TIGERS TROUNCE TROJANS, 56-6, ADVANCE TO PIAA SEMIFINALS North Allegheny football flexed its muscle in the PIAA quarterfinals on Friday night, steamrolling the McDowell Trojans, 56-6. After the Trojans scored on their opening possession, North Allegheny rattled off 56 unanswered points, advancing to the PIAA Semifinals next Saturday against the Wilson Bulldogs. Wright Automotive Player of the Game and quarterback Mack Leftwich was nearly perfect, completing 14 of 15 passes for 284 yards. He was responsible for six touchdowns on the night, throwing for five and rushing for one. Gregg Garrity nabbed seven passes for 128 yards and a pair of scores to lead the receiving corps. After receiving the opening kick, McDowell methodically drove right down the field on a 14-play, 65 yard drive. The Trojans controlled the ball and the clock during the opening quarter, converting a pair of fourth downs, and holding the ball for over eight minutes on their initial possession. The march culminated in a four yard touchdown plunge by Khyre Drayer. The subsequent extra point was blocked and the Trojans held a 6-0 lead before North Allegheny touched the football. The Tigers fired back with a nine-play drive, capped off by the first of two Skylar Cox touchdown receptions on the night. Leftwich found Cox from four yards out, and zipped a strike to his tight end amid heavy traffic in the end zone. Ben Ziolkowski’s point after was true, and the Tigers led, 7-6. Following the score, North Allegheny began to capitalize on McDowell miscues, turning a three and out, an interception, and a pair of Trojan fumbles into four additional touchdowns on their way a 35-point second quarter to put the game out of reach. On defense, Kevin Edwards led the linebacking corps with nine tackles and a forced fumble. Layne Skundrich followed up his 15-tackle performance against Woodland Hills with seven and a half tackles against McDowell. Brendan Coniker and Elijah Zeise each picked off a Trojan pass, with Zeise punctuating the defensive effort on a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter. Despite allowing the Trojans’ score on the opening possession of the game, the North Allegheny defense allowed just 90 yards for the remainder of the game. The Tigers dominated the line of scrimmage and blew up numerous plays in the backfield for losses. Highly touted McDowell running back James Connor, a Pitt recruit, came into the game with over 1,600 rushing yards and a season average of more than 11 yards a carry. He was held to 36 yards on nine touches out of the backfield. The victory boosted the North Allegheny season record to 14-0. The Tigers are now an incredible 43-2 since the beginning of the 2010 season. Next up, North Allegheny will await face Wilson High School on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm at Altoona's Mansion Park.
