TIGERS BREEZE PAST (9/9/11) With a balanced offensive attack and three rushing touchdowns by senior Vinnie Congedo, North Allegheny rolled over the Butler Golden Tornado for a 49-7 victory on Friday night. NA’s opening possession set the tone for the Tigers as they marched 68 yards on 10 plays for the first score of the evening. A third and fourth down conversions were key to the drive, with the first of those conversions coming on a 3rd and 12 from the Tigers 28. Junior quarterback Mack Leftwich hit James Kleinhampl for a 28-yard completion over the middle to keep the NA drive alive. Later on the possession on a 4th and 5 from the Butler 29-yard line, Leftwich found junior receiver Greg Garrity for a 20-yard gain to set the stage for the first score of the night. After a six-yard run by Nick Passodelis, Congedo accepted a hand off on 2nd and goal and charged into the end zone from three yards out to give North Allegheny a 7-0 lead. Coming off their first win in three years last Friday night against New Castle, the Butler offense appeared to be still riding that momentum on the ensuing possession. Butler quarterback Zach Rader tossed two perfect passes to Canan Roskovski to start the drive and move the Golden Tornado to the NA 45-yard line. However, those passes would be the only two Rader would complete for the remainder of the game as the Butler drive sputtered and ended when Rader fumbled the ball away at his own 46-yard line. The Tigers quickly converted the turnover into points, using just three plays to increase the lead to 14-0 on a six-yard touchdown run by Congedo with 4:45 left in the first quarter. After another Rader fumble that was forced and recovered by Zach Harvey at the Butler 31, the Tigers would strike again. On the first play of the second quarter, Leftwich lofted a pass to a wide open Isaiah Faulk for an eight-yard touchdown and to lift NA’s advantage to 21-0. The Tigers appeared poised to score again midway through the second quarter, but a tipped Leftwich pass fell into the arms of Butler’s Demetrius Lockley who raced up the sideline for a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown. The score trimmed the Tigers lead to 21-7, but it was the closest Butler would come. With 1:01 remaining in the first half, the NA offense answered the Butler defensive score on a 30-yard scamper by Leftwich to put the Tigers in command at 28-7. In the second half, the North Allegheny ground game cut through the fog that settled over Art Bernardi Stadium, and the Butler defense to put the game away. Congedo added his third rushing touchdown of the game with 6:34 to go in the third quarter to make it 35-7, Tigers. Congedo ended the night with 102 yards rushing and was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game by the North Allegheny Sports Network. Before it was all said and done, Faulk scored a rushing touchdown from one-yard out and Isaac Weaver netted a touchdown on an exceptional 13-yard run in the fourth quarter to bring the final score to 49-7. North Allegheny heavily out-gained the Golden Tornado, 436-64, on the night with 316 of those yards coming via the running game. Along with Congedo’s 102 yards rushing, Alex DiCiantis carried the ball nine times for 49 yards and Passodelis rumbled for 34 yards. Through the air, Kleinhampl was the top receiver for the Tigers by catching three passes for 65 yards. The NA defense more than held their own by swallowing up the Butler offense as Nate Nachazel posted a sack and junior Zach Lyon notched a pair of sacks as well. With the win, the Tigers improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Northern Seven Conference. Butler falls to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. North Allegheny will be back at home next Friday night for an early season battle with second-ranked Upper St. Clair at Newman Stadium.
