TIGERS LOCK UP SECTION WITH WIN OVER SHALER

North Allegheny captured at least a share of its fourth consecutive conference crown, defeating Shaler, 55-7.  The Tigers scored early and often on Friday night against a young, inexperienced Titans team.  Wright Automotive Player of the Game Alex DeCiantis had three first half touchdown runs, as North Allegheny raced out to a 48-0 halftime advantage.  DeCiantis netted 167 yards on just 12 carries in limited duty, as the Tigers used a plethora of running backs, including Josh Bergman, Sean Idowu, Nick Cully and Chris Como to carry the load throughout the night.

Quarterback Mack Leftwich also played sparingly, completing six passes for 131 yards, hitting Brendan Coniker and Greg Baum for a touchdown apiece.  Jason Buchert and Ben Ziolkowski alternated place kicking duties throughout the night.  Overall, the Tigers totaled 510 yards, and 23 first downs.  They did not punt.

On the other side of the ball, North Allegheny used its size and speed advantage to stymie the Titans' attack, especially on the ground.  Shaler was unable to put points on the board until the waning moments of the game when running back Josh Crawford plunged in for a one yard score, ending the Tigers' streak of 25 consecutive quarters without allowing a touchdown.

Brett Neugebauer stopped the Titans' best chance to score in the first half, picking off a pass in the end zone.  Neugebauer also capped off the ensuing scoring drive with an eight yard touchdown run, giving the Tigers a comfortable 48-0 lead at halftime.

The dominating performance by North Allegheny extended their win streak to eight games.  The Tigers will finish the regular season portion of their schedule next Friday night when they welcome the Indians of North Hills to Newman Stadium.  Both schools will be coordinating a canned food and coat drive.  Additionally, it will also be Breast Cancer Awareness night.  More information for each can be found on the main page of the North Allegheny Sports Network.  Kickoff for the regular season finale against North Hills is scheduled for 7:30.

TIGERS AIM FOR CONFERENCE CROWN,
VISIT SHALER

North Allegheny eyes another conference championship tonight as the Tigers visit the Shaler Titans.  The two-time WPIAL champions obviously have loftier goals in mind for the 2012 season, but the first rung on the championship ladder can be climbed with a win over the Titans to secure the Northern Eight Conference crown.   Last season, North Allegheny claimed the conference title with a 34-17 road win over Shaler in week eight and the Tigers have a chance to duplicate that again tonight.

Under first year head coach Chris Siegle, the Titans are in a rebuilding phase and have suffered some growing pains on their way to an 0-7 record and 0-6 mark in conference play.  Siegle is a former Shaler quarterback from the late 90’s and played professionally in the American Indoor Football League with the Raleigh Rebels.  The Titans had a successful run under former head coach Neil Gordon who led the Titans to three playoff appearances in four seasons, but with brand new set of players and coaches, Siegle is trying to rebuild the Shaler football program from the ground up.  The lone returning starter on offense for the Titans is offensive lineman Ross Budziszewski.   The 253-pound senior helps pave the way for Shaler running backs Louie Iezzi and Wayde Barkey.  Iezzi has rushed for 137 yards this season and a score while Barkey has played more in a complimentary role.  The leading ground gainer for the Titans is their quarterback Brad Good who has rushed for 234 yards and a touchdown.  Through the air, Good has passed for 616 yards and four touchdowns while tossing six interceptions.  Good has been the main source of offense for Shaler but may miss tonight’s game against North Allegheny.  The senior quarterback suffered a lower body injury last week which could thrust junior quarterback Josh Crawford into the starter’s role.  Crawford’s receiving options will be brothers Bill and Rob Reinheimer.  The duo has combined for 371 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

With an offense that averages nine points per game and likely to be without its regular quarterback, it could be a long night for the Titans facing a North Allegheny defense that hasn’t allowed a touchdown in 22 consecutive quarters.  Among many contributors in an air tight defense, linebacker Kevin Edwards is the leading tackler with 45 stops this year.  Lineman Jeremy Gonzales tops the team in sacks with 7.5 and defensive back Elijah Zeise has the most thefts with two interceptions.

North Allegheny’s offense has marched through some of the best defenses in Quad-A and tonight faces a defense that has allowed 46 points per game.  It’s been a struggle for the Titans to stop just about anyone and they will find the going tough against quarterback Mack Leftwich and the Tigers offense.  Leftwich has passed for 1,349 yards and 16 touchdowns while rushing for another 255 yards and four scores.  Despite missing last week’s game, senior Greg Garrity remains the Tigers leading receiver with 23 catches for 451 yards and six touchdowns.  Brendan Coniker and Elijah Zeise are two more glue-fingered threats that can go deep or venture over the middle for the clutch first down.  Tight-ends Zach Lyon, Skyler Cox and Kevin Edwards will also get involved in the passing game, in addition to plowing open holes for Alex DeCiantis and the Tigers rushing attack.  The senior tailback has run for 696 yards and eight touchdowns behind a mammoth offensive line that consists of junior Patrick Kugler, junior Nick James, center Jeremy Gonzales, senior Duke Lundahl and senior Taylor Nikithser.  North Allegheny averages 37 points per game.

The Tigers invade Mt. Royal Stadium tonight and hope to leave Shaler with a conference title at hand.  Kickoff is slated for 7:30 pm.  Listen to all the action live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network with Randy Gore and Rick Meister.  The pre-game show hits the air at 7:10 pm.
