FOX CHAPEL HOLDS OFF LADY TIGERS
IN 58-48 VICTORY

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers stayed close for three quarters, but Fox Chapel was able to pick up a 58-48 victory at the Senior High gym on Monday night.  Led by senior Lauren Cowher with 17 points, the Foxes stayed in the playoff hunt with the victory.  Sophomore Maria Nolan had 13 points to pace NA with senior Rachel Divosevic adding ten.

The first quarter was a fast-paced period of play with both teams fast breaking and scoring.  Junior Catlyn Kriston got the Foxes off to a good start with a triple from the corner, but Divosevic answered with a jumper to make it a 3-2 game.  Nolan his a three to tie the game at 5-5 at the 6:16 mark.  After Lauren Cowher put the Foxes up 7-5, 6-3 senior center Erin Cooper scored on a drive down the lane to extend the margin to 9-5.  Freshman Jackie Lang came back to drop in a pair of foul shots, but Lauren Cowher scored again to put the Foxes up by four at 11-7.  Nolan made two from the line before senior Bethany Thompson hit a long jumper to make it 13-9.  Divosevic got loose again to drop in a short banker, but Lauren Cowher pushed the lead back to four with two free throws at the 2:01 mark.  Junior Kristen Beatty then came alive with a pair of field goals to tie the game at 15-15 with 1:10 left in the period.  A foul shot by senior Carrie DeStout and a basket by freshman Lindsay Cowher gave the Foxes an 18-15 advantage after one period.

The scoring tempo slowed in the second quarter.  After Divosevic scored to cut the lead to one, senior Amanda Dice scored on a fast break layup to put NA ahead, 19-18.  Just seconds later, Thompson drained a trey to give the Foxes a 21-19 advantage.  De Stout followed with another triple to extend the lead to five points.  After senior Lisa Gleason made two foul shots,  Cooper scored from under the hoop to push the lead to 26-21.  The Lady Tigers kept battling back, however, with Nolan dropping a pair from the line.  After Lauren Cowher hit one of two from the stripe, Beatty scored her third basket of the game to cut the Fox Chapel lead to 27-25 at the intermission.

The Foxes threatened to open a bigger lead on several occasions in the third quarter, but the Lady Tigers answered each time.  After Kriston opened the second half scoring with a triple, Beatty scored again to cut the margin to 30-27.  Lauren Cowher hit a jumper to push the margin to five again, but baskets by Nolan and Lang cut the lead to 32-31 with 5:48 left in the period.  The Foxes scored the next six points on  a jumper by Lindsay Cowher, a layup by DeStout, and yet another hoop by Lauren Cowher.  Once again, NA answered on a basket by Divosevic, a put back by Gleason, around a basket by Thompson as the Foxes took a 41-37 lead.  Junior Sarah Haas drained a trey with 41 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 41-40.  Foul shots by DeStout and Lauren Cowher gave the Foxes a 43-40 lead after three quarters of play.

Fox Chapel took command early in the fourth quarter.  Two foul shots each by Lauren Cowher and Kriston  increased the margin to 47-40 before Nolan scored to bring NA to within five.  A hoop by senior Caroline Heffernan was matched by a jumper from Haas to make it 49-44 with 5:13 left in the game.  After Thompson hit a pair from the line, Haas scored again to cut the lead to 51-46 at the 4:45 mark.  The Foxes slowed the action at this point, but a three by Kriston pushed the lead to 54-46 with 3:04 left.  Thompson scored again to give FC their biggest lead at 56-46 with 2:53 on the clock.  After Divosevic scored at the 1:02 mark, Kriston's two fouls shots closed out the scoring as Fox Chapel went on to a 58-48 victory.

The game had a Pittsburgh Steeler look to it as the Lady Tigers took their warmup dressed in Steeler jerseys.  In the visiting stands, Steeler Head Coach Bill Cowher was there to root for his two daughters.  In the end, the Foxes posted the same result as the Steelers did the day before in much the same manner --- holding the lead for most of the game and extending the margin in the final quarter.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Maria Nolan as the NA Player of the Game.

The loss dropped the NA section record to 4-9, the overall mark to 11-11.  NA will travel to North Hills on Thursday night as they complete play in Section 3.  On Saturday afternoon, the Lady Tigers will finish the season with a trip to Hollidaysburg for a 2:30 pm contest.

SENECA VALLEY PULLS AWAY IN SECOND HALF
TO DOWN LADY TIGERS, 63-44

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Playing without leading scorer Rachel Divosevic who was ill, the Lady Tigers played second-place Seneca Valley even for a half, but could not stop the Raiders in the second half in a 63-44 loss at the Senior High gym on Tuesday night.  Junior Sarah Haas netted 11 points to lead NA while Tina Mangola scored 21 for Seneca Valley.

The Lady Tigers came out with an aggressive pressing man-to-man defense, and it worked in the first quarter as the Raiders could score only seven points.  After junior Kelsey Spencer and junior Maria Nolan exchanged foul shots, Haas hit a long trey to put NA on top, 4-1.  Mangola answered seconds later to tie the game at 4-4.  A foul shot and hoop by senior Chelsea Pavlick gave SV a 7-4 advantage before freshman Dawn Murphy hit a jumper to cut the lead to 7-6 as the quarter ended.

In the second quarter, the Lady Tigers continued to pressure the ball with good results.  Baskets by Mangola and senior Ashley Turici pushed the lead to 11-6, but Murphy scored again to cut it to 11-8 with 6:18 still on the clock.  After Turici made one of two from the line, NA scored the next five points to take the lead.  A foul shot by junior Marissa Posteraro, a basket by Nolan and a trey by senior Amanda Dice put NA ahead, 14-12.  Turici scored from under the basket to tie the game, but Haas hit one of two from the line to give the Tigers a 15-14 advantage.  Nolan's jumper pushed it to 17-14, but Pavlick came back on a drive to cut the lead to one.  Mangola then hit her second triple of the game to give SV the lead, but Posteraro answered with a trey to make it a 20-19 NA lead.  After Pavlick made two from the line, Haas hit a jumper from just inside the arc to give the Lady Tigers a 22-21 lead.  Spencer scored with just under a minute left to put the Raiders ahead by one.  With time running out, Mangola was fouled from beyond the arc and calmly made all three foul shots to give Seneca a 26-22 advantage at the intermission.

The Raiders came out strong in the third quarter and took control of the game.  After freshman Jackie Lang scored early to cut the lead to two, Seneca went on a 7-0 run to take a 33-24 lead.  Haas ended the run with a jumper, but Mangola's third triple of the game pushed the margin to 36-26.  Haas answered with a big trey to cut the lead to seven, but the Raiders continued to score.  The Raiders closed out the quarter with a 9-3 run with the only NA points coming on a foul shots by junior Kristen Beatty and Lang.  Seneca Valley took a commanding 45-32 lead into the final quarter.

The Lady Tigers scored the first five points of the fourth quarter on a put back by senior Lisa Gleason, a foul shot by Posteraro, and two more free throws by Nolan to cut the lead to 45-37.  Four Seneca foul shots and a basket by Pavlick countered a hoop by Gleason as the margin went to 52-39.  Two foul shots by Mangola extended the margin to 15 before Gleason answered with a pair from the line.  Murphy hit a three with 2:01 remaining to cut the lead to 57-41 but down the stretch the Raiders were able to convert on four of five from the line on their way to the 63-44 victory.

It was a good effort by the undermanned Lady Tigers.  The size and experience of Seneca Valley proved to be too much in the end as the Raiders pulled away in the fourth quarter.  SV made 22 of 38 foul shots while the Lady Tigers were 11 of 18 from the line.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Sarah Haas as the Player of the Game.

The loss dropped the NA section record to 3-8 and eliminated the Lady Tigers from the playoff race.  NA will travel to Pine-Richland on Thursday night to meet the Rams in a section contest.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
