A pair of late goals by junior attack Carly Luitgaarden broke a 7-7 tie and gave the Lady Tigers a 9-8 victory over Fox Chapel at Newman Stadium on Monday night.  Senior attack Talia Waskowicz scored four goals to pace an NA attack that built an early  7-2 lead.

The Lady Tigers got on the board quickly when Waskowicz scored just 24 seconds into the contest to give NA a 1-0 lead.  Pegeen Stone came back for the Foxes to tie the game a minute later.  Waskowicz drove home her second of the game at the 3:32 mark to make it a 2-1 NA lead.  Sophomore Carley Thieret scored two minutes later to extend the lead to 3-1.  After Dana Rothstein answered for Fox Chapel, Luitgaarden tallied her first of the game at the 9:53 mark to make it a 4-2 game.  Senior Cara Dumont followed with another goal as the NA lead went to 5-2.  Waskowicz completed a four-goal first half with a pair of goals at the 14:36 and 18:36 marks as the Lady Tigers opened a 7-2 advantage.  Fox Chapel came back with goals by Waldman and Rothstein to cut the NA lead to 7-4 at the intermission.

Early in the second half, it was all Fox Chapel as the Foxes rallied behind goals by Cisirelli, Reineman and Waldman to tie the game at 7-7.  Midway through the half, however, Luitgaarden scored off a pass from freshman Christine Palmeri to regain the lead at 8-7 at the 16:01 mark.  Three minutes later, Luitgaarden scored again to make it a 9-7 game.  Rothstein's third goal of the game cut the margin to 9-8, but the NA defense and ball control on the offensive end managed to maintain the lead and secure the victory

The win improved the NA section record to 4-4, the overall mark to 8-4 on the season.  For her efforts, including the game winning goal, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Carly Luitgaarden as the Player of the Game.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Seneca Valley tomorrow night to meet the Raiders in a key 7:30 pm section contest.

LADY TIGERS ROLL OVER ROYALS, 15-3

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers opened the 2010 season with an impressive 15-3 victory over neighborhood rival Vincentian at Newman Stadium on Friday night.  Senior midfielders Talia Waskowicz and Brenna Curti score four goals each to pace NA with senior attack Cara Dumont adding three tallies for the winning Lady Tigers.

It took only 2:50 for NA to take the lead in the contest as Dumont scored with a high shot from the right side over the head of Royal goalie Colleen Rathz.  Less than two minutes later, junior attack Carly Luitgaarden scored from ten yards out to make it 2-0.  At the 6:25 mark, Dumont converted a free position attempt as the NA lead went to 3-0.  Twenty-four seconds later, junior attack Jessica Partridge finished after a long run to extend the Tiger lead to 4-0.  Curti got her first goal off another free position attempt with 12:28 remaining in the half.   Waskowicz scored the next four goals to increase the NA advantage to 9-0.   After scoring from in front of the goal, the Lady Tiger senior took a pass from Luitgaarden just four yards away and found the net to give NA a 7-0 lead.  After a Vincentian time out, Patridge found Waskowicz open again in the middle as she scored her third of the game.  Waskowicz finished the four-goal streak with a cut across the middle from left to right with 8:43 remaining.  Senior midfielder Kellie Roach needed just 12 seconds to add another NA tally as the score soared to 10-0.  Curti finished the Tiger scoring from right in front of the net with 3:03 on the first half clock.  Neither team scored in the remaining time as NA took a commanding 11-0 lead to the intermission.

The Lady Tigers picked up right where they left off as the second half began.  Curti scored her third goal of the game after a long run to increase the margin to 12-0 just 2:27 into the half.  Dumont circled out from behind the goal to add her third of the game and make it 13-0 at the 4:22 mark.  The Royals finally got on the board with 17:24 remaining in the game when Katie Stack was able to score from right in front of the net.  Vincentian's Kelly Dickson was able to add a second tally after a nice reverse move as the Royals cut the margin to 13-2.  With 13:55 left, Curti took advantage of another free position attempt to score her fourth of the game and give NA a 14-2 lead.  With 5:54 left, Katie Bentsen sent in a bounce shot for the Royals' third goal of the game.  Luitgaarden completed the scoring after cutting across the middle and lofting a high shot into the net with 4:35 remaining.  Neither team was able to add to the total down the stretch as the Lady Tigers completed the 15-3 victory.

It was a good team effort by the Lady Tigers both offensively and defensively.  For her offensive efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Brenna Curti as the Player of the Game.   Defensively, NA took advantage of a pressing defense and good work in goal by junior Nia Parillo to keep the Royals off balance throughout the game.

With the win, NA started the season with a 1-0 record.  The Lady Tigers will continue non-section play on Monday night when they host Knoch.  Game time at Newman Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

WPIAL GIRLS' LACROSSE - 2010

The Lady Tigers will be playing again in the WPIAL along with 29 other teams.  A WPIAL section plaque will be awarded to each of the section winners.  Those winners will be the teams who have the best record against all schools in their section.  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and each will be declared co-champions and will receive a section winner's plaque.  All ties in section record will be broken by head-to-head competition.  The WPIAL girls’ lacrosse section play will begin on March 30, 2010, and must be completed according to the schedule.

The top four teams in each section will enter the WPIAL tournament.  Teams that qualify for the WPIAL tournament may not play games after May 18, 2010 but may scrimmage any team that has qualified for, and remains alive in the WPIAL tournament.  All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best section won/lost record.  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and ALL of the tied teams will be declared section champions, will receive a section winner's plaques, and will be entered into the WPIAL tournament.  The top 2 teams from each section will play at home in the first round of the playoffs.

In the event of a multiple team (two or more teams) tie for a playoff position head-to-head competition will bee the first determinant.  If head-to-head does not break the tie, the following tie-breaking system will be used.  If three or more teams are tied for third place and the tie breaking system identifies one team as the third place team, the remaining teams will then be tied for fourth place and the process begins all over with head-to-head competition being the first determinant for establishing the fourth place team.  If a tie cannot be broken all tied teams will enter the playoffs.

TIE-BREAKING SYSTEM

a.  Section records of the tied teams will be compiled.
b.  The team(s) with the best numerical head-to-head section record among the tied teams will be the qualifier.
c.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter post-season play.

Teams that qualify for the tournament should be aware that they may be placed in a preliminary round and may be assigned to play beginning on Thursday, May 20, 2010.  Section winners and second place finishers will be awarded home games in the first round with the third and fourth place teams playing away.  In the event of a tie for first and/or second place the WPIAL will determine the home site assignment based on availability and suitability.

Teams should be aware that PIAA tournament entry is reserved for Division I teams.  The WPIAL, however, will crown a Division I and II Champion.  PIAA bracket placement will be determined on a "Follow the Winner" basis.
