WALDSCHMIDT'S OT GOAL WINS TITLE FOR NA IN BETHEL PARK TOURNAMENT

Junior Wes Waldschmidt scored just ten seconds into overtime to give the Tigers a 2-1 victory over host Bethel Park in the final of the Bethel Park Martin Luther King Tournament on Sunday afternoon.  NA had defeated Dublin (OH), 5-2, earlier in the day to advance to the final.

It was a defensive battle from the start as neither team was able to score in the first period.  The Tigers outshot Bethel, 7-6, in the opening stanza.  In the second period, senior Chris Gilson finally broke through on an assist from junior Dan Gaertner at the 1:26 mark to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead after two periods of play.

The Tiger defense held off the Blackhawks until late in the third period when Jason Hosko scored with 2:19 remaining to send the game into overtime.  Waldschmidt's game winner came right after the initial faceoff of the overtime period. Sophomore Josh Herbert got the assist on the winning goal.   Junior Adam Lutty was tough in goal again for the Tigers allowing just one goal on 17 Bethel Park shots.  The Tigers were held to 18 shots on goal.  NA was penalized six times for twelve minutes while the host Blackhawks were in the box four times for eight minutes.

SEMIFINALS:  NORTH ALLEGHENY - 5  DUBLIN - 2

The Tigers fell behind, 2-0, early but rallied to beat Dublin for the second time, 5-3, in the semifinals.  Senior forward Chris Simanic scored twice and added an assist while senior Chris Gilson recorded a goal and two assists.

The Dublin Shamrocks came ready to play and jumped ahead, 2-0, in the first 5:27 of the game behind goals by Matt Kirstein and Michael Strine.  The Tigers rallied, however, to get back in the game.  Junior defenseman Brad Schwartzmier made it 2-1 at the 6:46 mark, and senior defenseman Ian McGlumphy tied the game at 2-2 on assists from Gilson and junior Matt Lancaster with 4:32 remaining in the period.  Gilson gave NA the lead for good with a late goal with just 1:18 left in the period on an assist from junior Wes Waldschmidt.  The Tigers took a 3-2 advantage to the first intermission.

Simanic extended the lead with a pair of second period goals, both assisted by Gilson, as NA increased the margin to 5-2 after two periods.  Junior Dan Gaertner also picked up an assist on the second goal.   The Tigers held off the Shamrocks the rest of the way to pick up the victory and move into the final.  Dublin outshot NA, 34-32, but junior Adam Lutty was tough in the net.  In a clean game, Dublin was penalized three times for six minutes while the Tigers had a single penalty for two minutes.

SATURDAY'S GAMES

The Tigers defeated the Carmel (IN) Icehounds, 8-3, in first round action in the Bethel Park Martin Luther King Tournament on Saturday at Bladerunners in Bethel Park.  Junior Matt Lancaster had the hat trick to pace the Tigers.  Senior Chris Simanic had two goals and two assists while junior Wes Waldschmidt added two assists.

In the first period, Lancaster opened the scoring on assists from Waldschmidt and sophomore Josh Herbert at the 9:30 mark.  Simanic made it 2-0 with a goal just 1:30 before the end of the period.  The Tigers took a two-goal lead into the second period.  Early in the second period, junior Dan Gaertner made it 3-0, and it looked like the Tigers were on their way to an easy victory.  The Icehounds came back, however, to score a pair of goals by Jamie O'Conner and Andy Minnick to cut the deficit to 3-2 after two periods of play.

The Tigers scored the next three goals to take control of the game.  Senior defenseman Ian McGlumphy gave NA a 4-2 lead with a goal just 1:15 into the final period.  Senior Chris Gilson extended the lead to 5-2 at the 9:57 mark.  Simanic's second goal pushed the margin to 6-2 just 53 seconds later.  After Danny Graham scored by Carmel, Lancaster came back to score a pair of goals as the Tigers went on to an 8-3 victory.

The Tigers outshot Carmel, 22-17.  Junior goalie Adam Lutty played most of the game, but freshman Ridge Foster saw some action in the third period.  Carmel was penalized 15 times for 65 minutes while the Tigers spent 10 minutes in the box on 5 penalties.

The Tigers knocked off Dublin (OH), 5-2,  later in the day and will face the Ohio team again this morning in the semifinals.  In the other semifinal, Bethel Park will play St. Ignatius (OH).  The game time for the NA game is scheduled for 11:40 am.

FRIDAY'S GAME - NA - 6  ST. IGNATIUS - 0

Junior goalie Adam Lutty stopped all 27 shots he faced to lead the Tigers to a 5-0 victory over St. Ignatius from Cleveland in the first round of the Bethel Park Martin Luther King Tournament on Friday night.  Junior Wes Waldschmidt scored twice and had an assist to pace the Tigers.

After neither team could score for most of the first period, junior Dan Gaertner put NA on top on an assist from senior Chris Simanic with 3:33 remaining in the period.  The Tigers took a 1-0 advantage to the first intermission.

The Tigers put the game away in the second period with three goals.  Waldschmidt tallied his first goal unassisted just 46 seconds into the period to give NA a 2-0 lead.  Midway through the stanza, sophomore Josh Herbert found the net with junior Matt Lancaster and Lutty assisting to make it a 3-0 game with 8:29 remaining in the period.  Lancaster pushed the margin to 4-0 with a goal with just 1:34 left as the Tigers took a four-goal lead into the final period.

Waldschmidt scored his second goal with 1:24 left in the game to put the finishing touches on the 5-0 shutout victory.  St. Ignatius outshot the Tigers, 27-22, but Lutty was there to preserve the victory.  In a well-played game, each team was penalized twice for four minutes.

Tournament play continues today as the Tigers meet Carmel this morning at 9:10 am and Dublin this afternoon at 2:30 in preliminary round action.

TIGERS DOMINATE PLUM IN 5-0 SHUTOUT

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Five different Tigers scored as NA blanked Plum, 5-0, at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Thursday night.  Senior Chris Simanic and sophomore Josh Herbert recorded a goal and an assist each, and senior defenseman Paul Dittrich posted three assists as the Tigers won their eleventh straight PIHL game.

The Tigers dominated play early but could not score against Plum goalie John Bronder.  Herbert had three consecutive shots with 10:00 minutes remaining, but could not beat Bronder.  A minute later, Jonathan Smith came back for the Mustangs but was stopped by sophomore Tiger netminder Max Richards.  It was the only shot of the period by Plum.  With 7:45 remaining, Simanic broke in alone, but Bronder again was able to make the save.  Finally, with 5:54 left, Dittrich sent Herbert away on a breakaway and the Tiger sophomore deked Bronder out of the net and slid the puck behind him to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.  A minute later, Matt Giunta had a chance for Plum, but his shot from in front of the goal was stopped by the Tiger defense.  With 40 seconds remaining in the period, senior forward Joe Camut shoveled in a rebound from the right side to extend the lead to 2-0 with assists going to senior Alan Halapin and Simanic.  The period ended with NA outshooting Plum, 23-1, and leading 2-0.

In the second period, the Tigers continued to pressure the Mustang goal.  With 8:29 remaining, Simanic made a great individual play, skating in from the left side and beating Bronder high over his left shoulder to make it a 3-0 game.  NA outshot Plum, 11-1, in the period and took a three-goal lead into the final period.  Junior Adam Lutty took over in goal for Richards and played the remainder of the game.

Early in the third period, sophomore defenseman Tyson Stupy was sent off for tripping.  The NA defense rose to the occasion with some good efforts, particularly by senior forward Chris Gilson who blocked two shots.  After the second block, Gilson got free on a breakaway and beat Bronder cleanly to open a 4-0 Tiger lead at the 11:41 mark.  Less than a minute later, junior forward Wes Waldschmidt had a great chance from in front of the goal but Bronder made the save.  With 7:30 remaining, Herbert got loose in front of the goal, but Bronder made two sparkling saves from point blank range.  A little over a minute later, Waldschmidt skated in from the left side and scored the fifth NA goal with 6;17 left in the game.  Neither team scored for the remainder of the contest as the Tigers put away a 5-0 victory.

It was a dominating performance in every way as the Tigers outshot Plum, 52-6.  Only the tough goaltending of Bronder kept the score from going higher.   For his offensive work in the contest, sophomore Josh Herbert was named the Player of the Game by the North Allegheny Sports Network.

With the win, the Tigers improved their PIHL record to 13-1 and increased their lead in the North Division to nine points over second-place Fox Chapel.  NA will be back in action again tonight when they play St. Ignatius in the Bethel Park Martin Luther King Tournament.  Game time at Bladerunners in Bethel Park is scheduled for 8:00 pm.

THIRD PERIOD THE DIFFFERENCE AS TIGERS
UPEND UPPER ST. CLAIR, 3-1

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers scored twice in the third period to break a 1-1 tie as they defeated the Upper St. Clair Panthers, 3-1, at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night.  Senior defenseman Paul Dittrich scored the game winner with junior forward Wes Waldschmidt adding an insurance goal with seconds remaining.  Junior Matt Lancaster tallied the first NA goal.

The Tigers dominated play in the first period but could not beat USC goalie Kevin Gorder.  Lancaster had two chances in the first period but Gorder stopped both.  Later in the period, senior forward Alan Halapin had a great chance from right in front of the goal on an NA power play but again Gorder made the save.  Late in the period, senior forward Joe Camut sent a rebound toward the USC goal but Gorder was there to cover up on the goal line.  The first period ended scoreless.

Upper St. Clair applied pressure early in the second period, but NA sophomore goalie Max Richards kept the Panthers off the board with two key saves.  With the Tigers holding a 4-3 power play advantage, Waldschmidt skated in from the right side and Lancaster tipped in his shot to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead on the power play goal at the 9:58 mark of the period.  The Panthers came back with pressure on the NA goal that resulted in a Tiger penalty.  USC made the power play pay off when senior forward Mike Penkrot set up Jomo Lohman for the tying goal with 6:20 remaining in the period.  Halapin had a chance from the left side as time ran out, but Gorder made the save as the teams went to the second intermission tied at 1-1.

The third period was a close checking defensive struggle.  The Tigers took the lead on yet another power play goal when Dittrich got a stick on Waldschmidt's shot from the left point.   The goal gave NA a 2-1 advantage with 11:31 on the clock.  For the remainder of the period, the Tiger defense, headed up by Dittrich and senior Ian McGlumphy, helped Richards keep the one-goal lead.  With 1:10 remaining, Dittrich was sent off for a minor penalty.  USC pulled goalie Gorder and had a two-man advantage for the remainder of the game.  The NA defense stood tall with senior Chris Simanic making a key block of a USC shot from the point with the point rolling deep into USC territory with 30 seconds left.  Finally, Waldschmidt made a great individual play to put the game away.  After another NA blocked shot, Waldschmidt tracked down the puck just over the Panther blue line.  The Tiger forward went behind the net and tucked in an insurance goal with just six seconds left.  NA let the remaining time run out as the picked up a hard-fought 3-1 victory.

It was a well-played intense game with all goals coming on special teams.  There were three power play tallies and one shorthanded empty net goal as the Tigers were able to hold off the Panthers for most of the game.  Richards was tough in the net for the Tigers when he had to be.  For his overall play, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Wes Waldschmidt as the Player of the Game.

The victory was the tenth straight in PIHL play for the Tigers as they opened a seven-point lead over second-place Fox Chapel in the North Division.  With the win, NA improved their league mark to 12-1.  The Tigers will host Plum tomorrow night at Bladerunners in Warrendale.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:50 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 8:00 pm.

TIGERS MASTER McDOWELL, 3-1

Senior Alan Halapin scored a pair of goals to lead the Tigers to a tough 3-1 victory over McDowell at Bladerunners  in Warrendale on Friday night.  Freshman Dylan Rohar scored the third NA goal as the Tigers won their ninth straight PIHL contest.

Neither team scored in the first period, althought the Tigers outshot the Trojans, 10-3.  Late in the period, however, McDowell was sent off on a penalty that carried over into the second period.  Halapin made the Trojans pay when he scored on a rebound with just 3 seconds remaining on the power play to give NA a 1-0 advantage.  Later in the period, Rohar skated in alone from center ice on McDowell goalie John Cleary who made the save.  Rohar stayed with the play, however, and poked in his own rebound to give NA a 2-0 lead with 9:04 remaining in the period.  Andy Kohler came back to score for McDowell on a shot over the shoulder of sophomore NA goalie Max Richards to cut the lead to 2-1 at the 6:10 mark.

The game remained a one-goal contest until Halapin scored an insurance goal with 8:15 left in the game.  Richards and the NA defense kept McDowell off the board for the remainder of the game to secure the 3-1 victory.  Senior forward Chris Simanic recorded two assists for NA in a game that saw the Tigers outshoot the Trojans, 31-12.  McDowell was whistled for eight penalties good for 16 minutes while NA was sent of four times for eight minutes.

With the win, the Tigers increased their lead to seven points over second place Fox Chapel as they improved the division record to 11-1-0.

TIGERS WIN SCHOLASTIC SHOWCASE FOR THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR

Goals by four different Tigers made the difference as NA defeated Bethel Park, 4-2, in the final of the Scholastic Showcase on Saturday afternoon.  Seniors Alan Halapin, Chris Simanic, Chris Gilson, and junior Dan Gaertner led the way as NA never trailed in the contest.

The Tigers jumped off to a quick 1-0 lead when Halapin scored a power play goal at the 11:16 mark on a pass from junior Wes Waldschmidt.  NA made it 2-0 less than three minutes later when senior defenseman Ian McGlumphy set up Gaertner in front of the goal.  The Blackhawks came back to cut the margin to 2-1 on Graham Cohen's rebound with 1:20 left in the period.  NA took a 2-1 advantage into the second intermission.

In the second period, the Tigers continued to pressure the Bethel goal.  Two quick goals gave NA control of the game.  Simanic scored on an assist from senior defenseman Paul Dittrich to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead at the 10:31 mark.  A little over two minutes later, Gilson made it 4-1 on assists from senior defenseman Chris Korenoski and Halapin.  Sophomore goalie Max Richards and the NA defense kept Bethel off the board for the remainder of the period as the Tigers took a 4-1 lead into the final period.

Bethel Park mounted a rally in the final period, outshooting NA, 12-5, but could score only one goal.  Bryan Brown scored on a power play early in the period to cut the margin to 4-2, but the Tigers were able to stop any further scoring by the Blackhawks.  NA outshot Bethel Park, 23-16, on the game.  The Tigers were penalized five times for 10 minutes while the Blackhawks were sent off only twice for two minutes.

With the win, the Tigers completed their three-peat.  Junior Wes Waldschmidt was named the R.J. Umberger Award given to the MVP of the tournament.  Named to the Director's Dozen All-Tournament Team were sophomore goalie Max Richards, senior defenseman Paul Dittrich and senior forward Chris Simanic.

NORWIN NO MATCH FOR TIGERS
IN 9-0 SHUTOUT

The Tigers overwhelmed the Norwin Knights, 9-0, at the Center Ice arena in Delmont on Thursday night in a PIHL contest.  Senior Chris Simanic and junior Dan Gaertner scored two goals each to lead the Tigers.  Seniors Paul Dittrich, Alan Halapin, and Chris Gilson along with junior Wes Waldschmidt also scored for the Tigers.  Junior forward Nick Vaglia tallied his first goal as a varsity player as NA won their sixth straight game.

Although the Tigers dominated play in the first period, outshooting the Knights, 11-3, they could not score as the period ended scoreless.  The Tigers put the game away with five goals in the second stanza.  Wes Waldschmidt opened the scoring just 49 seconds into the period on an assist from Dittrich as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead.  Three minutes later, Simanic knocked in his first goal as NA extended the margin to 2-0.  Less than a minute later, Gaertner got on the board on an assist from Vaglia as NA quickly jumped to a 3-0 advantage.  The Tigers were not done in the second period as Dittrich added a power play goal at the 8:20 mark as the margin went to 4-0.  Finally, with 57 seconds remaining in the period, Halapin scored another power play goal on an assist from Simanic as NA took a commanding 5-0 lead into the second intermission.

It was more of the same in the final period.  Gaertner recorded his second goal of the game at the 13:16 mark with freshman Dylan Rohar and senior Joe Camut picking up the helpers.  Simanic scored his second on an assist from Gilson with 9:14 left as the lead went to 7-0.  Vaglia got his first with 5:44 left with junior Matt Lancaster assisting, and Gilson put the finishing touches on the victory with a goal at the 1:49 mark as NA was able to come home with a 9-0 victory.

The Tigers dominated play, outshooting the Knights 43-10 for the game.  Junior Adam Lutty stopped all of the Norwin shots to earn his first career shutout for the NA varsity.  Norwin had eight penalties for 17 minutes while the Tigers were sent off six times for 13 minutes.

The win improved the Tigers' PIHL record to 8-1 and first place in the North Division, one point ahead of Fox Chapel.  NA will host the second-place Foxes tonight at Bladerunners in Warrendale with game time scheduled for 8:00 pm.

TIGERS STOP SENECA VALLEY, 6-0, BEHIND SIMANIC'S HAT TRICK

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior forward Chris Simanic scored three goals to lead the Tigers to an impressive 6-0 victory over Seneca Valley at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night.  Senior winger Alan Halapin added a goal and three assists while senior defenseman Paul Dittrich recorded three assists as the Tigers won their fifth straight.  The Tigers scored four power play goals in the game.

The Tigers came out strong and attacked the Seneca Valley goal with only the goaltending of Raider Nicholas Miller keeping them off the board early.  Junior forward Wes Waldschmidt had two good chances  but was stopped by Miller on one while the other hit the right post with 11:53 remaining.  Simanic was robbed by Miller from right in front just a minute later.  With NA on the power play, Simanic took advantage of a  second opportunity and put in a rebound to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage with 10:22 on the first period clock.  The Tigers continued to pressure the Raider goal but Miller stopped senior Joe Camut on a partial breakaway and robbed Dittrich when he snared the NA defenseman's hard slap shot in his glove with 6:25 left in the period.  Later in the period, freshman Donny Lewis picked up a loose puck in the offensive end and beat Miller with a great move and backhand shot into the net to give NA a 2-0 advantage.  The goal was the first for Lewis as a varsity player.  The Tiger defense, led by Dittrich and senior Ian McGlumphy held the Raiders to just one shot in the period as NA took a 2-0 advantage into the first intermission.

Early in the second period, senior Chris Gilson broke free and skated in alone on Miller, but the Seneca netminder was able to make the save.  The Raiders then came close to scoring for the only time in the game.  Sophomore goalie Max Richards made a good save on Caleb Hudspath at the 13:26 mark and then turned away two consecutive Seneca Valley shots to keep the Tigers on top at 2-0.  After Matt Jarrett of the Raiders was sent off for slashing at the 12:04 mark,  Halapin had a great chance from right in front of the goal but Miller made the save.  Simanic then scored his second goal later on the power play with Dittrich and Halapin picking up assists as the lead went to 3-0.  Just 29 seconds later, freshman Dylan Rohar scored from the right side to increase the margin to 4-0.  The Tigers continued to dominate and had three consecutive chances with 8:30 remaining in the period but Miller denied them.  With 6:03 left, McGlumphy sent a hard slap shot toward the corner, but Miller again was able to make the save.    Halapin was able to beat the Seneca Valley goalie less than a minute later on assists from Wes Waldschmidt and Gilson to give the Tigers a 5-0 advantage after two periods of play.

Junior Adam Lutty took over in goal for the Tigers in the third period.  Seneca Valley had a 5-on-3 advantage early in the period, but could not add to the lead.  The best chance came on a hard slap shot by Dittrich that Miller was just able to get a pad on to deflect it wide.  Later in the period with NA on a power play, Dittrich set up Simanic in front of the Raider goal, and the Tiger senior tapped it in to complete the hat trick and give NA their final goal in a 6-0 victory.

The Tigers outshot the Raiders, 46-6, in the game.  Richards and Lutty shared the shutout along with the NA defense.  Both teams had five penalties for ten minutes.  For his efforts at the offensive end, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Chris Simanic as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers improved their PIHL record to 7-1 and moved them to within a point of Fox Chapel for the North Division lead.  NA will travel to Center Ice in Delmont to face Norwin tomorrow night.  Game time is scheduled for 9:20 pm.
