TIGERS UPEND NEW CASTLE, 59-58

Game Statistics

The Tigers used a big third quarter to defeat the New Castle Red Hurricanes, 59-58, at New Castle in the Section 3 opener on Friday night.  Senior Matt Sudo led the Tigers with 18 points while senior Dan Lavalle added 16 and senior point guard Ryan Tiesi 12.  The Tigers outscored the 'Canes, 19-12, in the third quarter and held on for the victory.  Senior Anthony Harvey scored 25 points to pace the 'Canes.

The game was close throughout the first half as the Tigers took a 15-14 lead after one quarter and held a one-point margin, 27-26, at halftime.  After building a 46-38 lead after three quarters, the Tigers saw New Castle rally in the final period.  Down the stretch, Harvey hit a three to cut the lead to 58-56 with less than a minute to play.  Senior guard John Evans made one of two from the foul line to give NA a three-point lead with 25 seconds remaining.  New Castle had two chances at a three-point basket in the final seconds but missed both, and the Tigers came home with a big road victory. On Harvey's miss, Lane put in the rebound at the buzzer but it left New Castle one short.

Statistically, the Tigers shot an impressive 43.8% from the field, making 21 of 48.  From beyond the arc, NA was just 5 for 25 (20.0%).  At the line, the Tigers made 12 of 17, including key foul shots down the stretch to secure the victory.

HEMPFIELD EDGES TIGERS, 54-53

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

A late Tiger rally fell short as Hempfield upset the Tigers, 54-53, at the Senior High gym on Monday night.  Senior Ryan Tiesi scored a game high 22 points to pace NA while senior guard Dan Lavallee added 15 on five 3-pointers.  Senior forward Pat Linhart had 21 points for the winning Spartans.

Both teams started slowly with senior forward Matt Sudo putting the Tigers ahead, 2-0, on a layup at the 6:10 mark.  A foul shot by senior Jim Roemer and a jump shot by senior Pat Stoner gave Hempfield their first lead of the game, 3-2.  Sudo scored again for NA but Pat Stoner answered with a three to put the Spartans up, 6-4, with 3:32 remaining in the quarter.  Lavallee hit the first of his treys less than a minute later as NA moved on top, 7-6.  Junior Tyler Stoner answered with a three of his own before Sudo's third hoop of the period tied the game at 9-9.  Lavallee hit another long triple with 28.5 left as the Tigers took a 12-9 lead after one quarter of play.

The teams matched baskets early in the second quarter as the lead went back and forth.  Linhart came off the Hempfield bench to hit a pair of foul shots and a driving layup to make it a 13-12 Spartan lead.  Tiesi answered with a jumper, but senior Joel Thompson matched him with a short banker to keep Hempfield ahead, 15-14.  After senior Brian Block hit from under the basket, the Spartans went on a 7-0 run behind a three-point play from Linhart, a basket by Tyler Stoner, and a pair of free throws by Roemer.  Senior Ben Dvorsky cut the lead to 22-18 with a hoop at the 1:37 mark, but Linhart's two foul shots pushed the lead back to six at 24-18.  Tiesi was able to hit a trey at the buzzer to cut the lead to three as Hempfield took a 24-21 advantage to the intermission.

The third quarter belonged to Hempfield.  Using an aggressive man-to-man defense, the Spartans forced a number of NA turnovers as they built a 43-31 lead.  After Sudo converted on one of two from the stripe, Linhart got free for a pair of baskets to extend the lead to 28-22.  Tiesi answered with his second three of the game, but Linhart came back with a deuce and Pat Stoner a trey as they lead went to 33-25 with 4:04 remaining in the period.  Senior Dino Johnson dropped in one of two from the foul line and Sudo scored again to cut the margin to 33-28.  The Spartans would not be denied, however, as senior point guard Jason DiBiasi drained a trey and Linhart scored in the paint as the lead went to ten at 38-28.  Tiesi came back to hit another three, but Roemer matched him with a trey from the corner.  Tyler Stoner's basket made it 43-31 with 1:09 left.  Neither team could score for the remainder of the quarter as Hempfield took a twelve-point lead into the final stanza.

The Tigers put together a furious rally in the fourth quarter but came up a point short.  Using a full court press, the Tigers got several steals early.  Hoops by Tiesi, Ben Dvorsky, and a three by Lavallee cut the lead to 43-38 just 1:45 into the quarter.  After a Hempfield time out, Linhart scored to slow the Tigers and make it a 45-38 game.  NA continued to press and Tiesi hit a long triple and a layup to cut the lead to 45-43 at the 3:02 mark.  Hempfield then began a march to the foul line.  Thompson made two and Linhart two more to push the lead to 49-43 with 1:59 on the clock.  A three by Lavallee cut the lead to 49-46 with 1:47 left as the Tigers continued to press.  Once again, the Spartans answered from the foul line as Pat Stoner made two and Thompson added two more to push the margin to 53-46 with just 23.3 on the clock.  Lavallee then banked in a long three to cut the lead to 53-51 with just 13 seconds on the clock.  NA was forced to foul senior Anthony Constantine who made one of two.  Tiesi came back to make a driving layup but time ran out as the Spartans held on for a 54-53 victory.

It was a tough loss for the Tigers who ended up 21 field goals to just 16 for Hempfield.  The home court advantage did not hold up at the foul line where the Spartans were 17 for 24 and the Tigers only 2 for 6.  NA was 21 for 46 (45.7%) from the field and 9 for 21 (42.9%) from beyond the arc.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Ryan Tiesi as the Player of the Game.

The loss dropped the NA non-section record to 3-3 as they get ready for the opening of the section season on Friday night.  The Tigers will travel to New Castle on Friday for a 7:30 pm section opener.

LEBO TOPS TIGERS AGAIN, 60-55

It was closer, but the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils defeated the Tigers for the second time in five days, 60-55, to win the championship of the Penn Hills Rotary Classic on Saturday night.  Senior Ryan Tiesi dropped in 20 points to pace NA but the Tigers could not hold a fourth quarter lead.

After Mt. Lebanon took a 12-7 lead after one quarter, the Blue Devils increased the margin to 32-24 at halftime.  A third quarter rally put the Tigers ahead, 42-39, going into the final period.  Lebo was able to outscore the Tigers by eight in the final period to win by five.  The Tigers did a good job of slowing 6-6 junior center Andrew Devlin, keeping him to just 12 points.  The Blue Devil guards, however, picked up the slack.  Senior Evan Stokar and sophomore Shane Phillips dropped in 15 each to pace Lebo.

With the loss, the Tigers dropped to 3-2 in non-section play. The Tigers will return home on Monday night to face Hempfield in a final non-section contest on NABA Night.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm.

TIGERS TRIPLE MONESSEN, 79-43

Good outside shooting by the Tigers led them to an easy 79-43 victory over Monessen in the first round of the Penn Hills Rotary Classic on Friday night.  Senior Dan Lavallee scored 17 points, including five treys, to pace NA while senior John Evans added 12 on four three-pointers.  Senior Matt Sudo and junior Phil Hoffman each scored 12 points as they Tigers took an early lead and never looked back.

The Tigers jumped off to a 17-9 lead after one quarter and extended the margin to 34-15 at the intermission.  In the third quarter, NA outscored the Greyhounds, 26-14, and the rout was on as the Tigers went on to the 79-43 victory.

With the win, the Tigers improved their non-section record to 3-1.  NA will try to gain a measure of revenge when they meet Mt. Lebanon for the tournament championship tonight with game time scheduled for 7:30 pm.

LEBO COMEBACK TOPS
TIGERS, 64-54

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

After the Tigers led for most of the first half, Mt. Lebanon used a strong second half to hand the Tigers their first loss of the season, 64-54, in the home opener at the Senior High gym on Tuesday night.  Senior Dan Lavallee led NA with 17 points, including five treys, with senior guard Ryan Tiesi adding nine.  Junior center Andrew Devlin dropped in 24 points to pace Lebo.

Mt. Lebanon jumped on top early, 5-0, on a basket inside and a three-point play by Devlin.  The Tigers came back quickly, however, as Tiesi scored and Lavallee hit a long trey to tie the game at 5-5 at the 6:17 mark.  After a three-point basket by senior Adam Potter and a foul shot by Devlin, senior Brian Block scored from under the hoop to cut the deficit to 9-7.  Junior Ryan Lang answered with a triple, but a fast break layup by senior Matt Sudo and a second trey by Lavallee cut the margin to 14-12.  Lavallee continued to hit from the outside and gave NA their first lead with yet another three-pointer at the 1:36 mark.  Lavallee wasn't finished and drained his fourth triple of the quarter from long range to push the lead to 18-14 with 1:05 left in the period.  Devlin came back to score from under the basket, but the Tigers took an 18-16 lead into the second quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Lang tied the game at 18-18.  Sophomore guard Shane Philips was fouled attempting a three-point basket and made two of three from the line to put Lebo back on top, 20-18.  NA then went on a 14-3 run to regain the lead.  After Tiesi tied the game on a jumper, the Tiger point guard converted a three-point play to put NA ahead, 23-20.  Senior Ben Dvorsky scored on a feed from Block to make it 25-20 before a Devlin hoop and a foul shot by senior Evan Stokar cut the margin to 25-23.  Baskets by Dvorsky and Block pushed the lead to 29-23, and a trey by junior Jon Masuga off the NA bench extended the margin to 32-23 with 2:14 remaining in the half.  Devlin then led a Lebo comeback with a pair of hoops to make it 32-27 with 1:00 left.  The Tigers then held the ball hoping to get off the last shot in the period.  A technical foul was called on the NA bench, however, with just 11.8 seconds on the clock.  Phillips dropped in a pair of foul shots and Potter hit a baseline jumper at the buzzer as Lebo cut the NA lead to 32-31 at the intermission.

The game went back and forth for most of the third quarter.  After Tiesi scored just 24 seconds into the quarter, Lang tied the game at 34 with a long three.  Just seconds later after a Blue Devil steal, Lang drained another trey to put Lebo ahead, 37-34.  Sudo's hoop cut the lead to 37-36, and Block scored from down low to put the Tigers back on top, 38-37, with 4:18 left in the quarter.  A triple by Potter gave Lebo the lead once again, 40-38, before Dvorsky answered to tie the game at 40.  Lebo then went on a 9-3 run at the end of the quarter.  After Stoker dropped in a pair of foul shots, it was Devlin who did the rest of the damage with three baskets and a foul shot.  A foul shot by senior Nick Henderson and a basket by junior Phil Hoffman with 34 seconds left the lead at 49-43 as the third quarter ended.

The Tigers rallied to cut the lead to one midway through the final quarter.  After Long scored to make it 51-43, Sudo answered with a hoop to cut the margin to 51-45.  Hoffman was able to get free for a basket, and Lavallee drained a trey after an NA steal made it a 51-50 game with 5:39 left.  It would be the closest the Tigers would get.  A basket by Stokar and one of two from the line by Devlin pushed the lead back to 54-50.  After several Tiger misses, Stokar made two foul shots to make it 56-50.  Senior John Evans scored on a fast break to cut it to 56-52 with 1:18 remaining.  The Tigers were forced to foul down the stretch as Mt. Lebanon made six of eight from the line, and senior Nate Gannon added a field goal as Lebo went on to win, 64-54.

It was a good effort by the Tigers who fell short in the late moments of the last quarter.  NA actually made more field goals than Mt. Lebanon, 22-20, but Lebo prevailed at the foul line.  The Blue Devils converted on 19 of 29 from the stripe while the Tigers were four for six.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Dan Lavallee as the Player of the Game.

The loss dropped the NA non-section record to 2-1 in the early season.  The Tigers will play again on Friday night when they meet Monessen in the first round of the Penn Hills Rotary Tournament.  Game time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
