THIRD PERIOD GOALS LIFT LEBO OVER TIGERS, 3-1

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers held unbeaten Mt. Lebanon to a 1-1 tie through two periods, but the Blue Devils scored twice in the final stanza on their way to a 3-1 victory over NA in the PIHL Class AAA Penguin Cup Championship game at the Mellon Arena on Saturday night.  Senior Joe Camut gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead early, but Lebo tied the game before the end of the third period.

The game started with both teams playing a conservative defensive style in the early minutes of the contest.  Lebo's Jesse Root took a hooking penalty at the 4:52 mark that gave NA the first scoring chance of the game.  After the Tigers won a face-off to the left of Lebo goalie Matt Vaughan, senior defenseman Ian McGlumphy sent a shot toward the Mt. Lebanon goal.  Vaughan made the initial save, but Camut poked the rebound into the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage with 6:39 gone in the period.  Senior James Cichra made a great individual effort a little over three minutes later when he took the puck behind his own goal, skated the length of the ice, and tied the game with a shot that beat sophomore goalie Max Richards with 5:07 left in the period.  The Tiger had a great chance to take the lead late in the period, but Vaughan robbed junior Matt Lancaster from right in front of the goal to keep the game tied at 1-1 after one period.

The second period was scoreless, but Mt. Lebanon dominated play outshooting the Tigers, 10-2.  The NA defense and Richards kept Lebo off the board, however, and it was the Tigers who had the best scoring chance.  Once again it was Lancaster.  NA junior Wes Waldschmidt sent the Tiger junior free down the right side, but Vaughan was able to make a big save to keep the game scoreless with 5:08 remaining in the period.  For the remainder of the period, the Lebo defense, led by senior captain Matt Bartkowski, kept the Tigers bottled up as the period ended with the teams still tied at 1-1.

The Blue Devils came out strong early in the period in a determined effort to take the lead.  Senior Alan Halapin was sent off for hooking at the 12:41 mark, and Lebo almost scored the go ahead goal.  Only a last second play by senior defenseman Paul Dittrich kept the puck out of the NA goal.  Later in the power play, Richards made a good stop on senior forward Josh Mandic to keep the game tied.  Lebo kept pressuring the NA goal and it finally paid off when junior Sean McDermott poked in a rebound after Richards made two straight saves.  The go ahead goal came with 7:32 remaining.  NA got a chance to tie the game when Mandic was called for hooking at the 6:50 mark.  The Tigers attacked the Lebo goal, but Vaughan stopped Halapin's initial shot and then turned away rebound attempts by both Waldschmidt and Lancaster to keep Mt. Lebanon on top.  The three shots on the power play were the only NA shots of the period.  Later in the period, junior Brandon Dornish snapped home an insurance goal on a power play as Lebo extended the margin to 3-1 with just 4:21 left.  The Blue Devil defense took over for the remainder of the game as Mt. Lebanon won their second title in  the past three years.

It was a great effort by the Tigers who were hurt by injuries and illness.  NA never gave up against a tough Lebo team that set a defensive record by giving up only 13 goals during the regular season.  Lebo outshot NA, 29-9, to give an indication of the territorial advantage that the Blue Devils had for much of the game.  For his efforts and for giving the Tigers an early lead, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Joe Camut as the Player of the Game.

The loss dropped the NA overall record to 21-4 on the season.  For the second consecutive season, the Tigers won the silver medal as the PIHL Class AAA runnerup.  The Tigers were the North Division Champions.

CONGRATULATIONS TO COACH SCHENK AND THE TIGERS FOR A GREAT SEASON!

TIGERS POUND MEADVILLE TO ADVANCE TO PENGUIN CUP FINAL

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Led by senior Alan Halapin's hat trick, the Tigers avenged an earlier loss to Meadville by thrashing the Bulldogs, 7-0, in the PIHL Class AAA Penguin Cup semifinals at the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon on Wednesday night.  Junior Dan Gaertner added three assists while senior Chris Gilson, junior Matt Lancaster, sophomore Josh Herbert, and junior Nick Vaglia all tallied goals for the winning Tigers.

The Tigers put pressure on sophomore Meadville goalie Bryan Danczak right from the outset as they kept the puck in the Bulldog end for the first two minutes of the game.  Lancaster was stopped by Danczak on a rebound from right in front of the goal just one minute into the contest.  Halapin was able to get to the rebound of his own shot and score the game's first goal with 10:13 remaining to give NA a 1-0 advantage.  Just ten seconds later, Bulldog captain Brian Stanton was sent off for tripping, but the Tigers could not score again.  Meadville's Morgan Nickerson had the best chance shorthanded, but NA sophomore goalie Max Richards made a key save early in the power play.  Later in the period, Halapin was sent to the box for tripping.  The Tiger penalty killers, led by junior Wes Waldschmidt kept Meadville out of the NA zone for most of the period in killing off the power play.  Neither team scored for the remainder of the period as the Tigers took a 1-0 advantage to the first intermission.

Just fifty seconds into the second period, junior defense Brad Schwartzmier drew an interference penalty, but once again the Tiger penalty killers did the job.  Halapin picked up his second goal when he drove home a cross ice pass from Gaertner at the 11:50 mark to increase the NA lead to 2-0.  With senior defenseman Ian McGlumphy in the box for holding, Richards was forced to make another big save during the power play at the 10:20 mark on Bulldog junior forward Pat Leone to keep the lead at 2-0.  Meadville had two other chances but Richards stopped both Nickerson and Stanton to keep the Bulldogs off the board.  With 5:42 left, Halapin slid a shot from a bad angle on the right side that Danczak misplayed for the third goal of the game by the Tiger All-Star forward.  With the Tigers ahead, 3-0, Stanton was sent off again at the 5:29 mark.  The Tigers made Meadville pay this time as Gilson sent home a rebound over the sprawling Danczak to give NA a commanding 4-0 lead after two periods.

Early in the third period, the Tigers scored on two breakaways to take away any chance of a Meadville comeback.  With the Bulldogs pressing to get back in the game, Dittrich sent Lancaster away all alone into the Meadville zone.  The Tiger junior made no mistake and beat Danczak cleanly to make it 5-0 just twenty-nine seconds into the period.  Less than two minutes later, Herbert stole a clearing pass and skated in alone again.  The NA sophomore shot high and into the net over the right shoulder of Danczak and the rout was on with NA taking a 6-0 lead.  Midway through the period, Vaglia was able to put a rebound behind Danczak to finish the scoring as the Tigers coasted to a 7-0 victory.

Coming into the game, the Tigers were the #3 seed just behind #2 Meadvillle, thanks to a 3-1 Meadville win over the Tigers at Meadville late in the season.  Neither Halapin nor Gaertner played in that game but made their presence felt in the big semifinal victory.  Richards was strong in goal when he had to be, stopping 15 Meadville shots to earn the shutout and the victory.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Alan Halapin as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers advance to the Penguin Cup final against Mt. Lebanon, a 4-3 winner over Bethel Park last night.  The championship game will be played at Mellon Arena next Saturday with the opening faceoff set for 5:00 pm.  The win marked the second consecutive year NA will play in the championship final.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 4:45 pm.

CAMUT'S GOAL IN OT SENDS TIGERS TO SEMIFINALS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior forward Joe Camut took a perfect pass from senior Chris Gilson and scored the game winner with 6:00 remaining in the second overtime period to give the Tigers a 2-1 victory over Central Catholic in PIHL Penguin Cup quarterfinal action at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night.  Sophomore Josh Herbert had given the Tigers an early 1-0 lead with a first period goal.  A large crowd in Warrendale was treated to an outstanding high school hockey game that the Tigers were able to put out in the second overtime period.

Early in the first period, Central had a great chance to take the lead, but NA sophomore goalie Max Richards made a tough save on a shot by CC junior Chris Urso just 29 seconds into the game.  Gilson skated in from the right side with 11:46 left in the period but his shot was stopped by Central goalie Rob Magyarics to keep the game scoreless.  Senior Joe Kerr hit the side of the net after Richards came out of his goal with a little over eight minutes remaining.  With 8:47 left, Central's Ryan Gebler was sent off for hooking to give NA the first power play of the game.  Junior Matt Lancaster got off two good shots on the power play, but Magyarics once again was there for the saves.  The Tigers finally broke through with 4:02 on the first period clock when Lancaster sent a pass out from behind the goal to Herbert who beat Magyarics with a high shot over the stick side to give NA the 1-0 advantage.  Neither team scored during the remainder of a very physical first period.

Central wasted no time in the second period in tying the game.  Urso broke free down the left side on a 2-on-1 and hit Kerr right in front of the NA goal.  The Viking senior beat Richards to tie the game just 17 seconds into the period.  The Tigers came back strong after the goal and had several scoring opportunities.  Camut had the best chance but missed the goal on a rebound attempt at the 12:45 mark.  With the teams playing at four aside, senior forward Alan Halapin was stopped by Magyarics with 10:07 left in the period.  At the 7:12 mark, Herbert's high shot was knocked down by Magyarics and kept out of the goal.  Senior defenseman Paul Dittrich made a coast to coast rush less than a minute later but could not beat the Central netminder.  Central's Andy Hanno had the best Viking opportunity but his shot hit the side of the net with 5:45 left.  Neither team scored again in the period, and the teams went to the second intermission tied at 1-1.

With the game on the line, the third period was marked by strong defensive play by both teams.  Central had a territorial edge for much of the period, but the Tiger defense and Richards held them off the board.  With 3:57 left, Central's Gen Sherwin was called for a penalty giving NA a chance to win.  The CC defense kept the Tigers from getting any quality chances and with 2:39 remaining Dittrich was sent to the box.  Neither team could score during the four-on-four and NA killed off the remaining time in the Central power play as regulation time ran out to send the game to overtime.

In the first overtime period, both teams went for the win with offensive rushes that provided scoring opportunities.  Lancaster's shot midway through the period was stopped by Magyarics who then also made a good save on Herbert's rebound attempt with 5:37 on the clock.  Later in the period, Richards came up big on a shot from the left side by Jon Buczkowski.  Time ran out in the first OT with the game still tied at 1-1.

The Tigers took control in the second overtime.  Early in the period, junior Wes Waldschmidt was robbed by Magyarics from right in front of the goal to keep the game tied.  Finally, after several other scoring opportunities, the Tigers cashed in.  After Halapin made a good clearing pass along the right boards, Gilson beat several defenders down the right side.  At the last second, the NA senior slid a pass across the crease to a breaking Camut who beat Magyarics cleanly to give the Tigers an exciting 2-1 victory.

In spite of a 2-1 score, both teams had numerous scoring opportunities.  The outstanding play in goal of both Richards and Magyarics kept them off the board.  The Tigers outshot Central, 33-26, overall in the game.  For his heroics at the end of the game, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Joe Camut as the Player of the Game.

With the victory, the Tigers advance to the PIHL Penguin Cup semifinals next Wednesday at the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon.  With the reseeding of teams after each round, the opponent has not yet been determined, but it will be either Meadville, Bethel Park or Penn-Trafford.  The time of the game will be determined later also.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet.

TIGERS CRUSH SHALER, 10-0, IN
REGULAR SEASON FINALE

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Led by hat tricks by both senior Paul Dittrich and junior Wes Waldschmidt, the Tigers had little trouble with neighborhood rival Shaler in a 10-0 victory at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night.  Junior Matt Lancaster, freshman Dylan Rohar, freshman Donny Lewis, and senior Chris Gilson also scored for the Tigers as they prepared for the upcoming PIHL Playoffs.  Sophomore Josh Herbert recorded three assists on the night.

For the first six minutes of the game, Shaler kept the Tigers off the board, mainly due to the efforts of All-Star goalie, Nick Bennardo.  When the Titans took a penalty with 8:58 remaining, the door was opened.  Dittrich scored the power play goal on an assist from senior Alan Halapin to give NA a 1-0 advantage just 27 seconds into the power play.  The Tigers settled the issue with three goals in the final 3:20 of the period.  Wes Waldschmidt slammed in a rebound from right in front of the goal to make it 2-0.  Waldschmidt followed with a hard shot from the slot that beat Bennardo at the 2:27 mark to give NA a 3-0 lead.  As time was winding down, Dittrich skated in from center ice and beat Bennardo with a high shot just under the crossbar.  The Tigers took a commanding 4-0 lead after one period.

The second period was more of the same as the Tigers dominated play.  Once again the Titans went to the penalty box early just 55 seconds into the stanza.  Dittrich made them pay with his third goal on the power play with assists going to Gilson and Wes Waldschmidt.  Less than a minute later, Wes Waldschmidt drove home his third goal on assists from Lancaster and Herbert.  Lancaster made it 7-0 on a nice passing play with Wes Waldschmidt and Herbert combining to set up the NA junior at the 10:03 mark.  With 3:42 left in the period, Dittrich skated in from center ice, went behind the net, and his centering pass was rolled in by Rohar to increase the margin to 8-0 after two periods.

In the third period with the clock running as the mercy rule kicked in, the Tigers added two more goals.  Lewis put in a rebound of a hard slap shot by Dittrich to make it 9-0 at the 10:41 mark.  Gilson put the finishing touches on the win with a hard shot that beat backup goal Brent Baberich with just 1:02 left in the game.  The Tigers completed the 10-0 victory and will now get ready for the playoffs.

Junior Adam Lutty went the distance for NA in goal to earn the shutout, his fourth of the season.  The NA defense kept Shaler off balance throughtout the game limiting the Titans to just a few chances and shots.  For his efforts both scoring and in the defensive end, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Paul Dittrich as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers completed the regular PIHL season with a record of 19-3.  As the North Division Champions, NA received a bye in the first round of the playoffs.  The Tigers will play at home next Tuesday night against Central Catholic. NA defeated Central, 3-0, earlier in the season. The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm at Bladerunners in Warrendale.

TIGERS BLANK CENTRAL CATHOLIC, 3-0,
ON SENIOR NIGHT

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers broke a two-game losing streak on Tuesday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale with a 3-0 victory over Central Catholic.  It was Senior Night with seven NA seniors and their parents being honored before the game.  Senior Joe Camut, junior Matt Lancaster, and senior Ian McGlumphy scored goals for the Tigers with junior Wes Waldschmidt recording three assists.

Early in the first period, sophomore goalie Max Richards made a key save with 12:49 remaining to keep the game scoreless.  The Tigers had several chances during a power play after Adrien Scherer was sent off at the 11:15 mark.  Viking goalie Bob Magyarics was able to keep NA off the board with several big stops.  Camut had a good chance at the 4:30 mark but once again Magyarics was able to make the save.  Chris Urso broke in from the left side at the 2:45 mark, but Richards was there to make the save.  The Tigers finally grabbed the lead when Camut broke in on a two-on-one with Lancaster.  After faking a pass, Camut beat Magyarics with a low shot along the ice to give NA a 1-0 lead with 2:30 remaining.

In the second period, C.J. Burke of the Vikings had the first good chance at the 11:42 mark , but Richards stood tall in the goal to keep NA in front.  Central had several opportunities during a power play early in the period but could not score.  Lancaster forced Magyarics to come up big with 7:29 remaining.  The Tigers were able to open a two-goal lead when Lancaster scored from right in front of the net with Waldschmidt and sophomore Josh Herbert picking up assists on the play.  The goal at the 4:59 mark gave NA a 2-0 advantage.  The Tigers got another chance on a power play late in the period but did not score.  NA took a 2-0 lead into the final period.

Neither team had many scoring chances in the third period.  The Tigers turned up the defensive pressure with senior defensemen Paul Dittrich and Ian McGlumphy helping to keep the Vikings bottled up.  Late the period, the Tigers went on a power play.  Waldschmidt set up McGlumphy just to the left of Magyarics and the NA senior scored his first goal of the PIHL season and put the game out of reach.

The Tigers outshot Central, 20-15, for the game.  For his efforts in the net, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Max Richards as the Player of the Game.  Richards stopped all fifteen shots to earn his third shutout of the season.

The win improved the NA record in PIHL play to 18-3.  The Tigers have already clinched the North Division title and a place in the PIHL playoffs.  NA will host Shaler on Tuesday, February 28, in the final regular season contest.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 8:20 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 8:30 pm.
