Photo Courtesy of Liz Bollens GIL CAPTURES SILVER, SETS SCHOOL RECORD Junior Ryan Gil set a school record in the 3200 in the PIAA Class AAA Individual Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University on Saturday. Gil ran a time of 9:03.87 eclipsing the former mark of 9:08 set 36 years ago by NA Hall of Famer Gary Hofstetter. Gil finished in second place behind Unionville's Matt Fischer.
"It was an exciting weekend in Shippensburg for the track athletes", according to Coach Liz Bollens. The girls' 4x800 relay finished in fourth place but set a new NA record in the process. In addition, the quartet of sophomore Lizzie Appleton, junior Eleni Mermigas, freshman Alex Gambill, and junior Halie Carter set an all time WPIAL best mark of 9:12.23 in the race. Senior Rachel Kost ran a 47.55 in the 300 hurdles but did not qualify for the finals. Junior Taylor Yarshen posted a 10'6" in the pole vault and tied for ninth place. The boys' 4x800 relay team ran an 8:18.40 but did not qualify for the final. Click here for a video of an interview with Ryan Gil CONGRATULATIONS TO RYAN AND THE GIRLS' 4x800 RELAY TEAM!!!!! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER ATHLETES ADVANCE TO PIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS A number of NA athletes were able to qualify for the PIAA Championships next week at Shippensburg. On Thursday in the WPIAL Class AAA Individual Championships, the girls 4x800 relay team took first setting both a WPIAL and NA school record. The team of sophomore Lizzie Appleton, junior Halie Carter, freshman Alex Gambill and sophomore Eleni Memigas won in a time of 9:19.25 to set the new marks. Junior Taylor Yarshen took second in the pole vault with a height of 11'3" that tied the NA school record. Senior Rachel Cost was fourth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 46.48 and Carter ran the 400 in a time of 58.51 to qualify For the boys, junior Ryan Gil was second in the 3200 meter run in 9:10.62 to advance while the boys' 4x800 relay team was fifth but met the PIAA qualifying standard with a time of 8:00.74. Running the relay were sophomore Vince Tonzo, senior Luke Badaczewski, senior Mike Smolinski, and junior Sean Madigan. The PIAA Championships will be held at Shippensburg next Friday and Saturday. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * BUTLER TAKES WPIAL GIRLS' TEAM TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP Despite losing to NA during the regular season, the Butler Golden Tornado was able to defeat the Tigers, along with Hempfield and Norwin, to capture the WPIAL Class AAA Team Track Championship at Baldwin on Thursday. Butler outscored the Lady Tigers, 81-69, Hempfield, 82-67, and Norwin, 85-64, to claim the title. The WPIAL Individual Championships will be held on Thursday at Baldwin High School. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 4x800 RELAY TEAM TAKES GOLD AT BALDWIN INVITATIONAL The girls' 4x800 relay team won gold at the Baldwin Invitational on Friday and set a meet record in the race. Juniors Eleni Mermigas and Halie Carter along with sophomore Lizzie Appleton and freshman Alex Gambill raced home in a time of 9:24.53 to set a new standard at the meet. Senior Rachel Kost took a second place and silver medal in the 300 meter hurdles while senior Anica Housen placed third in the discus. For the boys, senior Jason Turner was second in the discus while junior Ryan Gil took third in the special McKinney Mile run. Tiger athletes will compete in the WPIAL Class AAA Individual Qualifications at Butler on Tuesday. On Thursday, the Lady Tigers will go for gold in the WPIAL Class AAA Team Championships at West Mifflin with meet time set for 2:00 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
LADY TIGERS ADVANCE TO WPIAL TEAM The Lady Tigers defeated Chartiers Valley, 106-44, Hampton, 102-5-27.5, and Hopewell, 92-57 to advance to the WPIAL Class AAA Team Championship final next week at West Mifflin. The boys fell just short with victories over Hampton, 121-29, Uniontown, 110-40, and West Allegheny, 107-42, before losing to Canon-McMillan, 82-68. The Tiger teams will compete in the Baldwin Invitational tomorrow at Baldwin High School. Action is scheduled to get under way at 12:00 noon.

LADY TIGERS TOP BUTLER FOR SECTION TITLE; BOYS SETTLE The Lady Tigers defeated Butler, 84-66, to win the Section 3 title as they finished with a section record of 6-0. The boys' team dropped a tough 77-73 decision to the Tornado to finish in a three-way tie for the section championship along with Butler and Seneca Valley. Leading the Lady Tigers was junior Halie Carter with wins in both the 200 and 400 and a second place finish in the 100. Freshman Alex Gambill captured the 1600 and took second in the 3200. Also winning on the track were senior Rachel Kost in the 300 hurdles, junior Eleni Mermigas in the 800, junior Halley Bayer in the 3200, and freshman Cassie Foulk in the 100 hurdles. The 4x800 relay team also was victorious over the Tornado. In the field, junior Taylor Yarshen won the long jump and was second in the pole vault. Senior Anica Housen was first in the discus and third in the shot put while junior Maddie Rohar captured first in the pole vault. Earning important second place points were sophomore Calene Dougherty with a second in the 400 and sophomore Leah Langhans with a second in the 800. Placing third were freshman Kalsey Kurtanich in the 100 hurdles and sophomore Lizzie Appleton in the 1600. In the field, senior Kara Stiger took second in the high jump with junior Katie Mitchell placing second in the javelin. Junior Zoe Calabrese was third in the triple jump, junior Kayla Starta third in the pole vault, and junior Brenna Burry third in the javelin. Freshman Kyle Shivetts pace the boys with wins in both the 100 and 200 along with a third in the long jump. Junior Ryan Gil won the 1600 and was third in the 3200 with junior Byrum Louco taking first in the 300 hurdles and third in the 110 high hurdles. Junior Joe Pane won the grueling 3200 run with the Tiger 4x800 relay team also defeating the Tornado. In the field, senior David Humphrey won both the long and triple jumps. Senior Jason Turner captured first in the discus while senior Daniel Humphrey was first in the javelin. On the track, senior Evan Shepard added second place points in the 100 with junior Nick Minich taking second in the 3200 and sophomore Alex McIlvried coming in second in the 400. Senior Jay Cadwallader in the 1600 and junior Sean Madigan in the 800 both were third in their events. In the field, junior Peter Howard was second in the javelin while senior Cody Brown took third in the shot put. The Lady Tigers finished in second place behind host and winner Hempfield in the 19th Annual Lady Spartan Invitational on Saturday at Hempfield Stadium. NA scored 96 points to Hempfield's winning total of 142.5. NA was led by first place finishes by senior Rachel Kost in the 300 hurdles, junior Taylor Yarshen in the long jump and the 3200 relay team of junior Halie Carter, sophomore Lizzie Appleton, junior Eleni Mermigas, and freshman Alex Gambill. NA will host Butler on Tuesday afternoon with the section title on the line. Meet time is scheduled for 3:30 pm at Newman Stadium.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS TAKE TITLE IN LATROBE INVITATIONAL
The Tigers won the championship of the Eighth Wildcat Invitational at Greater Latrobe Memorial Stadium on Friday. NA scored 101 points to second place Hempfield's 94 with Gateway third and Wheeling Park fourth. Individual winners for the Tigers included junior Ryan Gil in the 1600, senior David Humphrey in the triple jump, senior Jason Turner in the discus, and senior Daniel Humphrey in the javelin. The 3200 meter relay team of sophomore Vince Tonzo, junior Sean Madigan, senior Luke Badaczewski and Gil won their race to help the Tigers to the title. In a separate meet, senior Jake Sunday set a school record in the javelin throw. Participating in the prestigious Penn Relays, Sunday threw for 209 feet, 8 inches. The throw was more than 27 feet longer than his championship effort in the WPIAL finals last year. It also beat the NA school record by 14 feet.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * SHALER, PINE-RICHLAND FALL TO TIGER TEAMS Meet Results Both Shaler and Pine-Richland were victims of the Tigers teams in section meets at Pine-Richland on Tuesday afternoon. The boys rolled over the Rams, 125-25, and downed the Titans, 110-40. The Lady Tigers also had little trouble in defeating Pine-Richland, 130-20, and Shaler, 99-51. For the boys, junior Byrum Louco led the way with victories in the 300 hurdles against both teams while taking first in the 300 and second in the 110 against the Rams. Freshman Kyle Shivetts led in the sprints with wins in the 200 against both teams and a victory in the 100 against P-R. Winning their races against both opponents were senior Jay Cadwallader in the 3200, junior Ryan Gil in the 1600, junior Sean Madigan in the 800, and sophomore Alex McIlvried in the 400. In the field, senior David Humphrey was victorious against both teams in both the triple and long jumps. Also winning against both the Titans and Rams were senior Jason Turner in the discus, senior Jake Sunday in the javelin, and senior Ryan Donahue in the pole vault. Sophomore Peter Thistle took first against Shaler and second against P-R. Merry took second in the 400 against the Rams. Picking up second place points in both meets were senior Luke Badaczewski in the 800, sophomore Vince Tonzo in the 1600 (along with a second in the 200 against P-R), junior Ryan Stein in the 300 (second against Shaler in the 110), and junior Joe Pane in the 3200. In the field, senior Daniel Humphrey was second in the javelin in both meets, sophomore Vinny Congedo in the long jump, and sophomore Drew Miller in the triple jump with sophomore Tom Zagorski second in the high jump against the Rams and junior Michael Tsang second in the high jump against Shaler. Junior Halie Carter led the Lady Tigers with wins in the 100, 200 and 400 races against both opponents. Senior Rachel Kost took the 300 hurdles against both Shaler and Pine-Richland, junior Eleni Mermigas the 800, freshman Alex Gambill the 1600, freshman Cassie Foulk the the 100 hurdles. Junior Halley Bayer took first against the Rams and second against Shaler. In the field, senior Anica Houser took firsts in the shot and discus against both Shaler and P-R while junior Taylor Yarshen was a double winner twice in the long jump and pole vault. Senior Kara Stiger won the high jump against P-R and was second against Shaler, junior Zoe Calabrese took the triple jump against the Rams and second against the Titans, while junior Katie Mitchell won the javelin against P-R and was second against SA. Earning second place points for the Lady Tigers were Stiger in the 100, Kost in the 200, and junior Ali Greco in the 3200.. In the field, junior Morgan Cavanaugh was second in the discus against Shaler while junior Maddie Rohar took second in the pole vault against both teams. With the wins, the Tiger teams improved to 5-0 in section meets. The NA teams will face Butler on Tuesday night with the section titles on the line. Meet time at Newman Stadium is set for 3:30 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER TEAMS STAY UNBEATEN WITH WINS AT FOX CHAPEL Both Tiger teams were victorious in section meets at Fox Chapel on Monday afternoon. The boys downed the Foxes by a 91-59 score while the Lady Tigers crushed the Foxes, 133-17. Senior Jay Cadwallader led NA with a victory in the 1600 with junior Byrum Louco taking the 300 hurdles, junior Joe Pane the 3200, and sophomore Alex McIlvried the 400. In addition the 4x800 relay team was victorious in their race. Taking second place points for the Tigers were senior Evan Shepard in the 100, junior Ryan Stein in both hurdles races, and freshman Kyle Shivetts in the 200. In the field, the Tigers captured first in five events. Senior Jacob Sunday won the javelin, senior Jason Turner the discus, senior Cody Brown the shot put, and senior David Humphrey the triple jump. Junior Evan Holler took first in the pole vault. Second place points were won by junior Peter Howard in the javelin, junior Mike Will in the pole vault, sophomore Thomas Zagorski in the high jump, sophomore Drew Miller in the triple jump, sophomore Peter Thistle in the shot put, and freshman Kyle Shivetts in the long jump. For the Lady Tigers junior Halie Carter was a double winner taking both the 400 and 800. Senior Rachel Kost also won two events with first place finishes in both the 300 hurdles and 200. Also capturing first place finishes were junior Halley Bayer in the 3200, freshman Cassie Foulk in the 100 hurdles, and freshman Alex Gambill in the 1600. All three NA relay teams were victorious. In the field, senior Kara Stiger was first in the high jump, junior Taylor Yarshen in the long jump, junior Morgan Cavanaugh won the shot put, junior Kim Wolfe the discus, junior Katie Mitchell the javelin, sophomore Karissa Manko the triple jump, and junior Maddi Rohar the pole vault. Finishing in second were senior Kara Stiger in the 100, junior Mary Krepp in the 100 hurdles, junior Ali Greco in the 1600, and junior Eleni Mermigas in the 800. Also taking second place points on the track were sophomore Calene Dougherty in the 400 and sophomore Sophie Seel in the 300 hurdles. With the wins, both teams improved their section records to 3-0 on the season. TIGER TEAMS OPEN SECTION WITH WINS OVER Both Tiger teams were victorious in the section opener at Newman Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The boys downed rival North Hills, 108.7-41.3, and Seneca Valley, 80-70. The Lady Tigers took a 97-53 victory over the Indians along with an 85-65 win over the Raiders. Junior Halie Carter led the way against North Hills with wins in both the 100 and 200. Senior Rachel Kost won the 300 hurdles while junior Eleni Mermigas captured the 800. All three NA relay teams won their races against NH. In the field, junior Zoe Calabrese was a double winner taking both the triple and long jumps. Junior Katie Mitchell won the javelin, senior Anica Housen the shot put, senior Kara Stiger the high jump and junior Taylor Yarshen the pole vault. In the scoring against Seneca Valley, Carter was first in the 100, 200 and 400. Mermigas also won the 800 while freshman Gabrielle Borza took the 3200. NA also won the three relay races against SV. In the field, Housen was first in the shot, Stiger in the high jump, and Yarshen in the pole valut. For the boys against North Hills, senior Evan Shepard took first in both the 100 and 200. Junior Byrum Louco captured first place points in the 300 hurdles while junior Sean Madigan won the 800. All three relay teams defeated the Indians. In the field, senior Jacob Sunday won the javelin, senior Jason Turner the discus, senior Cody Brown the shot, and senior Ryan Donahue the pole vault. In the point totals against Seneca Valley, Louco took first in both hurdles races, junior Ryan Gil won both the 1600 and 3200, and Madigan took first in the 800. The 4x800 and 4x100 relay teams defeated the Raiders. In the field, Sunday was first in the javelin, Turner in the discus, Brown in the shut, and sophomore Drew Miller in the triple jump. The Tiger teams will travel to Fox Chapel on Monday afternoon for a 3:30 pm section meet against the Foxes. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS STOP CATHEDRAL PREP, VILLA MARIA IN OPENER The Tiger teams defeated Erie Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria in the season opener at Newman Stadium. The boys downed the Ramblers, 87-63, while the Lady Tigers had an easy time with Villa Maria by a 136-13 score. In the boys' meet, Junior Ryan Gil won the 1600, junior Joe Pane captured the 3200, junior Sean Madigan the 800, and the 4x800 relay team was victorious on the track. In the field, senior Jacob Sunday won the javelin while senior Jason Turner took the shot put. The high jump was won by sophomore Thomas Zagorski, the triple jump by freshman Greg Baum, and the pole vault by senior Ryan Donahue. * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

meet at Newman Stadium. The scheduled starting time is set for
4:30 pm * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WPIAL TRACK AND FIELD - 2010 The Tiger teams will compete again in the WPIAL in Class AAA with the boys competing against 55 teams and the girls against 53 teams. The top two teams from each AAA section will enter WPIAL team championship play. The AAA teams assigned to a AA section MUST WIN THE SECTION to qualify for the AAA team championships .In the event of a tie for a place in the team tournament head to head competition will be the determining factor regarding tournament entry. Multiple ties will be broken in the following manner:
a. Section records of the tied teams will be compiled. All WPIAL scheduled section dual meets must be completed by April 30, 2010. The first round of the team track tournament play will be conducted by the designated host teams without benefit of track steering committee or financing by the League. All multiple team meets scheduled in regular or post-season play will be scored as individual meets (e.g. each team competes against all the others). A tiebreaker system for dual meet regular season and dual meet post season meets has bee established. Ties are broken by the following:
a. Greater number of first place winners. When 3 teams are scheduled in regular or post-season play, each will be scored as an individual dual meet. If each team earns one win and one loss in the double scoring method, the first step of the tie breaker will be the total score for the day. If a tie persists, the regular steps of first, second, and third place finishers will be applied. The following qualifying standards have been established for boys and girls in class AAA for entry into the individual qualifying rounds:
