After holding a 29-28 halftime lead, the Tigers saw Central Catholic rebound with a strong second half as they defeated NA, 70-52, at Fox Chapel in the first round of the WPIAL Playoffs on Tuesday night.  Junior Phil Hoffman tallied 14 points and senior Dan Lavallee 12 to pace NA.  Junior Chris Saltzman led Central with 19 points.

The Tigers got off to a good start early.  After senior Pat Ionadi scored on a layup, Hoffman answered to tie the game at 2-2.  Lavallee got loose for a trey to make it 5-2 before Saltzman dropped in a pair of free throws.  Senior Matt Sudo scored from under the hoop and converted on a three-point play to push the margin to 8-4 at the 5:20 mark.  Two foul shots and a three by Joe Berenato, along with a hoop by senior Sean Devinney put Central back on top, 11-8.  A basket by senior Ryan Tiesi and another three by Lavallee pushed the Tigers back ahead, 13-11, with 1:08 left in the quarter.  Senior Ben Dvorsky beat the buzzer from under the hoop to give the Tigers a 15-11 advantage after one quarter.

Central opened the second quarter with an 11-0 run to take a 22-15 lead.  Hoops and foul shots by Berenato and Ionadi, along with a hoop by Saltzman led the Viking charge.  Tiesi ended the run with a jumper to cut the margin to 22-17 with 4:12 lft in the quarter.  Lavallee's long three cut the lead to 22-20 before Ionadi pushed the lead back to four with two from the line.  Hoffman scored from the paint, but Ionadi answered to make it 26-22.  The Tigers continued to battle as Tiesi hit two free throws.  After Hoffman made one of two foul shots to cut the lead to one, Devinney scored to push the margin to 28-25.  Ben Dvorsky was fouled under the basket and converted both shots to cut the lead to one.  With 42 seconds left, senior John Evans got loose for a layup to put the Tigers ahead.  NA took a 29-28 lead into the intermission.

The third quarter belong to Central and Saltzman.  The Vikings outscored the Tigers, 19-6, with Saltzman scoring 15 points.  After Hoffman opened the scoring with two foul shots, Saltzman answered with a three and added a foul shot for a four point play to put Central ahead, 32-31.  Saltman pushed the margin to 37-32 before Evans drained a trey from the corner to cut the lead to 37-35.  It was as close as the Tigers would get in the remainder of the game.  Central closed out the quarter with a 10-0 run to take a 47-35 lead into the final period.

The Tigers continued to have trouble scoring in the final period as Central pushed the lead to 51-36 before Hoffman dropped in a short jumper to cut it a thirteen point deficit with 6:41 left.  Central made 11 of 16 from the line as the Tigers were forced to foul.  The closest the Tigers could get was within ten at 53-43 on Lavallee's fourth trey of the game.

It was a good effort by the Tigers but they ran into a hot shooting Central team in the second half.  The Vikings also were tough at the foul line, converting on 25 of 32 for the game.  The Tigers made 12 of 18 from the stripe.  For his efforts both scoring and on the boards, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Phil Hoffman as the Player of the Game.

The loss eliminated the Tigers from the playoffs.  NA finished the season with an overall record of 17-7.  The Tigers had a good season capturing the Section 3 title for the second straight year.

TIGERS HOLD OFF SHALER, 59-51, TO MAINTAIN LEAD IN SECTION 3

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Led by senior Ryan Tiesi's foul shooting down the stretch, the Tigers defeated Shaler, 59-51, at the Senior High gym on Friday night.  Senior Dan Lavallee hit six treys and led NA to leads of 14 and 13 points before Shaler rallied late in the game.  Senior Craig Devinney had 18 points to pace the Titans.

The first quarter was evenly played between the two longtime rivals.  Senior John Evans opened the scoring with a trey at the 6:35 mark with senior Derek McQuade answering with a deuce for the Titans.  Two foul shots by senior forward Matt Sudo made it 5-2 before junior Eddie Sauer hit a triple to tie the score at 5-5.  Senior Ben Dvorsky scored from under the basket and junior Phil Hoffman, back from an injury, made one of two from the line.  A foul shot by senior Matt Davis and a hoop by Devinney tied the game at 8-8 with 3:08 remaining.  After senior forward Brian Block put back a rebound, Davis drove for a deuce to tie the game again.  Lavallee got open for a long trey, but senior Rich Miller answered for the Titans to tie the game at 13-13.  After Davis put Shaler ahead with a hoop, Evans banked in a long three at the buzzer to give the Tigers a 16-15 advantage after one quarter.

The Tigers scored the first seven points of the second quarter.  After Sudo scored from under the basket on a pass from Tiesi, the senior point guard followed with a jumper.  Lavallee then drained a trey to make it a 23-15 game.  Davis answered with a triple, but the Tigers came back with another run of eight straight points.  Lavallee hit two more treys and senior Greg Dvorsky drove the lane to drop in a left-handed layup as the Tigers extended the margin to 31-18 with 2:05 remaining in the half.  Shaler did not quit, however, as they scored the final seven points of the half behind a triple from Davis, a conventional three-point play by senior Chris Titterington and a foul shot by McQuade.  The Tigers took a 31-25 advantage to the intermission.

Devinney opened the third quarter scoring with a pair of free throws, but Tiesi answered with a jumper to keep the lead at six.  After Devinney came back with a deuce, Ben Dvorsky made two from the line.  Devinney found the range behind the arc to bring the Titans within three at 35-32 with 5:19 left in the quarter.  NA closed out the stanza with a 9-1 run.  Block scored on a putback, Sudo banked in a shot from in close, and Hoffman scored to make it 41-32.  After Sauer hit one of two foul shots, Lavallee drained a long trey with time running out as the Tigers took a 44-33 lead into the final quarter.

After Lavallee hit his sixth triple of the game to give the Tigers their biggest lead at 47-33, the Titans rallied.  Devinney led the charge with a three, a foul shot, and another triple to close the gap to 47-40.  Hoffman hit a free throw, but Davis drained a trey with 3:44 left to cut the lead to 48-44.  With 2:09 remaining, Tiesi dropped in a pair from the line, but Sauer hit a three to cut the lead to 50-47 with 1:35 left.  Down the stretch, it was the Tiger defense and Tiesi's foul shots that gave NA the victory.  After Tiesi made five of six from the line, Devinney scored to cut the margin to 55-49 with just 35.6 on the clock.  Tiesi converted on four more from the stripe before Sauer hit a layup at the buzzer as the Tigers held on for a 59-51 victory.

It was a good victory for the Tigers who broke a two-game losing streak in section play.  NA seemed in control for most of the game, but the Titans would not go away with Devinney keeping them close.  Tiesi ended up making 11 of 14 from the line, eleven of twelve in the fourth quarter.  For his efforts in the game on Senior Night, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Ryan Tiesi as the Player of the Game.

Statistically, the Tigers made 17 of 43 (39.5) from the field, but 8 of 20 from three-point land (40.0%).  At the foul, NA was 17 for 23 (73.9%) led by Tiesi's shooting.  Sudo led all NA rebounders with six.  The Tigers had 14 assists on 17 hoops made!

The win improved the NA section record to 8-2 and kept them one game in front of second-place Fox Chapel.  The overall Tiger record went to 13-5 on the season.  The Tigers will host Seneca Valley on Tuesday night in a Section 3 contest at the Senior High gym.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
