In a battle between the top two-ranked teams in Class 6A, the No. 1-ranked North Allegheny girls’ basketball team dropped a 47-42 decision to No. 2 Norwin on Tuesday night at UPMC Court in the section opener.

The reigning WPIAL champions got off to a hot start on their home floor and jumped out to a 14-9 lead thanks in part to the hot hand of Caroline Henderson. The senior guard buried two 3-pointers in the opening stanza to turn a 7-5 deficit into a five-point lead by the end of the first quarter.

With North Allegheny leading 16-11 early in the second quarter, the game turned on a 14-0 run by Norwin that sparked a 28-18 advantage for the visiting Knights at the half. Junior Averi Brozeski netted a pair of 3-pointers off the bench and senior Ava Kobus tallied five of her team-high 15 points in the second period.

The defenses of both teams took command in a low-scoring third quarter that saw Norwin inch its lead out to 13 points, outscoring NA, 7-4, in the period.

The Knights led 35-22 to start the fourth quarter and staved off a late charge by the Tigers. Henderson connected on three more treys in the second half, while senior Kellie McConnell poured in eight of her 13 points over the final 16 minutes. Despite their best efforts, the Tigers couldn’t quite overcome the deficit and fell, 47-42.

With a team-high 17 points and five 3-pointers, Henderson was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

Along with Kobus’ big night, senior forward Lauren Polangio also touched double figures for Norwin with 13 points on the inside.

The loss was North Allegheny’s first of the year, dropping the Tigers to 6-1 overall and 0-1 in Section 1-6A. Norwin improves to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in section play. The Tigers look to bounce back on Thursday night with a visit to Pine-Richland to face the Rams.
