TIGERS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

For the second straight year, the Tigers won the Pennsylvania Inline Hockey Championship with a 4-3 victory over Bethel Park at Broomall, PA., on Sunday.  The Tigers downed Seneca Valley, 6-3, in the semifinals earlier in the day.

On Saturday, the Tigers won three games to advance to the semfinals.  In the first game, NA defeated Monsignor Bonner, 8-3.  In game two, the Tigers overwhelmed Cardinal O'Hara, 10-4, and the the third game, Springfield was no match for the Tigers in a 15-4 rout.

Senior Ian McGlumphy was selected as the MVP of the Tournament while senior goalie Brian Steinmiller garnered MVG honors.

BIG THIRD PERIOD WINS TITLE FOR TIGERS, 7-3

The Tigers scored four goals in the third period to break a 3-3 tie and win the championship of the Varsity PIRHL Penguin Cup, 7-3,  at the RMU-Island Sports Center of Sunday afternoon.  Senior Chris Gilson led the way with two goals and two assists while senior Ben Basara tallied a goal and two assists.

In the first period, senior Mike Lorish gave the Tigers an early lead on a power play goal at the 11:55 mark with Gilson assisting.  Late in the period, Bethel got the equalizer as Nick Brown tallied a power play goal to tie the game at 1-1 after one period of play.

Bethel Park took their only lead of the game in the second period when Tyler Trocano scored to make it a 2-1 game with 11:07 remaining.  The Tigers answered later in the period with two goals in a 47-second span.  Freshman Dylan Rohar tied the game on an assist from Gilson at the 4:43 mark, and Basara put NA ahead again, 3-2, on an assist by senior Mitch Moulton with 3:56 remaining.  Bethel came back, however, to tie the score as Jon Loeffler found the net with 1:58 left in the stanza.  The teams went to the second intermission tied at 3-3.

In the third period, the Tigers needed only 19 seconds to take the lead as Gilson connected on a power play goal with Basara picking up the helper.  Gilson extended the margin to 5-3 with his second goal at the 10:51 mark.  NA continued to attack with senior Andrew Guntrum scoring a little over two minutes later to extend the margin to 6-3.  Senior Ian McGlumphy put the finishing touches on the victory with a power play goal with 4:03 remaining.  The Tigers went on to win, 7-3, and earn the title.

The Tigers outshot Bethel Park, 27-19, in the game.  Senior Brian Steinmiller stopped sixteen shots in goal to earn the victory for NA.  The win gave the Tigers the championship, two games to one.

With the win, the Tigers improved their record to 18-2-1 as they won their second straight PIRHL title.  NA is the defending state champion and will try to repeat at the state championships on April 8th and 9th.

BETHEL PARK TOPS TIGERS, 7-4,
TO FORCE GAME THREE

Bethel Park defeated the Tigers, 7-4, in the second game of the PIRHL Championship series on Saturday afternoon at the RMU-Island Sports Center.  The Blackhawks came from a 4-3 deficit to score four straight goals to earn the victory.

In the first period, both teams got on the board three times.  Senior Chris Garrett opened the scoring on an assist from senior Chris Korenoski to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead just 42 seconds into the period.  Nick Brown tied the game on a Bethel power play just over a minute later.  Jon Loeffler gave Bethel Park a 2-1 lead on an assist from Matt Carrol at the 8:09 mark.  Senior Ben Basara answered for NA on an assist from senior Ian McGlumphy with 6:45 remaining in the period.  The Blackhawks took a 3-2 lead onLoeffler's second goal at the 3:51 mark.  Senior Alex Kocent tied the game at 3-3 with Korenoski picking up his second assist with 3:00 left in the period as the teams went to the first intermission tied at 3-3.

Early in the second period, senior Chris Gilson put NA back ahead, 4-3, with an unassisted goal at the 12:08 mark.  Carrol answered with an unassisted goal just 43 seconds later to tie the game at 4-4.  Eddie Kessler put the Blackhawks ahead for good, 5-4, with 7:55 remaining in the period.  Neither team could score again in the period as Bethel Park took a 5-4 lead into the final period.

The Blackhawks put the game away with two third-period goals.  Tyler Trocano made it 6-4 on another assist from Kessler at the 12:30 mark.  Carrol scored his second goal of the goal with Kessler adding his third assist as Bethel Park went on to win by a 7-4 score.  The Tigers outshot Bethel, 29-22, on the game.  Joe Timpona was in goal for Bethel Park with senior Brian Steinmiller in net for the Tigers.

With the series now tied at 1-1, the third and final game is scheduled for this afternoon with the championship on the line.  Game three will be played at the RMU-Island Sports Center with game time scheduled for 2:30 pm.

TIGERS EDGE BETHEL PARK, 3-2, IN
FINAL SERIES OPENER

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three playoffs for the PIRHL Championship with a 3-2 victory over Bethel Park at the RMU-Island Sports Center on Sunday night.  Three different Tigers scored goals in the important victory.  Senior Ben Basara, Senior Mitch Moulton, and senior Alex Kocent all tallied NA goals.

After the game was scoreless for the first nine plus minutes of play, Basara gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead on an assist from senior Chris Garrett.  NA held a 1-0 advantage after one period of play.

Early in the second period, the Blackhawks tied the game at 1-1 on a goal from Matt Carrol at the 11:39 mark.  A little more than two minutes later, Moulton put the Tigers back on top on an assist from senior Ian McGlumphy.  Kocent made it 3-1 with a tally at the 6:06 mark.  The Tigers took a two-goal lead into the second intermission.

The NA defense, in support of senior goalie Brian Steinmiller, held off Bethel for most of the final period.  Nick Brown scored with just 1:12 left, but it was not enough as the Tigers went on to the 3-2 victory.  NA outshot Bethel Park, 32-25, in the game.

The victory improved the overall NA record to 17-1-1 on the season.  With NA leading 1-0 in the series, game two is scheduled for Saturday night at the RMU-Island Sports Center.  Game time is set for 7:45 pm.

TIGERS CRUSH SENECA, 14-1, TO
ADVANCE TO FINALS

The Tigers scored six goals in each of the first two periods on their way to an easy 14-1 victory over Seneca Valley in the semifinals of the PIRHL playoffs at the RMU-Island Sports Center on Sunday afternoon.  Senior Mitch Moulton scored four goals while senior Ben Basara added three goals and four assists as the Tigers won the series, two games to none.

The Tigers took the lead early and never looked back.  Senior Chris Gilson gave NA a 1-0 lead on an assist from Basara at the 13:20 mark.  It remained that way until the Tigers scored a flurry of goals beginning with a score by senior Ian McGlumphy at the 5:40 mark.  Moulton got his first goal just fifteen seconds later to make it a 3-0 game.  Twenty seconds later Basara scored his first goal to push the lead to 4-0.  Senior Alex Kocent added another goal at the 3:30 mark, and Moulton scored his second with 25 seconds remaining as the Tigers took a commanding 6-0 advantage after one period of play.

In the second period, it was more of the same.  Senior Mike Lorish scored an unassisted goal just 20 seconds into the period to push the margin to 7-0.  Basara added his second of the game to push the lead to 8-0 at the 11:15 mark.  Two quick goals from Kocent and senior Andrew Guntrum with six minutes remaining extended the margin to 10-0.  Guntrum got his second and Moulton his third to complete the second period scoring as the Tigers took a 12-0 lead into the final period.

Moulton added his fourth goal and Basara his third in the final period with Eric Hajduk finally getting the Raiders on the scoreboard as NA won, 14-1.  The Tigers outshot the Raiders, 44-14, in the game.  Senior Brian Steinmiller was in goal for the winning Tigers.

With the victory, the Tigers advance to the finals of the PIRHL playoffs.  NA will meet Bethel Park, a 5-3 winner over Baldwin on Sunday.  The finals will begin next Sunday.

TIGERS STOP SENECA VALLEY, 3-1,
 IN FIRST GAME OF PIRHL PLAYOFFS

The Tigers defeated Seneca Valley, 3-1, at the RMU-Island Sports Center on Sunday night in the first game of the PIRHL playoffs.  Senior Chris Gilson led the way, scoring all three NA goals as they took a 1-0 lead in the best of three series.

Gilson put the Tigers on top with an unassisted goal at the 4:10 mark.  Seneca Valley answered when Sean Nelson tied the game on an assist from Kevin Day.  The teams went to the first intermission tied at 1-1.

Early in the second period, Gilson struck again to give NA a 2-1 advantage with 12:30 remaining in the stanza.  Neither team could score again as the Tigers took a 2-1 advantage into the final period.  Gilson scored his third unassisted goal with just 3:15 remaining.  The Tigers held off the Raiders for the remainder of the contest to take the 3-1 decision.

The Tigers outshot Seneca Valley, 37-14.  Senior Brian Steinmiller was solid in net allowing just one goal to earn the victory.  Game two of the series will be played on Sunday.  Game time at the RMU-Island Sports Center is scheduled for 2:30 pm.

TIGERS DOWN WEST ALLEGHENY, 5-3, TO FINISH FIRST IN REGULAR SEASON

Senior Alex Kocent's second goal of the game with 1:03 remaining was the game winner in a 5-3 victory over West Allegheny at the RMU-Island Sports Center on Monday night.  Senior Ben Basara notched an empty net goal with eleven seconds left to secure the victory.  The goal was Basara's third of the contest.

West Allegheny took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Rob Palonis at the 9:15 mark of the first period.  Neither team scored again in the period as the Indians took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.  In the second period, Basara tied the game at 1-1 with an unassisted goal with 9:48 remaining.  The game remained tied at 1-1 after two periods of play.

The Tigers took the lead early in the third period when Kocent scored on an assist from senior Mitch Moulton at the 10:51 mark.  Basara's second goal, on an assist from senior Mike Lorish,  increased the lead to 3-1 with 8:28 remaining.  Ryan Huebner narrowed the lead to 3-2 just 19 seconds later.  With 3:57 remaining, Huebner scored again to tie the game at 3-3.  Kocent came through with an unassisted goal with just 1:03 on the clock to put the Tigers ahead for good at 4-3.  Basara completed the hat trick with his empty netter as NA went on to the 5-3 victory.

The Tigers outshot West Allegheny, 32-18, on the game.  Senior Brian Steinmiller stopped 15 shots to earn the victory in net for NA.

With the win, the Tigers wrapped up the regular season championship with a record of 14-1-1.  The Tigers will open the playoffs on Sunday night against the winner of the 4th and 5th seeded teams.  Game time is scheduled for 5:30 pm at the RMU-Island Sports Center.

FOUR-GOAL SECOND PERIOD LEADS TIGERS OVER BETHEL PARK, 8-2

After a 2-2 tie after one period of play, the Tigers exploded for four goals in the second period on their way to an 8-2 victory over Bethel Park at the RMU-Island Sports Center on Saturday night.  Senior Chris Gilson led the way with three goals and two assists.  Senior Alex Kocent added a pair of goals for the winning Tigers.

Senior Mitch Moulton got the Tigers off to a good start with a goal on an assist from senior Ian McGlumphy at the 9:46 mark.  McGlumphy scored with 6:04 remaining in the period to increase the margin to 2-0.  Bethel Park struck back, however, to tie the game on goals by Nick Brown and Jon Loeffler as the teams went to the first intermission tied at 2-2.

The Tigers put the game away with a four-goal second period.  Kocent gave NA the lead for good with a goal at the 11:55 mark on an assist from senior Mike Lorish.  Senior Andrew Guntrum made it 4-2 with senior Chris Garrett assisting at the just 48 seconds later.  Gilson scored the first of his three goals on an assist by Guntrum to extend the lead to 5-2 with 9:48 remaining.  An unassisted goal by Gilson pushed the lead to 6-2 after two periods of play.

Gilson netted his third goal at the 5:32 mark to make it a 7-2 game. Kocent's second goal finished the scoring as the Tigers went on to the impressive 8-2 victory.

The Tigers outshot the Blackhawks, 37-25, on the game.  Senior goalie Brian Steinmiller stopped 23 shots to earn the win.  The win improved the NA record in PIRHL play to 13-1-1 with just one regular season game to play.

GILSON'S FOUR GOALS LEAD TIGERS
OVER AVONWORTH, 12-1

Senior Chris Gilson scored four times as the Tigers overwhelmed Avonworth, 12-1, at the RMU-Island Sports Center on Sunday night.  Senior Alex Kocent added three goals and senior Chris Korenoski had a pair of tallies in the easy victory.

The Tigers put the game away with a six-goal outburst in the first period.  Gilson made it 1-0 on an assist from senior Mike Lorish at the 9:22 mark.  A little over a minute later, senior Andrew Guntrum scored on an assist from senior Ian McGlumphy to make it a 2-0 game.  Junior Eric Pelly increased the margin to 3-0 with 7:45 remaining with McGlumphy recording his second of four assists.  Gilson scored his second goal at the 2:45 mark with Lorish assisting to give NA a 4-0 advantage.  Korenoski scored an unassisted goal to increase the margin to 5-0 with 2:04 left in the period.  Gilson scored his third goal of the period  on an assist from senior Chris Garrett with 29 seconds left to give the Tigers a commanding 6-0 lead after one period.

In the second period, the Tigers kept the pressure on with six more goals.  Kocent got his first from McGlumphy early in the period as the lead went to 7-0.  Avonworth got on the board at the 5:48 mark when Eli Jackson scored to cut the lead to 7-1.  Pelly scored his second goal of the game one minute later to push the lead to 8-1.  Korenoski's second unassisted goal at the 4:27 mark made it 9-1.  Korenoski set up Kocent for his second with 3:16 remaining to push the lead to 10-1.  Gilson scored his fourth goal from McGlumphy with 2:37 left to extend the margin to 11-1.  Kocent scored his third goal of the game with 41 seconds remaining to give the Tigers a 12-1 lead after two periods.

Neither team scored in the third period as the Tigers coasted to the 12-1 victory.  NA outshot Avonworth, 53-25, for the game.  Senior Brian Steinmiller was in goal and picked up the victory stopping 24 of 25 shots.

The win was the sixth straight for NA and improved their first-place record to 12-1-1 in the PIRHL standings.  The Tigers will meet Bethel Park on Saturday night at the RMU-Island Sports Center in their next action.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Senior Mitch Moulton tallied four goals on Sunday afternoon to lead the Tigers to an 8-5 victory over Seneca Valley at the RMU-Island Sports Center.  Sophomore Steve Leibhart scored a pair of goals as the Tigers won their fourth straight.  Senior Alex Kocent and Bryan Greco also scored for the winning Tigers.

Seneca Valley jumped off to a 1-0 lead early when Sean Nelson scored just 1:01 into the game.  Greco came back to tie the score at 1-1 on an assist from senior Ben Basara at the 10:40 mark.  Nick Carranza put the Raiders back on top, 2-1, just 40 seconds later.  Kocent answered for the Tigers to tie the score at the 9:33 mark.  NA finally took the lead late in the period when Leibhart knocked in his first goal to give the Tigers a 3-2 advantage after one period.

Once again, Seneca struck early in the second period with Derek Andrekovich tying the game just 54 seconds into the stanza.  Moulton came back with his first goal at the 4:24 mark as the Tigers took a one-goal lead, 4-3, into the final period.

Moulton took over the game early in the third period with two more unassisted goals to push the margin to 6-3 with 11:32 left in the game.  Liebhart added his second goal to make it 7-3 at the 8:44 mark.  Nelson answered with his second goal to cut the lead to 7-4 with 2:30 remaining.  Moulton came back with his fourth goal of the game a little over a minute later to push the lead to 8-4.  Andrekovich completed the scoring with his second goal, but it not enough as the Tigers picked up an 8-5 victory over the Raiders.

With the win, the Tigers improved the PIRHL record to 10-1-1 to remain in first place in the league standings.  NA will travel to Bladerunners in Harmarville on Sunday afternoon to meet Baldwin.  Game time is set for 2:00 pm.

PIRHL 2005-06

North Allegheny competes in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Roller Hockey League which has to date grown to 73 teams from 29 area school districts.  NA has participated in the league as a club sport since 1999.  This year, the varsity teams plays in the Varsity I league along with nine other teams.

All games are played at the RMU-Island Sports Center.  The games are played on an official sized rink, which is 185' x 85' with full dasher boards and is specifically designed for inline hockey.  There are three fifteen minute running time periods with no off sides or icing and is played four on four plus a goalie.
