LADY TIGERS WIN WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The North Allegheny Tigers brought home another WPIAL Championship title on Saturday night after dominating the 2011 WPIAL Finals held at Moon Middle School. This marks the fourth WPIAL team title in five years for the Tigers, and 19th overall since 1984, making North Allegheny the most decorated team in the conference. In addition to winning the team competition, the Tigers also set a new WPIAL record for the highest team score to date with a 150.175.

For the WPIAL individual competition, groups are broken out into three divisions based on skill level: Intermediate II, Intermediate I, and Advanced.

In the Intermediate II division, sophomore Brooke Mancuso represented for the Tigers, placing 2nd on bars with an 8.25, 3rd on floor with an 8.7, and 3rd all-around with a 33.675. Junior Abbie Porritt also placed for the Tigers, taking 3rd on beam with an 8.425 and 5th all-around with a 32.85.

In the Intermediate I division, Junior Brianna Gabriel dominated on bars, taking 1st place with an 8.825 and 11th place overall in the all-around with a 34.675.

North Allegheny made their strongest statement in the Advanced division of the competition. Junior Tori Bianco took 4th place on vault with a 9.475, 2nd on bars with a 9.625, 5th on beam with a 9.25, 4th on floor with a 9.6, and finishing with the 2nd highest all-around score of the entire competition with a 37.95.

Junior Tiara Chadran and freshman Taylor Smith also represented well for the Tigers. Chadran placed 6th on vault with a 9.425, 5th on bars with a 9.275, 3rd on floor with a 9.675, and 4th all-around with a 37.575. Smith captured a 2nd place finish on beam, and a 5th place finish in the all-around with a 37.25.

Since the PIAA does not sponsor a state championship competition for gymnastics, the Tigers finish their season as 2011 Sectional Champions, 2011 WPIAL Champions and undefeated with a 14-0 record.

B.  Dual meets with two competition events running simultaneously, block style competition will be used, with up to five exhibition routines per team per event being permitted.

C.  Tri meets will have two competition events running simultaneously, block style competition will be used, with up to two exhibition routines per team per event being permitted.
