BAXENDELL'S GOAL BEATS NORWIN, 1-0, AS LADY TIGERS TAKE WPIAL TITLE

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

A goal by junior Brooke Baxendell was all the Lady Tigers needed to defeat Norwin, 1-0, in the WPIAL Class AAA championship game at Fox Chapel on Monday night.  The NA defense held off the Lady Knights for the remainder of the game to give the Lady Tigers their fourth title in the last five years.  Junior Natalie Martin earned the shutout with the help of a strong  NA defensive effort.

The Lady Tigers started applying pressure early with junior Shannon Sullivan getting a chance just thirty seconds into the contest.  Senior Strealy Clark followed with another opportunity seconds later, but Norwin goalie Jacki Gigliotti made both saves.  NA forced a penalty corner a minute later, but Gigliotti stopped Steph Ertzberger's hard shot.  The Lady Tigers continued to pressure the Norwin goal with another shot going wide at the 2:26 mark.  The Lady Knights played better defense over the next several minutes but could not move the ball out of their own territory.  With 20:14 left in the half, Antimarino sent a pass through to Sullivan but the Norwin defense blocked the shot attempt.  Four minutes later, the Lady Tigers sent two long passes through the circle but could not convert.  At the 13:37 mark, Ertzberger's shot attempt was blocked.  With 7:10 on the first half clock, junior Alex Schenk made a good move down the left side and set up Baxendell, but her attempt missed to the left of the goal.  The Lady Tigers finally broke through with 6:42 remaining off a corner when Baxendell tipped in a ball sent in by senior Amy Antimarino to give NA a 1-0 advantage.  Norwin came alive after the goal in an attempt to equalize.  The Lady Knights forced two consecutive corners.  Kim Marcius was stopped by Turner at the 3:48 mark, and an attempt by Kaleigh Ruffner went wide with 2:56 remaining.  The Lady Tiger defense then regrouped and kept Norwin from any additional first half opportunities.  The Lady Tigers took the one goal lead to the intermission.

In the second half, Norwin had an early chance when freshman Evie Romeo made a long run down the left side but her shot went wide left.  The Lady Tigers then kept the ball in Norwin territory over the next ten minutes, but could not get any good scoring opportunities despite forcing two corners.  The Lady Knights changed strategy in the second half, relying on long hits to try to gain a territorial advantage.  Senior Gina Filiano sent a number of long hits deep into the NA end.  It paid off midway through the half when the Lady Knights earned three consecutive corners.  The NA defense, led by senior Erin McGee was equal to the occasion allowing no real scoring chances.  The Lady Tigers countered the Norwin strategy by sending both Ertzberger and Baxendell out quickly.  Ertzberger had two chances at the 13:20 and 12:48 marks but could not beat Gigliotti.  NA kept up the offensive pressure over the next several minutes but again could not score.  The Lady Knights had one last opportunity to score between the 24 and 25 minute marks.  The Lady Knights applied pressure, and Filiano had a good chance from just inside the circle with 5:24 remaining, but Martin made a good kick save to keep NA on top.  For the remainder of the game, the Lady Tigers dominated play, keeping the ball in the Norwin zone.  NA forced a pair of corners but the Norwin defense, led by Kara Bocan, was able to block any scoring attempts.  After a final NA time out with 3:05 remaining, the Lady Tigers turned up the defensive pressure and were able to run out the remaining time.  As time ran out, NA had defeated Norwin, 1-0, to win the WPIAL Championship.

It was a good defensive effort by the Lady Tigers against a very disciplined Norwin team.  NA owned a territorial advantage for most of the contest and were able to score the goal they needed to gain the victory.  The Lady Tigers recorded seven corners to five for Norwin.   For efforts on the offensive end, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Brooke Baxendell as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Lady Tigers finished with a 13-0 record against WPIAL teams with the overall mark improving to 16-3-1.  NA will travel to State College tomorrow afternoon for a PIAA Preliminary Round contest.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.

MT. LEBANON FALLS TO LADY TIGERS, 6-0,
IN WPIAL SEMIFINALS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior Steph Ertzberger and junior Alex Schenk each scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Lady Tigers to a 6-0 victory over Mt. Lebanon in the WPIAL Class AAA semifinals at Newman Stadium on Wednesday night.  Juniors Shannon Sullivan and Brooke Baxendell also scored for NA.  With the win, the Lady Tigers advance to the WPIAL championship game against Norwin at Fox Chapel on Monday night.

The Lady Tigers dominated the contest from the outset but could not score early.  Just four minutes into the game, junior Meghan Hoot had a good chance but her shot was stopped by Lebo goalie. Kaska Komosinski.  A rebound attempt was sent just wide to the right of the goal.  After an early Mt. Lebanon time out at the 5:53 mark, Ertzberger raced through the Lebo defense on a run of over 50 yards.  Her shot looked to go in the goal but play continued.    After another apparent NA goal was disallowed on a penalty corner, Ertzberger finally put NA on top at the 19:43 mark on a successful corner.  Junior Kelly Carioto sent the ball to senior Amy Antimarino who set up a good stick stop and Ertzberger blasted the ball into the goal.  Twenty-five seconds later,  Sullivan's shot went wide after a scramble in front of the goal.  The Lady Tigers continued to pressure the Lebo goal, and it paid off when Schenk converted a pass from Ertzberger to make it 2-0 with 11:05 remaining in the half.  NA got two more chances again with the ball in the circle, but shots by Sullivan and Ertzberger were blocked by the Mt. Lebanon defense.  Schenk then stole a clearing pass and score to extend the lead to 3-0 with 8:36 remaining forcing another Lebo time out.  With three minutes left, the Blue Devils made one of their infrequent incursions into NA territory and had two chances to score.  The Lady Tiger defense, led by senior Erin McGee blocked and cleared both attempts.  In the last minute of play, Baxendell set up Sullivan for the fourth NA tally.  The Lady Tigers took a commanding 4-0 advantage to the intermission.

The Lady Tigers kept up the pressure in the second half creating a number of scoring chances.  Hoot deflected an Ertzberger pass wide early in the half at the 2:37 mark.  NA kept control of the ball in the Lebo end, and had two additional scoring opportunities a little over ten minutes into the half.  After an NA time out, Ertzberger scored her second goal off a pass from Antimarino as the lead went to 5-0 at the 11:02 mark.  Shots by Sullivan and senior Strealy Clark were stopped by the Lebo defense in the next couple of minutes.  Baxendell came close with 15:53 left but her shot went wide.  It was Baxendell again after a long run but she missed wide right again.  Baxendell finally scored with 2:40 left with Schenk picking up the assist.   The NA defense held off Lebo for the remaining minutes as the Lady Tigers took a convincing 6-0 victory.

It was a good win for the Lady Tigers as they controlled play throughout the contest.  Junior goalie Natalie Martin saw little in the way of shots by Mt. Lebanon in picking up the shutout.  It was a good team effort, but the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Alex Schenk as the Player of the Game.  Statistically, NA had six penalty corners while Lebo had none.

It was sweet revenge for the Lady Tigers who lost a 1-0 overtime game to Lebo in last year's championship.

RAIN HALTS NA-FOX CHAPEL GAME WITH LADY TIGERS ON TOP, 1-0

Only the rain can stop the Lady Tigers, and it did on Thursday afternoon at Fox Chapel.  After Steph Ertzberger scored to give NA a 1-0 lead, the rains came and play was halted after a little over thirteen minutes.  The game will not be completed as it has no bearing on the WPIAL standings.

The Lady Tigers completed the regular season with a record of 11-0 as they won the Section 1 title.  The Lady Tigers will play Mt. Lebanon in the semifinals of the WPIAL Class AAA tournament.  Game time is set for 7:00 pm on Wednesday.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 pm.  The winner will advance to the championship game to be held on Monday, October 30.

LADY TIGERS CLINCH SECTION TITLE WITH 9-1 VICTORY OVER HEMPFIELD

Senior Steph Ertzberger scored four goals and added two assists as the Lady Tigers crushed Hempfield, 9-1, on Senior Night on Tuesday evening at Newman Stadium.  Juniors Alex Schenk, Meghan Hoot, Meredith Feingold, Shannon Sullivan and Brooke Baxendell all had goals in the NA victory.  With the win, the Lady Tigers wrapped the section championship.

The Lady Tigers scored early when Ertzberger got her first of the game just 4:36 into the contest on an assist from Schenk.  Five minutes later, Schenk scored on an assist from senior Cat Pylant to make it 2-0.  Ertzberger added two more goals before halftime to extend the margin to 4-0.  Senior Amy Antimarino assisted on Ertzberger's third goal of the game with 10:35 remaining in the half.  Neither team scored in the remaining time as NA took a commanding 4-0 lead to the intermission.

The second half was more of the same as the Lady Tigers continued to dominate.  Hoot scored just 50 seconds into the second stanza to increase the margin to 5-0.  Feingold made it 6-0 on an assist from Baxendell at the 19:58 mark.  Hempfield got on the board with 17:47 remaining when Tara Zollinger tallied off a penalty corner.  Sullivan answered at the 11:56 mark to increase the lead to 7-1.  Ertzberger earned her second assist on a goal by Baxendell with 9:04 remaining as the score ballooned to 8-1.  Ertzberger put the finishing touch on a big Senior Night victory as she scored her fourth goal with 7:26 remaining.  The Lady Tigers took home a 9-1 victory.

It was a dominating performance in every aspect.  NA outshot Hempfield, 22-4, while being awarded four penalty corners.  Hempfield also had four corners.

With the win, the Lady Tigers improved their section record to 11-0 with just one section contest remaining.  NA will travel to Fox Chapel tomorrow afternoon to meet the Foxes in the final section game.  The starting time is scheduled for 5:00 pm.

In the first half, Carioto scored off a penalty corner to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead at the intermission.  Sullivan scored in the second half at the 21:56 mark, but Norwin came back to tie the game at 2-2 at the end of regulation.  Just one minute into the overtime period, Baxendell got the game winner.  Norwin outshot NA, 25-13.

GREENSBURG SALEM NO MATCH FOR LADY TIGERS IN 10-0 ROUT

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers repeated their earlier 10-0 blanking of Greensburg Salem at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Senior Steph Ertzberger led the way with a hat trick with juniors Alex Schenk and Meghan Hoot contributing a pair of goals each.  Senior Strealy Clark and juniors Meredith Feingold and Brooke Baxendell scored the other NA goals.

The Lady Tigers took control from the outset.  Senior Amy Antimarino had a good chance just one minute into the contest but her shot was stopped by the GS goalie.  Just a little under a minute later, Baxendell poked in a rebound to give NA a 1-0 lead.  Feingold made it 2-0 at the 24:25 mark.  Less than two minutes later, Ertzberger blasted in a shot from the right side just inside the circle to increase the margin to 3-0.  After Ertzberger missed just wide left ten minutes into the game, Strealy Clark scored from right in front of the GS net to make it a 4-0 game and the rout was on.  After a Lion time out, Ertzberger scored her second goal, again on a hard shot from the right side, to increase the lead to 5-0.  With 6:58 left, Schenk made a good run down the left side and slammed her own rebound into the goal as the score went to 6-0.  Antimarino set up Hoot with 4:30 left on the first half clock for NA's final goal of the period as the Lady Tigers took a commanding 7-0 advantage to the intermission.  Greensburg Salem did not get off a shot in the half.

The second half was more of the same as the Lady Tigers threatened early in the period.   Hoot's shot was stopped just a minute into the half while Ertzberger had another opportunity but could not convert at the 23:02 mark.  Schenk scored  her second goal of the game on an assist from Antimarino with 21:52 remaining to push the lead to 8-0.  NA continued to get scoring chances and Hoot was able to net her second goal with Schenk picking up the assist with 14:18 remaining.  Antimarino's scoring attempt went wide less than a minute later.  Ertzberger scored her third goal of the game on a penalty corner with 13:14 remaining as the Lady Tigers went on to the easy 10-0 victory.  Led by senior co-captain Kim Ryan, Greensburg Salem did get three shots at the NA goal in the second half but junior goalie Natalie Martin made the saves.

The win kept NA undefeated in section play with a 7-0 mark while their overall record improved to 9-3-1.  The "Chicks with Sticks" will travel to Penn-Trafford tomorrow for a 5:00 pm section contest against the Warriors.

WPIAL FIELD HOCKEY 2006

The Lady Tigers will compete again in Class AAA along with twelve other teams.  Section plaques will be awarded to each section winner.  Ties in section record for first place will not be broken and tied teams will each receive a plaque.  To determine entry into the PIAA Championship, the two Class AAA section champions will have a playoff game.

Ties for first place in section record will be broken by head-to-head competition.  If the tie is not broken in head-to-head, the following point system will be applied to all section games.

1.  All victories will earn two points
2.  All ties will earn one point.
3.  The team with the greatest number of points will be the champion.

Failure to break the tie by applying the point system will result in applying a point differential system to a plus or minus five to all section games played.

Duration of games shall be a maximum of sixty minutes played in two equal halves.  All regular season games that end in a tie will enter a sudden victory - reduced player - tie-breaking procedure not to exceed fifteen minutes with the teams not changing goals to begin the period.  A coin toss will determine which team will take possession of the ball.  If the score remains tied at the completion of the overtime period, the game will be recorded as a tie.
