Norwin Snaps NA’s 8-game Winning Streak

Posted on:

The North Allegheny girls’ basketball team lost for the first time in over month as section rival Norwin defeated the Tigers, 64-44, at The Castle in Westmoreland County. It was only the second loss all season for the Tigers with both coming at the hands of the Knights.

In a first half that featured several big runs, Norwin opened the game on a 10-0 run but North Allegheny answered back. A Cate Pingpank buzzer-beater to end the first quarter cut the deficit to 12-7 and spearheaded a 12-2 run that knotted the score at 12-12 by the early stages of the second period. However, the Knights jousted back with a 7-0 run and held a 30-22 lead at the half.

In the second half, Norwin led by as much as 14 points before NA started to once again chip away. Led by senior Caroline Henderson’s 17 points and three 3-pointers, the Tigers closed the gap to 41-35 in the final minute of the third period. Senior forward Lydia Betz also poured in several fadeaway jumpers for NA and totaled 10 points.

That was as close as NA would come, however, as Norwin used a 12-0 run to start the fourth quarter to finally put the Tigers away enroute to a 64-44 win. In a well-balanced effort by Norwin, Kendall Berger led the Knights with a game-high 21 points and Ava Christopher added 10 points.

Following the loss, North Allegheny slips to 14-2 overall and 4-2 in Section 1-6A. Norwin improves to 14-3 overall and 6-0 in the section. The Tigers look to bounce back with a tough non-section test on Saturday night against the Indiana Little Indians. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. at UPMC Court and will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
