LADY TIGERS EDGED BY FOX CHAPEL IN WPIAL SEMIFINALS

by Lee Mohn

(10/24/12) The Lady Tigers dictated the pace of this playoff match-up, but a late game penalty corner lifted the Fox Chapel Foxes to a 1-0 upset of North Allegheny in the Class AAA Semifinals on Wednesday night.  The Tigers received six penalty corners in the first half but could only produce only one shot on goal out of those opportunities.  The Tigers dominated the action and receiving good efforts from Emily Humiston, Hannah Downing, Rachel Wetzel and Kailey Vogl

In the second half, the Tigers just missed taking the lead when Megan Grzyb could not get her shot past goalkeeper Alana George.  Both teams battled evenly in the second half, but with 11:17 remaining, the Foxes converted a corner when Kate Hardiman slapped a hard shot past goalie Morgan Mendenhall from 15 yards out to score the only goal of the game.  After the goal the Tigers could not muster much offense as the Foxes packed 10 players in the circle.  Michelle Murray was named the Wright Automotve player of the game for her strong defensive effort.

The loss brings the Lady Tigers season to a sudden end with a 12-5-2 record.  North Allegheny did earn another section championship this season and will eye the 2013 season for a return trip to the WPIAL Finals.

2012 WPIAL FIELD HOCKEY

The Lady Tigers will compete again in Class AAA of the WPIAL along with 11 other teams.  The top two teams in each section will enter the WPIAL Tournament.  All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the following method:  Three points for a win and one point for a tie.  Ties for first place will not be broken and ALL tied teams will each receive a section winner's plaque.  In the event of a multiple tie for second, third, or fourth place, head-to-head competition will be used to break the tie.

EXAMPLE:

Team A is clearly first.  Teams B, C, and D are all tied with identical records for second place.  In the head-to-head competition among the three teams, Team B is 3-1, Team C is 2-2, and Team D is 1-3.  Team B is the second place team and is entered into the tournament.

Failure to break the tie by applying the point system will result in applying a point differential system to a plus or minus five to all section games played.  If this procedure does not break the tie, a playoff game will be held.

Duration of the game shall be a maximum of sixty minutes played in two equal halves.  All regular season games ending in a tie will be subject to the following Overtime Procedures:
1.  Prior to the overtime period there shall be a 5-minute intermission
2.  The home team captain calls the coin toss and the winner chooses choice of goal or to take possession of the ball.
3.  Teams will be limited to six field players and a goalkeeper.
4.  If a player was disqualified (red card) during the regulation game,  that tem must play short throughout the overtime.  If a player was suspended (yellow card) the team shall play short until the suspension time is completed.
5.  Only four defenders will be allowed behind the end line on a penalty corner.

The overtime will be 15 minutes "SUDDEN VICTORY".  Regular season games tied after the 15 minute overtime period are recorded as a tie.  There will be no team time-outs, even if a time has unused time outs.  There will be unlimited substitutions.

NOTE:  There have been rules changes approved by the Field Hockey Rules Committee.  Please check the WPIAL website (www.wpial.org)  for details.
