NA Hammers Hempfield On Senior Night, 70-31

The North Allegheny girls’ basketball rolled past the Hempfield Spartans in the Section 1-6A finale on Friday night, 70-31. It was Senior Night at UPMC Court and all five seniors played a role in the mercy-rule victory.

Seniors Kellie McConnell, Caroline Henderson, Emily Glass, Lydia Betz and Grace Heliger were all honored before the game. All five seniors started the game and all five touched the score sheet.

Hempfield had a brief moment of success in the early going and held a 6-5 lead before North Allegheny used a 15-0 run to take a 20-6 lead and command of the game. By the third quarter, the Tigers invoked the mercy rule with a 46-16 advantage.

Heliger powered the Tigers with a game-high 21 points to earn Wright Automotive Player of the Game honors. Betz also made significant contributions with 17 points and numerous rebounds. Henderson netted 13 points and poured in a trio of 3-pointers.

With the win, North Allegheny improves to 19-2 overall and finishes section play with an 8-2 mark. Hempfield falls to 8-13 overall and 1-9 in section play. The Tigers will host Woodland Hills on Monday at 4:30 p.m. for their final regular season game ahead of the WPIAL playoffs. The game will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
