WPIAL CLASS AAA PLAYOFF BRACKETS

TIGERS LOSE PLAYOFF HEARTBREAKER TO KISKI IN OVERTIME

Collaborative effort with Boys Soccer Contributor

(10/22/12) The North Allegheny Boys Soccer Team took the Section 1 champion Kiski Cavaliers to the brink and beyond in a playoff classic, but in an overtime shootout the Tigers fell to Kiski Area, 1-0.  Last night marked the second straight year in which the Cavaliers edged the Tigers in the opening round of the playoffs in a game where North Allegheny controlled the field most of the night.  North Allegheny started strong and dominated the first half with numerous chances, highlighted by shots from Ryan Fulton, Alex Correa, and Chris Richards.  Junior Alex Dorazio set up several of those chances with hustling play from the right-wing and accurate crossing passes.

Despite being outshot in the first half, Kiski began to pick up the action early in the second half, but the Tigers maintained their advantage in scoring chances and corner kicks throughout the half.  Peter Tobias and Dorazio served several balls into the box and Sean Dickerson had a few head-ball chances on corner kicks that missed high of the Kiski net.  Duncan Riding, Fulton, and Tobias all tested Kiski goalkeeper Brandon Smail, but the junior net-minder was up to the challenge and made some spectacular saves to keep the game tied.  With about 25 minutes to go in regulation, Smail made back-to-outstanding saves that denied Riding and Fulton.  With time winding down in the second half, Kiski mounted a last second chance, but Tigers goalie Joe Murphy came through with a save to send the game to overtime, 0-0.

Throughout the game, Murphy teamed up with the back line of Dickerson, Joe Durante, Suyash Fulay, and Steve Binning to keep Kiski off the board in regulation and in overtime.  Seemingly all over the field, Dickerson was always in the right place to help the Tigers clear any Kiski threats and shadow the Cavaliers leading scorer, Dakota Lange.  For his efforts on defense, and for providing the occasional shot on offense, Dickerson was named the Wright Automotive Player of the game.

The Tigers had an excellent chance early in the first overtime, but Tobias was turned away on another brilliant, diving save by Smail. In the second overtime, the teams traded possession but with most of the action controlled by the defenses the game was destined for the penalty kick shootout.  NA scored on its first three chances by Binning, Fulton and Dickerson, but was denied on its next two attempts. Kiski converted four consecutive chances courtesy of Matt Dsiadosz, Ian Moorhead, Dakota Lange and Tyler Graham to cement a victory against North Allegheny for the second year in a row.

Kiski improves to 15-2-2 on the season advances to face the Pine-Richland Rams in the quarterfinals.  North Allegheny finishes the season with their best record in several years at 10-4-4, and once again gave their all in a playoff game that they dominated but were unable to win.  Thanks to this year’s senior and good luck to the underclassmen who look to carry on the North Allegheny tradition in 2013.

2012 WPIAL BOYS' SOCCER

The Tigers will compete again in the WPIAL Class AAA along with 34 other teams.  The top three teams and ties that CANNOT be broken will enter the WPIAL tournament.  All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the following method:  Three points for a win, one point for a tie.  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and each will be declared champions and receive a section winner's plaque.  Those teams will enter the tournament;  and if the teams tied for first place equal the maximum for sectional qualification, NO OTHER TEAMS WILL BE ENTERED INTO THE TOURNAMENT.  In the event of a tie for second, third or in some cases fourth place, the Tie Breaker System will be employed.  If a tie persists, head-to-head competiton will determine the qualifier.  In the event of a multiple tie, the following tie breaker will be employed:

1.  Section records of the tied teams will be compiled.
2.  The team that has the best won/loss record in head-to-head competition among the tied teams only will be the qualifier.
3.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter the tournament.

Teams that qualify for the tournament should be aware that they may be placed in a preliminary round and may be assigned to play the weekend prior to the first round of the tournament.

Each game will consist of two equal halves of 40 minutes each.  Regular season game overtimes shall be resolved by playing no more than two "sudden victory" overtime periods not to exceed ten minutes each.  If a tie persists at that point, the game is over and is recorded as a tie.  In post-season play, the procedure to determine a game winner will be the state adopted method of the National Federation Soccer Rules Book.

PIAA Qualifiers - only two teams qualify, the WPIAL Champion and runner-up.

Players and coaches who receive hard red cards and are disqualified from any game by the game official will not be permitted to participate in the next scheduled game played by their team at the same level of competition. Repeated red card offenders will be subjected to more severe penalties. It is strongly recommended that any ejected coach or player be required to report to the athletic director and/or the principal the next morning. The Principal and or Athletic Director is reminded of the importance of completing and returning ASAP the required PIAA ejection response form.

The PIAA Board of Directors has adopted a rule for ALL LEVELS OF SOCCER for the 2011-2012 school year that REQUIRES "that a player who receives a yellow card sit out a mandatory period of five (5) minutes as indicated on the soccer game clock".

The PIAA has established a Mercy Rule effective for the 2012 – 2013 soccer season that provides for a RUNNING CLOCK once a team gains a seven (goal) advantage over their opponent.

Boys & Girls PIAA qualifiers – In AAA, AA & A will qualify three (3) teams in BOTH BOYS AND GIRLS will advance to the PIAA tournament. The WPIAL champion, and the runner-up will advance in all three (3) classes as well as the winner in each of the third-place consolation games.

Wednesday October 17, 2012, is the final day that games may be played by all WPIAL Soccer Tournament qualifiers. Teams qualifying for the WPIAL Soccer Tournament may scrimmage any team that has also qualified and may continue to do so as long as they remain alive in the tournament.
