LADY TIGERS SEND SENIORS OUT WINNERS,
BEAT NORTH HILLS

Alexis Aiken’s 25 points, 12 rebounds and 5 steals helped North Allegheny coast past rival North Hills, 53-31, in their regular season home finale.  Nine different players scored for the Lady Tigers, as they now focus their attention on the WPIAL playoffs, scheduled to begin next weekend.

Friday night was senior night for the Lady Tigers as North Allegheny recognized all five seniors prior to the game.  To further commemorate the occasion, Coach McConnell trotted out an all-senior starting lineup, with Alexis Aiken, Chrissy Figan, Jessica Mancosh, Sarah Miller, and Sophie Seel on the court at tip-off.  After a cold first quarter shooting the basketball, North Allegheny rebounded with an 11-2 run to begin the second quarter.  At halftime, the Lady Tigers held a comfortable 30-17 lead, aided by 17 North Hills turnovers.  Mancosh knocked down a pair of three pointers, while juniors Sam Blue and Jamie Robatisin were nimble around the hoop, with a lay-in apiece.

The halftime advantage was punctuated by an Aiken basket off a feed from junior Maddie Nellis just before the buzzer sounded.  Nellis ended the game with 5 points on 2 of 3 shooting, while dishing out 6 assists.  After the break, the Lady Tigers expanded their lead, cruising to victory over the Indians.  Near the end of the game, Coach McConnell allowed the five seniors to again be recognized individually, as each left the game to a cheering ovation from the North Allegheny fans.  Aiken was named Wright Automotive Player of the Game for her monster night in her final home game at North Allegheny

The Lady Tigers end the regular season with a (17-5) record and will now await their playoff fate next week.  Pairings are scheduled to be released on Tuesday night.  Be sure to check the North Allegheny Sports Network for further playoff information as soon as it is made available.

LADY TIGERS USE STRONG FIRST QUARTER TO BURY RAIDERS, 68-48

(2/7/12) The Lady Tigers locked up third place in Section 3 on Tuesday night, thanks to their 68-48 victory at Seneca Valley.  Alexis Aiken led all scorers with 24 points, splitting her points evenly between the halves.  Sophomore guard Taylor Brennan also posted double figures, pouring in 13 points, all in the first half.  After her sizzling performance, she was lauded with the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.  In all, ten Lady Tigers scored in the game, as they shot a collectively 48% from the field.

The first quarter began with North Allegheny on fire.  As a team, they shot 75%, racing out to a 24-4 lead at the end of the period.  The offensive explosion was powered by Aiken’s 10 points in the opening quarter.  Brennan was a co-catalyst, knocking down a pair of three pointers, in addition to sinking all three free throws after she was fouled on a third attempt.  Senior sharpshooter Jessica Mancosh and junior point guard Maddie Nellis were also successful from long range in the first half, helping North Allegheny enjoy a 35-18 advantage at halftime.

Seneca Valley could get no closer in the second half as the Lady Tigers cruised to victory.  North Allegheny punctuated their effort midway through the fourth quarter when Aiken hit a streaking Nellis with a nice baseball pass off an out of bounds play.  Nellis made an over-the-shoulder catch, converted an off-balance lay-up, and added a free throw to complete a much-deserved three point play.

With the victory, North Allegheny improves to 16-5 and clinches third place in Section 3, with one section contest remaining.  The Lady Tigers will be back in action Friday night against conference rival North Hills.  Tip off from the North Allegheny Senior High School gymnasium is scheduled for 6:30 pm and will be broadcast on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

OAKLAND CATHOLIC RALLIES PAST LADY TIGERS

Oakland Catholic closed Friday’s contest on a 15-5 run, surging past North Allegheny, 46-41.  North Allegheny scored the first thirteen points of the contest and led most of the way.  However, in the fourth quarter, the Eagles’ defense held the Lady Tigers to just one field goal, paving the way for the comeback victory.  Chrissy Figan led the Lady Tigers with 11 points.  Fellow senior Alexis Aiken scored 10, while pulling down 15 rebounds for yet another double-double.  Her performance netted the Wright Automotive Player of the Game award.  Sophomore Jackie Dallier narrowly missed a double-double, with 9 points and 9 rebounds.  Oakland Catholic’s Bobbi Baker led all scorers with 20 points.

The beginning of the game was all North Allegheny, as they held the Eagles without a field goal until the 7:51 mark of the second quarter.  Most of the early damage was done in the paint, with Aiken and Dallier hitting on layups.  Halfway through the second period, Jessica Mancosh knocked down a pair of threes, giving North Allegheny their largest lead of the night at 27-12.  Oakland Catholic quickly responded with an 8-0, cutting the lead to only seven at halftime.  Despite shooting a paltry 18% from the field for the first half, free throws kept Oakland Catholic in the game.  The Eagles were 6 of 11 from the line, while North Allegheny did not attempt a foul shot in the opening half.

After matching the Eagles shot for shot in the third quarter, North Allegheny went cold to close the contest.  Upon taking the lead, Oakland Catholic held onto the basketball, effectively shortening the game, and forcing the Lady Tigers to foul.  The tactic worked, as the Eagles sank free throws late to enhance their lead in the section, and preserve their undefeated campaign.

North Allegheny will return to action on Tuesday at Seneca Valley.  The game will be broadcast on the North Allegheny Sports Network.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 pm.

LADY TIGERS TAME WILDCATS, 76-34

(1/27/12) North Allegheny bounced back from a tough loss to Pine-Richland earlier in the week with a dominating 76-34 win over Latrobe on Thursday night.  The road win jumps the Lady Tigers record to 13-4 on the season while the Wildcats fall to 3-13 for the year.  North Allegheny will be back at home tonight for another non-section contest with the Penn Hills Indians.  The Lady Tigers faced and defeated the Indians at the NA Tip-Off Tournament by a 59-34 final on December 10.

AIKEN SCORES 1000TH POINT IN LOSS TO PINE-RICHLAND

(1/23/12) Alexis Aiken was the only Lady Tiger in double figures on Monday night, netting 14 points while pulling down 11 rebounds.  However, it was not enough as North Allegheny fell at home to Pine-Richland 62-52.  The Rams benefited from a 27-point 4th quarter, aided by countless trips to the free throw line, to roar back from a 41-31 deficit late in the third quarter.  Jackie Dallier contributed 9 points and 6 rebounds in limited action, while Jamie Robatisin scored 8 points off the bench for the Lady Tigers.

Play began at a furious pace, with both teams scoring at a rapid clip.  Midway through the opening quarter, Alexis Aiken knocked down a three pointer from the left side of the arc, pushing her past 1,000 points for her career.  She received a standing ovation from both North Allegheny and Pine-Richland fans alike for her accomplishment.  To further commemorate the occasion, the North Allegheny Sports Network awarded her Wright Automotive Player of the Game.  With both teams pouring in points seemingly at will, the first quarter horn sounded with North Allegheny holding a slight 18-17 advantage.  Action settled down in the second quarter and both teams went to the locker room deadlocked 27-27 at the half.

The Lady Tigers began the second half on a 14-4 run, but Pine-Richland quickly rallied, due to their ability to get to the free throw line.  Their success from the charity stripe, particularly in the second half, proved to be the difference.  The win gave Pine-Richland a stranglehold on second place in Section 3, having also won the first contest between the two schools earlier this season.

The loss gives North Allegheny their third section loss, leaving them with an overall mark of 12-4.  They will return to the court on Friday at home against Penn Hills.  The non-section contest is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm and will be broadcast on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

GIRLS BASKETBALL COMPLETES SWEEP OF SHALER

The Lady Tigers won at Shaler in double overtime on Thursday night, 50-44, to maintain their third place spot in Section 3.  Senior Jessica Mancosh scored 19 points, including five three-pointers, in the victory.  Alexis Aiken contributed 13 points and 9 rebounds, narrowly missing another double-double.  North Allegheny benefited from an eighteen point third quarter, aided by a pair of Mancosh threes, erasing a halftime deficit.  Additionally, Shaler's inefficiency from the charity line assisted in the victory.  Throughout regulation and both overtimes, the Titans shot a paltry 4 of 14 from the free throw stripe.

With a tight game entering the fourth quarter, neither team gained any advantage, as just six points were scored in the frame.  Likewise, both offenses struggled throughout the first overtime, as two free throws by Mancosh were offset by a layup from Shaler's Andie Lydon.  In the second overtime, Mancosh knocked down back to back shots from beyond the arc, pushing the Lady Tigers ahead for good.  Late free throws by Maddie Nellis solidified the hard-fought victory and gave North Allegheny its first sweep of the Titans in girls basketball since the 2004-05 season

The win extends North Allegheny's current win streak to three games.  The Lady Tigers will be back in action on Monday when they host Pine-Richland, attempting to avenge a loss to the Rams from earlier this season.  The rematch will be broadcast on the North Allegheny Sports Network with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 pm.

LADY TIGERS DISMANTLE
 NORTH HILLS, 62-28

(1/16/12) The Lady Tigers forced 27 turnovers and held North Hills to just 27-percent shooting for a one-sided, 62-28, win over the Lady Indians on Monday night.  North Allegheny jumped out to a 19-8 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, coasting to the victory.  On offense, North Allegheny was led by Alexis Aiken and Taylor Brennan who posted 13 points apiece.

Nine different Tigers scored points in the blowout, including Chrissy Figan and Jamie Robatisin who notched eight points each.  Robatisin was a force on the boards as well, reeling in eight rebounds.  Point guard Maddie Nellis hampered the Indians with six steals on defense and set up teammates on the offensive side of the ball with six assists.  For North Hills, Melanie Lindsey provided the lion’s share of the points for the Indians with 13 points and six rebounds.

The victory improves North Allegheny’s overall mark to 11-3 on the season and 4-2 in section play.  North Hills falls to 3-11 overall and 0-6 in Section 3.  The Lady Tigers will look to win their second straight road game when they visit Shaler on Thursday night.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30 pm.

FOURTH QUARTER LIFTS LADY TIGERS
OVER RAIDERS, 41-34

(1/13/12)  In a sloppy, turnover-filled affair, North Allegheny prevailed over visiting Seneca Valley, 41-34, thanks to a 17-point fourth quarter.  On a night where they had difficulty converting field goals, the Lady Tigers made up for it with a successful game at the foul line.  North Allegheny made several key free throws down the stretch to distance themselves from the upset-minded Raiders.

Jessica Mancosh sank a pair of threes in the first quarter, opening an early 12-5 lead for North Allegheny.  However, Seneca Valley fought back to close within one at halftime before North Allegheny pulled away late.  The free throw line was good to the Lady Tigers, as they converted 15 of their 18 opportunities.  Maddie Nellis helped control the clock late, keeping the ball away from Raider defenders.  She was also 4-4 from the line, all in the fourth quarter.  Her free throw shooting, to go along with 6 assists earned her Wright Automotive Player of the Game honors. Taylor Brennan and Jackie Dallier were also perfect from the charity stripe.  Dallier missed a double-double by two points, finishing with 8 points and 10 rebounds.  Alexis Aiken was the only North Allegheny player in double figures, with 11 points.    Alex Karika had 20 points for the Raiders.

With the hard-fought victory, the Lady Tigers advance their record to 10-3, while their 3-2 section record ties them with Shaler for third place in the conference.  North Allegheny will be back in action on Monday at North Hills when they take on the rival Indians.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

NORTH ALLEGHENY SURVIVES TORNADOS, 51-38

(1/6/12) Senior Alexis Aiken poured in 20 points, while grabbing 15 rebounds, to lead North Allegheny past section rival Butler, 51-38.  In arguably her best performance of the season, the senior was also a force on defense, finishing the night with 5 blocks and 4 steals to earn Wright Automotive Player of the Game honors.  Sophomore Taylor Brennan was the only other player in double figures for the Lady Tigers.  She finished with 16 points, scoring 10 in the first half.  Junior Maddie Nellis again compiled a clean game from her point guard position, committing just two turnovers, while running around and through the Butler defense.  Sophomore forward Jackie Dallier added 8 rebounds off the bench.

North Allegheny took control from the start, racing out to a 18-5 advantage following the first quarter.  The Lady Tigers ballooned their lead in large part to twelve Butler turnovers in the first half.  The Golden Tornado closed to within 10 early in the second quarter after banking in a three pointer, but senior Jessica Mancosh quickly answered with a trey of her own, forcing Butler to call timeout.  From there, it was all North Allegheny, with the Lady Tigers in command at 33-14 at the break.  One of the highlights of the first half was Brennan completing a four-point play, making a three pointer and sinking the subsequent free throw after being pushed to the ground.

Butler began to claw their way back into the game, courtesy of a 12-2 run to start the second half.  The Golden Tornado made things slightly interesting in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to single digits.  With just over three minutes to go in the contest, Butler's Samantha Marak sank a three pointer to bring the margin within eight at 45-37.  However, a lone free throw was all the offense they could muster for the remainder of the game, as North Allegheny held on for their ninth victory of the season.

Butler's loss drops their overall record to 4-7, while they sit at 1-3 in the conference.  Conversely, the win boosts North Allegheny's section record to 2-1, a game and a half behind conference leader Oakland Catholic.  Currently, the Eagles sit atop the section standings at 4-0.  The Lady Tigers will have a shot to hand them their first section loss on Monday, when the teams meet in Oakland at 7:30 pm.

LADY TIGERS TIGERS FINISH STRONG TO GOBBLE UP BIG MACS, 70-29

(1/2/12) The Lady Tigers overcame a slow start on Monday night with a strong finish to batter the Canon-McMillan Big Macs, 70-29, in a non-section affair on the road.  The cold and icy weather conditions outside the Canon-Mac gymnasium mirrored the play in the early going of this contest.  However, North Allegheny overcame their first half shooting woes with hustling defense and exceptional offensive rebounding.  The Lady Tigers forced 29 turnovers and dominated the boards, 39-22.  NA’s offensive rebounding margin was 18-7 on the night, with most of the second chance point opportunities provided by Jackie Dallier who led the Tigers with 10 rebounds.

Both teams labored to score points in the first quarter as Canon-McMillan held an 8-5 edge after the opening stanza.  The Lady Tigers hit just 1-of-15 from the field in the first quarter, but began to find their groove in the second period.  Timely buckets by Chrissy Figan in the second quarter put a little bounce in NA’s step as the Lady Tigers charged to a 25-16 halftime lead.  Figan continued her all-around play in the second half and ended the night with 11 points and five rebounds.  For her efforts, Figan was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

Along with Figan, Alexis Aiken took the play to the Big Macs, making numerous trips to the free-throw line.  Aiken hit 8-of-9 from the charity stripe and finished the contest with a 21 point effort.  While the Lady Tigers hit only 24-percent in the first half, North Allegheny caught fire in the second half with 47-percent shooting.  No player epitomized the disparity in half-to-half shooting for NA than Jessica Mancosh.  The senior shooting guard was 0-for-4 in the first half, but torched the Big Macs with 5-of-9 shooting in the second half, dropping in all her buckets from three-point land.  Canon-McMillan’s Anna Lombardo and Brittany Hutchinson did their best to keep the game within reach by scoring nine points each, but the improving Big Macs were no match for the Tigers on this night.  The Lady Tigers turned a double-digit halftime lead into a blowout victory by game’s end.  North Allegheny outscored the Big Macs 27-2 in the fourth quarter, on their way to a 70-29 win.

The Lady Tigers improved to 8-2 with the victory while Canon-McMillan falls to 4-4 on the year.  North Allegheny returns to section play on Friday night with a meeting against the Butler Golden Tornado.  The action gets underway at 6:30 pm and will be carried live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

NA TOPPLES NORTH CATHOLIC FOR
HOLIDAY TOURNEY TITLE

(12/28/11)  Thanks to lights out shooting in the first half, the North Allegheny Lady Tigers claimed the title of their own Holiday Tournament with a 73-60 win over the North Catholic Trojanettes on Wednesday afternoon.  The Lady Tigers connected on 53% shooting in the first half, forced 16 turnovers, and raced to a 41-13 halftime lead.  North Allegheny was  led by the hot shooting of sophomore Taylor Brennan who poured in 25 points in the game, with 20 coming in the first half alone.  Brennan connected on her first seven field goals before finally missing from the floor.  For her efforts in leading the first half charge, Brennan was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

The pace of the game was set for the Tigers when senior Alexis Aiken knocked down a three-pointer to give NA the early 3-0 lead.  The three-point shooting was contagious for the Lady Tigers as NA hit 9 of 17 from beyond the arc in the half.  Along with Brennan’s four treys, Aiken connected on a two, Jessica Mancosh drained a pair, and Maddie Nellis dropped in one as well as North Allegheny torched North Catholic’s zone defense.  Defensively, the air-tight Tigers defense allowed limited space and points to the Trojanettes.  North Catholic went without a field goal for the entied second quarter and scored only three points for the period, all from the free-throw line.

In the second half, the Trojanettes altered the pace of the game by taking the ball to the cylinder and forcing the Lady Tigers into numerous fouls.  The methodical but consistent pace saw North Catholic trim NA’s lead from 28 points at halftime to 21 points heading into the fourth quarter.  Things got even tighter in the fourth as NC senior Lynzi Mueller caught fire and poured in four three-pointers and posted 20 of her 23 points in the second half.   Behind Mueller’s performance and 6-0 senior Angela Nowacki’s 24 points, the Trojanettes trickled down the North Allegheny advantage to 12 points late in the fourth quarter.  Ultimately the Tigers lead proved to be too large to overcome and North Allegheny held on for the 73-60 victory.

With the win, North Allegheny improves to 7-2 on the season while North Catholic falls to 5-3 on the year.   The Lady Tigers will return to the hardwood on Monday with a visit to Canonsburg to take on the Canon-McMillan Big Macs.  The game will be carried live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30 pm.

LADY TIGERS DOWN MEADVILLE AT
HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT

(12/27/11) Jessica Mancosh drained five three-pointers to lead the Lady Tigers to a 69-43 victory over Meadville on Tuesday afternoon.  With the win, North Allegheny will face North Catholic on Wednesday at 3:15 pm for the NA Holiday Tournament title.  Taylor Brennan led all scorers with 17 points and Alexis Aiken chipped in with 14 points and 12 rebounds for another double-double.

The Tigers opened the game with a 7-2 advantage behind four points by Jackie Dallier and a trey by Brennan.  Meadville replied with an 8-0 run to grab a 10-7 lead.  Following a timeout by NA head coach Sherri McConnell, the Lady Tigers responded with a 12-1 run to end the quarter.  From that point on, it was all North Allegheny.  The Lady Tigers' defense forced 21 turnovers and outmuscled Meadville on the boards for a 21-17 advantage in that category.

Courtesy of the red hot shooting of Mancosh, Brennan and Aiken, the Bulldogs were no match for the Tigers on this day.  Recovering from a knee injury, the performance by Mancosh was impressive as she eyed the net with pinpoint precision.  For her efforts, Mancosh was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

For the Bulldogs, they were paced by Marcadi McCoy who did some hard work down low with eight rebounds and six offensive boards.  Despite early foul trouble, DaQueisha Epps played the duration of the contest and touched double digits with 11 points.  Shauntia Pope connected on the only three-point make of the game for Meadville as the team hit only 1-fo-10 from beyond the arc.  Meanwhile, North Allegheny hit 9-of-24 from three-point land.

North Allegheny improves to 6-2 on the season while Meadville falls to 3-4 on the year.  NA's meeting with the North Catholic Trojanettes tips off at 3:15 pm on Wednesday for the Wright Automotive Holiday Tournament title.  The game will be carried live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

NA CRUSHES PETERS TOWNSHIP, 63-29

(12/22/11) In a commanding performance, the North Allegheny Lady Tigers hammered the Peters Township Indians on Thursday night with a 63-29 victory.  The Tigers leaped out of the gate in the first quarter and never looked back as seven different players touched the scorecard, all of which posting no less than five points.  The most impressive in this game was senior Alexis Aiken who was seemingly all over the floor and narrowly missed a triple-double.  Aiken posted 19 points, nine steals and eight rebounds and was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

In the opening stanza, the Tigers torched Peters Township with 59-percent shooting and forced seven turnovers to build a healthy 23-6 lead.  Sharpshooter Jessica Mancosh buried a pair of three-pointers and Maddie Nellis added another from beyond the arc.  For the game, the Tigers dropped in 39-percent from three-point land which included two treys by Taylor Brennan and another from Sophie Seel

North Allegheny’s lead would only swell as the night continued as the Lady Tigers were never realistically threatened in the contest.  Along with the terrific perimeter shooting, NA was backed by the feisty Jackie Dallier down low who corralled five rebounds and outworked defenders in a seven point effort.  Jamie Robatisin chipped in with six points on the low blocks as well.

By game’s end, the Tigers had earned a 34 point victory and their fifth win of the season to jump their record to 5-2.  Peters Township falls to 4-2 on the year.  North Allegheny will have the weekend off before returning to action on Tuesday afternoon at the Wright Automotive Holiday Tournament with a meeting against Meadville.  Tip-off is slated for 3:00 pm and the game will be carried live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

TIGERS BOUNCED BY RAMS, 67-61

(12/19/11) The host Rams utilized their size advantage to down North Allegheny 67-61, for their first win over the Lady Tigers since December 14, 2008.  Alexis Aiken led North Allegheny with 20 points.  Chrissy Figan poured in 14, while Jackie Dallier scored 10 in the losing effort.

The contest was tight throughout, as North Allegheny held a slim 25-24 head at halftime.  Both teams began the second half shooting at a torrid pace.  The Lady Tigers shot 4-5 in the first two minutes of the period.  The Rams were even hotter, sinking seven of their first eight shots of the half to take a 39-36 advantage.  From that point on, North Allegheny was unable to retake the lead.  Each time the Lady Tigers closed the gap, Pine-Richland would sink a much needed basket to keep the visitors at bay.  North Allegheny managed to tie the game once in the second half at 54, courtesy of a Dallier putback off a Figan miss.  However, Pine-Richland maintained their offensive focus of scoring points in the paint, with three players posting at least 15 points.

As a team, the Rams shot 46%, including 54% in the second half.  They also proved to be adept at sinking critical free throws down the stretch, handing the Lady Tigers their first section loss of the season.  With the victory, Pine-Richland improved to 3-2 on the season, while North Allegheny fell to 4-2 overall.

North Allegheny will be back in action Thursday night when they host the Peters Township Indians.  The non-section contest will get under way at 7:30 inside the North Allegheny Senior High gymnasium.  The game will also be broadcast by Randy Gore and Rick Meister on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

(12/16/11) Alexis Aiken and Taylor Brennan each posted double figures Friday night as North Allegheny cruised to a 62-43 victory in their section opener over Shaler.  Aiken led the Lady Tigers with 18 points, while pulling down 12 rebounds, her third double-double in the team's first five contests this year.  The visiting Titans returned just one starter from last year's WPIAL championship team.

The score was deadlocked at 11 near the end of the first half, when Jackie Dallier cleaned up her own missed layup, giving the Lady Tigers a two-point lead as the first quarter buzzer sounded.  From that point on, it was all North Allegheny.  A 20-5 run through the second quarter, powered by 10 points from Brennan, extended the lead to 33-16 at halftime.  The sophomore finished with 16 points on the night to earn Wright Automotive Player of the Game honors.

Following the break, the Lady Tigers continued to pour it on, receiving solid contributions up and down the lineup.  Down low, Dallier and Jamie Robatisin scored 8 and 6 points, respectively.  Guards Maddie Nellis and Chrissy Figan each added 5 points in the win.  Cate Potter led Shaler with 18 points.

The victory improves North Allegheny to 4-1 on the year, with a 1-0 record in conference play.  Next up for the Lady Tigers will be a visit Pine-Richland on Monday.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

LADY TIGERS CLAW THEIR WAY PAST
NORWIN, 46-37

(12/14/11) Alexis Aiken scored 21 points and added 7 steals Wednesday night as North Allegheny overcame some dismal shooting and a halftime deficit to dispatch Norwin, 46-37.  Aiken was the only player for either team to post double figures.  The Lady Tigers trailed by only two at the intermission while shooting 22% in the first half, including 0 for 14 from beyond the arc.  Despite the offensive woes, the North Allegheny defense forced the Knights to commit 25 turnovers, including 19 in the first half.  Both teams were neck and neck on the scoreboard for a majority of the night, until Taylor Brennan sank a three with just under two minutes remaining to give North Allegheny a six-point lead.  It was North Allegheny's only basket from long range on the night.  Late free throws by Aiken, Jessica Mancosh, and Maddie Nellis solidified the victory for the Lady Tigers, extending their record to 3-1.

North Allegheny's section opener will be this Friday night at home against Shaler.  Last season, the Lady Tigers were 0-2 against the Titans and will be looking to exact some revenge in the early going this year.  Friday's game is part of a varsity doubleheader, with the girls scheduled to tip at 6:30 pm.  If you cannot make it to the game, be sure to catch Randy Gore and Rick Meister with the call on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

NA GIRLS RUN PAST FOXES, 69-33

(12/12/11)  The Lady Tigers used a smothering defense and fast-paced offense to run past the Fox Chapel Foxes, 69-33.  North Allegheny benefited from forcing 31 turnovers, often converting fast-breaks into easy lay-ups at the other end.  In the first half, they raced out to a 40-13 halftime lead.  Taylor Brennan scored 12 of her game high 18 points in the first half, while sinking three triples from behind the arc.  Teammates Jackie Dallier, Jamie Robatisin, and Alexis Aiken, also finished in double figures, with 13, 10 and 10 points, respectively.  Aiken narrowly missed her third double-double in as many games, pulling down 9 rebounds.  Maddie Nellis had her best game of the young season from her point guard position, dishing out eight assists, while committing just three turnovers.

The win pushes North Allegheny’s record to 2-1, with their next game scheduled for Wednesday night against the Norwin Lady Knights.  Tip off is scheduled for 7:30.

McDOWELL SPOILS OPENER
FOR LADY TIGERS

(12/9/11) On a poor shooting night for both teams, the McDowell Trojans outlasted the North Allegheny Tigers, 48-46, on Friday night.  Trailing by two as time ran out, a last ditch lay-up attempt by North Allegheny's Maddie Nellis was off the mark and the Tigers dropped their opener at the Wright Automotive NA Tip-Off Tournament.  To exemplify the struggle in shooting in this contest, McDowell led the way with 26-percent shooting as NA hit only 20-percent for the game.

Defense certainly played a role in this low scoring affair in the early going.  The game remained in a scoreless deadlock until 5:30 of the first quarter when McDowell's Taylor Lindquist scored to break the tie and put the Trojans on the board first, 2-0.  Alexis Aiken raced up the court for a lay-up and the game was quickly tied again at 2-2.  However, Aiken's bucket would be one of only three successful attempts from the field for the Tigers in the entire first half of play.  The Trojans didn't fair much better, shooting just 7 of 28 for a 20-19 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, things improved for the Lady Tigers as they raced out of the locker room on a 10-4 run to grab a 29-24 lead.  Aiken was a large part of the NA run, charging the lane hard for two lay-ups to start the second half.  Jamie Robatisin and Jackie Dallier did good work in the paint with a pair of buckets apiece to help the Tigers to a 32-28 advantage by the end of the third period.

McDowell quickly tied the score, 32-32, to start the fourth quarter on two successful shots by 6-1 senior Kaitlyn Fromknecht.  The tall center was a force defensively as well for the Trojans, blocking eight shots on the night.  Offensively, Fromknecht was one of three Trojans to reach double digits.  Fromknecht poured in 12 points while Hailey Wilwohl knotched 10 points and Taylor Lindwuist led McDowell with 15 points.  Leading all scorers on the night was NA's Alexis Aiken with 16 points.  The senior posted a double-doouble with 12 rebounds and dropped in four free-throws in the fourth quarter to keep the Tigers close in the final period.  For her efforts, Aiken was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.  It wasn't just Aiken who kept the Tigers battling in the fourth as Jessica Mancosh caught fire with eight points and two three-pointers.  Ultimately though, it wasn't enough as McDowell took a late 48-46 lead on a pair of Lindquist free-throws with five seconds remaining before Nellis' desperation lay-up missed the basket as time expired.

The loss drops North Allegheny's record to 0-1 on the season.  The Lady Tigers face Penn Hills in the NA Tip-Off Tournament consolation game.  McDowell improves to 1-0 and will face Villa Maria for the tournament championship.  The NA-Penn Hills match-up gets underway at 10:00 am and will be carried live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
