Lady Tigers explode in second quarter, defeat Pine-Richland, 61-36

North Allegheny used a 20-6 second quarter to jump out to a 23-point lead at halftime, and coasted to a 61-36 victory over Pine-Richland Thursday night at the North Allegheny Gymnasium in a Section 1-6A matchup.
North Allegheny jumped out of the gates strong scoring the first eight points of the game. Pine-Richland was able to respond with a run of their own cutting the Lady Tigers lead to 12-11 midway through the first quarter. After a North Allegheny turnover gave Pine-Richland a chance to get their first lead of the night, Lizzy Groetsch got a huge steal and got the ball up to Emma Fischer who laid it in. The Lady Tigers went on an 8-0 to finish the quarter and led 20-11.
In the second quarter North Allegheny’s defense began forcing turnovers and getting easy baskets in transition. The Lady Tigers would outscore Pine-Richland 20-6 in the quarter and lead 40-17 at the half. In the second half North Allegheny was able to stretch their lead at one point to 33 but ultimately won by 25 with a final of 61-36.
Groetsch was named Wright Automotive Player of the Game with 22 points. Groetsch followed Pine-Richland’s leading scorer Kaili Doctor all night. Doctor finished with 12 points but eight of them coming in the second half. Paige Morningstar added 16 points.
North Allegheny improves to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in Section 1-6A. Pine-Richland falls to 2-3 both overall and in the section. Up next for the Lady Tigers will be a trip to Penn-Trafford Monday night at 7:30 p.m. Penn-Trafford and North Allegheny are tied for first place with 5-0 section records.
