DEFENSE DISPATCHES WILSON, TIGERS GOING BACK TO HERSHEY The North Allegheny Tigers are going back to Hershey, attempting to capture a state championship for the second time in three seasons. The Tigers rode a dominating defense and an unstoppable offense to a 45-10 thrashing of the Wilson bulldogs on Saturday afternoon in Altoona. North Allegheny held Wilson to just 103 yards of total offense. Layne Skundrich was the most active defender with 11.5 tackles, including a sack. Patrick Kugler, Jeremy Gonzales, and Kevin Edwards made their home in the Bulldog backfield all afternoon, tallying a combined 13.5 tackles, including six tackles for loss. Offensively, Wright Automotive Player of the Game, running back Alex DeCiantis, led the Tigers on the ground with 111 yards on 22 carries. Mack Leftwich was also a catalyst in the balanced attack, completing 17 of 28 passes for 217 yards, while being responsible for four touchdowns. The game began ominously for the Tigers, as Wilson ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown, putting North Allegheny in a hole seconds into the contest. After both teams stalled on their opening offensive series, Gregg Garrity returned a punt 20 yards to the Wilson 16, giving the Tigers fantastic field position. Three plays later, DeCiantis’ two yard touchdown run knotted the score at 7-7. While Wilson spun their tires against the North Allegheny defense, the Tigers offense marched down field on consecutive long scoring drives, enjoying a two touchdown lead midway through the second quarter. Just before halftime, a Bulldog drive stalled at midfield, allowing the Tigers offense another chance to score with just 17 seconds before the break. A completed hook and ladder play, coupled with a roughing the passer penalty gave North Allegheny one untimed down from the Wilson 20. Ben Ziolkowski trotted out and coolly buried a 37-yard field goal as the clock expired, giving the Tigers a commanding 24-7 lead as they headed to the locker room. Wilson cut into the lead with a third quarter field goal, but that was as close as they would get, as North Allegheny blew the Bulldogs away with a 21-point fourth quarter on touchdowns by Brendan Coniker, Garrity, and Sean Idowu. Idowu also reeled in an interception to help set up his touchdown run. The win sends North Allegheny into a state title bout with the Coatesville Red Raiders. Coatesville defeated La Salle College 42-35 on Friday to earn their spot in the championship game. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm at Hersheypark Stadium.
