Tigers Secure 11th Straight Section Title
The North Allegheny girls’ basketball team locked up a co-section championship on Thursday night with a 75-62 victory at Hempfeld. The Tigers split the Section 1-6A crown with the Norwin Knights, as each team finished the section slate with a 9-1 record. It’s the 11th consecutive season NA has earned at least a share of the section title.
With a section crown at stake, Tigers wasted little time and pounced on the host Spartans in the first quarter with a barrage of 3-pointers. Junior Caroline Henderson buried three shots from beyond the arc and senior Cam Phillips added two more treys in the first period to open up a 25-14 lead. The Tigers continued to pour it on from there and cruised to the victory.
Henderson continued her torrid perimeter shooting with five 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 21 points. Senior Jasmine Timmerson netted 15 points and Phillips made three treys and totaled 14 points. Junior Grace Heliger also joined in the 3-point parade with one second period triple.
For Hempfield, juniors Ashley Hosni and Sarah Podkul each scored a team-high 18 points. Podkul netted four 3-pointers, as did senior Brooke McCoy who finished with 14 points.
North Allegheny wraps up the section slate with a 9-1 record and sits at 16-4 overall. Hempfield will miss the postseason with a 3-7 section mark and is 9-12 overall. The Tigers will host South Fayette on Saturday for a tough non-section tune-up before the playoffs. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
