TIGERS DEFENSE KO'S (10/28/11) Much has been talked about the North Allegheny offense this season and rightfully so, but on Friday night it was the Tigers defense that bared its fangs and walloped the North Hills Indians for a 17-0 victory at Newman Stadium. On a crisp night in late October, the NA defense pulverized the Indians with sledgehammer blows, holding the North Hills offense without a first down until 3:28 of the third quarter and just 35 yards of total offense. Leading the defensive charge was senior linebacker Jarred Lux who limited North Hills’ ball carriers with 10 tackles, three of which went for losses. Chas Smith, Zach Lyon, Kevin Clemons and the rest of the NA cavalry rendered the Indians offense useless. While it was certainly a team effort in collecting the shutout, Lux was selected by the North Allegheny Sports Network as the Wright Automotive Player of the Game. While North Allegheny held the North Hills offense in check, the Indians defense gave up yards grudgingly as well and slowed the Tigers high powered attack to their lowest scoring output all season. NA managed only one first down in the first quarter, but finally started to heat up early in the second quarter. Thanks to the defense, the Tigers were winning the field position battle and it finally paid off when NA took over at the North Hills 48-yard line with 11:50 to go in the first half. North Allegheny moved the ball 33-yards on five plays before the drive stalled and Jason Buchert kicked a 25-yard field goal. On the kick, holder James Kleinhample did a great job pulling down a high snap to allow Buchert’s line drive kick to narrowly sail above the cross bar to give NA a 3-0 lead. After one of many three-and-outs by the North Hills offense, the Tigers put the ball in the end zone during a seven play, 51-yard drive. North Allegheny quarterback Mack Leftwich hit Brendan Coniker in the right flat for a four-yard touchdown pass and the Tigers took a 10-0 lead into halftime. At that point in the game, the Indians had achieved a total of minus three-yards of offense. Following an uneventful third quarter, the Tigers put the game out of reach with a touchdown early in the fourth when Vinnie Congedo crossed the goal line with a six-yard touchdown run to increase NA’s advantage to 17-0. That would be the final score as the Tigers defense maintained their dominance through the remainder of the game. While their wasn’t a whole lot to boast about offensively for either team, the Tigers did get a solid receiving performance from James Kleinhample who caught three passes for 78 yards. On the ground, North Hills transfer Isaiah Faulk burned his former mates with 11 carries for 60 yards and proved to be the most effective runner on the field on this night. With the win, the Tigers conclude a perfect 9-0 regular season and 6-0 record in the North Seven Conference. North Hills falls to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play, marking the first time since 1998 that the Indians will miss the playoffs. North Allegheny will host a home playoff game next Friday night against a yet to be determined opponent. The WPIAL brackets will be announced on Monday night. GAME SUMMARY
