TIGERS TOPPLE USC, 9-7

(5/7/12) In their final home game of the regular season, the North Allegheny Boys Lacrosse Team went toe-to-toe with Upper St. Clair on Monday night at Newman Stadium and came away with a hard fought 9-7 victory.  North Allegheny's leading scorer Joe Griffin notched a hat trick in the victory and helped the Tigers outlast the playoff bound Panthers.  With his three goal night, Griffin now has 21 markers on the season.

It was Griffin who set up the Tigers first goal of the night with a feed to Art Stypula who buried a shot past the USC goalkeeper to give North Allegheny a 1-0 lead at 5:42 of the first quarter.  A minute later, the Panther tied the score and the game was knotted at 1-1 heading into the second quarter.

Despite man up goal by the Panther just seven seconds into the second quarter, the Tigers rolled off three straight goals to take a 4-2 lead into halftime.  Griffin sandwiched a pair of goals around an Anthony Peluso tally for the NA scoring.  Griffin's second goal came with just three seconds remaining in the half.

The Panthers weren't fazed by the last second Griffin goal that ended the second quarter and opened the third with three straight goals to capture a 5-4 advantage. Undaunted, the Tigers replied with three straight goals of their own for a lead they would not relinquish again.  Robbie Greenler scored his first goal of the season on an assist from Nick Foglio to tie the game at 5-5.  Alec McGovern and Charlie Johnson followed with goals to make it 7-5, Tigers, with 2:12 to go in the third.  North Allegheny and Upper St. Clair traded a pair of goals each in the remaining minutes and the Tigers claimed an intense and hard hitting, 9-7 victory.  Griffin and Grant Page scored NA's final two goals.

Continuing an impressive season in the face off role, Anthony Peluso won 15 of 19 draws on the night while Cody Black collected six ground balls.  Defensively, Ricky Minsterman and Ben Connelly had six forced errors apiece.  In net, John Brandon and John Abbondanza split time and combined for nine saves.

North Allegheny improves to 10-6 overall the playoff bound Panthers fall to 11-5 on the season.  The Tigers will round out their season with a visit to Peters Township on Friday  night.

TIGERS BOUNCE BACK, BEAT BETHEL PARK 7-5

(5/4/12) Behind two Kyle Rullan goals and a solid night in net by goalie John Brandon, the North Allegheny Tigers beat the Bethel Park Black Hawks on Friday night, 7-5.  Brandon played the entire game in net and made 12 saves along the way.  Rullan's goals were his first two of the season, and the first of which helped spark a four goal second quarter that allowed the Tigers to grab control of the game.

Trailing 2-1 entering the second quarter, Joe Griffin scored the equalizer for the Tigers at 9:42 of the period.   Just 10 seconds later, Rullan scored his first goal of the night to give NA a 3-2 lead.  Tyler Ware and Stephen Kelleher added goals before the end of the quarter to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead at halftime.

Bethel Park tried their best to get back into the game in the second half but could not get past Brandon and the Tigers defense often enough to mount a comeback.  Coby Cunningham was strong once again defensively with six forced errors.  Griffin posted five forced errors and Ben Connelly contributed four forced errors.  Coming off a terrific effort on Tuesday night against Pine-Richland, face off man Anthony Peluso followed that up by winning 10 of 14 draws against Bethel Park. While the defense was grounding the Black Hawks, Grant Page and Rullan capped the Tigers scoring with second half goals to close out a 7-5 victory.

North Allegheny improves to 9-6 on the season with the non-section win and will host Upper St. Clair on Monday night at Newman Stadium.  Action gets underway at 7:30 pm.

TIGERS FALL TO PINE-RICHLAND, RAMS EARN PLAYOFF BERTH

(5/1/12) The Pine-Richland Rams locked up a playoff spot and dealt a major blow to the Tigers playoff hopes with a 12-4 win over North Allegheny on Tuesday night.  The Rams used an aggressive defense and four man-up goals to run away from the Tigers in the second half.  The win snapped a seven game losing streak for the Rams against North Allegheny.

In the first half, things looked promising for the Tigers as Joe Griffin scored just 31 seconds into the game to give NA a 1-0 lead.  As it turned out, it was North Allegheny's only lead of the contest.  The tide began to turn late in the first quarter when Scott Wilden intercepted a Tigers inbounds pass and converted the turnover into the game tying goal.  Moments later, Ian Irvin scored for the Rams to make it 2-1 with 1:55 to play in the first quarter.

Irvin opened the scoring in the second quarter to make it 3-1, Rams.  However, the Tigers answered back on a Scott Davis tally to trim the deficit to 3-2.  Michael Dugan and Jake Savitz posted two more goals for the Rams before halftime to swell the Pine-Richland lead to 5-2.

As they did in the first half, North Allegheny struck first in the second half on a goal by Davis to bring the score to 5-3, Pine-Richland.  The Rams would go on to score seven of the last eight goals of the game to lift PR to a 12-4 win.  Art Stypula scored the only goal for the Tigers in the fourth quarter.

While it wasn't North Allegheny's night, the Tigers did have some outstanding performances.  Goalie John Abbondanza played most of the game in net and made some top shelf saves along the way.  Abbondanza made 13 stops on the night and John Brandon helped out with two saves.  The most impressive showing though came from face off man Anthony Peluso.  The Tigers senior won 16 of 19 face offs and was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

The loss drops the Tigers record to 8-6 overall and 2-3 in Section 2, and puts NA's playoff hopes in dire straights.  North Allegheny needs a Fox Chapel upset of Shady Side Academy on Wednesday to finish in fourth place and make the playoffs.  Pine-Richland improves to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the section.  North Allegheny returns to action on Friday night with a visit to Bethel Park.

BIG FOURTH QUARTER LEADS NA TO 9-7 WIN OVER WILLIAMSVILLE EAST

(4/29/12) North Allegheny used four unanswered goals in the final quarter to shock Williamsville East, 9-7, on Saturday afternoon.  The fourth quarter outburst helped the Tigers overcome a two goal deficit and leave East Amherst, New York with a two goal victory.  North Allegheny received a pair of goals from Grady Wagner and Joe Griffin in the scoring flurry.  Griffin finished with a total of four goals on the day and leads NA with 16 goals for the season.

The Tigers used three straight goals by Griffin, Anthony Peluso, and Scott Davis to grab a 3-1 lead in the second quarter.  However, Williamsville East struck for six of the next eight goals for a 7-5 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.  That's when the Tigers took control with their four unanswered goals in the final period.

Also contributing in the victory was junior Coby Cunningham who led the Tigers with six forced errors and six ground balls.  Fellow junior Charlie Johnson followed closely behind with five ground balls.   Goalies John Abbondanza and John Brandon combined for nine saves in net.

The Tigers improve to 8-5 on the year with the non-section win.  North Allegheny returns to section play on Tuesday night with a visit to Pine-Richland in a game with major implications.  The contest will be broadcast live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

SENECA VALLEY OUTLASTS TIGERS, 4-3

(4/25/12) Seneca Valley broke a 3-3 tie late in the fourth quarter as the Raiders edged the scrappy North Allegheny Tigers, 4-3, on Wednesday night at Newman Stadium.  The loss snapped a four game winning streak for the Tigers.

North Allegheny struck first with a goal by Joe Griffin just two minutes into the contest.  Seneca Valley answered with two goals in the second quarter for a 2-1 halftime lead.  The Tigers tied the game with 5:38 to play in the third quarter on a goal by Art Stypula, his 13th of the season.  The Raiders regained the lead two minutes later on a man-up goal for a 3-2 advantage.  North Allegheny refused to step aside however and tied the score once more on Griffin's second goal of the night with 10:00 minutes to play.  However, Seneca Valley's tally with 4:45 remaining gave the Raiders the 4-3 victory.

The Tigers played tremendous team defense in holding the high-powered Raiders to just four goals.  Goalie John Abbondonza made 10 saves in net while senior Jacob Hubert led with four forced errors.  Grady Wagner, Joe Huber, Joe Griffin and Coby Cunnigham all posted three forced errors in helping limit the Seneca Valley offense.

The Tigers fall to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in section play.  Seneca Valley improves to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the section.   North Allegheny will visit Williamsville East on Saturday at noon.

TIGERS WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT, TOP CENTRAL CATHOLIC, 11-8

(4/23/12) Behind Nick Foglio's four goal night the North Allegheny Tigers toppled the Central Catholic Vikings on the road, 11-8, on Monday night.  The victory was NA's fourth in-a-row and vaults the Tigers to a 7-4 overall record.  Along with Foglio's big game, the Tigers were spurred on by junior Joe Griffin's hat trick.  Foglio, the team leader in goals, has tallied 14 on the year while Griffin has tickled the back of the opponent's net 10 times this season.

It was Griffin and Foglio who led the way in the first 24 minutes as the duo scored five of NA's six goals for a 6-5 halftime lead.  Central Catholic opened the second half with a pair of goals to take a 7-6 lead, but it was the first and last time the Vikings would own the advantage in the game.  A minute after the Vikings jumped ahead, the Tigers tied the score on Griffin's third goal of the night with 1:45 remaining in the third quarter.  Anthony Peluso tallied the next NA goal 36 seconds later to pull the Tigers back in front, 8-7.

In the fourth quarter, Central Catholic earned brief momentum by tying the score with 10:27 to play, but North Allegheny scored three unanswered goals to lay claim to an 11-8 victory.  Foglio, Scott Davis and Ryan Mauro scored the last three goals of the game to help lift NA to the win.

Starting in net on this night and earning the victory was John Brandon.  The junior goalie played the entire game and stopped six shots to earn the victory.  Defensively, Coby Cunningham and Elijah Kuska played well and notched six forced errors from the Vikings.   Junior Cody Black contributed with eight ground balls in the contest.

The Tigers will take their four game winning streak into their next contest Wednesday night against section foe Seneca Valley.  That game gets started at 7:30 pm from Newman Stadium.

NA HANDS SEWICKLEY ACADEMY FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON

(4/20/12) The North Allegheny Boys Lacrosse Team knocked Sewickley Academy from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 9-7 victory on Friday night.  The Panthers trotted into Newman Stadium with an unblemished record but left with their first loss of the season.  The Tigers trailed Sewickley Academy at halftime, 4-3, but North Allegheny outplayed and outscored the Panthers in the second half.

Art Stypula led the offensive attack for the Tigers with a hat trick, while Scott Davis and Anthony Peluso got into the act with a pair of goals apiece.  Peluso, the NA faceoff phenom, won 16 of 19 face-offs on the night, helping set the table for the Tigers attack.  The offense was bolstered by Nick Foglio who set up teammates with three assists, two of which came on man-up opportunities.

Leading 6-5 entering the fourth quarter, the Tigers took command of the game behind two markers by Stypula for an 8-5 lead with 7:40 to play.  Sewickley tallied a goal at 7:25 to cut the deficit to 8-6, but Davis’ second goal of the night put the Panthers away with 4:16 remaining.  Helping solidify the win, goalie John Abbondanza played the entire game and made 10 saves.

North Allegheny improves to 6-4 with the non-section win.  Sewickley Academy falls to 7-1 on the season.  The Tigers have won three in a row and will try to continue their streak with a visit to Central Catholic on Monday night.  Face-off is slated for 7:30 pm.

TIGERS DOMINATE FOX CHAPEL, 13-0

(4/18/12) The North Allegheny Boys Lacrosse Team earned a road section win on Wednesday night with a 13-0 blowout over the Fox Chapel Foxes.  The Tigers took a strangle hold of the game with an eight goal first period and coasted to the victory.  Senior Nick Foglio was the catalyst in the first period outburst, scoring the opening goal of the game and finishing with a hat trick on the night.  Chris Leasher, Art Stypula, Ryan Mauro, Alec McGovern and Grant Page all tallied goals to give NA an 8-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Stephen Kelleher, Nick Koebley and Grady Wagner added goals to increase the Tigers advantage to 11-0 by halftime.  Wagner and Sam Garr struck for goals in the second half to bring the final score to 13-0, Tigers.  Amongst the Tigers who found the back of the Fox Chapel net, Leasher, Mauro, McGovern, Kelleher, Koebley, and Garr all scored their first goals of the season.

In net, John Abbondanza and John Brandon split time.  Thanks to the outstanding effort by the NA defense, the duo needed to make only one save in the game which belonged to Brandon in the second half.  The shutout was the third for the Tigers on the season.

With the victory, North Alleheny improves 5-4 overall and 2-1 in section play.  Fox Chapel falls to 0-5-1 overall and 0-3 in the section.  The Tigers are back in action on Friday night with a home contest against Sewickley Academy.  Face off is slated for 7:00 pm.

However, the Talbots fought back quickly in the third quarter, to knot the contest at 2-2, but a goal by Briskey helped the Tigers retake the lead for good.  Fourth quarter goals by Scott Davis and Stypula added further insurance, evening the Tigers record at 4-4 on the season.

FRANKLIN REGIONAL EDGES TIGERS, 7-6,
IN OVERTIME

(4/11/12) Jake Zoller’s goal with 1:13 to play in overtime lifted the Franklin Regional Panthers over the North Allegheny Boys Lacrosse Team on Wednesday night, 7-6.  The game was hard fought by both teams with physical play, hard checks, tight defense and strong goaltending.  The momentum of the game swung frequently as the lead changed hands several times throughout the night.

Franklin Regional struck first in the contest on a goal by Nathan Kolic at 7:18 of the first period, but the lead was short lived as NA’s Grady Wagner scored less than 40 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1.  At 5:15 of the period, Chris Smallidge put the Panthers back in front with a goal, but once again the Tigers responded when Scott Davis knotted up the score at 2-2 with a marker with 2:58 remaining in the first period.

North Allegheny’s offense began to pick up steam in the second quarter as the Tigers scored three goals in the span of one minute.  At 8:30 of the quarter, Davis scored his second goal of the night to give North Allegheny the lead, 3-2.  Joe Griffin followed with two quick goals of his own to expand the NA advantage to 5-2 in a quarter that was dominated by the Tigers.  The key to NA’s flurry of goals in the period was the strong work off the draw by face off man Anthony Peluso.  The junior won 13 of 17 on draws for the night and was a big part of the Tigers offensive success.  For his efforts, Peluso was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

As much as North Allegheny dictated the play in the second quarter, the Panthers owned the action in the third.  A man-up goal by Gianpaul Tollari at 4:24 of the third quarter swung the pendulum in Franklin Regional’s favor.  Derek Schultz and Tanner Roberts scored the game’s next two goals to tie the score at 5-5, and the Panthers grabbed the lead with 8:02 to go in the fourth quarter on an Evan Corna goal.

While Franklin Regional maintained their offensive pressure, NA goalie John Abbondanza refused to allow the Panthers the game clinching goal, denying them several times with great saves over the game’s final five minutes.  That determined play by Abbondanza in net eventually sparked the Tigers toward the game tying goal.  With just 1:13 to play, senior Nick Foglio scored his seventh goal of the season on a great individual effort, battling his way from behind the net toward the crease and letting go of a diving  shot that found its way in the back of the net to tie the score at 6-6.  The Tigers nearly won the game in regulation, but a save by FR goalie Luke Zottola turned Ryan Mauro away and the game was headed to overtime.  That’s where Jake Zoller would end the game with a goal that lifted the Panthers to the victory and kept FR undefeated at 5-0 and 2-0 in section play.

North Allegheny falls to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the section.  The Tigers will look to bounce back on Friday night with a non-section game against Hampton.  Opening face-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm at Newman Stadium.

TIGERS WIN SECTION OPENER, 2-0,
OVER SHADY SIDE ACADEMY

(4/3/12) The North Allegheny Boys Lacrosse Team won their section opener and third straight game with a 2-0 victory over Shady Side Academy on Tuesday night.  Tigers’ goalkeeper John Abbondanza played all 48 minutes and made 18 saves for the shutout.  With Shady Side silenced, North Allegheny scored the first goal of the game when Anthony Peluso fed Dan Briskey for a tally at 1:05 of the first period to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.   Coming off a four goal performance against Butler last week, Briskey now has five goals on the season.

Peluso scored a goal of his own at the 7:20 mark of the second period to increase the NA lead to 2-0.  Peluso’s goal was unassisted and the final marker of the night as Shady Side was rendered scoreless by Brandon and the Tigers defense.

North Allegheny improves to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in Section 2 with the road victory.  Shady Side Academy falls to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in section play.  The Tigers will look to continue their winning ways with a visit to Hudson, Ohio on Saturday afternoon.

Tigers’ goalkeeper John Brandon played all 48 minutes and made 18 saves for the shutout.

TIGERS' PHYSICAL PLAY TOO MUCH FOR GOLDEN TORNADO

To listen to an archived broadcast of the game, click here!

(3/30/12) North Allegheny broke a tie game with two goals in the first 31 seconds of the second half and toppled the Butler Golden Tornado on Friday night, 9-5.  The opening goals of the half by senior Art Stypula and junior Dan Briskey jump started the Tigers as the duo combined for seven goals on the night.  All four of Briskey’s goals came in the second half to help the Tigers shed the pesky Golden Tornado.  For his efforts, Briskey was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

While it was Briskey who led the second half surge, the first half began with a goal by senior Nick Foglio just 28 seconds into the game to put the Tigers in front, 1-0.  At the 8:51 mark of the first quarter, Stypula scored his first goal of the night on a fine set-up from Alec McGovern and NA held a 2-0 lead.  Butler would battle back however as a J.T. Raab marker and two Cody Bachman goals pulled the Golden Tornado ahead, 3-2 with 5:04 to go in the second quarter.  Thanks to an immediate faceoff win by Anthony Peluso, one of many on the night, the Tigers quickly gained possession and tied the score on a tally by Grady Wagner to send the teams to halftime with a 3-3 score.

The Tigers wasted little time in the second half when Stypula scored 25 seconds into the third quarter, and was quickly followed six seconds later by Briskey’s first goal of the contest to give NA a 5-3 advantage.  Raab temporarily halted North Allegheny’s momentum with a goal at the 4:46 mark of the quarter, but the Tigers promptly responded when Briskey found the back of the Butler net to make the score 6-4, Tigers.

Early in the fourth quarter, Peluso made a spectacular play that set up Briskey’s third goal of the night.  Charging through the right side of the box, Peluso was tripped by a pair of Butler defenders.  Regaining his balance, all the while maintaining possession of the ball, Peluso fired a pass from the right side of the net to a wide open Briskey in front and the junior took care of the rest for the hat trick and a 7-4 Tigers lead.   Tanner Kotch scored for Butler at the 9:24 mark of the fourth to trim NA’s lead to 7-5, but the Peluso to Briskey connection struck again with 2:56 remaining.  On another tremendous individual effort, Peluso fought through Butler defenders from behind the net and again found Briskey open near the crease who slammed home the goal to bring the score to 8-5, Tigers.   With Kotch looking to give Butler something to build in the final minutes, Coby Cunningham freed the ball from Kotch with a strong, clean check near the Tigers goal.  Senior Jacob Hubert quickly scooped the ground ball, bounced off a check at midfield, raced into the box and passed to Stypula who capitalized and scored his third goal of the game.  Stypula’s marker finished off the Golden Tornado for a 9-5 Tigers victory.

The Tigers played a physical, fundamentally sound game that was backed up by the goalkeepers.  Splitting time as they normally do, goalies John Abbondanza and John Brandon made some spectacular saves to solidify the victory.  Fine defensive efforts by Joe Huber, Ben Connelly, and Nick Skundrich complimented the play in net.

North Allegheny evens their record to 2-2 on the season while Butler falls to 1-2 overall.  The Tigers play their first section game of the season on Monday night with a visit to Shadyside Academy.

BLUE DEVILS TOP TIGERS, 13-4

Despite going toe-to-toe with the defending WPIAL champions throughout the first 11 minutes of the game, North Allegheny could not keep pace with the high powered Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils as the Tigers fell, 13-4, on Monday night.  For most of the opening quarter, the difference in the game was just a man-up goal by Mt. Lebanon's Doran Graham to put the Blue Devils in front, 1-0.  The Tigers offense did well to control possession and keep Mt. Lebo away from the NA net.  That is, until the final minute of the opening quarter.  Pat Donnelly and Jameson Dowling scored within 25 seconds of each other to give the Blue Devils a 3-0 lead heading to the second quarter.

Mt. Lebanon quickly jumped on the Tigers for another goal to start the second period on a man-up goal by Louis Lucerne to make it 4-0, Blue Devils.  Graham and Lucerne scored again to balloon Mt. Lebanon's lead to 6-0 at the 6:01 mark of the quarter.  North Allegheny finally got on the board on a Grady Wagner goal to take advantage of a man-up opportunity.  The Tigers struck again minutes later when Charlie Johnson found Art Stypula open for a shot and goal with a man-advantage to cut the score to 6-2.  Mt. Lebanon received one more goal before the end of the half to hold a 7-2 advantage at intermission.

To open the third quarter, the Blue Devils continued to increase their lead behind goals by Jacob Sure and Pat Donnelly.  North Allegheny answered on Stypula's second goal of the night with 8:45 remaining in the third period to bring the score to 9-3, Blue Devils.  With two goals on the night, Stypula was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

Following Stypula's goal, Mt. Lebanon opened the flood gates, scoring the next four goals to put the game well out of reach.  While the Tigers fell behind big, NA never relented in their attack and effort.  Amongst the Tigers who performed well defensively, Nick Skundrich, Joe Huber, Jake Hubert, and Coby Cunningham did their best to keep Mt. Lebanon away the North Allegheny end.  The Tigers capped the scoring in the game when Grant Page scored with 10 seconds remaining to bring the final to 13-4, Mt. Lebanon.

North Allegheny falls to 0-2 on the season and will visit Norwin on Wednesday night.  Mt. Lebanon opens the year at 1-0 and will take on section foe Trinity on Wednesday.
