BIG WEEKEND FOR LADY TIGERS

(10/24/12) Last Sunday, the Lady Tigers Slow-Pitch Softball Team played four games to finish out their regular season at 8-6.  That marks the seventh consecutive season their W-L record has been over .500.

The Tigers hosted the Hampton Lady Talbots at Marshall Middle School at noon and 2 pm.  In game #1, the Tigers led 4-0 after 3 innings, but Hampton came back to make it close at 5-4, only to have the Tigers put up 7 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to win 12-8.  Leading the Tigers’ offensive attack were “back to back” homeruns by Laura Puntil, with 3 RBIs, and Courtney Wolfe with 1 RBI.  The Tigers also played some great defense.  Marlee Tyler made a great running catch on a line drive in the hole at short to start the game and Hayley Doak threw a runner out at the plate from right field in the 4th inning to stop a 4-run rally by the Talbots.

In game #2, another close contest, the Tigers were led on offense by Marlee Tyler with 3 hits, Laura Puntil with a double, a HR and 3 RBIs and Courtney Wolfe went 4 for 4.  Again, the Tiger defense came up big with Ashley Tresky throwing out two runners, the first, trying to stretch a single into a double, from the fence in left-center field and later in the game; she took a hit away from a batter by throwing out a runner at second base coming from first base.  Bethany Schopper turned a double-play at second base to end an inning.  The Tigers played some solid defense all day, winning the second game by the score of 10-6.

Then, the Tigers traveled to Montour to play the Lady Spartans at 6 PM and 8 PM.  In an exciting first game, the Tigers won 15-14, with Autumn Devine making the game ending catch in left field, stranding Spartans at second and third base.  The Tigers continued to play good defense.  Autumn Devine turned a double play, catching a fly ball in left field on the run, throwing to Marlee Tyler at shortstop and Marlee throwing to Melissa Sharlow at home to get the runner tagging from third base.  Autumn made another great running catch in left field to take a hit away from a Spartan batter.  Leading the offensive attack for the Tigers were Bethany Schopper with 3 hits, a walk, and an RBI, Kristen Kovalchik with a HR and 4 RBIs, Katelyn Cerutti with a single, two doubles and 3 RBIs, Rachel Brown with 3 singles and 2 RBIs, and Melissa Sharlow with a single, a double and 1 RBI.

It was very cold at the start of game #2, but the Tigers came out ready to play.  Their bats were “on fire”, scoring 12 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning to take a 16-1 lead.  They scored 6 more in the 4th to lead  22-3.  The Spartans did not quit, scoring 10 runs in the top of the 5th to cut the score to 22-13.  In the bottom of the 5th, the Tigers had three straight singles by Ashley Tresky, Marlee Tyler and Bethany Schopper to end the game on the 10-run rule, 23-13.  Also leading the offensive attack for the Tigers were Marlee Tyler with 3 singles and a double, Bethany Schopper with 4 RBIs, Katelyn Ceruti with 2 doubles, a homerun, and 4 RBIs, Ashley Tresky had 3 singles, and Kristen Kovalchik had a single, a double, and 3 RBIs.  Once again, the defense came up with some “big” plays.  Ashley Tresky threw out a runner from left-center, who was trying to go from first to third on a base hit.  The outfield made two great catches to take runs away from the Spartans.  Courtney Dollhopf made a great catch in right-center to take at least one run away and Courtney Wolfe made a great “over-the-head” catch in right field to take at least one run away.

The Tigers will play this Saturday at Fairhaven Field in Montour at 1:30 pm as they begin defense of their 2011 title.  Please come out and support your Lady Tigers.
