BUTLER HANDS TIGERS SECOND STRAIGHT SECTION LOSS, 51-46

Box Score

The Butler Golden Tornado opened a 12-point third quarter lead and held on to defeat the Tigers, 51-46, at Butler on Tuesday night.  Senior guard Dino Johnson led NA with 13 points while senior guard Ryan Tiesi added eleven.  Senior Blake Anderson paced Butler with 22 points, including six three-point baskets.

In the first quarter, the teams matched baskets in an evenly played period.  After Anderson hit a three, Tiesi answered with a deuce and senior Ben Dvorsky scored from under the basket to give NA a 4-3 advantage.  Senior Alan Jackson put Butler back on top by one, but Dvorsky dropped in another hoop to make it 6-5.  Tiesi drained a trey to make it 9-5, but Anderson's second three of the quarter cut it to 9-8.  After Johnson scored, it was Anderson again with a triple to even the score at 11-11 after one quarter.

Butler opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run to take a 19-11 lead.  The Tigers came back to score the next ten points to regain the advantage.  Johnson set up senior Brian Block under the basket to cut the lead to 19-13, and senior Dan Lavallee hit two quick threes to tie the score at 19-19.  Johnson gave the Tigers a two-point lead with a pair of foul shots with 1:39 left in the half.  Butler answered with six straight points on a four foul shots and a basket by senior Jade Burka to take a 25-21 advantage.  Johnson drained a trey as time ran out to cut the lead to 25-24 at halftime.

The Tornado came out strong in the third quarter to build a 39-27 lead.  Anderson hit a pair of treys, sophomore Cory Fleeger hit a layup and two foul shots, and senior Noah Hartung and Burka added hoops during the run.  Johnson dropped in his second triple for the only NA points.  With 1:39 left, Tiesi scored on a drive and added a foul shot to cut the margin to 39-30.  Senior Greg Dvorsky hit a jumper to make it 39-32 as time ran out in the period.

The Tigers rallied in the fourth quarter but could never catch the Tornado.  Greg Dvorsky scored his second straight basket to cut the lead to 39-34, but Jackson answered to push the lead back to seven.  Tiesi followed with a trey to cut it to 41-37, and senior John Evans passed to senior Matt Sudo under the hoop for another two to make it 41-39.  Jackson dropped in a pair of foul shots, but Sudo scored again to keep NA within two at 45-43.  After Burka drove for a layup, Johnson hit his third triple of the game to cut the margin to 47-46 with 1:20 remaining.  Hartung made one of two from the line, but the Tigers were unable to score when they had a chance.   After NA got the ball back again, a costly turnover gave it back to Butler with 20 seconds remaining.  Anderson made a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left, and again the Tigers were unable to score.  Hartung's foul shot pushed the final score to 51-46.

Once again, the Tigers were done in at the foul line.  Butler made 15 of 22 while the Tigers shot only three, making all three.  Twenty-one fouls were called on NA and only ten on the Tornado.  Even so, the Tigers had their chances to win but could not make the shots down the stretch.  Statistically, the Tigers shot 18 for 47 from the field (38.3%) but only 7 for 27 from beyond the arc (25.9%).  Sudo led NA in rebounds with 10.

The loss dropped the NA section record to 7-2, the overall mark to 12-5.  The Tigers now have a one-game lead over Fox Chapel in the Section 3 race.  NA will host Shaler on Friday night in the second game of a girl/boy doubleheader.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:45 pm.

NEW CASTLE KNOCKS OFF TIGERS, 66-51, IN OVERTIME

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The New Castle Red Hurricanes used a 15-0 run in overtime to end the Tigers' unbeaten record in section play with a 66-51 victory at the Senior High gym on Friday night.  Senior Ryan Tiesi had 17 points to pace NA while senior Matt Sudo added ten.  Junior Anthony Harvey netted 28 points to pace the 'Canes.

The game was close from the outset with the lead going back and forth.  The Tigers opened quickly outscoring NC, 8-2, in the early going.  After senior Ben Dvorsky gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead, Tiesi hit the first of five threes to push the lead to 5-0.  Harvey's first hoop cut it to 5-2, but a basket by senior John Evans and a foul shot by Dvorsky pushed the margin to 8-2.  Sophomore Nick Colella drained a trey, junior point guard Dareese Henderson made one of two from the line, and senior Spencer Lane scored to bring the 'Canes even at 8-8 with 1:56 left.  Senior Brian Block made two foul shots, but a three by senior Aaron Keys gave the 'Canes their first lead at 11-10.  Sudo's putback gave the lead back to NA, and the first quarter ended with the Tigers holding a 12-11 lead.

The teams exchanged hoops throughout the second quarter.  After Harvey put NC ahead, Sudo scored from the paint to make it 14-13 NA.  Colella scored again, but Tiesi answered to keep the Tigers ahead by one.  Senior Greg Dvorsky drained a trey from the corner to push the lead to 19-15 at the 5:34 mark.  Colella and Anthony hit back-to-back threes to put NC back ahead, 21-19.  Tiesi followed with yet another trey, but Lane came back with a deuce to give NC a 23-22 advantage.  Tiesi responded with another trey to push the Tigers on top, 25-23, and Sudo added another hoop from short range to make it 27-23.  After a Colella basket and a foul shot by Lane, senior Dan Lavallee got free for a triple to extend the lead to 30-26.  Harvey made a pair of foul shots with 11.3 remaining in the half, but the Tigers took a 30-28 lead to the intermission.

Early in the third quarter, Harvey scored six points with Sudo coming back for two for the Tigers, but the 'Canes moved on top, 34-32.  Evans followed with a trey to give NA the lead back, but Lane answered with a triple from the right corner to make it 37-35.  Tiesi came back again with another triple to give the Tigers a 38-37 advantage.  Lane made a pair of free throws and Harvey hit a driving runner to put NC on top, 41-38.  Sudo's hoop cut the lead to one before Lane scored again to give the 'Canes a three-point lead with 1:23 on the clock.  Junior Jon Masuga came off the NA bench to hit a three-pointer and tie the score at 43-43.  Neither team scored again in the quarter.

Both teams slowed the pace in the fourth quarter and points were hard to come by.  After Harvey scored to put NC ahead, Tiesi drained his fifth trey of the game to make it 46-45 in NA's favor.  Lane answered with a short jumper to push NC on top by one.  Senior Dino Johnson scored on a drive, but missed the foul shot as the Tigers took a 48-47 lead.  Harvey came back to drop in a pair of free throws to give the lead back to the 'Canes at 49-48.  Johnson answered with a three to once again give NA the lead at 51-48 with 2:54 remaining.  The Tigers would not score again.  Harvey came back to tie the game at the 1:40 mark.  After an NA miss, New Castle ran the clock down to 40 seconds.  After a time out, Harvey drove the baseline but lost the ball.  The Tigers got over mid-court and called a time out with 20.8 on the clock.  NA worked for the final shot but Tiesi's attempt hit the rim and fell off.  The game went to overtime tied at 51-51.

The overtime belonged to New Castle.  Harvey scored with 3:37 left to make it 53-51.  After Harvey made one of two from the line, the Tigers could not convert.  New Castle went into a slowdown offense, but Colella found a seam and scored on a driving layup to extend the lead to 56-51 with 1:30 left.  The Tigers continued to miss and had to foul down the stretch.  New Castle made eight of nine from the line, and Henderson added a layup as the 'Canes went on to a 66-51 victory.

Statistically, it was not a great shooting night for the Tigers as they made only 19 of 50 for 38.0%.  For beyond the arc, NA was 10 of 30 (33.3%).  The Tigers shot only 6 foul shots and made 3 while New Castle made 17 of 23 from the line.  Suudo pulled down seven rebounds to lead the team.

It was a great effort by both teams, and the fans in Wexford were treated to an exciting high school basketball game.  The Tigers made 10 from behind the arc to stay in the contest and had a realistic chance to win at the end of regulation.  Once New Castle got the lead in overtime, however, the Tigers were unable to answer.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Ryan Tiesi as the Player of the Game.

With the loss, the Tigers' section record fell to 7-1, the overall mark to 12-4 on the season.  The Tigers will travel to Butler to meet the Tornado in a section contest on Tuesday night.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

The Tigers took a 12-10 lead after one quarter, but the Titans came back to lead, 24-21, at the intermission.  The big third quarter boosted NA to a 35-27 lead after three quarters.  NA held off Shaler in the final period to post the key section victory.

TIGERS CRUSH NORTH HILLS, 82-48, BEHIND LAVALLEE'S 25 POINTS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers unleashed a long range attack that featured 14 three-point baskets on their way to an easy 82-48 victory over rival North Hills at the Senior High gym on Friday night.  Senior guard Dan Lavallee dropped in 25 points, including seven from behind the arc, as the Tigers won their eighth straight.  Senior point guard Ryan Tiesi added 18 points, senior forward Matt Sudo 12, and junior guard Jon Masuga eleven off the NA bench.

The Tigers took control of the game from the outset, outscoring North Hills, 20-4, in the first 4:45 of the game.  Tiesi gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead, and NA never looked back.  After Lavallee dropped in two of three from the line, senior Joe O'Malley drove the length of the floor to cut the margin to 4-2.  Lavallee and the three-ball then took over as the NA senior drained a pair of treys to push the lead to 10-2.  After a NH time out, Tiesi and senior Dino Johnson scored quick hoops to make it 14-2 before freshman Drew Faletta hit a jumper.  Tiesi and Lavallee followed with treys and the rout was on.  Sophomore Dante Anglin and Faletta managed to hit hoops before the end of the quarter, but the Tigers took a commanding 20-8 lead into the second stanza.

Senior John Evans opened the scoring in the second quarter with an acrobatic reverse layup to make it 22-8.  After C.J. Wink scored for the Indians, Tiesi drained another trey to make it 25-10.  Andrew Monahan answered with a trey, but the Tigers stayed hot behind the arc.  Lavallee hit two more threes, and Sudo added a basket and two free throws as the Tigers increased the margin to 38-20 at halftime.

The Tigers continued to dominate in the third quarter, outscoring the Indians, 18-5.  Lavallee hit two more triples, Tiesi had a three and a traditional three-point play, Sudo added four more points and Evans a basket as the Tigers led, 56-29, after three quarters.

Both coaches substituted liberally in the fourth quarter as NA continued to pour it on.  A highlight of the period came when Masuga hit three triples and added a hoop for a total of eleven fourth-quarter points.  Sudo scored twice, Johnson stole two passes and scored each time, senior Brian Block hit a short banker, and junior Adam Neugebauer drained a trey from the corner.  One bright spot for North Hills was the play of sophomore Anglin who scored 12 points in the final period including a dunk at the buzzer.  It was all NA, however, as the Tigers won going away, 82-48.

It was an impressive win for the Tigers over a North Hills team that had been playing better in recent weeks.  For his outstanding shooting, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Dan Lavallee as the Player of the Game.

The win kept NA undefeated in section with a 6-0 record and improved their overall mark to 11-3.  The Tigers will travel to Shaler on Tuesday to meet the second-place Titans who trail NA by two games.  Game time is scheduled for 8:00 pm.

The Foxes took a 16-12 lead after one quarter, but the Tigers came back to cut the margin to one at 28-27 at halftime.  In the third quarter, NA jumped ahead, outscoring the Foxes by six, as they took a 46-41 advantage into the final period.  Fox Chapel rallied but the Tigers held on for a one-point victory.

The Tigers regained their shooting touch against the Foxes.  After shooting only 34% against Pine-Richland, NA dropped in 23 for 48 for a 47.9%.  From three-point land, the Tigers were 5 for 13 (38.5%).  From the foul line, the Tigers converted on 11 of 14 (78.6%).  Johnson led the rebounding effort with 6 while senior forward Matt Sudo pulled down five.

TIGERS RALLY TO DOWN PINE-RICHLAND, 47-44,
 IN OVERTIME

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior Dino Johnson came off the NA bench to score 14 points, including a three-pointer to tie the game as time ran out in regulation, to spark the Tigers to a 47-44 come from behind overtime victory over Pine-Richland at the Senior High gym on Friday night.  Senior point guard Ryan Tiesi had 19 points to lead NA to their sixth straight victory and keep them unbeaten in section play.

Both teams started slowly in what would become an intense defensive struggle.  NA shot poorly in the first quarter and found themselves trailing, 9-7.  Senior Dan Lavallee drained a trey for the Tigers who also got hoops from Tiesi and senior forward Matt Sudo.  In the second quarter, neither side was able to gain much of an advantage as defense again was dominant.  Tiesi came alive with a pair of baskets and Johnson dropped in a triple, but the Tigers still trailed at halftime, 19-18.  Matt Blocki tallied six points for the taller Rams.

Things got worse for the Tigers in the third quarter as they scored only four points on two hoops by Tiesi.  The Rams took control of the game and piled up a ten-point lead, 32-22, as the quarter ended.  NA regrouped in the fourth quarter, however, utilizing full court pressure and finally getting a few shots to drop.  The Tiger defense held the Rams to just two field goals in the quarter while Tiesi was hitting on four two-pointers with Johnson adding a pair of deuces.  Pine-Richland could have won the game at the foul line but made only four of 14 from the stripe.  With time running out and the Rams up by three, Johnson launched a long three that hit the rim, went straight up in the air, and dropped through to send the game to overtime.

The Tigers took control of the game early in the overtime when senior John Evans put them up by two at 42-40.  Six-eight Eric Duerr came back to tie the game, but NA foul shooting down the stretch gained the victory.  Johnson made four of four and Tiesi added one of two to give NA a 47-42 lead with a few seconds left.  Lombardi's consolation hoop made the final score, 47-44, as the Tigers escaped with an important section victory.

The foul line was key for NA as they converted 8 of 10 from the stripe.  The Rams, on the other hand, were only 11 of 30 from the foul line.  Poor shooting from the field hurt NA as they converted only 18 for 53 for 34.0% including just 3 of 18 from beyond the arc.

With the win and Fox Chapel's loss to New Castle, the Tigers find themselves alone in first place in Section 3 with a 4-0 section record.  The victory also improved their overall mark to 9-3 on the season.  The Tigers will travel to Fox Chapel on Tuesday night for a key Section 3 matchup.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

It was a close game until the final period when the Tigers pulled away.  NA led, 12-11, after one quarter and extended the margin to 26-24 at halftime.  Seneca came back to tie the score at 33-33 after three quarters of play.  A big 21-9 advantage in the final quarter secured the win for the Tigers.

Statistically, the Tiger shooting was down a little from the season average.  NA made 19 of 50 from the field for 38.0%, but were only 6 of 25 from beyond the arc (24.0%).   From the foul line, the Tigers made 10 of 17 fro 58.8%.  Senior Ben Dvorsky led the Tigers on the boards, pulling down six rebounds.
