PIAA SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS UNDERWAY

Meet Results

The first day of action at the PIAA Class AAA Swimming & Diving Championships has the Lady Tigers in seventh place with a team score of 30 and the NA Boys' in sixth place with a team score of 68.  The bulk of the Lady Tigers' team score was claimed by North Allegheny in the Girls 200 Yard Medley Relay.  The combination of senior Corinne Talhouk, sophomore Gabriella Borza, junior Erin Bishop, and junior Allie Pennetti earned a sixth place finish with a time of 1:47.18.  In the diving competition, senior Kelly McClure finished 13th with a finals score of 390.35. 

The NA Boys' swimmers were led by Matthew and Zachary Buerger in the 200 Yard IM competition, finishing in third (1:50.25) and fourth place (1:51.42) respectively.  The duo also contributed in NA's third place finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay.  Along with junior Evan Staresinic and senior Kostya Borisov, the Tigers finished with a time of 1:34.00 in the Medley Relay.  In the Boys 50 Yard Freestyle, Borisov earned a time of 21.25 to finish in 12th.  The state swimming championships will continue Saturday at Bucknell University.

LADY TIGERS WIN WPIAL, NA BOYS 2nd

Meet Results

The Lady Tigers won the Class AAA WPIAL Swimming Championship on Friday afternoon with an impressive landslide victory over the competition.  North Allegheny posted a team score of 393, leaving second place Oakland Catholic in their wake with a score of 292.5.  Oakland Catholic helplessly watched on as the NA won their third consecutive Class AAA title. 

The North Allegheny Boys’ swimmers were narrowly edged out by Upper St. Clair for the WPIAL title.  The Tigers trailed the Panthers by a ½ point going into the final event, the 400 yard Freestyle Relay.  The Tigers and Panthers swimmers were within an arm’s length of each other throughout, but in the end, Upper St. Clair nipped North Allegheny by .12 seconds. 

The Lady Tigers performance in the 400 yard Freestyle netted them a new WPIAL record by posting a time of 3:29.60.  Katya Borisov, Allie Pennetti, Dana Scherer, and Kally Vanderbilt were all part of the North Allegheny relay team that bested all WPIAL times before them.  Individually, Pennetti and Borisov claimed gold and silver in the Girls 100 yard Freestyle respectively. 

Up next for North Allegheny are the PIAA championships at Bucknell University on Friday, March 18.  The top three finishers in each event at the WPIAL Championships qualify for the PIAA Championships.

GOOD FIRST DAY AT WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
FOR TIGERS

Meet Results

The Lady Tigers have a comfortable lead following day one of the WPIAL Class AAA Swimming Championships at Trees Pool.  The NA Girls, boasting a score of 200.5, have a 27 point lead over second place Franklin Regional (173.5).  Oakland Catholic sits in third place with a mark of 154.5.  Things can’t get any tighter atop the leader board for the NA Boys’ swimmers.  North Allegheny and Upper St. Clair are knotted up at 181 for first place.  Penn-Trafford is a distant third with a score of 134.  North Allegheny junior Matthew Buerger earned double gold by taking first place in the 200 Yard IM and was part of the 200 Medley Relay that claimed first.  Evan Staresinich, Zach Buerger and Kostya Borisov also comprised the group of Tigers that earned first in the Medley. 

The Lady Tigers finished second in the Medley Relay and the 200 Freestyle Relay. In the Girls 200 Freestyle, Kally Vanderbilt took third place and Katya Borisov earned fifth place in Girls 50 Freestyle.  Day two of the WPIAL Swimming Championships gets underway at 3:00 pm on Friday.

KUREMSKY WINS WPIAL DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP

North Allegheny senior Connor Kuremsky won his fourth straight WPIAL gold medal and broke his own WPIAL diving record in doing so.  Kuremsky, who is headed to Stanford next year, earned a score of 607.30 at the WPIAL Class AAA Diving Championships on Saturday.  Kuremsky had set the WPIAL record last year with 591.50 and bested that with his final dive.  He will represent North Allegheny at the PIAA Championships at Bucknell University and will try for his fourth state title.  Sophomore Christian Wrigley earned fifth place with a score of 392.20.  Freshman Danny Melcher finished in 20th with a score of 169.25. 

For the Lady Tigers, senior Kelly McClure notched fifth place by scoring 371.80 in her first WPIAL appearance.  McClure will be an alternate for the PIAA State Championships.  Sophomore Danielle Malter took eighth place with a score of 353.60.  Senior Anita Sewald finished in 16th place with a score of 307.85.  Overall, a total of 31 divers took part in the WPIAL Girls Diving competition.  The diving points scored this weekend will go towards the overall WPIAL Swimming Championships this Thursday and Friday at Pitt's Trees Pool.

TIGERS EASILY HANDLE SHALER

Meet Results

The North Allegheny Swimming/Diving Teams once again swept the competition on Thursday night.  This time it was section foe Shaler who was victimized by the outstanding NA swimmers with a score of 101-64 in Girls action and 95-62 in Boys action.

For the Lady Tigers, first place finishers included Kally Vanderbilt in the 200 Yard Freestyle (1:57.80), Corinne Talhouk in the 200 Yard IM (2:14.44), Allie Pennetti in the 50 Yard Freestyle (25.21), and Kelly McClure in the 1 mtr Diving (212.40).

The NA Boys were led with first places finishes by Matthew Buerger in the 200 Yard IM (2:00.40), Evan Staresinic in the 50 Yard Freestyle (23.08), Connor Kuremski in 1 mtr Diving (338.60), and Aaron Li in the 100 Yard Butterfly (57.77). Several other Tigers also finished first in an easy victory over Shaler.  Both NA teams earned first in the 200 Yard Medley Relay as well.

North Allegheny will be in action again on Thursday, February 17 at North Hills.  Everything gets started at 6:00 pm.

NA TAKES DOWN BUTLER

Meet Results

The North Allegheny Swimming and Diving Team continued their winning ways with victories over the Butler Golden Tornado on Monday night.  The NA Boys defeated Butler 94-73 and the NA Girls earned a 94-82 win.  Monday’s meet was a make up from an earlier date that was postponed due to weather.

The Tigers easily swam past Butler with  numerous first place finishes, including Matthew Buerger in the 200 Yard Freestyle, Evan Staresinic in the 200 Yard IM, and Jonny Songer in the 100 Yard Freestyle.  For the NA Girls, Marina Rozick took first in the 500 Yard Freestyle, Arielle Krigger earned first in the 100 Yard Fly, and Kally Vanderbilt claimed first in the 50 Yard Freestyle. 

Up next for North Allegheny is a home meet with Shaler on Thursday night.  All the action starts at 6:00 pm.

TIGERS DEFEAT FRANKLIN REGIONAL

Meet Results

After snow postponed a meet with Butler last week, the North Allegheny Tigers were back to their winning ways on Tuesday night against Franklin Regional.  The NA Boys team defeated the Panthers 99-87 and the NA Girls were also victorious, 119-67.

Helping lead the NA Girls to victory was sophomore Katya Borisov who posted a time of 54.23 in the 100 Yard Freestyle event.  Borisov’s first place time was the best for any female Tigers’ swimmer so far this year in that event.  Junior Allie Pennetti also posted a season best time in the 50 Yard Freestyle by taking second place with a time of 24.91. 

Among others earning first place for the night was junior Dana Scherer in the 200 Yard Freestyle, Corinne Talhouk in the 200 Yard IM, and Kelly McClure in the 1 mtr Diving competitions.  For the NA Boys, Johnny Songer claimed first place in the 200 Yard Freestyle, freshman Zachary Buerger finished first in the 200 Yard IM, and Christian Wrigley took first in the 1 mtr Diving event.

The Tigers look to continue gliding past the competition on Thursday, February 3 when NA visits Hampton.  The meet is slated for 6:00 pm.

NA GLIDES TO VICTORY AT ALL-AMERICAN MEET

The North Allegheny Tigers dominated the competition at the All-American Meet this weekend.  The Lady Tigers took first place with a team score of 731, nearly 375 points better than second place Radmor.  The Tigers Boys team also claimed first place with a team score of 528.

Individually, Matthew Buerger earned Swimmer of the Meet honors, as voted on by the coaches.  Buerger earned first place in the 100 yard backstroke (52.47), and helped the Tigers to first place in the boys 400 yard freestyle relay.  Jonny Songer, Daniel Becker and Zachary Buerger also contributed to taking first in the 400 yard freestyle relay.

For the Lady Tigers, Katya Borisov claimed first in the 100 yard freestyle competition (54.36).  Corinne Talhouk finished first in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.29.  The combination of Borisov, Allie Pennetti, Dana Scherer, and Kally Vanderbilt led the Lady Tigers to first place in the 400 yard freestyle relay.

The NA swim teams will be back in action on Thursday with a home meet against section foe Butler.  That meet will start at 6:00 pm.

TIGERS PICK UP FIRST SECTION WINS BY COASTING PAST SENECA VALLEY

The North Allegheny Swimming and Diving teams collected their first section wins of the season as the Girls defeated Seneca Valley 103-68 and the Boys downed the Raiders 98-68.  Both teams combined earned victories 18 of the 24 events to coast by Seneca Valley on Thursday.

Among the many first place finishers for NA, the Lady Tigers were paced by Katya Borisov in the 200 yard freestyle.  Senior Corinne Talhouk claimed first in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:14.28.  In 1 mtr diving, senior Kelly McClure took first in that event with a score of 239.90. 

For the NA Boys’ swimmers, senior Kostya Borisov notched first place points in the 200 yard freestyle.  Evan Staresinic, Jonny Songer, and Sam Rutan left Seneca Valley in their wake in the 200 yard IM as the trio finished first, second, and third respectively.  Christian Wrigley took first place in the 1 mtr diving event with a score of 217.25.

North Allegheny is now 1-0 in section action and will visit section foe Fox Chapel on Tuesday.  That meet is slated to begin at 6:00 pm.

NA SWIM TEAM OUTLASTS MT. LEBANON

In a home meet against Mt. Lebanon, the North Allegheny swimmers continued their impressive start to the winter sports season.  The NA Boys' out pointed the Blue Devils 105-71.  In similar fashion, the NA Girls' defeated Mt. Lebo 106-71.  The Tigers are off until the South Park Diving Invitational next Tuesday.

TIGERS DOMINATE FIELD AT IUP KICKOFF CLASSIC

Meet Results

Both Tiger teams stood tall among an eight team field at the IUP Kickoff Classic at Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Monday afternoon.  The boys scored 94 points to finish in second place behind Penn-Trafford's 100 points. The NA girls took first place with 107 points, finishing 17 points better than the second place team, Franklin Regional. The combined total of 237 gave NA the combined team championship as well. 

The Tiger teams will travel to Bethel Park next Tuesday in a non-section meet.  The starting time is set for 5:00 pm.
