TIGER BOYS TAKE WPIAL TITLE!

Meet Results

The Tiger boys' team won the WPIAL Championship at Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh on Friday with a strong team effort.  The 400 free relay team wrapped things up as NA easily outscored second-place Central Catholic.  Senior Kevin Gasperich contributed a third-place finish in the 500 free while senior Pat Kirsch won silver in the 100 backstroke.

The win by the 400 free relay team gave the Tigers a sweep of all three relay events.  Juniors Brandon Smith, Rob Meyers, and Matt Scherer teamed up with Gasperich to outdistance the field as they won by over 2 1/2 seconds over Central Catholic.  The title was the third WPIAL crown won by NA boys, but the first since 2001.  Coach Kirk "Corky" Semler said: "After three consecutive undefeated dual seasons, the Tiger boy swimmers finally came of age in the big one and swam away with a WPIAL championships."  Coach Semler added, "This year was different!"

The Lady Tigers finished in third place for the second straight season.  Senior Kathy Faingold led the way on day two with a victory in the 100 breaststroke.  The 400 free relay team took fourth place.  The NA girls have won 12 WPIAL titles.

Coach Semler would like to thank " the terrific coaching staff of Patrick Wenzel, Shannon Elliot Tieppo, Celeste Gaber, Dan Goss Adam Jackley and Jess and Brian Toy".  In addition, "we had 8 divers qualify for WPIALs this season which was the most anyone can remember from any school.  Although none made it to the next level, we have many promising young divers that Patti (McClure) has developed which will score big points in years to come."

DAY ONE RESULTS

The Tiger boys' team took a big lead over second-place Central Catholic after one day of competition at the WPIAL Championships at Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh on Thursday.  Both the 200 medley and free relay teams were victorious along with junior Matt Scherer in the 200 free.

In the 200 medley relay, junior Brendan Kirsch, senior Peter Cai, freshman Luis Rodriguez, and senior Pat Kirsch edged Central Catholic to take the gold.  In the 200 free relay, it was the team of junior Rob Meyers, Scherer, junior John Nolan and Brendan Kirsch that finished first ahead of Fox Chapel.  Pat Kirsch was second in the 200 IM, while Rodriguez took fourth in the 100 fly with Meyers capturing fourth in the 50 free.  Junior Brandon Smith was fifth in the 200 IM.

The Lady Tigers are in fourth place after the first day of swimming.  Senior Kathy Faingold took second in the 200 IM to lead NA with the 200 free relay team finishing in fifth place.

The top three in each event qualified for the PIAA Championships to be held at Bucknell University on March 15-18.

(NOTE: The WPIAL went to a new 16-place scoring system this year.  Thanks to the depth of the Tiger teams, many points were scored by team members who finished in the top 16.   To see a complete listing of ALL NA SWIMMERS in the WPIAL finals,
