ICE HOCKEY GAME SUMMARIES TIGERS
BLAST BALDWIN, 8-1, FOR The Tigers traveled to the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon on Friday night and soundly defeated the Baldwin Highlanders, 8-1. Senior defenseman Paul Dittrich posted a hat trick and added an assist to pace NA to their fourth straight victory in PIHL play. Junior forward Wes Waldschmidt added a pair of goals and two assists for the winning Tigers. The Tigers took control early in the game. Senior Chris Simanic scored a power play goal at the 9:39 mark on assists from Dittrich and senior Alan Halapin as NA took a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Dittrich tallied his first goal to make it 2-0. Waldschmidt scored less than a minute later at the Tigers jumped to a 3-0 lead with 6:54 left in the first period. Neither team scored again in the period as NA took the 3-0 advantage to the first intermission. In the second period, the Tigers added four goals, two on power plays, to take control of the contest. Sophomore Josh Herbert found the net just 42 seconds into the stanza on assists from Waldschmidt and Simanic to extend the lead to 4-0. After Waldschmidt made it 5-0 at the 8:42 mark, senior Chris Gilson knocked in a power play goal at the 8:03 mark to increase the margin to 6-0. Baldwin finally got on the board when Nick Hinsch scored at the 2:57 mark, but Dittrich came back with his second goal of the game to give the Tigers a commanding 7-1 lead after two periods. In the third period, the only goal scored was by Dittrich who completed his hat trick with an unassisted marker with 8:24 remaining. It was a penalty filled game with NA committing 11 and the Highlanders 10. The Tigers made Baldwin pay, however, with three power play goals. NA outshot Baldwin, 39-20, for the game. Sophomore goalie Max Richards played the first two periods with junior Adam Lutty finishing in the net for the third period. Richards added an assist on the seventh NA goal. With the win, the Tigers improved their PIHL record to 6-1 and kept them one point behind Fox Chapel in the North Division. NA will host Seneca Valley on Tuesday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale. SHUT OUT The Tigers recorded their second straight shut out as they defeated division rival Seneca Valley, 5-0, at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night. Senior forward Alan Halapin and senior defenseman Paul Dittrich led the way with two goals and an assist each as NA won their third straight PIHL contest. Senior Chris Simanic scored the other Tiger goal. After a scoreless first period, the Tigers exploded for four goals in the second to put away the Raiders. Halpain started things off at the 11:58 mark on assists from freshman Brady Waldschmidt and senior Chris Gilson. The assist was the first varsity point for Waldschmidt. Halapin scored his second goal just 1:03 later on helpers from Dittrich and Simanic. The Tigers weren't finished as Dittrich tallied a power play goal at the 6:08 mark to extend the lead to 3-0. Finally, Simanic pushed the margin to 4-0 with a goal just 30 seconds before the end of the period with assists going to junior Dan Gaertner and senior Wes Waldschmidt. The Tigers took a commanding 4-0 advantage into the second intermission. Dittrich's second goal was the only score of the final period coming with 2:23 remaining in the game. Sophomore goalie Max Richards played 44 minutes while junior Adam Lutty came in for the final minute to share in the shutout. The Tigers outshot the Raiders, 36-23, on the evening. Seneca Valley was penalized six times for 12 minutes while the Tigers were called three times for six minutes. With the win, the Tigers improved their PIHL record to 5-1 moving them to within a point of division leader Fox Chapel. The Foxes have a record of 5-2-1 and a total of 11 points to the Tigers' 10. Junior forward Wes Waldschmidt had a hat trick while senior forward Chris Simanic recorded a goal and three assists to lead the Tigers to a 5-0 victory over Franklin Regional at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night. Sophomore goalie Max Richards and junior Adam Lutty stopped 17 Panther shots to share the shutout. The Tigers got off to a quick start with Waldschmidt's first goal at the 11:49 mark of the first period. With NA on a power play, senior Chris Gilson skated behind the Panther net and passed to Simanic who fed a perfect pass to Waldschmidt in front of the goal. Neither team scoring for the remainder of the period although the Tigers had two more good scoring opportunities. Simanic was stopped by Panther goalie Adam Treml who made a good save at the 9:45 mark. Senior defenseman Paul Dittrich sent a blistering slap shot from the point at the 4:44 mark but Treml made a tough glove hand save. The period ended with the Tigers holding a 1-0 advantage. In the second period, the Tigers took advantage of four Franklin Regional penalties to score three power play goals. With Ryan Gallagher just out of the box on an interference call, Waldschmidt scored his second goal on a hard shot from the right circle to give NA a 2-0 lead at the 10:54 mark. Simanic made it 3-0 just 34 seconds later when he scored from right in front of the Panther goal. Senior Joe Camut came close when he skated in alone on the left side but Treml was able to make the save with 9:41 remaining in the period. The Panthers kept picking up penalties. With Tim McDonough serving a double minor, another delayed penalty allowed the Tigers to bring an additional attacker on the ice and senior Alan Halapin made it pay off with a goal from the right side at the 7:16 mark. Waldschmidt finished the scoring when he deflected a shot by senior defenseman Chris Korenoski from the right point to give NA a 5-0 lead with 1:24 left. The Tigers' Nick Vaglia picked up an interference penalty with 1:01 left, but the Panthers could not score. The period ended with the Tigers holding a commanding 5-0 advantage. The physical play picked up in the third period with seven penalties being called, including a game misconduct against Tim McDonough at 8:57 of the period. The Panthers came out strong but could not score against backup goalie Adam Lutty who started the period in goal. The Tigers had a chance early in the period on a two-on-one. Junior forward Matt Lancaster came in on the left side and passed to sophomore forward Josh Herbert in front of the goal, but his back hand shot was stopped by goalie Anthony Livecchi was entered the game at the beginning of the period. Simanic had a chance later in the period but was stopped by Livecchi. The Tigers had a 5 of 3 advantage for almost two minutes but failed to add to the lead. The Panthers outshot NA, 9-6, in the period, but the Tiger defense and good play in the net by Lutty kept the Panthers off the board as NA came away with the 5-0 victory. It was a good win for the Tigers in a physical contest that saw sixteen penalties called, nine against Franklin Regional. In the game, NA outshot the Panthers, 25-17. For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Wes Waldschmidt as the Player of the Game. With the win, the Tigers regained first place in the North Division of the PIHL. The NA record improved to 4-1 on the season. The Tigers will not be back in action again until Tuesday, December 6, when they meet division rival Seneca Valley at Bladerunners in Warrendale. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS FALL TO MT. LEBANON, 3-1, IN CENTRAL SEMIFINALS The Tigers were defeated by the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils, 3-1, in the semifinals of the Central Catholic Invitational at the Valley Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon. Senior Chris Simanic scored the only NA goal as the Tigers fell behind early and could not catch up. Mt. Lebanon got first period goals by Rick Beuke and Mike Roman to take a 2-0 lead after one period of play. Simanic came back to cut the lead in half with a power play goal 12:41 of the second period. With Lebo leading 2-1 in the third period, Matt Bartkowski put the game away with a power play goal with 8:55 remaining as the Blue Devils moved on to the championship game. Sophomore goalie Max Richards kept the Tigers in the game with 27 saves. Lebo outshot NA, 30-11, for the game. In the final, Mt. Lebanon defeated Cheektowaga Central, 5-1, to win the title. The Tigers will be back in PIHL action again on Tuesday night when they host the Franklin Regional Panthers at Bladerunners in Warrendale. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS SPLIT PAIR IN CENTRAL CATHOLIC INVITATIONAL After losing a 3-1 decision to Upper St. Clair on Saturday morning, the Tigers came back to defeat St. Jean de Brebeuf from Hamilton, Ontario, in an afternoon contest at the Valley Sports Complex. Sophomore Josh Herbert scored the only NA goal against USC while junior Wes Waldschmidt led the Tigers against St. Jean with a goal and two assists. Senior Chris Simanic added three assists/ In the first game, Upper St. Clair took a 1-0 lead in the first period when Kevin Lucas scored with 4:21 remaining. The Tigers came back to tie the game on Herbert's goal at the 2:41 mark of the second period as the teams went to the second intermission tied at 1-1. The Panthers tallied the game winner midway through the third period on Mike Penkrot's goal. David Crocket added a final score with just four seconds remaining to give USC the 3-1 victory. Sophomore Max Richards stopped 17 of 20 USC shots while NA recorded 19 shots on goal. The second game was a physical contest with fourteen penalties handed out including nine against the Braves of SJB. After senior Chris Gilson gave NA a 1-0 lead with a power play goal early in the first period, the Braves came back to tie the game just seconds later. The teams went to the first intermission tied at 1-1. In the second period, Cole McNeil game St. Jean a 2-1 lead at the 10:48 mark, but Waldschmidt answered for NA just 1:16 later on a power play to tie the score at 2-2. Sophomore Tyson Stupy put the Tigers ahead 2-1 at the 6:33 mark, and junior forward Matt Lancaster made it 4-2 with a goal just 1:21 later. NA took the 4-2 lead into the second intermission. In the third period, junior forward Danny Gaertner extended the margin to 5-2 at the 12:07 mark. Richards and the NA defense held off the Braves for the remainder of the game as the Tigers earned a 5-2 victory. St. Jean outshot NA 19-17 for the game. Richards was in goal for the victory. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS DOMINATE MONSIGNOR BONNER, 7-1 The Tigers opened their defense of the Central Catholic Invitational crown with a convincing 7-1 victory over the Monsignor Bonner Friars on Friday afternoon at the Valley Sports Complex. Junior Wes Waldschmidt had the hat trick to pace NA while senior linemate Chris Gilson added a goal and four assists. Sophomore goalie Max Richards had a shutout until the Friars scored with just two minutes left in the game. The Tigers jumped on top quickly with Waldschmdit scoring at the 10:50 mark and adding another goal just 3:45 later. The Tigers took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. In the second period, sophomore forward Josh Herbert scored the only goal of the period on assists from seniors Chris Simanic and Ian McGlumphy. After two periods, the Tigers led, 3-0. In the third period, the Tigers broke the game open with three straight goals, two on power plays. Junior Matt Lancaster made it 4-0 just 49 seconds into the stanza. Senior Paul Dittrich followed with a power play goal at the 11:04 mark and Waldschmidt's third goal making it 6-0 with 9:34 remaining. After Bonner broke the shutout at the 2:00 mark, Gilson finished the scoring with 20 seconds left in the game as the Tigers took an impressive 7-1 victory. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS PAY BACK NORTH HILLS, 5-3 The Tigers struck quickly with two goals in the first 3:55 and went on to defeat the North Hills Indians, 5-3, on Friday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale. Junior forward Matt Lancaster led the way with a pair of goals, and senior defenseman Paul Dittrich added two assists as the Tigers avenged a loss to North Hills earlier in the week. Junior Wes Waldschmidt, freshman Dylan Rohar and senior Joe Camut also scored for the winning Tigers. Early in the first period, Waldschmidt gave the Tigers the lead with an unassisted goal just 2:05 into the contest. Lancaster scored his first goal, also unassisted, 1:50 later as the Tigers took a 2-0 lead. Neither team scored for the remainder of the period as the NA defense held NH to just four shots on goal. It remained a defensive game through most of the second period until Nick Rostek tallied the first Indian goal with 3:23 remaining. The Tigers answered with Lancaster scoring his second goal on assists from Camut and Dittrich with 1:49 on the second period clock. The Tigers took a 3-1 advantage into the second intermission. Early in the third period, Rohar scored his first PIHL league goal to push the NA lead to 4-1 with 9:41 remaining in the game. Dave Hansell scored a shorthanded goal to bring the Indians with two at 4-2 with 7:32 left. Camut came back to score just 1:17 later to extend the lead to 5-2. Hansell's second goal of the game made it a 5-3 game, but the Tiger defense held off the Indians the rest of the way as NA held on for the 5-3 victory. The Tigers dominated play outshooting the Indians, 32-17, for the game. Sophomore Max Richards was in goal for NA and earned the victory. Both teams committed five penalties and picked up ten penalty minutes in the contest. The win improved the NA record to 3-1 in PIHL play and kept them on top in the North Division. The Tigers will play in the Central Catholic Invitational Tournament next weekend at the Valley Sports Complex. Sixteen teams from Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland and Ontario will participate. NA will open play on Friday afternoon against Monsignor Bonner from Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, with game time set for 4:30 pm.
