LADY TIGERS HOLD OFF NORWIN, 4-1

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Three goals in the second half led the Lady Tigers to a 4-1 victory over Norwin at Newman Stadium on Monday night.  After senior Steph Erzberger gave NA a 1-0 lead just 1:50 into the game, neither team could score again in the first half.  In the second half, goals by senior Amy Antimarino, junior Alex Schenk, and junior Meghan Hoot opened a 4-0 lead before Norwin scored a later goal.

The Lady Tigers got off to a quick start in the first half with junior Kelly Carioto getting off a good shot from the left side thirty seconds into the contest that was stopped by Norwin sophomore goalie Jackie Gigliotti.  A little over a minute later, Ertzberger broke down the right side and beat Gigliotti to give NA a 1-0 lead.  NA kept the pressure on throughout much of the first half.  Schenk had a chance at the 25:13 mark but shot wide.  Two minutes later, junior forward Shannon Sullivan again missed wide.  Norwin came back midway through the half and came close to tying the game.  NA junior goalie Natalie Martin made three consecutive saves on shots by Kim Marcius and Victoria Holden to keep the Lady Tigers on top.  After a time out called by NA Head Coach Sue Phillips, the Lady Tigers regrouped and regained the territorial edge.  With just over three minutes left, NA had a three-on-one advantage but could not finish.  Ertzberger had a chance with 2:31 remaining but her shot was tipped wide.  The half ended with the Lady Tigers holding a 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, NA controlled play for most of the period.  Junior Brooke Baxendell sent a shot wide left at the 7:51 mark.  Less than a minute later, Schenk found Antimarino in front of the net, and the NA senior scored to give the Lady Tigers a 2-0 lead.  North Allegheny continued to pressure the Norwin goal and had a 2-1 break at the 17:31mark, but again could not connect.  With 13:53 left, Schenk tipped in a shot by senior Mandy Clark as the lead went to 3-0.  Hoot was able to put her own rebound into the net with 10:14 remaining to put the game out of reach.  Baxendell had another chance with 5:22 left but Gigliotti made the save.   Late in the game with 2:24 left, Marcius broke free and beat NA sophomore goalie Steph Anderson for the only Knight goal of the game.   The Lady Tigers came away with an important 4-1 section victory.

The Lady Tigers played well at times, dominating the contest.  Defensively, NA was able to keep Norwin off the board until late in the game.  A lot of credit goes to senior defender Erin McGee who was named the Player of the Game by the North Allegheny Sports Network.

With the win, the Lady Tigers improved their section record to 3-0, the overall mark to 5-3-1.  On Thursday, NA will travel to Hempfield to meet the Spartans in another section contest.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.

ERTZBERGER'S FOUR GOALS LEAD LADY TIGERS OVER PENN-TRAFFORD, 8-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior link Steph Ertzberger scored four goals as the Lady Tigers dominated the Penn-Trafford Warriors in an 8-0 victory at Newman Stadium on Wednesday night.  Junior forwards Brooke Baxendell, Alex Schenk, and Meghan Hoot, along with senior Amy Antimarino, all scored for the winning Lady Tigers.

The Lady Tigers controlled play from the outset.  Only the good play of P-T goalie Tara Flannery kept the Warriors in the game early.  Ertzberger had the first chance just 1:40 into the game but her shot went wide.  A minute and a half later, Ertzberger set up junior forward Shannon Sullivan just to the right of Flannery, but she also shot wide.  NA kept the ball in Warrior territory for the next several minutes and had three shots stopped in succession by Flannery.  Ertzberger had another shot go wide at the 15:07 mark before finally beating the P-T goalie from the right side to give NA a 1-0 lead with 13:11 remaining.  The goal opened the door for the Lady Tigers who scored four more times in the first half.  Baxendell, who assisted on Ertzberger's goal, scored after a scramble in front on the goal to make it 2-0 with 8:38 left in the half.  Senior midfielder Strealy Clark set up Schenk two minutes later to make it a 3-0 game.  Ertzberger broke free down the right side to score again at the 1:36 mark to extend the margin to 4-0.  It was Ertzberger again in the last minute with her third goal to give NA a 5-0 advantage at the intermission.

The second half was more of the same.  Coach Sue Phillips used her entire bench during the half, and they continued to control play.  At the 17:36 mark, Ertzberger set up Hoot for the sixth NA goal.  Hoot had another opportunity with 17:36 left but shot wide.  Sullivan had a good chance at the 14:21 mark but just missed the net.  Antimarino poked in a rebound with 9:04 remaining to increase the margin to 7-0.  Ertzberger scored her fourth and NA's final goal when her shot from outside the circle was partially blocked by P-T backup goalie Griffin White with the ball rolling into the open net.  Strealy Clark hit the side of the net in the final minute with a last chance.  The Lady Tigers finished the contest with an easy 8-0 win.

It was total domination by the Lady Tigers who did not allow a single Warrior shot.  NA had a total of 17 penalty corners to none for Penn-Trafford.  For her offensive efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Steph Ertzberger as the Player of the Game.
