Tigers Earn Section Win with Shutout of Butler
By: Bob Orkwis
So far this season, the Golden Tornado has had some trouble finding the net, while North Allegheny has done an excellent job keeping the ball out of its own net. That was the story at Newman Stadium as the Tigers posted a 2-0 section win over visiting Butler.
The Golden Tornado had netted four goals through their first five games, while North Allegheny had allowed just four through their first seven matches.
The Tigers had some great first-half opportunities, including one from Josh Tufts in the game’s first minute. Connor Heliger and Kevin Chen added scoring chances later in the half, but the contest was scoreless at halftime.
North Allegheny broke the ice in the 49th minute when junior Harper Boles found on his foot eleven yards from goal. Boles notched his first goal of the campaign when he slid the ball inside the far post past Colton Crider for the 1-0 lead. Crider, a freshman, replaced fellow 9th grader Landon Bichler at halftime. Crider made his initial save a beauty when he made a kick save to deny Justin Statler in the 42nd minute.
The Tigers’ backline, midfield and senior keeper Xavier Zyskowski remained stout. Zyskowki’s best save came in the 37th minute when he made a diving stop to keep the Golden Tornado off the scoreboard.
North Allegheny added its second marker with literally no time left in the match. Junior Owen Lopresti, who earlier hit the far post in the 69th minute, came in on a breakaway in the final seconds, and rolled the ball across the line as the clock hit 0:00 for his second goal of the season to seal the victory.
With his first tally of 2025 and the game-winning goal, Boles was awarded the Wright Automotive Player of the Game Honors.
North Allegheny (5-1-2) (2-0-1) in 4A section 3, ran its unbeaten streak to (3-0-2). The clean sheet was the fourth of the season for the Tigers. North Allegheny is at Seneca Valley next Tuesday before returning home for matches against Fox Chapel on Thursday and a non-section tilt against Montour on Saturday. Those two home contests will be carried on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
