THREE LADY TIGERS NAMED (7/2/12) After another strong season on the diamond, North Allegheny softball players Jordan Macey, Christine Scherer, and Mary Funderlich were named to the All-Section Team. Offensively, Macey fit the leadoff role for the Lady Tigers, atop several categories, inculding hits, runs, and stolen bases. The Youngstown State recruit was also a force defensively, displaying fantastic range and a strong arm in center field. Scherer, a sophomore, led the team in RBI, while striking out just once all season. Defensively, she helped anchor the infield from her shortstop position, finishing best on the team in defensive assists. Funderlich was another heavy contributor to the softball team this year, hitting over .300. She smashed a pair of home runs, and trailed only Scherer in RBI. Both Scherer and Funderlich will return in 2013, looking to build on the Lady Tigers' WPIAL Quarterfinal appearance this past season. * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
SPARTANS END TIGERS' SEASON, 3-0,
WPIAL Class AAAA Softball Bracket
(5/17/12) The Hempfield Spartans, behind the solid pitching of Kari Null, defeated the North Allegheny Tigers at Woodland Hills on Thursday afternoon. Sophomore pitcher Sami Beining, in a courageous effort, virtually matched Null’s performance, but it was the bat of Hempfield senior catcher Alyssa Bates that was the difference for the Spartans. Bates drove in all three Hempfield runs, including a two-run third inning home run that was the big blow of the game. North Allegheny staged a strong rally in the top of the seventh by loading the bases, but Null was able to pitch out of the no-out jam by keeping the ball in the infield to thwart the Tigers. NA never let up throughout the competitive game, but just couldn’t get the big hit to register on the scoreboard. Senior second baseman Stephanie Hnat led the way for the Tigers offensively with a two-for-three performance. The loss ends the Tigers’ season at 14-7, including a 10-2 Section 3-AAAA mark. Congratulations to the team on an excellent season with many exciting moments along the way.

The top three teams in each section will enter the WPIAL Tournament. All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best section won/lost record. Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and ALL of the tied teams will be declared section champions, will receive a section winner's plaque, and will be entered into the WPIAL tournament. If three or more teams tie for first place, only those teams will qualify for the playoffs. In the event of a multiple tie (two or more teams) for a playoff position, head-to-head competition will be the first determinant. If head-to-head does not break the tie, the following tie-breaking system will be used. If three or more teams are tied for second place and the tie breaking system identifies one team as the second place team, the remaining teams will be then tied for third place and the process begins all over with head-to-head competition being the first determinant for establishing the third place team. If a tie cannot be broken all tied teams will enter the playoffs. TIE-BREAKING SYSTEM 1. Section won-lost record of
the tied teams will be compiled. All WPIAL games must be played according to the National Federation Rule Book. Be aware that beginning in the 2010-11 school year the pitching distance will move from 40 to 43 feet. This is a mandated rule change. The two WPIAL finalists in Quad A will represent the WPIAL in PIAA inter-district play. POSTPONED GAMES MUST BE PLAYED IN ORDER OF POSTPONEMENT AND SCHEDULED ON THE FIRST COMMON AVAILABLE DATE. MAKE UP WPIAL SECTION GAMES MUST HAVE PREFERENCE OVER EXHIBITION GAMES, JV AND JUNIOR HIGH GAMES.
