TIGERS BLAST SHALER, 7-2, FOR THIRD STRAIGHT PIHL WIN

Led by senior captain Danny Gaertner's two goals, the Tiger defeated Shaler, 7-2, at Bladerunners in Harmarville on Monday night.  NA built a 6-0 lead in the second period before Shaler could get on the board.  Senior Wes Waldschmidt and sophomore Dylan Rohar both added a goal and three assists as the Tigers beat the Titans for the second straight time in the back to back series.

After neither team could score in the early going in the first period, junior defenseman Jake Williams gave NA a 1-0 lead when he banged one off the post and goalie and into the net at the 6:31 mark.  The Tigers added two goals in the last minute to take a three-goal lead.  Rohar scored a power play goal with just 52 seconds remaining and Gaertner made it 3-0 on an assist from junior forward Josh Herbert with just three ticks left on the first period clock.  The Tigers took a 3-0 advantage into the first intermission.

The Tigers wasted no time in turning the game into a rout with three goals in the first 4:44 of the second period.  Senior Matt Lancaster scored just 2:50 into the stanza on an assist from Wes Waldschmidt to push the margin to 4-0.  Twenty seconds later, Rohar found Herbert open in front of the net to extend the lead to 5-0.  Gaertner was able to tally a shorthanded goal at the 10:16 mark as the Tigers made it 6-0.  Shaler finally was able to score when Patrick Schaffer drove home a power play goal with 7:45 remaining in the period.  Wes Waldschmidt answered just 38 seconds later with Rohar assisting on a delayed penalty.  The Tigers took a commanding 7-1 lead into the final period.

The Tigers outshot Shaler, 15-4, in the final period but could not score.  The Titans scored the only goal of the period when Drew Martz was given a disputed tally with only two seconds left.  NA outshot the Titans, 38-23, on the game with senior goalie Adam Lutty earning the victory stopping 21 Shaler shots.

With the win, the Tigers improved their section record to 4-1 and moved into a first place tie with Fox Chapel in the North Division.  NA will host Penn-Trafford next Tuesday at Bladerunners in Warrendale.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 8:20 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 8:30 pm.

CENTRAL CATHOLIC TOURNAMENT
BETHEL PARK BEATS TIGERS, 6-3, IN SEMIFINALS

The Tigers dropped a 6-3 decision to Bethel Park at Bladerunners in Harmarville on Saturday night in the semifinals of the Central Catholic Tournament.  Junior Josh Herbert, senior Dan Gaertner, and senior Wes Waldschmidt scored the NA goals.  The Tigers came within one in the second and third periods, but the Blackhawks were able to pull away for the victory.

Early in the first period, the NA defense led by senior Brad Schwartzmier and junior Jake Williams held off the BP attack.  The Blackhawks broke through, however, when Tyler Trocano scored at the 8:47 mark.  A little over a minute later, Herbert broke through the BP defense to tie the game on a good individual effort.  Later in the period, Tom Whetsel and Logan Bannon scored to give the Blackhawks a 3-1 advantage after one period.

In the second period, senior Adam Lutty replaced junior Max Richards in goal for NA.  Just 1:39 into the period, Gaertner scored an unassisted goal to cut the margin to 3-2.  The Tigers held off Bethel for most of the period, but Tim Davin scored with 1:29 remaining to restored the two-goal lead after two periods.

In the third period, senior Wes Waldschmidt scored on a long blast from the blue line that deflected in off the goalie's stick to cut the lead to one again at 4-3.  Three penalties by NA gave Bethel Park the opening they needed as Whetsel and Machi scored power play goals to send the Blackhawks on their way to the final with the 6-3 victory.

WES WALDSCHMIDT LEADS TIGERS
OVER SHALER, 4-2

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior forward Wes Waldschmidt scored two goals and added two assists to lead the Tigers to a 4-2 victory over Shaler at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night.  Senior Matt Lancaster and sophomore Brady Waldschmidt also scored for the winning Tigers with junior defenseman Tyson Stupy recording two assists.  NA scored all four goals on power plays in a penalty filled contest.

The Tigers dominated the first period but came away with just one goal.  Wes Waldschmidt had a good chance at the 3:03 mark, but Shaler goalie Brent Babarich made a good save.  Just 26 seconds later, Lancaster hit the post and junior forward Josh Herbert shot just wide as NA continued to pressure the Shaler goal.  On two consecutive power plays, the Tigers came close but Babarich was there to make the saves.  The best chances came from Wes Waldschmidt and sophomore forward Dylan Rohar, but the game remained scoreless.  Wes Waldschmidt finally made the Titans pay when he skated in from the blue line and cleanly beat Babarich on yet another power play to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead with 5:21 remaining in the period.  Neither team scored in the remaining time as NA took a 1-0 lead to the first intermission.

In the second period, Shaler continued to spend time in the penalty box with early penalties.  The Tigers almost scored early in the period, but Shaler's Justin Cavlovich cleared the puck just before it slid into the net.  Brady Waldschmidt was able to get a stick on the puck in a scramble in front on the net to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead on a power play goal with 10:05 left in the period.  After Herbert was stopped on a breakaway attempt by Babarich, Shaler rallied to tie the game, however, with a pair of goals in a span of 46 seconds.  Junior goalie Max Richards made several good saves as the Titans went on a power play, but Grant Duss was able to score from in front of the goal at the 8:45 mark.  Seconds later, Drew Martz came out from behind the NA goal to tuck in the tying goal with 7:59 left in the period.  The Tigers answered to retake the lead on another power play.  Lancaster was able to get a stick on Wes Waldschmidt's shot from the left circle to give NA a 3-2 lead with 6:16 remaining.   Lancaster had another good chance at the 3:40 mark, but could not score.  Richards kept the Tigers on top with a big save on Brian Ulanowicz with just 1:02 remaining in the stanza.  The period ended without further scoring as the Tigers lead, 3-2, going into the final period.

The teams exchanged penalties throughout the first half of the period.  The Tigers had two good chances as Babarich stopped Herbert at the 10:02 mark, and Duss came back to deny Lancaster on another breakaway attempt.  NA continued to hold the one-goal lead until Duss was sent off for tripping with 4:29 remaining.  Wes Waldschmidt scored the insurance goal from the left wing circle to give the Tigers a 4-2 advantage with 3:55 left in the game.  A skirmish broke out with just 48 seconds left.  A number of penalties and one ejection marred the end of the contest.  The Tigers were able to keep the puck in the Shaler end for the remaining time and came away with a 4-2 victory.

It was a hard fought win for the Tigers against a neighborhood rival.  Richards was tough in the net when he had to be particularly with NA a man short.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Wes Waldschmidt as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers improved their PIHL record to 3-1 and moved into a first place tie with Fox Chapel in the North Division.  The Tigers and Shaler will meet again on Monday night at Bladerunners in Harmarville with game time scheduled for 7:30 pm.

The Tigers were on the road Friday night and came away with an 8-2 victory over Canon-McMillan at the Ice-o-Plex at SouthPointe.  NA scored six times in the third period to break open a 2-0 game.  Seniors Wes Waldschmidt and Matt Lancaster scored two goals each to lead the Tigers.

Neither team scored in the second period.  The Tigers had chances during the first two periods but converted on only one of nine power plays.  Senior goalie Adam Lutty was strong in the net during stopping eighteen shots over the first two stanzas as the Tigers continued to lead, 2-0, going into the third period.

Early in the third period, Nate Bohn scored a power play goal for the Big Macs to cut the margin to 2-1 just 1:37 into the period.  The Tigers then exploded for six straight goals to put the game away.  Lancaster scored an unassisted power play goal two minutes later to make it 3-1.  Eighteen seconds later, Herbert extended the lead to 4-1 with Rohar picking up the assist.  The Tigers continued to attack the Big Mac goal with Rohar scoring with 8:30 remaining to make it a 5-1 NA lead.  Sophomore forward Brady Waldschmidt tallied an unassisted goal less than a minute later as the lead went to 6-1.  Wes Waldschmidt scored a power play goal at the 5:46 mark on an assist from Stupy to increase the lead to 7-1.  Lancaster got his second of the game with 3:09 remaining to close out the Tiger scoring and give NA an 8-1 lead.  Corey Griffith scored a consolation goal for Canon-McMillan with just three seconds on the clock, but the Tigers came away with an 8-2 victory.  NA outshot the Big Macs, 19-7, in the period and 37-26 for the game.

With the win, NA improved their PIHL record to 2-1.  The Tigers will host Shaler on Tuesday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 8:20 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 8:30 pm.

WALDSCHMIDT'S FIVE GOALS LEAD TIGERS TO 10-0 ROUT OF GATEWAY IN PIHL OPENER

Senior Wes Waldschmidt showed why he is one of the top players in the PIHL as he scored five goals to lead the Tigers to an easy 10-0 victory over Gateway in the PIHL opener at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night.  Sophomore Brett Schindler added a pair of goals for the winning Tigers with seniors Matt Lancaster, Nick Vaglia and Mike Peterson also scoring for NA.  Sophomore Dylan Rohar recorded four assists on the evening.

In the first period, Waldschmidt got the Tigers off to a good start with a breakaway goal just 3:45 into the contest.  Neither team could score in the remainder of the period as NA took a 1-0 lead to the first intermission.  The Tigers broke the game open with six goals in the second period.  NA scored three goals in the first 5:08 of the period to open a 4-0 advantage.  Schindler scored his first varsity goal on assists from Rohar and junior defenseman Jake Williams to make it 2-0 at the 2:46 mark.  Lancaster increased the margin to 3-0 when he sent a puck into an open net on assists from Peterson and Waldschmidt at the 4:17 mark.  Less than a minute later, Rohar was able to set up Vaglia from behind the Gateway net for the fourth NA goal.  Later in the period, Rohar continued to set up Tigers as he assisted on Schindler's second goal of the game with 5:41 remaining in the period as the lead went to 5-0.  Waldschmidt scored his second goal, on assists from Lancaster and junior Josh Herbert, to make it a 6-0 game.  The final goal of the period was scored by Peterson on Rohar's fourth assist with 2:27 left in the period as the Tigers increased the lead to 7-0.  NA took a commanding seven-goal lead into the final period.  The Tigers outshot Gateway, 18-5, in the period.

The third period belonged to Waldschmidt as he scored three goals, two of them shorthanded.  Just 1:09 into the period, Waldschmidt made it 8-0 on an assist from Lancaster.  With NA down two men, Waldschmidt did it again with junior defenseman Tyson Stupy picking up the helper.  Finally, Waldschmidt put a final exclamation point on the victory with his fifth goal of the game, unassisted, with 36 seconds remaining.

The Tigers had to play good defense throughout the contest as they were called for nine penalties, including one stretch of two minutes where they were two men short.  Senior goalie Adam Lutty stopped all 19 Gateway shots, including some tough saves during the Gator power plays, to register the shutout.  NA outshot Gateway, 31-19, for the contest.

With the win, the Tigers open with a 1-0 mark in the North Division of the PIHL.  NA will travel to Bethel Park tomorrow night to meet the Blackhawks in an 8:20 pm contest at Bladerunners in Bethel Park.

TIGERS FALL TO BETHEL PARK, 5-4, IN FINALS OF BETHEL PARK TOURNAMENT

After a thrilling come back victory against Mars in the semifinals, the Tigers dropped a tough 5-4 decision to Bethel Park in the finals of the St. Margaret's Fall Face-Off Tournament at Bladerunners in Harmarville on Thursday night.  NA could not come all the way back from a 5-1 deficit after one period.  Senior captain Danny Gaertner and sophomore forward Dylan Rohar scored two goals each as the Tigers came up just a goal short.

Bethel Park opened a 1-0 lead early when Graham Cohen slammed home a loose park just 4:53 into the contest.  Gaertner came back to tie the game at 1-1 on a power play goal with senior Matt Lancaster picking up the assist.  The rest of the period belonged to the Blackhawks.  Bethel scored four goals in the remaining 5:07 of the period.  Cohen scored his second goal and Kenny Lehmann put home a rebound to give BP a 3-1 lead with 3:08 remaining.  Matt Seifert and Logan Bannon added goals to make it a 5-1 Bethel Park advantage after one period.  Bethel outshot NA, 14-4, in the opening stanza.

The Tigers came back in the second period to make it a game, thanks to some power plays created by BP penalties.  Lancaster set up Gaertner for his second goal at the 5:10 mark to make it a 5-2 game.  Rohar was able to find a loose park and drive it into the net less than a minute later to cut the margin to 5-3.  Rohar scored again with 4:31 remaining to reduce the lead to 5-4.  All three NA goals were on the power play.  Neither team could score in the remaining time and the Blackhawks took a 5-4 lead into the final period.  Thanks to good defensive work by senior Brad Schwartzmier and sophomore Bo Schwab, NA held Bethel to just five shots in the second period.

The third period featured hard skating and close checking.  Hard work by junior defenseman Tyson Stupy, who blocked several BP shots, kept the Blackhawks off the board.  With just 1:34 remaining, the Tigers were called for a penalty.  NA Head Coach Jim Black pulled his goalie to even things on the ice.  With 48 seconds left, senior Wes Waldschmidt was open in front of the BP goal but was pulled down by the Blackhawk defender.  With sophomore goalie Max Richards still sitting on the NA bench, the Tigers had a man advantage.  The Blackhawks were able to hold on, however, and took home a 5-4 victory and the first-place trophy.

Even with the loss, it was an impressive start for the Tigers who came home with the silver medal.  NA will begin PIHL league play on Tuesday, October 31, against Gateway at Bladerunners in Warrendale.

TIGERS TOP THOMAS JEFFERSON, 7-2, TO ADVANCE TO TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS

Senior forward Wes Waldschmidt scored three goals to lead the Tigers to a 7-2 victory over Thomas Jefferson at Bladerunners in Harmarville on Wednesday evening.  The win advanced NA to the semifinals of the St. Margaret's Fall Face-Off Tournament for the 8th time in the last 9 years.

The Tigers were  playing with a purpose last night as they dedicated the game to their classmate and friend, Eric Pelly, as they wore his number 88 on their helmets.  There was a moment of silence to honor him before the puck was dropped to start the game.

In the first period, the Tigers scored five times as they controlled play from the outset.  Sophomore Donny Lewis started things with a deflection of a shot by junior Josh Herbert to give NA a 1-0 lead.  Herbert made it 2-0 on assists from Lewis and senior captain Danny Gaertner.  Waldschmidt took a pass from sophomore Tyler Wright and broke in a scored to increase the margin to 3-0.  Minutes later, senior Mike Peterson tipped in a rebound in a scramble in front of the goal to give NA a 4-0 advantage.  The Tigers were not finished as they added a fifth goal when sophomore Brady Waldschmidt scored on a pass from sophomore Dylan Rohar from behind the TJ goal.  The Tigers took a commanding 5-0 lead into the second period.

Early in the period, senior goalie Adam Lutty made several key stops to stymie a 5-on-3 Jaguar power play.  Sophomore Bo Schwab helped with an excellent play to clear the puck out of the NA end.  Later in the period, Wes Waldschmidt tallied his second goal of the game on an assist from Stupy as NA took a 6-0 lead into the final period.

In the final period, Thomas Jefferson picked up twelve penalty minutes.  On an NA 5-on-3, Wes Waldschmidt finished his hat trick with assists going to Brady Waldschmidt and junior Jake Williams.  TJ managed a pair of consolation goals but the Tigers took home a 7-2 victory.

The Tigers will face Mars in the semifinals this afternoon with game time set for 3:00 pm at Bladerunners in Harmarville.  The winner will play the winner of the Bethel Park-Seneca Valley game at 8:30 pm tonight.

FOUR GOAL THIRD PERIOD LEADS TIGERS OVER MONTOUR, 5-1

The Tigers exploded for four goals in the third period to break open a 1-1 tie as NA defeated Montour, 5-1, at the St. Margaret's Fall Face-Off Tournament at Bladerunners in Harmarville on Tuesday night.  Seniors Mike Peterson, Wes Waldschmidt, and Matt Lancaster recorded a goal and two assists each to pace NA to their second win of the season.

Early in the first period, the Tigers attacked the Montour goal with a number of shots but could not score.  The best chance came on Waldschmidt's slap shot that bounced off the Montour goalie high into the net.  Neither team could score as the teams went to the intermission with a scoreless tie.  The Tigers took a 1-0 lead on a power play goal by sophomore forward Donny Lewis who tipped in a shot by junior defenseman Corey Sheran.  Later in the period, Montour tied the game with another power play goal sending the teams to the final period tied at 1-1.

Early in the third period, Peterson made a great play to put in a rebound of a shot by Lancaster.  Lancaster made it 3-1 on assists from Waldschmidt and Peterson.  Junior goalie Max Richards kept the Spartans from getting closer with a big save midway through the period.  A nice passing play set up the fourth NA goal.  Lancaster brought the puck into the Montour zone, passed to Petterson who set up Waldschmidt for the score.  In the waning minutes, Montour had a two-man advantage and pulled their goalie.  The NA defense, led by senior Brad Schwartzmier and junior Tyson Stupy, held off the Spartans with Richards making key saves.  Herbert got loose for an open net goal with time running out as the Tigers captured a 5-1 victory.

The win gave NA a 2-0 mark in preliminary pool play.  The Tigers will meet Thomas Jefferson today as they try to move on to the semifinals.  Game time is set for 5:00 pm.

TIGERS OPEN SEASON WITH 7-0 SHUTOUT OVER PLUM

Senior Wes Waldschmidt scored a pair of goals and junior forward Josh Herbert added four assists to lead the Tigers to a 7-0 victory over Plum in the opening game of the St. Margaret's Fall Face-off Tournament at Bladerunners in Harmarville on Monday afternoon.  Senior captain Danny Gaertner added a pair of goals as did senior forward Matt Lancaster.  Senior forward Nick Vaglia scored the other NA goal

In the first period, the Tigers got off to a tough start as they had to kill off back to back penalties for almost a full two minutes.  Good defense by senior Brad Schwartzmier, junior Tyson Stupy and senior goalie Adam Lutty kept the Mustangs off the board.  The Tigers then received a power play and made it pay off.  Herbert set up Waldschmidt for the first goal of the game at the 5:55 mark as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead after one period.

In the second period, NA scored four unanswered goals.  Lancaster made it 2-0 when he put in a rebound of a Waldschmidt shot just 33 seconds into the period.  Gaertner increased the lead to 3-0 on assists from senior Mike Peterson and Herbert midway through the period.  With 5:49 remaining, Lancaster found Waldschmidt open in front of the net for his second goal as the Tigers made it a 4-0 game.  With 2:20 left in the period, Gaertner recorded his second goal of the game with Herbert picking up his third assist.  The Tigers took a commanding 5-0 lead into the final period.

The third period turned ugly when the Mustangs took some bad penalties.  There were fourteen minutes of penalties in the final period as the Tigers added two more goals.  Senior Nick Vaglia put a wrister into the net just 1:12 into the stanza with Gaertner and Herbert assisting to make it 6-0.  Lancaster put the finishing touches on the 7-0 victory with his second goal on a nice move in front of the net.  Lutty stopped 19 shots in earning the shut out.

Game time this afternoon is scheduled for 3:00 pm.  The Tigers will meet Montour tonight at 7:00 pm and Thomas Jefferson on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.  Bracket winners will play in the semifinals and final on Thursday.
