NA Drops Section Contest At Norwin
A longstanding and competitive rivalry existed between North Allegheny and Norwin long before the Knights joined the same section as the Tigers five years ago. Since the 2018-19 season, NA and Norwin have split the regular season series three times in the last four seasons. That trend continued on Tuesday night as North Allegheny lost at Norwin for the fourth time in the last five years, falling by a score of 53-32 in the Section 1-6A opener. Aside from the four losses at Norwin in that five-year span, North Allegheny is 53-0 in section play on any other court, home or away.
The Tigers got off to a strong start in the first quarter and led 13-10. Junior Caroline Henderson knocked down a 3-pointer and netted all five of her points in the opening stanza. Junior forward Lydia Betz added a two-point field goal, junior guard Kellie McConnell connected on a pair of free throws and senior Jasmine Timmerson contributed four points to the Tigers early lead.
However, Norwin rode the hot hand of Ava Kobus, who scored 11 of her 14 points in the second period alone. Kobus poured in three of her four 3-pointers in the second stanza as well, helping the Knights outscore the Tigers 20-6 in the second period.
Leading 30-19 coming out of the locker room at the half, Norwin maintained its advantage with a consistent effort from Kendall Berger and Lauren Polangio. Berger posted 14 points and Polangio added 11, helping the Knights fend off the Tigers in the second half for a 53-32 victory.
Timmerson, a University of Pittsburgh commit, did her best to keep North Allegheny afloat in the second half and scored a game-high 20 points on the evening.
North Allegheny slides to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in Section 1-6A, while Norwin improves to 9-1 overall and 1-0 in the section. The Tigers return to action on Friday night at 6:30 pm against the Pine-Richland Rams. The game will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
