GAME SUMMARIES - 3

MEADVILLE HANDS TIGERS SECOND
STRAIGHT LOSS, 3-1

The Tigers traveled to Meadville on Monday night and were defeated by the Bulldogs, 3-1, in a PIHL contest.  Junior Wes Waldschmidt scored early in the second period for the Tigers, but Meadville rallied for the close victory. 

After a scoreless first period, Waldschmidt put the Tigers on top, 1-0, with an unassisted power play goal just 36 seconds into the second stanza.  Later in the period, Casey Rogers was able to push a loose puck past NA sophomore netminder Max Richards to tie the game with 8:46 remaining.  The teams went to the second intermission tied at 1-1.

The game remained tied for most of the third period until Zane O'Shurak drove a slap shot past Richards to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead with 4:20 remaining in the game.  Mike Noonan got an insurance goal with 28.7 on the clock to give the Bulldogs the win.

Meadville outshot NA, 28-18 on the game.  Meadville was called for four penalties for eight minutes while the Tigers were penalized twice for four minutes.

The Tigers will return home on Tuesday when they host Central Catholic on Senior Night.  The Tigers Seniors and their parents will be honored before the game at Bladerunners in Warrendale.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:20 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 6:30 pm.

MT. LEBANON STOPS TIGERS, 3-0, IN
BATTLE FOR FIRST PLACE

The second-ranked Tigers met #1 Mt. Lebanon on Thursday night at Mt. Lebanon and were defeated by the Blue Devils, 3-0.  Lebo used a strong defensive effort to hold NA to just 12 shots for the game. 

After a scoreless first period, Tyler Murovich gave Lebo a 1-0 lead with a second period goal.  Mt. Lebanon added goals by Brandon Dornish and Sean McDermott in the third period as they went on to the 3-0 victory.

The Blue Devils outshot the Tigers, 25-12, for the game.  NA was penalized five times for 16 minutes while Lebo was sent off seven times for 14 minutes.

The loss dropped the NA record to 17-2 in PIHL play.  The Tigers have already clinched a playoff spot and have first place secured in the North Division.

TIGERS TROUNCE GATEWAY, 9-2, FOR THEIR FIFTEENTH STRAIGHT VICTORY

The Tigers had little trouble with Gateway in a 9-2 victory at the Center Ice arena on Monday night as they won their fifteenth straight victory.  Sophomore forward Josh Herbert scored three goals as the Tigers broke the game open with a five-goal second period.  Junior forward Wes Waldschmidt had two goals and three assists while junior forward Matt Lancaster had a pair of goals and an assist.

Gateway scored first when J.J. Mignogria was able to give the Gators a 1-0 lead at the 9:17 mark of the opening period.  Herbert answered with his first goal of the game on assists from freshman Dylan Rohar and Waldschmidt with 4:36 remaining.  The teams went to the first intermission tied at 1-1 even though NA outshot Gateway, 8-2.

The Tigers wasted no time in taking the lead early in the second period.  Lancaster scored just 11 seconds into the period to put NA ahead for good, 2-1.  A little over three minutes later, Rohar scored on assists from seniors Chris Gilson and Joe Camut to make it a 3-1 game.  Lancaster tallied his second goal of the game on a power play at the 5:49 mark to extend the margin to 4-1.  Waldschmidt made it 5-1with 4:35 remaining with an unassisted goal.  Herbert scored his second just 23 seconds later as the Tigers took a commanding 6-1 lead into the third period.

Early in the third period, Mignogria scored again to cut the lead to 6-2, but NA answered quickly.  Herbert's third goal came 24 seconds later on assists from Lancaster and senior defenseman Chris Korenoski as the Tigers regained the five-goal lead at 7-2.  Gilson and Waldschmidt added scores later in the period as the Tigers went on to the 9-2 victory.

The Tigers dominated play, outshooting the Gators, 37-5, on the game.  Junior goalie Adam Lutty was in goal for the victory.  There were only five penalties called in the game, three against Gateway and two against the Tigers.

The win improved the overall NA record to 17-1-0 in PIHL play.  The Tigers have already clinched a playoff spot in the upcoming post-season.  On Thursday night, the Tigers will travel to Mt. Lebanon to meet the unbeaten and #1-ranked Blue Devils.  Game time is set for 8:50 pm at the Mt. Lebanon Arena.

NORTHEAST ALL-STARS TIE SOUTHWEST
ALL-STARS, 1-1, IN CLASS AAA GAME

The Northeast All-Stars tied the Southwest All-Stars, 1-1, in the Class AAA All-Star game at the Valley Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.  Mike Ulicny of Norwin scored the Northeast goal.

Both goals were scored in the second period.  After Ulicny gave the Northeast a 1-0 lead, Tyler Murovich of Mt. Lebanon came back later in the period to tie the game.  Shaler goalie Nick Bennardo was voted as the MVP of the game after stopping all 20 shots he faced in the third period and overtime.

Four Tigers played for the Northeast team.  Senior defensemen Paul Dittrich and Ian McGlumphy, senior forward Alan Halapin, and junior forward Wes Waldschmidt.

TIGERS BLANK CATHEDRAL PREP, 3-0

The Tigers continued their winning ways with a 3-0 victory over Cathedral Prep on Friday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale.  Senior Chris Gilson, junior Wes Waldschmidt, and senior Paul Dittrich scored goals for the winning Tigers. 

The Tigers dominated play in the first period and scored on two power plays.  Gilson put the Tigers ahead, 1-0, on assists from sophomore Josh Herbert and junior Matt Lancaster at the 11:01 mark.  Waldschmidt made it 2-0 with just 28 seconds left in the period with All-Star senior defensemen Dittrich and Ian McGlumphy assisting.  NA outshot Prep, 15-2, and took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Neither team scored in the second period although the Tigers outshot the Ramblers, 18-5 Midway through the third period, Dittrich scored on assists from Herbert and freshman Jake Williams to give the Tigers a commanding 3-0 advantage.  NA dominated the period, outshooting Prep, 22-3.  For the game, the Tigers had an overwhelming 55-10 advantage in shots on goal.  Sophomore Max Richards and junior Adam Lutty shared in the shutout.

The win was the fourteenth straight for NA and gave them a 12-point lead over Fox Chapel in the North Division.  The Tiger record in PIHL play improved to 16-1-0.  The Tigers will travel to Center Ice in Delmont on Monday night to take on Gateway in a 9:20 pm PIHL contest.

WALDSCHMIDT NAMED PIHL PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Junior forward Wes Waldschmidt was selected as the PIHL-Pittsburgh Penguin Player of the Month for December.  Waldschmidt scored four goals and added five assists in four games during the month.  According to the PIHL, "Wes is worthy of this because of his productivity, versatility, accomplishment as a junior and competitiveness.  (Wes has a) 4.0 QPA"

The Tiger team will host Erie Cathedral Prep tonight at Bladerunners in Warrendale.  Game time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.  NA students will be admitted free!

PENN-TRAFFORD FALLS TO TIGERS, 5-2

The Tigers traveled to the Center Ice Arena in Delmont on Thursday night and came home with a 5-2 victory over the Penn-Trafford Warriors.  Junior Wes Waldschmidt and senior Joe Camut scored two goals each to lead the Tiger attack.  Freshman Donny Lewis scored the fifth NA goal.

The Tigers took command in the first period.  NA scored three goals in a span of 50 seconds midway through the period.  Waldschmidt put the Tigers ahead, 1-0, on an assist from junior Matt Lancaster.  Twenty seconds later, Camut got his first goal with senior Chris Gilson and junior Dan Gaertner earning the helpers.  Lewis made it 3-0 just thirty seconds later with Waldschmidt and sophomore defenseman Tyson Stupy picking up the assists.  The Tigers took a 3-0 lead into the second period.

Penn-Trafford scored a power play goal early to cut the deficit to 3-1.  Camut answered with his second goal at the 9:10 mark with assists going to Gaerner and Stupy.  The Warriors came back to cut the deficit to 4-2 as the second period ended.  In the third period, Waldschmidt tallied an insurance goal on assists from junior defenseman Brad Schwartzmier and Gaertner, who recorded his third assist of the game.  The Tigers held off P-T for the remainder of the contest to register a 5-2 decision.

Sophomore Max Richards and junior Adam Lutty shared time in goal and stopped 11 of 13 Warrior shots.  The Tigers recorded 31 shots on the P-T goal.  In a relatively penalty-free game, the Warriors were sent off twice for four minutes while the Tigers were penalized only once for two minutes.

With the win, the Tigers won their thirteenth straight and improved their PIHL record to 15-1-0.   NA increased their lead over second-place Fox Chapel to ten points.   The Tigers will be back in action again on Friday night when they host the Ramblers from Erie Cathedral Prep.  Game time is scheduled for 6:00 pm at Bladerunners in Warrendale.

TIGERS BLANK BUTLER, 6-0, FOR
TWELFTH STRAIGHT WIN

The Tigers shut out the Butler Golden Tornado, 6-0, at the Belmont Ice Complex on Wednesday night to win their 12th straight PIHL contest.  Sophomore forward Josh Herbert scored a pair of goals while junior forward Matt Lancaster added a goal and three assists for the winning Tigers.

In the first period, senior Chris Gilson put the Tigers ahead, 1-0, with a power play goal at the 7:30 mark.  Herbert made it 2-0 on an assist from senior Joe Camut with 3:07 remaining in the period.  With just three seconds left, junior Wes Waldschmidt tallied another power play goal to give NA a 3-0 lead after one period of play.

In the second period, junior Dan Gaertner scoring at the 6:10 mark to extend the lead to 4-0.  With 3:48 remaining in the period, Lancaster knocked in another power play goal as the Tigers took a commanding 5-0 advantage into the second intermission.  Herbert scored his second goal of the game at the 13:05 mark of the third period as the Tigers took home  a convincing 6-0 victory.

Butler was guilty of 11 penalties for 22 minutes and the Tigers made them pay with three power play goals.  The NA defense held the Tornado to just five shots with junior goalie Adam Lutty picking up the shutout.  The Tigers were sent off four times for eight minutes. 

With the win, the Tigers improved their PIHL record to 14-1-0 and extended their lead over  second-place Fox Chapel to eight points.  The Tigers will travel to the Center Ice arena in Delmont tonight to face the Penn-Trafford Warriors.  Game time is scheduled for 7:20 pm.
