To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers broke open a close 1-0 game with six runs in the fifth inning as they went on to a 7-1 victory over rival North Hills at the Senior High field on Monday night.  Junior 1B Toni Miller led the way with two hits good for two RBIs with senior catcher Maria Shevchik adding a double and single.  Senior RHP Deanna Tritinger allowed six hits, struck out three and walked none to earn the victory.

North Hills threatened with two outs in the top of the first.  NH pitcher Jess Rectenwald dropped a double just inside the right field line, but Tritinger got the third out on a line drive caught by senior 2B Christy Cotter.  In the bottom of the first, the Lady Tigers loaded the bases with one out but did not score.  Sophomore CF Jordan Macey led off with a single up the middle.  With one out, both senior SS Amber Steenbeke and junior 3B Kelsey Birsic drew walks.  Macey tried to score on a ball that got away from NH catcher Kaylee Zozo, but the threw to Rectenwald covering the plate was in time for the out.  A fly ball to deep right center field by Miller ended the threat.

Tritinger got the side in order in both the second and third innings.  NA broke through to take the lead in the bottom of the third.  After junior Erin Norweg drew a walk to lead off, Macey sacrificed her to second.  Junior RF Jenna Darrah and Birsic followed with infield singles to load the bases.  Miller came through with a base hit to center field to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 advantage after three innings of play.

Tritinger continued to hold off the Indians allowing just a harmless single in the fourth.  Shevchik drilled a double off the right field fence in the bottom of the fourth but her courtesy runner junior Anna Williams was stranded at third.  The Lady Tigers broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth.  After Darrah led off with a walk, Steenbeke lined a single to center field.  After one out, Miller singled to right field driving in Darrah and moving junior pinch runner Haley Wisniewski to third.  After junior pinch runner Mikiala Yates stole second, Cotter singled to right field scoring Wisniewski to make it a 3-0 game.  On the next pitch, junior LF Hannah Jones lined a single to left field that scored Yates.  Shevchik followed on the next pitch with a base hit to right field that scored Cotter to increase the margin to 5-0.  Both runners moved up on the play with Jones advancing to third and Shevchik to second where CR Williams took over.  A wild pitch scored Jones with an errant throw to left field bringing home Williams as the Lady Tigers took a commanding 7-0 lead after five innings of play.

The Indians got a run back in the top of the sixth.  With one out, April Klein singled to center field.  Rectenwald followed with a double off the right center field fence that scored Klein to cut the NA lead to 7-1 going into the bottom of the sixth.  Birsic singled with two outs in the sixth but NA did not score.  In the top of the seventh, Tritinger got the first two outs before Katie Gross and Kayla Ledergerber both singled.  Halea Hayden hit a pop fly that was caught by Steenbeke in the infield to end the game.

It was a good team performance by the Lady Tigers who did not commit an error in the win.  For her efforts at the plate with a pair of hits driving in the first two runs of the game, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Toni Miller as the Player of the Game.  With the win, NA improved to 3-1 in section play, 8-2 overall on the season.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Butler this afternoon to meet the Tornado in a 4:00 pm contest rescheduled from last week.

STEENBEKE BLANKS PINE-RICHLAND, 7-0

by Rick Meister

The North Allegheny Varsity Softball Team won its second home section contest in as many nights last night by defeating the Pine Richland Rams by the score of 7-0 behind the four-hit shutout pitching of senior Amber Steenbeke, who struck out five and walked only one to record her fourth victory of the season against only one loss.  The Tigers played errorless ball in support of Steenbeke as the raised their record to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in Section 3 AAAA play.

NA scored three times in the bottom of the first when with two outs Steenbeke worked a walk.  Junior courtesy runner Anna Williams ran for Steenbeke and came all the way around to score on a double to the fence by junior third baseman Kelsey Birsic.  Junior first baseman Toni Miller reached on an error, allowing Birsic to score run number two when the Pine Richland throw went down the right field line, with Miller advancing to second on the play.  A single by senior second baseman Christy Cotter sent Miller to third.  A bunt by junior left fielder Hannah Jones was once again mishandled by Pine Richland, and Miller scored the third and final run of the inning to give NA a 3-0 advantage after one.

The score remained 3-0 until the bottom of the fifth, when the Tigers put the game away with four more runs.  Sophomore center fielder Jordan Macey was hit in the foot by a pitch but remained in the game.  After a steal of second by Macey, junior right fielder Jenna Darrah walked on a 3-2 pitch.  A single by Steenbeke drove in Macey, and on the play Darrah advanced to third and Steenbeke to second.  Once again Williams ran for Steenbeke, and both Darrah and Williams scored on an RBI single for Birsic, who took second on the play at the plate. Cotter then singled to drive in Birsic to provide the final margin of the game, 7-0.  Pine Richland was limited to one base runner in the final two innings as Steenbeke and the Tiger defense secured the victory.

North Allegheny will next see action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Butler to meet the Golden Tornado in a 4:00 PM start.

In the bottom of the third, senior catcher Maria Shevchik singled and junior DP Ashley Briskey beat out a bunt.  SV pitcher Emily Watson was able to get the next three batters and the game remained scoreless after three innings.

In the top of the fourth, Seneca's Megan Buletko homered over the right field fence to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.  The Lady Tigers finally got the offense in gear in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.  After Shevchik led off with a base hit to center field, Briskey reached on a fielder's choice.  After Briskey stole second and moved to third on a passed ball, Macey lined a single to left field to tie the game.  Junior RF Jenna Darrah followed with an infield hit and senior SS Amber Steenbeke walked to load the bases.  Senior 3B Kelsey Birsic grounded to short with Macey scoring when the SV catcher dropped the ball.  Junior 1B Toni Miller singled to score Darrah but Steenbeke was tagged out between third and home.  With Cotter at bat, Birsic scored when the throw to third went into left field.  With four hits and three SV errors in the inning, NA took a 4-1 lead into the top of the sixth.

The Raiders rallied with four runs in the top of the sixth to retake the lead.  Julia Vandrak and Buletko singled to lead off.  Watson followed with a ground ball to short but the throw to second was dropped allowing SV to load the bases.  Davies drove in a run with a fielder's cholce. After a ground out moved the runners up,  Sara Mantick followed with a single to left field that was misplayed with CR Kelsey Mislan scoring to cut the lead to 4-3.  Alyssa Miller followed with a single to right center field scoring two more runs to give the Raiders a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.

The Lady Tigers went in order in the bottom of the sixth.  In the top of the seventh, Steenbeke came in to pitch and allowed just a harmless walk before getting the side out.  In the bottom of the inning, Macey drilled a line drive to center field that got through to the fence for a triple.  After one out, Steenbeke hit a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game at 5-5.  Birsic then walked and Miller singled to center field.  With the count at 2-2, Cotter lifted the next pitch over the right center field fence to win the game, 8-5.

TITANS TAME LADY TIGERS, 2-0

by Rick Meister

The Shaler Area Titans used effective pitching and timely hitting to defeat the North Allegheny Tiger Varsity Softball Team 2-0 yesterday at Shaler’s Hilltop Field.  Following  scoreless first, second, and third innings, Shaler got the only runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Senior RHP Deanna Tritinger allowed only four Shaler hits in the contest.

North Allegheny had a strong threat in the top of the third when they put runners on first and second on back-to-back singles by sophomore center fielder Jordan Macey and junior right fielder Jenna Darrah, but the Tigers could not come up with the key hit to drive them home. The Tigers also left a runner in scoring position in the top of the fourth when junior third baseman Kelsey Birsic singled and was advanced to second on a well-executed sacrifice by junior left fielder Hannah Jones, who was called out at first on a razor-close play.  Once again, a Tiger fly ball ended the threat.

Shaler finally broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double to the left field fence by winning pitcher Abby Nichter and an RBI single up the middle by right fielder Britt DeFazio.  Neither team threatened seriously again, and the Titans held on for the hard-fought victory.

With the loss, the Tigers fell to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in section play.  NA will host the Seneca Valley Raiders tonight at 7:00 PM at the NASH Softball Field in the first night game to be played there.  This game had originally been scheduled for last Friday, but was postponed due to weather conditions.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 pm.

LADY TIGERS FALL TO MT. LEBANON, 4-3

by Rick Meister

In an exciting, well-played game at Jefferson Middle School in Mt. Lebanon, the North Allegheny varsity Softball Team suffered its first defeat of the season to the host Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils by a 4-3 margin.

The Tigers scored first in the top of the first on a one-out infield single by junior right fielder Jenna Darrah and an RBI double into deep right center field by senior pitcher Amber Steenbeke.  Mt. Lebanon came back with two runs in the bottom of the first when first baseman Bree Tongel singled to right center field to drive in center fielder Ashley Darabant, who had doubled to left center, and pitcher Gina Badolato, who had walked.

The score remained 2-1 until the seventh inning.  North Allegheny recaptured the lead on a one-out double to right center field by senior second baseman Christy Cotter.  Sophomore center fielder Jordan Macey singled to right to drive in Cotter to tie the game at 2-2.  Following a steal of second by Macey, Steenbeke once again delivered in the clutch to drive in Macey with a long single to right field, giving the Tigers a 3-2 advantage going into the bottom of the seventh.  Mt. Lebanon, however, had their own seventh inning rally to come away with the win.  Right fielder Alexa Hagenbrockhit a one-out single to left field.  Pinch hitter Julz Tindal walked on a 3-2 pitch to put runners on first and second.  Darabant then hit her second double of the game to deep left center field to give the Blue Devils a walk-off victory.

Both teams played solidly in the field, and the game had a definite playoff atmosphere as the teams battled back and forth.  The loss dropped the Tigers’ record to 3-1 as they begin section play against Seneca Valley on Friday.  The game will mark the first home night game in NA history with a ceremony planned before the game.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 pm.

LADY TIGERS BLANK LATROBE, 3-0, FOR SECOND STRAIGHT

by Rick Meister

The North Allegheny Varsity Softball team topped the Greater Latrobe Wildcats by a 3-0 margin yesterday at Latrobe to raise their record to 2-0 as their odyssey along Route 30 continued following Wednesday’s season-opening victory at Hempfield.  Senior pitcher Amber Steenbeke picked up her first win of the season by limiting Latrobe to just five hits while striking out six and walking just one.

The Tigers scored their first two runs in the top of the third when with one out sophomore shortstop Stephanie Hnat was safe at first when an errant throw on her well-placed bunt allowed her to reach base. A force at second erased Hnat, but sophomore center fielder Jordan Macey was safe at first on the play.  Following  a steal of second by Macey, junior right fielder Jenna Darrah reached on an infield single with Macey advancing to third.  Darrah stole second, putting Tiger runners on second and third with two outs.  Steenbeke then aided her own cause by singling to right center to drive in both Macey and Darrah to give NA a 2-0 advantage.

The Tigers added an important insurance run in the fourth inning on back-to-back two-out doubles by senior second baseman Christy Cotter and junior left fielder Hannah Jones.

Once again the NA defense came up solidly in the shutout, playing errorless  ball highlighted by two run-saving catches of line drives, one by Hnat as she ranged up the middle and one by junior first baseman Toni Miller on a shoe-top backhand to end a Latrobe threat in the bottom of the fifth.  The Tigers also turned their second double play in as many games, a 5-4-1 play to throw out a Latrobe bunter and nail a base runner attempting to advance to third on the play.

With the win, the Tigers raised their record to 2-0.  North Allegheny will entertain Bethel Park on Monday at the Senior High field.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
