PALMERI NAMED ALL-AMERICAN

(6/5/12) North Allegheny’s Christine Palmeri has been named to the Girls’ Lacrosse All-America Team.  Palmeri recently wrapped up a fantastic junior season by scoring 62 goals and 20 assists.  Palmeri is an all-around talent who not only puts points on the scoreboard but hounds opponents with her defense as well, forcing 52 turnovers and also winning 46 draws.  “All-American is one of the highest honors you can earn as a high school lacrosse player and Christine Palmeri deserves it,” said North Allegheny head coach Shannon Hadaway.  “She is a catalyst in the midfield and has relentless hustle and heart.  I am excited to see what she will do next year.”  Palmeri helped lead North Allegheny to a post-season appearance this spring and will certainly be one of the team leaders in 2013.

LADY TIGERS BOUNCED BY SEWICKLEY ACADEMY, 18-9

by Kat Ghion

(5/15/12) North Allegheny had a familiar opponent in the Sewickley Academy Panthers in Tuesday afternoon’s WPIAL play-in game, but the Tiger’s couldn’t come away with the victory and suffered an 18-9 defeat. Sewickley opened up the scoring early in the game, but junior Christine Palmeri answered right back tying the score at 1-1 less than two minutes into play. Sophomore Rena Ferrara would give the Tigers the early advantage, 2-1, soon after. The Panthers would tie it again with another goal from senior Caroline Ross and then shortly after Palmeri would add her second goal making it 3-2, Tigers. From then on the Panthers carried the momentum in the first half by scoring six unanswered goals from Ross, Maria Frischling, and Alexis Bosilovic. Towards the end of the half the Tigers would regain some momentum with goals from Palmeri and freshman Isabella Cottone, but they still trailed 8-6 at the half.

The second half would be all Sewickley as they outscored the Tigers 10-3 eventually leading to the final score of 18-9.Goals for North Allegheny in the second half came from Palmeri, Ferrara, and Cottone. The Tigers defense had their hands full with Sewickly as Bosilovic tallied eight goals on the day and senior Caroline Ross added five. Top scorers for North Allegheny were Christine Palmeri with four and Isabella Cottone with two.  Palmeri was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

North Allegheny finishes the season with a 7-9 overall record while Sewickley advances to play Peters Township in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Division I playoffs.

WPIAL GIRLS' LACROSSE - 2012

The Lady Tigers will be playing again in the WPIAL along with 30 other teams.  A WPIAL section plaque will be awarded to each of the section winners.  Those winners will be the teams who have the best record against all schools in their section.  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and each will be declared co-champions and will receive a section winner's plaque.  All ties in section record will be broken by head-to-head competition.

The top four teams in each section will enter the WPIAL tournament.  Teams that qualify for the WPIAL tournament may not play games after May 15, 2012 but may scrimmage any team that has qualified for, and remains alive in the WPIAL Tournament.  All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best section won/lost record.  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and ALL of the tied teams will be declared section champions, will received section winner's plaques, and will be entered into the WPIAL Tournament.  The top two teams from each section will play at home in the first round of the playoffs.

In the event of a multiple team (two or more teams) tie for a playoff position head-to-head competition will be the first determinant.  If head-to-head does not break the tie, the following tie-breaking system will be used.  If three or more teams are tied for third place and the tie breaking system identifies one team as the third place team, the remaining teams will then be tied for fourth place and the process begins all over with head-to-head competition being the first determinant for establishing the fourth place team. If a tie cannot be broken all tied teams will enter the playoffs.

TIE-BREAKING SYSTEM

1.  Section records of the tied teams will be compiled.
2.  The team(s) with the best numerical head-to-head section record among the tied teams will be the qualifier.
3.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter post-season play.

Teams that qualify for the tournament should be aware that they may be placed in a preliminary round and may be assigned to play beginning on Wednesday, May 16, 2012.  Section winners and second place finishers will be awarded home games in the first round with the third and fourth place teams playing away.  In the event of a tie for first and or second place, the WPIAL will determine the home site assignment based on availability and suitability.

Teams should be aware that PIAA tournament entry is reserved for Division I Teams.  The WPIAL will however crown a Division I and Division II Champion.  The Division I WPIAL Champion and Runner Up will qualify for the 2011-12 PIAA Girls Lacrosse Championship.
