TIGERS STOP SENECA, 3-2, TO TAKE
OVER FIRST PLACE IN SECTION

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

The Tigers held off a Seneca Valley comeback with a 15-10 victory in game five to down the Raiders, 3-2, in a key section match at the Senior High gym on Thursday night.  Senior MB Kyle Gregan led the way with 12 kills and 10 blocks with senior OH Brian Tevis adding 11 kills, senior OH Alex Verlinich ten and sophomore OH Zach Shaw nine.  Senior setter Michael Krepp posted 44 assists in directing the NA hitting attack.

The teams battled on even terms for most of the evening.  In game one, NA jumped off to a 5-2 lead behind the hitting of Gregan and Verlinich with Krepp adding a left handed smash.  The Raiders rallied to take their first lead at 7-6 on a kill by Ben Hart and a pair of service aces by Joey Price.  SV extended the margin to 11-8 on kills by Nick Shaffer and Brad Parrish before NA came back to take a 13-12 lead on an ace by senior OH Tim Buresh and a block and kill by Gregan.  Once again, Seneca answered with a pair of kills by Nate Hayden, an ace by Shaffer and several NA hitting errors to take a 20-16 lead.  Junior MB Justin Haser kept NA alive with a cross court hit, but Nate Steele and Hayden recorded kills to push the margin to 24-18.  After Tevis scored off the SV blockers, Parrish blocked for the game point as the Raiders took a 25-19 victory in game one and a one game to none lead in the match.

Seneca Valley took an early 3-2 lead in game two on kills by Steele and Hart before a win by Haser at the net tied the game.  A left-handed smash by Krepp put NA on top for the first time at 5-4.  Steele and setter Cam Knight were able to pick up kills as the Raiders recaptured the advantage at 9-8.  Several NA hitting errors, a kill by Shaffer and another ace by Price pushed the lead to 15-11 before the Tigers regrouped.  A block by Verlinich, a hitting error by the Raiders and a Krepp kill tied the game with Tevis going down the line to give NA a 16-15 lead.  An NA service error and a Steele kill cross court put Seneca back ahead, but the Tigers were not to be denied in game two.  A kill by Tevis down the line and a putback of an overpass by Tevis gave NA the lead again.  An SV hitting error and a Shaw kill off the Raider blockers made it a 20-17 game.  Steele led another SV rally with a kill and ace as the Raiders were able to tie the game at 21-21.  After an NA time out, Gregan scored off a quick set, but Hart went off the NA blockers to tie the game again at 22-22.  A key service error by the Raiders put NA back ahead.  The Tigers took advantage of the miscue and added another point on a Seneca hitting error.  Gregan then blocked for the final point as the Tigers took game two, 25-22, to tie the match at one game each.

The teams matched points early in game three until an ace by senior DS Mike Severyn gave the Tigers the lead for good at 5-4.  A hitting error by the Raiders, a block by Verlinich, another block by Haser and another hitting error gave NA a 9-4 advantage.  Steele led a brief Raider comeback that cut the lead to 10-7 but game three belonged to the Tigers.  A kill by Haser down the middle and another off the SV blockers helped push the margin to 15-11.  After a Raider time out, Krepp blocked for a point before a Parrish dink cut the margin to 16-12.  Seneca continued to be their own worst enemy with several more errors and violations as the score went to 19-14.  After Shaffer went down the line, Haser and Krepp combined for a block to make it a 20-15 game.  Tevis added another point on a kill off the Raider front line, but Seneca had one last rally.  A kill by Shaffer, an NA service error and another kill by Parrish brought the Raiders to within three.  Haser then answered off the SV blockers and senior DS Evan Buysee served three consecutive points to bring the Tigers to game point at 24-19.   After an NA hitting error, the Raiders were called for a net violation that ended game three with the Tigers winning by a 25-20 margin.  NA took a two games to one lead in the match.

With their backs against the wall, the Raiders won game four to tie the match at two games each.  Seneca jumped off to a 4-0 lead and never trailed.  Parrish and Steele led the early charge for Seneca Valley.  After a kill by Hart made it 6-3, NA rallied on a service error, a kill by Verlinich and a block by Haser to cut the margin to 7-6.  It was as close as the Tigers would get.  Led by Knight and Herrmann, the Raiders extended the lead to 13-7.   A kill by Gregan off another quick set and a block by Verlinich cut the lead to 15-11, but Steele answered with a blast off the NA blockers.  A kill by Verlinich down the line cut the margin to 17-14, but game four belonged to the Raiders.  It was Steele again with three kills sparking a SV run that pushed the lead to 22-16.  Shaw was able to cut into the lead with a cross court hit, but Parrish ended game four with a kill down the middle to give the Raiders the 25-18 victory.  The match went to a fifth and final game tied at two games each.

The Tigers started quickly in game five on a cross court kill by Shaw and another left-handed smash by Krepp to take a 2-0 lead.  Seneca answered with four straight points on blocks by Hart and Parrish and a kill by Steele to take a 4-2 advantage.  After Steele went down the line, Krepp and Steele exchanged points as the score went to 7-5 in favor of the Raiders.  With Krepp serving, the Tigers went on 4-0 run to retake the lead.  After a hitting error by the Raiders, Krepp served an ace with Verllinich following with a dink to put NA on top, 8-7.  After an SV hitting error, Hayden scored off a slide to cut the margin to 9-7.  Tevis scored down the middle and with a block to extend the NA margin to 11-8.  The Raiders battled back, however, on a Steele kill and an NA violation to cut the margin to one.  The Tigers then scored the next five points to finish the match.  Tevis went off the blockers and Gregan blocked for a point to make it a 13-10 game.  After a Seneca time out, the Raiders were called for a violation to bring the score to game and match point at 14-10.  Gregan completed the victory with a big swing off a quick set as the Tigers won game five, 15-10, and the match, three games to two.

It was another good team victory by the Tigers with contributions from a number of players.  Statistically, Krepp added seven kills and Haser six for the winning Tigers.  Haser also posted six blocks.  Buysee was key in the back with 24 digs and 24 perfect passes.  Verlinich added 21 PP and seven digs with Krepp adding seven digs, Tevis six, and Haser four.    For his all-around efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Michael Krepp as the Player of the Match.

With the win, the NA section and overall record improved to 5-0 on the season.  The Tigers will travel to York to compete in the Central York Invitational over the weekend.  The tournament features some of the top teams from central and eastern Pennsylvania.
