TIGERS TOP FOXES, 3-0, TO CAPTURE
FOURTH STRAIGHT WPIAL TITLE!

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

The Tigers downed the Fox Chapel Foxes, 3-0, in the WPIAL Class AAA Championship at LaRoche College on Friday night.  Junior MB Seth Johnson posted eleven kills to pace NA while senior MB Kyle Gregan and senior OH Brian Tevis added seven each.  Senior setter Michael Krepp recorded 36 assists in directing the NA attack while senior DS Evan Buysse led the NA defense with 16 digs.

In the first game, the Tigers took control from the outset building an 8-1 lead.  Gregan started things for NA with a strong kill down the middle and the Tigers were off and running.  A combined block by Gregan and Krepp, a kill by Tevis down the middle, individual blocks by Gregan and Krepp along with several FC hitting errors gave NA their early advantage.  After the Foxes picked up a pair of points on NA errors, senior OH Tim Buresh went cross court to push the Tiger lead to 12-3.  After a pair of NA hitting errors, senior OH Alex Verlinich scored down the middle and junior opposite Steve Ferringer cross court as the Tigers pushed the margin to 17-5.  Fox Chapel setter Sam Dickens finally stopped the run with a block but Johnson scored off a quick set to make it an 18-7 game.  FC's Brett Goldstein and Gregan exchanged points before the Fox's Dan Tublin served an ace to make it 19-10.  Fox Chapel rallied briefly on the hitting of Jake Steinhaus, Mike Lucas and Tublin to cut the margin to 24-15.  After Goldstein blocked for a point, junior MB Justin Haser came off the NA bench to finish the Foxes with a huge blast as the Tigers won game one, 25-16, to take a one game to none lead in the match.

The Tigers jumped off to a quick lead in game two.  After a FC hitting error, Tevis made it 2-0 with a kill off the Fox Chapel front row blockers.  After Dickens answered with a dink, Verlinich served two consecutive aces and a pair of FC hitting errors combined to push the margin to 6-1.  The teams exchanged errors before Tublin scored out of the back row with the score going to 9-3.  After another FC error, Johnson scored off a slide, and Buresh came through with a tip and a blast off the FC blockers as the NA lead went to 13-4.  After Verlinich and Lucas exchanged points, Tublin scored off the blockers and followed with a service ace as the Foxes cut the margin to 17-10.  Fox Chapel continued to rally behind the hitting of Tublin, Goldstein and Steinhaus as they closed to within four at 19-15.  Down the stretch, however, the Tigers regrouped to outscore Fox Chapel, 6-2, and win the game.  A kill by Johnson off a quick set and Tevis with a dink forced a FC time out with the score standing at 21-15.  After Tublin and Dickens scored to make it 23-17, Johnson's kill off the FC blockers brought NA to game point at 24-17.  A strong hit by Gregan ended game two with the Tigers taking a 25-17 victory and a two games to none lead in the match.

Fox Chapel came back in game three to battle NA until the end.  After the teams fought to a 5-5 tie in the early going, kills by Verlinich and Johnson pushed the Tigers ahead, 7-5.  After Haser scored off a quick set, a Tublin kill and NA hitting error brought the Foxes to within one at 9-8.  NA continued on a kill by Ferringer and a pair by Tevis to make it a 12-9 game.  Tublin answered with a kill down the middle, Goldstein added another off the NA blockers, and Tublin served an ace as FC fought back to tie the score at 12-12.  Johnson added a pair of kills with Steinhaus scoring down the middle for FC but several Fox Chapel errors gave NA a 17-14 advantage.  Once again, the Foxes came back on kills by Tublin, Steinhaus and Lucas to take their first lead of the match at 18-17.  After an NA time out, Johnson tied the game off a quick set.  Tublin and Ferringer exchanged kills before a FC hitting error gave the Tigers a 20-19 advantage.  A pair of NA errors put the Foxes back ahead, but Tevis went off the blockers to tie the game at 21-21.  After a FC error, Tublin went cross court to knot the game again.  The teams exchanged errors before a block by Steinhaus put Fox Chapel at game point, 24-23.  After Buresh tied the game with a blast off the blockers, an NA service error gave FC another chance at game point.  Verlinich came back with a huge kill off the FC front row to tie the game at 25-25.  Buresh then served an ace down the line to put NA at game and match point.  Tevis came through with the set and match winner to send the Tigers to the title with the 27-25 victory in game three and the three games to none win in the match.

Once again, the Tigers got contributions from a number of players on their way to the championship.  At the net, Buresh and Krepp posted five kills with Verlinich adding four while Johnson and Gregan posted three blocks each.  Tevis led with 17 perfect passes with Buysse and Verlinich adding seven each.  Defensively, Buysse led the way with 16 digs with Verlinich chipping in with 13, Buresh eleven and Tevis eight.  Verlinich posted a pair of service aces and Buresh one.  For his defensive efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Evan Buysse as the Player of the Match.

The win gave NA their fourth consecutive WPIAL crown and the seventh in the last eight years.  The Tigers lead all Class AAA teams with thirteen titles.  The victory also improved the overall NA record to 16-1 on the season as they get ready to enter the PIAA playoffs that will begin on Tuesday.  The Tigers will meet Hempfield (District 3) at St. Francis University in first round action with match time scheduled for 7:00 pm.

TIGERS SWEEP HEMPFIELD, 3-0, TO ADVANCE
 TO WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

After being tested by Hempfield, 26-24, in game one, the Tigers had little trouble completing the victory with 25-13 and 25-10 wins in games two and three in the WPIAL Class AAA semifinals at North Hills on Tuesday night.  Senior MB Kyle Gregan led the way with 12 kills while senior OH Tim Buresh added seven as NA moved on to the final for the seventh time in eight years.  Senior setter Michael Krepp posted 34 assists and six kills for the winning Tigers.

Game one was a battle from the outset.  After junior MB Seth Johnson gave NA a 1-0 lead and a pair of Hempfield errors made it a 3-1 game, the teams exchanged points until the end with a three-point lead the largest for either team.  A pair of early kills by senior OH Brian Tevis gave the Tigers a 5-4 lead but Oliver Cisowski answered to tie the score.  Kills by Buresh and Gregan pushed the margin to 9-7 but Kyle Turkalj came back with a pair of kills to tie the score again.  A kill and block by Gregan extended the lead to 12-10, but Tom Stewart and Camden Harley posted kills to tie the score yet again.  An ace by junior DS Chris Conti and a kill by Johnson gave NA its biggest lead at 16-13, but the Spartans posted four straight points, including a kill by Alex Santavy to give Hempfield the lead at 17-16.  The Tigers were able to tie the score at 18 on a kill by senior OH Alex Verlinich and at 19 on a cross court balst by junior opposite Steve Ferringer.  A Stewart kill and NA hitting error put Hempfield back on top, 21-19, before Gregan answered to cut it to one.  Turklj and Tevis exchanged kills as the Spartans maintained the one point lead at 22-21.   After a Gregan kill tied the game, the teams exchanged service errors.  An NA hitting error put Hempfield at game point, but a Krepp kill tied the game at 24-24.  At this point, Buresh came through with a pair of kills that served as game winners giving the Tigers a 26-24 win in game one and a one game to none lead in the match.

The close loss in game one seemed to take a lot out of the Hempfield effort.  The Tigers jumped in front, 5-1, in game two and never looked back on kills by Gregan and Ferringer, an ace by senior DS Evan Buysse and a block by Gregan.  NA continued to expand the lead on kills by Gregan and Verlinich and several Hempfield hitting errors as the margin went to 11-4.  After an NA error, Tevis picked up a pair of kills and Buresh added an ace to send the lead to 16-5 before Cisowski's kill stopped the run.  Once again, the Tigers continued to control play with Ferringer and Gregan posting kills and Gregan another block as the Tigers pushed the margin to 20-9.  After a kill by Turkilj, Gregan and junior MB Justin Haser both went down the middle before a net violation on NA slowed the run, but the Tigers held a 22-11 lead.  After Buresh scored off the Hempfield  blockers, Cisolwski answered and an NA hitting error made it a 23-13 game.  After a Hempfield miscue, the Tigers won a joust at the net to take a 25-13 victory in game two and a two games to non lead in the match.

Game three was a repeat of game two.  After an early 3-3 tie, the Tigers took a 4-3 lead on a kill by Buresh and never trailed.  The Spartans stayed close early on an ace by Ryan Kelley and a kill by Turkilj off the NA blockers as they tie the game at 7-7.  At this point, Johnson took over with a kill off a quick set, a block, and another kill off the Spartan blockers to give NA a 10-7 advantage.  With Buresh serving, the Spartans committed a pair of errors to extend the margin to 12-7.  Harley's kill brought the Spartans to within four at 13-9, and Cisowski answered a Tevis blast to make it 14-10.  The Tigers would score the next eleven points to finish off both the game and match.  After a service error, Krepp scored on a no look left handed tip down the middle and Gregan put back an overpass to make it 17-10.  A big blast by Krepp was followed by four straight hitting errors by the Spartans as the lead went to 23-10.  Sophomore OH Zach Shaw came in to serve an ace, and a Hempfield hitting error brought NA to game and match point.  A block by freshman Joe Murphy put the finishing touches of the evening as NA won game three, 25-10, and the match, three games to none.

Once again, the Tigers got contributions from a number of players on a hot and humid night at North Hills.  At the net, Tevis recorded six kills with Johnson adding five and Ferringer three while Gregan and Ferringer had three blocks each.  Buysse started the attack with ten perfect passes with Tevis and Buresh adding six each.  Defensively, Buysse led with 17 digs while Tevis posted nine, Krepp seven, and Verlinich and Buresh six each.   Conti, Buysse, Buresh and Shaw all recorded service aces.  For his efforts throughout the match, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Tim Buresh as the Player of the Match.

With the win, the Tigers improved their overall record to 15-1 on the season as they advanced to the championship match on Friday.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the match LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:45 pm.  Match time is scheduled for 8:00 pm at LaRoche College.

Penn-Trafford came ready to play and took an early 4-1 lead behind the hitting of John Pasek and Connor Schade.   Gregan led an NA rally with senior OH Tim Buresh adding a pair of kills to tie the game at 4-4.  After the Warriors built a 10-7 lead, a kill by junior MB Seth Johnson off a quick set, a P-T service error, a putback of an overpass by junior opposite Steve Ferringer, another kill by Gregan, and a block by Tevis tied the game at 10-10.  The Tigers took only their second lead of the game when Tevis went off the P-T blockers to put NA ahead, 13-12.  The teams continued to exchange points until a hitting error by the Warriors and a cross-court kill by Gregan gave NA the lead for good at 16-15.  After two more hitting errors, Johnson put back another overpass to extend the margin to 19-15.  Joe Bortak answered for Penn-Trafford and NA was called for a net violation before Krepp tipped for a point to make it a 20-17 game.  A kill by Schade and an NA hitting error brought the Warriors to within one.  Down the stretch, however, the Tigers put together a 5-2 run to win the game.  Senior OH Alex Verlinich hit the back corner, but Bortak came back with a deep kill to keep it a one-point game.  Consecutive kills by Tevis and Gregan pushed the margin to 23-20 before an NA block went out of bounds.  A kill by Ferringer down the line put the Tigers at game point.  Krepp finished the Warriors with a hard smash as NA won game one, 25-21, to take a one game to none lead in the match.

Once again the teams battled on even terms early in game two.  With the game tied at 6-6, Gregan served an ace and Buresh blocked for a point to give NA the lead for good at 8-6.  With NA up, 9-7, Krepp served an ace but Drew Reger answered for the Warriors with a cross court kill.  Buresh then went down the line, junior MB Justin Haser sent a hard kill down the middle, and Tevis scored off the P-T front row blockers as NA extended the lead to 13-10.  After an NA hitting error, Gregan followed with a kill down the middle to make it a 14-11 game.  After Bortak and Gregan exchanged kills down the middle, a P-T hitting error made it a 16-12 game.  After Krepp and Pasek exchanged kills, NA went on a 5-1 run on a kill by Hasek, a pair of blocks by Tevis and a kill by sophomore OH Zach Shaw along with a pair of P-T hitting errors as the lead went to 21-14.  Another Tevis block pushed the lead to 22-14 before an NA service error.  A kill by Tevis down the middle was followed by an NA violation as the score went to 23-16.  Gregan's kill down the line brought NA to game point.  After a service error kept P-T alive, Gregan went down the middle off a quick set as the Tigers took game two, 25-17, to capture a two games to none lead in the match.

Game three belonged to the Tigers as they got off to 5-0 and 8-1 leads early.  Tevis scored off the P-T blockers to start NA off on the right foot.  After a Warrior hitting error, Gregan scored again off a quick set, Shaw went cross court, and a violation was called on the Warriors as the Tigers took a 5-0 lead.  After a kill by Pasek stopped the run, a kill by Verlinich and two more hitting errors pushed the margin to 8-1.  Another hitting error by P-T and a block by Johnson and Krepp pushed the margin to 10-2.  A kill by Bortak and an ace by Alex Snopko cut the lead to 10-4 before Johnson scored off a slide.  Bortak's kill down the line was answered by a block from Verlinich as the score went to 12-5.  After an NA hitting error, Tevis scored again off the P-T front line.  Senior DS Evan Buysse followed with an ace and Shaw blocked for a point before Reger's dink stopped the run with NA on top 15-7.  Tevis added another kill, but NA was called for a pair of violations as the Warriors cut the margin to 17-8.  A kill by Schade down the middle and a block by Bortak make it an 18-10 NA lead.  After a kill by Pasek off the NA blockers, cut the margin to 19-11.  NA scored the next four points on a pair of blocks by Haser, a kill by Ferringer off the blockers, and a kill by Verlinich to the back line as the lead went to 23-11.  Bortak stopped the run with a kill down the middle, Ferringer put the Tigers at game and match point with a cross court kill.  Several NA hitting errors and a kill by Nick Marie kept the Warriors alive as they cut the lead to 24-16.  Hasek ended the game and the match with a blast off the Warrior blockers as NA won game three, 25-16, and the match, three games to none.

Also playing well at the net for the Tigers were Haser with six blocks along with Krepp with six kills and Verlinich, Ferringer, and Buresh with four kills each.  Buysse started the attack with nine perfect passes with Tevis adding eight and Buresh and Verlinich seven each.  Buysse led the defense with 12 digs with Verlinich posting nine and Tevis eight.  The Tigers also recorded three service aces.  For his efforts throughout the match, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Michael Krepp as the Player of the Match.

Game three started on even terms as the teams battled to a 6-6 tie early.  The Foxes followed with three straight points on a kill by Tublin from the back row, a point on a block that was a questionable call, and an NA hitting error to make it a 9-6 FC lead.  The Tigers fought back on a pair of Tevis kills and an ace by Verlinich to tie the game at 9-9.  After FC scored to take a one-point lead, a kill by Haser off a quick set and a dink by Verlinich gave NA an 11-10 lead.  Buresh put back an overpass to make it a 12-10 game.  The Tigers continued to lead as the battle between Gregan and Tublin intensified.  The two West Coast bound stars matched each other as NA continued to hold the lead until the Foxes tied the game at 19-19 on a kill from Tublin again from the back row.  After Verlinich went down the middle, Tublin answered off the NA blockers.  After Gregan gave NA a 22-21 lead, Tublin went down the line to tie the game again.  Tublin then put FC ahead with a kill just inside the back line, but NA answered on a block by Gregan to tie the game at 23-23.  Tublin then scored on two straight kills to give the Foxes a 25-23 win in game three to cut the NA lead to two games to one in the match.

The win in game three seemed to energize the Foxes in game four.  The teams exchanged points early with NA taking a 5-4 lead on a FC service error.  Tublin then took over again, serving three consecutive aces to give the Foxes an 8-5 lead.  After Haser again scored off a quick set, an NA hitting error made it a 10-7 FC advantage.  Kills by Tevis and Buresh cut the margin to one at 10-9.  Kills by Tublin and Jake Steinhaus push the lead to 14-10 before the Tigers rallied behind a Gregan kill, an ace by Buresh and a Gregan block to tie the game at 14-14.  The teams continued to exchange points as the score went to 18-18.  A pair of kills by Tublin off the NA blockers and an ace by Eli Roth pushed Fox Chapel ahead at 21-18.  The Tigers rallied, however, on a Buresh kill and a pair of serving points by senior DS Evan Buysse to tie the game at 21-21.  After the Foxes extended the margin to 23-21, a FC hitting error and a kill by Tevis tied the game again.  A dink by Tublin was answered by a dink by Buresh as the score moved to 24-24.  Once again, Tublin came up big with a pair of kills to give the Foxes a 26-24 win in game four to tie the match at two games each.

The Tigers took an early 4-1 lead in game five and it proved to be the difference as NA never trailed in the game.  After Verlinich went down the middle, FC committed a hitting error.  Tublin came back with a kill down the middle but Haser answered with a two-handed push into the corner.  Gregan followed with a huge block on Tublin to make it a 4-1 Tiger advantage.  After a FC time out, an NA hitting error and a blast by Tublin off the NA blockers cut the margin to 4-3.  Gregan came back off a quick set down the middle, but Mike Lucas answered for the Foxes.  A FC service error was followed by a Fox Chapel hitting error as the NA lead went to 7-4.  Goldsmith came back with a kill down the middle off a quick set, but Gregan scored again off a slide to make it 8-5.  Once again, Lucas kept the Foxes close with a kill, but a left handed smash by Krepp pushed the lead back to three at 9-6.  Steinhaus scored off the NA blockers, but Tevis again had an NA answer to make it a 10-7 game.  After Seman scored on a dink, Goldstein went down the middle to cut the margin to 10-9.  The Tigers then took over to post a 5-1 run to finish off the game and match.  A Tevis dink was followed by a violation by NA.  Gregan added another kill off a quick set and a Fox Chapel hitting error gave NA a 13-10 lead.  Two straight FC errors gave the Tigers a 15-10 victory in game five with NA capturing the match, three games to two.
