshman Jake Hubert with a nice drop pass, but the SC goalie was able to make the save.  The Tigers had two additional opportunities over the next several minutes, but Abruzzo was able to stop both Burdwood and Schwab.  With 8:09 left, Ogle was sent off for slashing giving SC another power play.  After the Tigers once again killed off the penalty, sophomore forward Ryan Worsena shot just over the SC net with 5:47 remaining.  With 5:02 left, Moynihan scored on a diving shot off a pass from Gillespie as the Tigers increased the lead to 5-1.  With 4:54 left, junior defenseman James Harper was called for tripping giving the Lions their fifth power play of the game.  This time, the Lions converted with Ryan Pate scoring on assists from Pettengill and Abe Edson as SC cut the lead to 5-2.  The goal energized the Lions who had successive chances with Holdcroft making a save and a second shot hitting the post.  With 39 seconds left, Kelly was stopped. Twenty seconds later, Hubert put the finishing touch on a 6-2 Tiger victory on assists from Kelly and Siess.  In the third period, NA outshot SC, 8-5, with the final shot tally ending at 26 each.

Holdcroft was able to stop 24 of 26 shots to earn the victory for the Tigers.  With the win, the NA record in PIHL play improved to 4-1-1.  The Tigers will host Gateway on Tuesday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:15 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 6:30 pm.

VICTORY OVER TIGERS

A goal with 35 seconds remaining by Mike Zdunski proved to be the game winner as McDowell edged the Tigers, 3-2, at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night.  Seniors Thomas Gillespie and Brady Waldschmidt scored the NA goals but the Trojans were able to break the 2-2 tie late for the victory.

Both teams started quickly with scoring chances early.  McDowell's Steven Martin got off a good shot from the right side just 30 seconds into the game, but NA junior goalie Lindsay Holdcroft made the save.  Less than a minute later, senior forward Donny Lewis sent a shot in from a tough angle on the right side, and Trojan goalie Andrew Ericson was there to stop the attempt.  The Tigers had another chance at the 1:18 mark when junior forward Jordan Beck sent a pass in front of the goal, but senior forward Tyler Hagy's shot just went wide to the left of the McDowell goal.  Midway through the period, Ericson stopped freshman defenseman Dalton Landman's hard shot from the point.  Waldschmidt had another chance from in front of the net that the McDowell netminder kicked away.  Zdunski intercepted a clearing pass and broke in from the left side with 7:41 remaining, but Holdcroft stopped his attempt.  For the next several minutes, McDowell kept the puck in the NA zone, but the Tiger defense stopped any additional scoring chances.  Junior forward Andrew Siess had a chance with 3:20 left but Ericson made the save.  With 2:52 remaining in the period, Lewis shot wide of the McDowell net.  The Trojans' Shane Reese came back with a good attempt with just 1:28 remaining but Holdcroft was there again to make the stop.  The Tigers had one last opportunity when Lewis set up Waldschmidt in front of the goal, but the Tiger captain could not get off a good shot with 40 seconds left.  The period ended with the game scoreless.

Early in the second period, senior forward Patrick Moynihan took the puck in his own end and skated all the way to the McDowell goal, but Ericson was able to make a good save.  At the 1:33 mark, junior defenseman Tyler Wright was sent off for tripping giving the Trojans their first power play of the game.  After the NA defense blocked two McDowell shots, Holdcroft came up big on a shot from the point by Jeff Clark and then stopped Reese's attempt on the rebound as the Tigers killed off the penalty.  The Tigers then took the lead at the 4:23 mark when Gillespie was able to send a rebound into the goal after senior Bo Schwab broke in from the left side and got off the initial shot.  The physical play picked up at this point, and Lewis was called for hooking at the 5:57 mark.  Early in the power play, Holdcroft made a good save on another strong shot from the point by Clark.  Moynihan then had a good chance shorthanded but Ericson was able to make the save.  The Trojans finally broke through when a shot by Brik Zivkovich from the left point deflected off an NA player into the net to tie the game with 7:28 remaining in the period.  The Tigers came back to almost take the lead when Lewis found sophomore forward Ryan Worsena open in front of the net, but his shot went wide.  McDowell's Brian Barney broke free with 5:44 left, but the NA defense was able to stop his attempt from behind.  Alex Margraf stole the puck and had a breakaway less than a minute later, but Holdcroft made a blocker save to keep the game tied.  The Tigers took another penalty with 4:25 left when Stupy was sent to the box.  The Trojans made NA pay when Reese found Martin open in front of the Tiger goal, and the McDowell forward was able to convert to give his team a 2-1 lead with 3:03 left in the period.  With just 35 seconds left, Jared Gillespie was called for cross-checking giving NA a power play.  The Tigers did not score in the remaining time as McDowell took a 2-1 lead into the final stanza.

With the Tigers on the power play as the third period began, it was Margraf again with the best chance on a shorthanded attempt that Holdcroft had to stop just 54 seconds into the period.  The Tigers were unable to get off a shot during the power play.  Gillespie was called for boarding at the 3:14 mark giving NA another power play.  For the second consecutive man advantage, McDowell was able to keep the Tigers bottled up in their own end without any shots at the McDowell net.  The Tigers finally put together some offense and tied the game when Waldschmidt blasted in a shot from just inside the left circle with 6:17 remaining with Lewis and Stupy picking up the assists as NA made it a 2-2 game.  Senior defenseman Matt Ogle was called for cross checking with 5:48 left, and Hagy was sent off for holding just 18 seconds later.  With the Trojans holding a 5-on-3 advantage, the NA defense and Holdcroft came up big as they killed off the penalties.  The NA netminder made two big saves on a shot by Clark and a rebound attempt to keep the game tied at 2-2.  With 1:51 remaining, the Trojans' Reese sent a shot just over the NA goal.  Thirty seconds later, Holdcroft made a blocker save on Zivkovich who sent a hard shot in from the left side.  The Tigers countered with Lewis dropping a pass off to Waldschmidt in front of the Trojan net, but the Tiger captain was able to just get a stick on it as the attempt went wide with 50 seconds left.  With the Tigers holding the puck in the McDowell end, Zdunski blocked a shot from the left point and gathered in the long rebound that bounced toward the NA goal.  The McDowell forward raced in all alone from the right side and was able to beat Holdcroft to give the Trojans a 3-2 lead with 35 seconds left in the game.  NA Coach Jim Black pulled his goalie in the last seconds of the contest, but the McDowell defense held off any Tiger scoring attempts as the Erie team was able to take home a 3-2 victory.

It was a tough loss for the Tigers in a physical contest over the last two periods.  Penalties hurt NA as McDowell converted on a pair of power plays in the second period to put them in a position to win the game.  For his efforts in the offensive end, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Donny Lewis as the Player of the Game.

With the loss, the NA record fell to 3-1-1 while McDowell improved to 3-3-0 in Section 2 play.  The Tigers will be in action again next Tuesday when they travel to State College.  Game time at Penn State is scheduled for 6:45 pm.

FOX CHAPEL RALLIES TO TIE TIGERS, 3-3

Photo Gallery

The Tigers saw leads of 2-0 and 3-1 slip away in the third period as Fox Chapel rallied to tie NA, 3-3, at the Valley Sports Complex on Monday night.  Tiger goals were scored by junior defenseman Matt Ogle, sophomore forward Ryan Worsena, and senior forward Brian Nimmo.

In the first period, it appeared that NA had taken an early 1-0 lead just 1:25 into the contest, but the goal was waived off due to a kicking motion.  Senior forward Brady Waldschmidt was stopped on a wrap around attempt minutes later as FC goalie Zach Eisenfeld made the save.  With 5:20 remaining, Ogle gave NA the lead on a shot from the point with assists from senior forward Patrick Moynihan and senior defenseman Tyler Hagy.  With just 12 seconds left, junior forward Kevin Kelly was sent off for cross checking.  The first period ended with the Tigers holding a 1-0 advantage.  NA led in shots, 6-3.

With the Tigers shorthanded at the beginning of the second period, it was NA's senior forward Donny Lewis who had the first chance just five seconds into the stanza with Eisenfeld making the save.  .  Tiger junior goalie Lindsay Holdcroft and the NA defense held off the Foxes on their initial power play with Holdcroft making a good save at the 1:03 mark.  The Tigers came back with several scoring attempts but shots by Waldschmidt and sophomore defenseman Ryan Stupy were stopped by the FC goalie.  Lewis tried to send senior forward Thomas Gillespie in on a breakaway at the 5:08 mark, but the pass was just wide of Gillespie's stick.  The Tigers continued to pressure the Fox Chapel goal with chances by senior defenseman Cody Burdwood and Hagy stopped by Eisenfeld.  With 8:35 remaining in the period, the Foxes drew a penalty for charging giving NA their first power play.  The Tigers converted with Worsena scoring on an assist from Moynihan as the NA lead went to 2-0 with 7:03 left.  The Foxes' Aris Panklas was sent off with 4:50 remaining, but the Tigers were unable to score on the power play.  With 2:10 left, NA had a great chance on a centering pass from Kelly to Burdwood that just missed connecting.  With 1:25 left, Charles Williams of Fox Chapel drew a slashing penalty giving NA their third power play of the period.  Senior forward Bo Schwab was able to tip in a shot for an apparent goal, but it was ruled off a high stick and the goal was disallowed.  It was the second NA goal of the game to be waived off.  Ogle was called for an interference penalty with 29 seconds left, and Burdwood for holding eight seconds later to give the Foxes a man advantage.  The Foxes got off one last attempt with 13 seconds left, but Holdcroft made the save.  The teams went to the second intermission with NA holding a 2-0 lead.  NA posted 12 shots in the period to just five for the Foxes.

Fox Chapel started the third period on a power play with an early shot stopped by the NA defense.  The Foxes gained another man advantage for several seconds, but the Tiger defense was able to keep FC off the board.  At the 2:18 mark, Williams was called again for slashing.  It was the fourth NA power play of the game.  This time, however, it was Fox Chapel that was able to score with Jake Friedland breaking in to pick up a short handed goal that cut the margin to 2-1 with 12:19 remaining.  The Tigers were able to answer on the power play with Nimmo scoring on a one-timer from in front of the net on a pass from Schwab from behind the net as the NA lead went to 3-1.  After Waldschmidt was sent off for tripping with 10:31 left in the period, Holdcroft had to make two good saves to preserve the two-goal advantage.  With the Foxes coming on, NA Coach Jim Black called a time out.  With 1:35 left, Williams was able to find the upper right hand corner of the net to cut the NA lead to 3-2.  The Foxes then took a time out that paid off in the tying goal with just 41 seconds remaining.  The Foxes' Michael Tommarello scored from the right side of the Tiger net to knot the game at 3-3.  Neither team could score in the remainder of regulation time as the game went to overtime.  Fox Chapel outshot NA, 12-2, in the third period.

Neither team had a good scoring threat in the overtime period, although Eisenfeld had to cover a puck in the crease at the 3:23 mark.  The final shot tally showed NA with 21 and Fox Chapel with 20 for the game.

The NA record fell to 3-0-1 with the tie.  The Tigers will be at home again on Tuesday when they host the McDowell Trojans in a section contest.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:15 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
