File Photo by Craig Bentzen * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS FINISH SIXTH IN STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS After losing a tough 5-3 decision to Governor Mifflin, the Tigers finished in 6th place in the State Championships at North Penn High School on Friday and Saturday. After dropping the opener to GM, the Tigers lost to eventual champion North Penn, 11-2. NA rebounded to beat McDowell, 8-4, but lost the finale to Cathedral Prep from Erie, 9-1. North Penn defeated West Lawn Wilson, 10-8, in the championship game. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS DOWN CATHEDRAL PREP, 9-5, TO WIN FIRST EVER WESTERN DIVISION TITLE Senior captain Conor Battle scored five goals to lead the Tigers to a 9-5 victory over Cathedral Prep on Monday night as the Tigers won their first ever Western Division title. Brendan Kirsch scored two goals with Joe Guenther and John Nolan adding a goal each as the Tigers secured a 3rd seed at the State Championships coming up in three weeks. NA also defeated McDowell, 11-6, to finish their dual game season with a record of 10-4, the best in school history. The Lady Tigers dropped a 16-8 contest to McDowell. Junior hole set Ginny Thistle scored four goals and Vanessa Carik added three more to pace NA. The girls' teamwill travel to Cumberland valley this weekend for an opportunity to qualify of the state finals. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER BOYS QUALIFY FOR STATE TOURNAMENT The boys' water polo team defeated perennial power McDowell, 12-8, in Erie on Saturday night to qualify for the State Championships. On Friday night, NA lost to Cathedral Prep, 13-8, to even their series at 1-1. The boys' JV team defeated both McDowell and Cathedral Prep. The girls' team improved their play from last weekend but still fell short in their bid to qualify for states. NA lost a close match to Villa Maria, 8-7, on Friday night. The next night, the Lady Tigers played McDowell tough until the closing minutes, losing a 15-8 decision. The girls' JV squad won both their games against Fairview HS and McDowell. This weekend, the JV teams will compete in the Beast of the East Tournament in the Reading area. * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER BOYS WIN THREE OF FOUR IN WESTERN TIGER CLASSIC Brendan Kirsch scored 14 goals to lead the Tigers to three wins in four games at the Western Tiger Classic at the Senior High pool last weekend. Joe Guenther had 8 and Conor Battle seven as NA played some of the top teams in the state. In the first game, the Tigers downed McDowell from Erie, 13-6. Governor Mifflin handed NA their only loss, a tough 7-6 decision in game two. On Saturday, the Tigers finished off Cumberland Valley, 11-8, before downing Cathedral Prep from Erie, 14-7. According to Coach Corky Semler, "John Nolan played some terrific defense along with Jose Rodriguez and Kyle Bradshaw". Credit Max Rzodkiewicz and Luis Rodriguez with playing instrumental roles in the victories. Coach Semler added, "Cameron Illes demonstrated why he is one of the top goalies in the state with many spectacular saves." It was an impressive performance by the Tigers. The Lady Tigers did not fare as well on the scoreboard, dropping all four games. It is a work in progress this year for the young NA team that is gaining experience against top-flight competition. The Tiger teams will travel to Erie this weekend with games on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the boys' will face Cathedral Prep with the girls' taking on Villa Maria. On Saturday, both teams will play against the McDowell Trojans. WESTERN TIGER CLASSIC GAME RESULTS - NA only
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS PARTICIPATE IN SCREAMING EAGLES TOURNAMENT LAST WEEKEND Both the boys' and girls' teams competed in the Screaming Eagles Tournament at Cumberland Valley High School this past weekend. The young Lady Tigers were 0-4 but gained valuable experience against some of the top teams in eastern Pennsylvania. The boys' team won two and lost three tough games. NA downed host Cumberland Valley, 14-7, and Malvern by the same 14-7 score. The Tigers lost three games by one goal each. North Penn edged the Tigers, 7-6, while Wissahickon and Haverford both posted 10-9 wins. This weekend, NA will host the Western Tiger Classic at the Senior High pool. 2006 CUMBERLAND VALLEY
