BEST NAMED TO ALL-STATE TEAM

The accolades for North Allegheny senior volleyball player Katie Best continue to roll in.  Best was recently named to the PVCA All-State Team for her outstanding play during the 2011 season.  Always a team player, Best began the year at libero but when injuries beset the squad, the senior moved to outside hitter and hammered opponents with her big swings.  Best was a key component on a North Allegheny team that reached the WPIAL semifinals with a 13-6 record.

BRADSHAW SIGNS LETTER OF INTENT WITH LEHIGH UNIVERSITY

North Allegheny senior Claire Bradshaw recently signed to continue her volleyball career next fall at Lehigh University, a Patriot League member located in Bethlehem, PA.  While at North Allegheny, the versatile Bradshaw played at both outside hitter and setter, in helping the Lady Tigers reach the WPIAL semifinals in each of the past three seasons.  In addition to contributing to the Mountain Hawks volleyball squad, she plans on double majoring in Biomedical Engineering and Psychology.

THREE LADY TIGERS NAMED ALL-WPIAL

(11/23/11) Following a successful Girls Volleyball campaign in 2011, three Lady Tigers have been named to the All-WPIAL Team.   Senior outside-hitter Katie Best and junior setter Maura Nolan earned All-WPIAL First-Team laurels.  Best began the year at libero, but after a season ending knee injury to Ava Mosbacher, Best filled in admirably to lead the Lady Tigers to the WPIAL Semifinals.  In her first full season at setter, Nolan was another key component to North Allegheny’s success, allowing her teammates the opportunity to hammer opponents with their big swings.  The third Lady Tiger to be named All-WPIAL was middle-hitter Erin Swartz who was a Third-Team selection.  The sophomore had a big season with numerous kills and blocks, and will be rock in the middle for the Lady Tigers in the years to come.

NA TRIPPED UP BY RAMS
IN SEMIFINALS, 3-0

(11/3/1) North Allegheny came up just shy of the WPIAL title game as the reigning champion Pine-Richland Rams set up a road block, beating the Lady Tigers, 3-0, on Thursday night in the Class AAA semifinals.  Pine-Richland returned to the WPIAL championship with set wins of 25-17, 25-16, and 25-18.  Notre Dame recruit Hannah Muzzonigro rallied the PR offense, setting up teammates Caitlin Scoscia, Chloe DiPasquale and Abby Dix all night long.

To open the match, it was North Allegheny who stormed out of the gates on a kill by senior Katie Best as the Tigers were hoping to pull off the upset.  NA sophomore Danielle Wall was terrific for the Tigers with well placed kills throughout the evening.  Wall tallied an unofficial nine kills on the night and was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.  Despite Wall and the Tigers’ best efforts, the Rams settled into their game and outlasted the raw emotion from NA, earning a 25-17 victory in set one.

North Allegheny dropped the second set 25-16 but looked primed to rebound in set three with a strong start.  Sophomore Erin Swartz started the set with a kill, which was followed up on a kill by Best.  The Lady Tigers traded points with Pine-Richland but maintained a slim lead thanks to kills by Katie Humes and Claire Bradshaw, and a block by Sarah Swartz.  With North Allegheny leading 14-11, it appeared as if the Tigers might force a fourth set.  However, the Rams rolled off nine straight points to squash the NA momentum.  DiPasquale collected three kills to help sway the pendulum back to Pine-Richland.  Kills by Sarah Swartz, Bradshaw and Wall only delayed the inevitable as the Rams earned the set and match with a 25-18 win.

The Lady Tigers’ tremendous 2011 season ends with North Allegheny finishing 13-6 on the year.  First year head coach Heidi Miller led NA back to the semifinals, playing through a rugged schedule and the toughest section in the WPIAL, if not the state.  With players like Erin Swartz, Danielle Wall, Katie Humes, Ashley Leto, Jessica Samuels, Meg Morningstar, setter Maura Nolan, libero Kristen Mitchell, and a healthy Ava Mosbacher coming back next season, North Allegheny should be primed for another run at a WPIAL title.

2011 WPIAL GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL

The Lady Tigers will compete again in Class AAA of the WPIAL along with 32 other teams.  Three teams from each section will qualify for participation in WPIAL Championship play at the completion of the regular season.  All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best section won/loss record.  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and ALL of the tied teams will be declared section champions, will receive a section winner's plaque, and will be entered into the WPIAL tournament.  If three or more teams tie for first place, only those teams will qualify for the playoffs.

In the event of a multiple tie (tow or more teams) for a playoff position, head-to-head will be the first determinant.  If head-to-head does not break the tie, the following Tie-Breaking System will be used.  If three or more teams tie for second place and the Tie-Breaking System identifies one team as the second-place team, the remaining teams will be then tied for third place and the process begins all over with head-to-head competition being the first determinant for establishing the third place team.  If a tie cannot be broken, all tied teams will enter the playoffs.

TIE-BREAKING SYSTEM

1.  Section records of the tied teams will be compiled.
2.  The team(s) with the best numerical head-to-head section record among the tied teams will enter post-season play.
3.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter post-season play.

All matches will be played with a best of five game format.

Two WPIAL teams will qualify for the State Championships to be held at a date and time to be determined.
